The US has charged three Iranians for allegedly hacking Donald Trump's presidential campaign, revealing the increasingly advanced and aggressive tactics used by Iran in cyber warfare. The hackers, members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, engaged in a yearslong operation to compromise email accounts and gather sensitive data from US government officials. They often impersonated American government personnel in phishing emails to gain access to other accounts. The cyber activity originated from eight IP addresses in Tehran and targeted officials in the White House, Congress, intelligence agencies, and the media, among others. Iran's use of cyber tools as a geopolitical weapon has grown since the 2020 drone strike that killed Qassem Soleimani, and they have also targeted Israel in cyber attacks.
