Abstract Background Obesity is associated with the development of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a complex endocrine disorder. However, the correlation between body composition and PCOS in women has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to examine body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in women with and without PCOS in a population-based study within the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS). Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study among non-menopausal women aged 18–45 who underwent BIA in phase VII of the TLGS. A total of 150 participants with PCOS and 240 without PCOS were included based on the Rotterdam criteria. Baseline demographic, anthropometric, laboratory, and body composition parameters were compared between the two groups. Results The mean age was 33.7 ± 7.45 years in the PCOS group and 35.49 ± 7.05 years in the control group. The mean BMI was 27.0 ± 4.0 kg/m2 in the PCOS group and 27.1 ± 4.4 kg/m2 in the control group. No significant differences were found in body composition parameters between the two groups as assessed by BIA. Additionally, there were no correlations between body composition and hormone parameters in PCOS patients. Conclusion In this sample of non-referral patients with PCOS, the use of BIA did not provide added value beyond conventional anthropometric measures for assessing body composition. Further longitudinal research is needed to determine whether body composition analysis can enhance PCOS evaluation.

Abstract Background Limited studies have investigated the relationship between Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and metabolic syndrome (MetS), yielding inconclusive results. This study aimed to examine the relationship between AMH levels and MetS and its components in women from a general population. Methods This prospective study recruited 769 women. Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) models analyzed longitudinal trends of MetS components. Cox proportional hazard models evaluated effect of age-specific AMH tertiles on MetS occurrence, adjusting for confounders. Results The GEE analysis indicated that women in the third tertile exhibited higher mean FPG compared to those in the first tertile of age-specific AMH (3 mg/dL; 95% CI: 0.40, 5.60; P = 0.024); however, this association became non-significant after adjustment. Notably, the second tertile showed a significant decrease in FPG mean changes over time (-0.69 mg/dL; 95% CI: -1.31, -0.07; P Interaction = 0.030). Abstract Introduction Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a common chronic disease that significantly affects an individual’s overall health and well-being. The aim of this study is to investigate the factors that influence the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with T2D. Methods This study conducted using data from 6th phase (2015–2017) and 7th phase (2018–2022) of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS). Data were collected through a combination of interviews, physical examinations, and laboratory tests. Quality of life questionnaire (SF-12) that consists of 12 questions was used to assess physical and mental health functioning. The generalized estimating equation model was used to assess the association between socio-behavioral factors and changes in HRQoL. Results The study included 498 patients with T2D. The changes in HRQoL in patients with T2D followed a sex-specific pattern. Analysis of the physical component score (PCS) and the mental component score (MCS) showed a non-significant change in the total score during the three-year longitudinal study. However, the role physical (RP) of the PCS and the social functioning (SF) of the MCS showed a statistically significant change during this period. In addition, sex, body mass index (BMI), and having cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) showed a significant association with RP changes, and only job status showed a significant association with SF changes. Conclusions By recognizing the sex-specific patterns in HRQoL changes and understanding the multifaceted nature of factors such as BMI, CVD and CKD, healthcare professionals can develop targeted interventions that go beyond traditional diabetes management.

Abstract Background Genome-wide association studies in Western countries indicate a considerable impact of variations in vitamin D binding protein (GC) genes on serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). We aimed to investigate an association between rs2282679 polymorphism in GC and vitamin D deficiency. Methods A cross-sectional study conducted in the framework of the Tehran Cardio-Metabolic Genetic Study (TCGS) cohort. A total of 1568 participants aged > 18 years were randomly selected, and their 25(OH) D concentration was measured. Vitamin D deficiency was assessed concerning rs2282679 by descriptive and multivariate analysis, odds ratio (OR), and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) calculated. Since the interaction term between rs2282679 and recruitment season was significant, we performed regression analysis separately for individuals whose blood was taken in high sunny and those whose blood was drawn in the low sunny season. Results The rs2282679 polymorphism was in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P > 0.05) in the studied population. The serum concentration of 25(OH) D median was 15.0 ng/mL, and the prevalence of VDD was 27.8%. The presence of the G allele in rs2282679 increases the risk of VDD in additive (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.06–1.73) and dominant (OR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.06–1.68) genetic models. After separating participants based on the recruitment season, the unfavorable association was observed in the additive and dominant only in the low sunny season. Conclusion The finding of the current study indicates that the GC rs2282679 SNP is associated with vitamin D deficiency. It seems that the impact of risk allele increased in the low sunny season when UV exposure has been declined.

