Xylanase-aided chlorine dioxide bleaching of bagasse pulp was investigated. The pulp was pretreated with xylanase and followed a chlorine dioxide bleaching stage. The ATR-FTIR and XPS were employed to determine the surface chemistry of the control pulp, xylanase treated and chlorine dioxide treated pulps. The hexenuronic acid (HexA) could obviously be reduced after xylanase pretreatment, and the adsorbable organic halides (AOX) were reduced after chlorine dioxide bleaching. Compared to the control pulp, AOX could be reduced by 21.4–26.6% with xylanase treatment. Chlorine dioxide demand could be reduced by 12.5–22% to achieve the same brightness. The ATR-FTIR and XPS results showed that lignin and hemicellulose (mainly HexA) were the main source for AOX formation. Xylanase pretreatment could remove HexA and expose more lignin, which decreased the chlorine dioxide demand and thus reduced formation of AOX. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To reduce the degradation of cellulose and obtain high molecular weight of hemicellulose from the extracts, pH pre-corrected hot water pretreatment was developed by employing sodium hydroxide (3.9 mol/L). The response surface model was established to optimize the extraction process. The species composition and purity of hemicellulose extract was analyzed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The obtained solid remainder was analyzed by FTIR and SEM. The results showed that the component of xylose in hemicellulose extract was similar with commercial xylan. FTIR and SEM were shown to be able to evaluate solid remainder composition and surface characterization of the bagasse. The biggest balance between solid remainder and dissolved solid was obtained. Not only the yield of dissolved solid was improved, but the structure of solid remainder was also proved, which was beneficial to pulping and papermaking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Processing lignin into super-hydrophilic graphite by room-temperature chemical carbonization. A cost-effective, and low-energy room-temperature cascade catalytic carbonization strategy is demonstrated for converting lignin into graphite with a high yield of 87 %, a high surface potential of −37 eV and super-hydrophilicity. This super-hydrophilic feature endows the lignin-derived graphite to be dispersed in a variety of polar solvents, which is important for its future applications. Encapsulating of liquid metals with the graphite for electrical circuit patterning on flexible substrates is also advocated. These written patterns show superb conductivity of 4.9 × 106 S/m, offering good performance stability and reliability while being repeatedly stretched, folded, twisted, and bent. [Display omitted] Lithium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Li) is a promising novel water-based binder for lithium-ion batteries. The direct synthesis of CMC-Li was innovatively developed using abundant wood dissolving pulp materials from hardwood (HW) and softwood (SW). The resulting CMC-Li-HW and CMC-Li-SW binders possessed a suitable degree of substitutions and excellent molecular weight distributions with an appropriate quantity of long- and short-chain celluloses, which facilitated the construction of a reinforced concrete-like bonding system. When used as cathode binders in LiFePO 4 batteries, they uniformly coated and dispersed the electrode materials, formed a compact and stable conductive network with high mechanical strength and showed sufficient lithium replenishment. The prepared LiFePO 4 batteries exhibited good mechanical stability, low charge transfer impedance, high initial discharge capacity (∼180 mAh/g), high initial Coulombic efficiency (99 %), excellent cycling performance (<3% loss over 200 cycles) and good rate capability, thereby outperforming CMC-Na and the widely used cathode binder polyvinylidene fluoride. The surface characterization and chemical analysis of bamboo substrates by alkali hydrogen peroxide pretreatment (AHPP) were investigated in this study. The results tended to manifest that AHPP prior to enzymatic and chemical treatment was potential for improving accessibility and reactivity of bamboo substrates. The inorganic components, organic solvent extractives and acid-soluble lignin were effectively removed by AHPP. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that the surface of bamboo chips had less lignin but more carbohydrate after pre-treatment. Fiber surfaces became etched and collapsed, and more pores and debris on the substrate surface were observed with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Brenauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) results showed that both of pore volume and surface area were increased after AHPP. Although XRD analysis showed that AHPP led to relatively higher crystallinity, pre-extraction could overall enhance the accessibility of enzymes and chemicals into the bamboo structure. Effective removal of alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEM) is of great significance for promoting biomass pyrolysis. In this study, demineralization via hydrothermal pretreatment was performed, and the effect on the pyrolysis behavior was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and thermal pyrolysis–gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py–GC/MS). The effects of reaction temperature, time, and pH on the dissolution rate of K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ were investigated. The optimal total dissolution rate of the metal elements was 42.10%. Compared with acid leaching, hydrothermal pretreatment allowed a higher crystallinity index. It significantly changed the pyrolysis behavior. The relative content of sugar in pyrolysis products was as high as 58%. The chemical compound distribution was concentrated in the range between C6 and C9, which was conducive for the refinement of gasoline by upgrading.
