The European standard test EN 113 for fungal degradation of solid wood has been adapted for degradation of paper by white rot fungus ( Trametes versicolor). Fungal degradation of paper sheets may potentially be used for screening different wood preservatives on paper instead of solid wood. The paper samples showed higher relative mass losses compared to wood, and samples pretreated with boric acid, copper sulfate and polymerized linseed oil were successfully tested for biodegradation using the paper sheet method. The results on paper degradation were compared with wood, both as wood blocks (according to standard test) and wood cut in sections forming layered structures mimicking paper layers. Various used paper materials have been exposed to the action of cellulases from Penicillium funiculosum, Trichoderma reesei, Trichoderma viride and Aspergillus niger. A 2 h incubation period showed cellulase from T. viride the most active except for office paper that was maximally degraded by A. niger cellulase. Cellulase mixtures increased saccharification while sequential treatment with cellulases from T. reesei and P. funiculosum increased biodegradation at values between 15% and 190%. The maximum increase of saccharification (190%) was obtained when T. reesei cellulase initiated the sequential treatment of newspaper relative to the sole action of P. funiculosum cellulase on this non-pretreated and pretreated material. Objective: The main objective of this study is the evaluation of RPPW anaerobic digestion feasibility at laboratory scale under Mesophilic condition. The experiment is conducted using a two-stage biofilm digester of 5 L capacity with mobile support material., Results: Anaerobic treatment of wastewater from recycled pulp and paper industry in Morocco was tested using a laboratory-scale anaerobic biofilm digester that operated under mesophilic conditions over a 70-day. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) efficiency, volatile and total solid (VS, TS) elimination of the substrate during the process were: 78%, 52% and 48% respectively. The system was stable throughout its operating cycle with an optimum pH (7.24), alkalinity (1750 mg CaCO 3 /L) and a volatile fatty acid value (760 mg/L). The experimental daily biogas production measured reaches a value of 5 L/day with a composition of 71% methane, 27.6% carbon dioxide, 0.2 oxygen and 7713 ppm of the H 2 S. The study results show that the anaerobic biofilm reactor is a suitable technique for recycled pulp and paper wastewater (RPPW) treatment. The reactor shows high performances in terms of process stability, removal efficiency (> 70%) and biogas production., Conclusion: Anaerobic digestion is an efficient waste treatment technology that uses natural anaerobic decomposition to reduce the volume of waste while producing biogas. However, research is needed to strengthen microbial metabolism, biochemistry and the functioning of the rector to improve biogas production. The RPPW AD experiment with biofilm digester technology was stable throughout the operation period. The digester knows an overloaded in the last phase of the experiment which leads to an inhibition of biogas production.

Objective: To investigate the cellulose modification process on kraft pulp during recycling by mono-endoglucanase., Results: Pichia pastoris expressing endoglucanase, EG1, was grown in a 10 l fermenter yielding a high carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase) activity of 340 U mg(-1). EG1-mediated modification of kraft pulp resulted in a paper sheet with the tensile index and burst index increased by 10 and 6.5 %, respectively. The kink index (indicating abrupt bends in fibres) of the enzyme-treated group decreased sharply by 45 % after the first recycling, compared with a reduction of only 1 % in the control group. Furthermore, EG1 treatment decreased the growth of crystallinity from 73.5 to 73.2 % and crystal size from 7.45 to 7.21 nm, which alleviated paper aging., Conclusion: Endoglucanase EG1 modifies the interfacial properties of fibers, which affects fibre morphology during the recycling process and improves the technical properties of the resulting pulp and paper.

Objectives: We investigated the applicability of single layer paper-based scaffolds for the three-dimensional (3D) growth and osteogenic differentiation of equine adipose-derived stem cells (EADSC), with comparison against conventional two-dimensional (2D) culture on polystyrene tissue culture vessels., Results: Viable culture of EADSC was achieved using paper-based scaffolds, with EADSC grown and differentiated in 3D culture retaining high cell viability (>94 %), similarly to EADSC in 2D culture. Osteogenic differentiation of EADSC was significantly enhanced in 3D culture, with Alizarin Red S staining and quantification demonstrating increased mineralisation (p < 0.0001), and an associated increase in expression of the osteogenic-specific markers alkaline phosphatase (p < 0.0001), osteopontin (p < 0.0001), and runx2 (p < 0.01). Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy revealed a spherical morphology of EADSC in 3D culture, compared to a flat morphology of EADSC in 2D culture., Conclusions: Single layer paper-based scaffolds provide an enhanced environment for the in vitro 3D growth and osteogenic differentiation of EADSC, with high cell viability, and a spherical morphology.

This article focuses on the merger of "Biotechnology Letters," with its companion journal "Biotechnology Techniques." The aim of this merger is to offer biotechnologists an even more rapid service than before. Papers will be handled with our usual alacrity (approximately 95% of papers published during 1999 were reviewed and authors notified of the decision within one calendar month of their receipt) but can now be published with the minimum delay after acceptance. Papers on current techniques and procedures in all aspects of biotechnology will therefore be equally welcome to the new Journal.

A stilbene dye (Direct Yellow 11) and a methine dye, Basazol 46L, recalcitrant to common chemical bleaches, were treated with horseradish and soybean peroxidases. Both enzymes were effective at chromophore removal. When compared to laccase in combination with a mediator (ABTS), soybean peroxidase was more effective at oxidative dye removal, especially for the methine dye.

We recently described a method for digitally labelling objects with DNA. Here we show that, using DNA methyltransferases to create polymorphic DNA templates, it is possible to significantly increase the number of labels that can be generated by this method. Nine double-stranded DNA templates of different length were methylated with either M.HaeIII or M.AluI methyltransferase, or both. Different mixtures of methylated and unmethylated versions of this template set were used to 'invisibly' label paper. The mixtures were eluted from the paper and the methylated status of the templates in each mixture successfully determined, and the labels read, by digestion with the complementary restriction endonuclease, followed by a polymerase chain reaction and agarose gel electrophoresis. One methylated DNA label was read after it had been left on paper for two months.