Abstract Background Understanding pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of the sustained-release liothyronine (SR-T3) is of paramount importance to design therapeutic regimens that are able to simulate normal thyroid hormone secretion while avoiding excursions in the T3 serum concentration. Here, we designed a parallel randomized clinical trial to characterize the PK and PD of the combined preparations of LT4 + SR-T3 in hypothyroid patients. Methods Radioiodine-treated hypothyroid patients over 20 years of age, who attained euthyroidism with LT4 monotherapy were recruited from the Endocrine Clinic in Tehran. The patients were allocated to two intervention groups of group A: 9 µg SR-T3 plus 68.5 μg LT4 (ratio 1:7.5) and group B: 12 µg SR-T3 plus 60 µg LT4 (ratio 1:5), and a control group with LT4 monotherapy. For PD study, thyroid hormone profile was evaluated at 8 and 12 weeks intervals after intervention. To assess PK properties of SR-T3, T3-Cmax, T3-Tmax and AUC0 − 24 were calculated at the last visit. Results Serum T4 and FT4 concentrations decreased in the intervention groups after 3 months. No significant difference was observed in serum T3 and FT3 concentrations before and after intervention. Serum T3/T4 ratio increased significantly in the intervention groups after intervention, with the highest increase in group B from 8.6 ± 2.03 at baseline to 12.2 ± 1.6. Comparison of trial groups at follow-up showed no differences in serum TSH, T4, T3 and T3/T4 concentrations among different groups. During 24 h, minimal variation in serum T3 concentration was observed in group B with mean ∆T3 of 15.4 ± 10.5 ng/dl. T3-Tmax, T3-Cmax and AUC0 − 24 in the combined sustained-release preparation were 4.38 ± 1.1 h., 101.0 ± 5.7 ng/dl and 2257 ± 110 ng.h/L, respectively which were significantly different from the control group. Conclusion Combined treatment with a single dose of SR-T3 plus LT4 is associated with increased serum T3/T4 ratio and minimal excursions in serum T3 concentration during 24 h; however, it was not significantly different from the control group. To incorporate sustained-release T3 in the management of hypothyroidism, a higher ratio of SR-T3 to LT4 than that of the previously recommended by the international organizations is suggested. Abstract Background To investigate the association between the Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) and Homeostasis Model Assessment of Beta-cell function (HOMA-B) with the incidence of diabetes and pre-diabetes subtypes. Methods A total of 3101 normoglycemic people aged 20–70 years were included in the 6-year follow-up study. Multinomial logistic regression was used to calculate the incidence possibility of isolated Impaired Fasting Glucose (iIFG), isolated Impaired Glucose Tolerance (iIGT), Combined impaired fasting glucose & impaired glucose tolerance (CGI), and Diabetes Mellitus (DM) per standard deviation (SD) increment in HOMA-IR and HOMA-B in the crude and multivariable model. Results In the multivariate model, an increase in one SD change in HOMA-IR was associated with a 43, 42, 75, and 92% increased risk of iIFG, iIGT, CGI, and DM, respectively. There was a positive correlation between the increase in HOMA-B and the incidence of iIGT; however, after adjusting the results for metabolic syndrome components, it was inversely correlated with the incidence of iIFG [Odds Ratio = 0.86(0.75–0.99)]. Conclusions HOMA-IR is positively correlated with diabetes and pre-diabetes subtypes’ incidence, and HOMA-B is inversely correlated with the incidence of iIFG but positively correlated with iIGT incidence. However, none of these alone is a good criterion for predicting diabetes and pre-diabetes.

