Abstract

The article presents a study which is aimed at demonstrating that keratinolytic alkaline protease (NAPase) can efficiently degrade prion protein, as does E77, an alkaline protease. NAPase from Nocardiopsis species degraded a scrapie prion without any chemical or physical treatment. The protein content was determined by the Lowry method using bovine serum albumin as a standard. The mechanism of keratin degradation by NAPase at the molecular level was investigated.
