The effects of feeding pattern were studied during anaerobic digestion of cassava stillage. Continuous feeding and semi-continuous feeding, were adopted in two internal circulation (IC) reactors (A and B, respectively). The reactors showed different performance in the anaerobic digestion process. The maximum difference, was observed for the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) removal rate and the biogas production, which were 23.2% and 95.7 L/2 d higher in reactor B than reactor A, respectively. The overall VFAs level of reactor A was higher than that of reactor B. Microbial community analyses indicated that the abundances of dominant bacteria and methanogens became higher in the reactor B than in reactor A as the digestion process progressed. Hence, semi-continuous feeding showed superior performance than continuous feeding for SCOD removal rate, biogas production, and the relative abundances of methanogens in the case of high OLR.

A submerged forward osmotic membrane bioreactor (FOMBR) was used to reveal the removal and degradation mechanism of carbamazepine (CBZ) from wastewater. The results showed that the removal mechanism consisted of the rejection of the forward osmotic (FO) membrane and biodegradation of the activated sludge. The removal efficiencies of COD, NH4+-N, and CBZ by the FOMBR were approximately 94.77%–97.45%, 93.56%–99.28%, and 88.20%–94.45%, respectively. Moreover, the COD and NH4+-N removal efficiencies were positively correlated with the increased CBZ concentrations. The results of the soluble microbial products (SMP) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) tests illustrated that the membrane fouling potential of EPS may be higher than that of SMP. According to the identified 14 degradation products, oxidation, hydroxylation, and decarboxylation were defined as the primary CBZ degradation mechanism. In addition, the RNA results showed that Delftia could be the characteristic bacteria in the CBZ degradation process.

The combustion characteristics for three kinds of antibiotics residue (AR) materials were investigated by TG–FTIR and Py–GC/MS technique. The TG results indicated that AR combustion involved three stages, and correlation between the H/C atomic ratio of the raw materials and peak temperature of weight loss for the second stage was obtained. The FTIR spectra identified evolving gaseous products as CO2, CH4, HCNO, NH3, HCN, and NO. An AR material with a low H/C ratio promoted the formation of CO2 and HCN, but suppressed the yields of NH3 and CH4. The Py–GC/MS results suggested that abundant volatiles can be produced, including alkenes, benzene, phenols, furans, acid, and heterocyclic-N, nitrile-N and amine-N compounds, and confirmed the FTIR absorption characteristics in the low temperature range. A possible pathway for the AR combustion was also tentatively presented.

In the present work, a novel magnetic porous carbon (MPC) with maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) particles is facilely prepared from hydrochar (a solid residue of hydrothermal carbonization of biomass) in one step through simultaneous activation and magnetization. The resultant MPC is characterized and utilized as an adsorbent for tetracycline (TC) removal from aqueous solutions. The BET surface area and micropore volume of the MPC are found to be 349 m(2)g(-1) and 0.16 cm(3)g(-1), respectively. The adsorption kinetics data could be well described by the pseudo-second-order model, and the TC adsorption onto MPC is an endothermic and spontaneous process. The enhanced surface area of the MPC, as well as its graphite-like structure, may contribute to the adsorption capacity of TC. After adsorption, MPC could be effectively separated by applying a magnetic field.