Abstract Background We aimed to assess potential associations of habitual dietary pattern scores in relation to the risk of pre-diabetes (Pre-DM) progression to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) or the chance of returning to normal glycemia. Methods This cohort study included 334 Pre-DM individuals (mean age of 49.4 years, and 51.5% men) who participated in the third phase of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (2006–2008) and followed up for a median of 9 years. A validated food frequency questionnaire at baseline assessed usual intakes of the participants. Major dietary patterns were identified using principal component analysis. The DASH score and Mediterranean diet score (MDS) were also calculated. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals (CIs)) of developing T2DM and returning to normal glycemia in relation to dietary pattern scores. Results During the study follow-up, 39.8% progressed to T2DM, and 39.8% returned to normal glycemia. Three following major dietary patterns, including Western-style (with a higher load of red meats, hydrogenated fats, sodium, and total fat intakes), healthy pattern (with a higher load of whole grains, vegetables, and dairy products), and processed-foods pattern (with a higher load of processed-meats, fast-foods, salty snakes, and sweets and candies) were identified. The Western-style dietary pattern increased the risk of progressing to T2DM by 38% (OR = 1.38; 95% CI = 1.00 to 1.89, P = 0.050). Other dietary pattern scores were not related to regression or progression from Pre-DM. Conclusion The Western-style dietary pattern (characterized by higher load of red meats, hydrogenated fats, sodium intake, and high-GI foods) may accelerate the progression of Pre-DM to T2DM.

Abstract Background Data is inconsistent and, for the most part, not sufficient to demonstrate the association between serum Prolactin (PRL) concentration within the physiologic range and the incidence rate of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) among men. Moreover, since both PRL and type 2 DM are associated with reproductive hormones, investigating these hormones might improve our understanding of how PRL might impose its effect on the incidence rate of type 2 DM. Methods For the present study, 652 eligible men aged 29–70 with a normal baseline PRL concentration were selected from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS). Participants were sub-classified into three groups (tertiles) according to the serum concentration of PRL and were followed for 15.8 years. The incidence of type 2 DM and PRL, LH, FSH, testosterone, and AMH concentrations were measured. The effect of hormonal variables on the incidence of type 2 DM was estimated using the log-binomial model, adjusted for major confounding factors. The correlations between PRL and the indicators of glucose and lipid metabolism and other hormonal variables were also explored. Results In the unadjusted model, PRL was not significantly associated with the incidence rate of type 2 DM (RR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.94 − 1.03). After adjusting for potential confounders, the inverse effect of AMH on the incidence rate of type 2 DM was the only significant association. The analyses also indicated a significant positive association between PRL and LH/FSH ratio (r = 0.1, P = 0.01). Conclusion No significant association was found between serum PRL concentrations within the physiologic range and the incidence rate of type 2 diabetes mellitus among middle-aged men. Men with higher concentrations of PRL within the physiologic range tended to show higher levels of LH and LH/FSH. AMH was the only variable significantly linked to the incidence rate of type 2 DM in men.

Abstract Aim This study aimed to determine the association of urinary microalbumin concentrations with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), metabolic syndrome (MetS), and its phenotypes. The optimum cut-off values of urinary microalbumin and microalbumin-to-creatinine ratio (MCR) for predicting the chance of having T2DM and MetS were also defined. Methods Adult men and women (n = 1192) participated in the sixth phase (2014-2017) of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS), with completed data, were included in the analyses. Odds ratios (ORs) (and 95% confidence intervals (CIs)) of T2DM, MetS, and its components across tertile categories of urinary microalbumin concentrations were estimated using multivariable logistic regressions. The optimal cut-off points of urinary microalbumin and MCR were determined using the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results Participants’ mean (±SD) age was 44.9 (±14.0) years, and 44.6% of the participants were men. The prevalence of microalbuminuria was 14.4%. Chance of having T2DM was significantly higher in the highest tertile of urinary microalbumin concentration (OR = 2.29, 95% CI = 1.43-3.67) and MCR (OR = 1.82, 95% CI = 1.15-2.89). Subjects with the highest urinary microalbumin concentration were more likely to have MetS (OR = 1.66, 95% CI = 1.17-2.35), hypertension (OR = 1.63, 95% CI = 1.16-2.30) and hyperglycemia (OR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.24-2.56). No significant association was observed between urinary microalbumin concentrations and other components of MetS. The optimal cut-off points of urinary microalbumin for predicting the chance of having T2DM and MetS were 14.0 and 13.6 mg/L, respectively. Conclusions Elevated spot urinary microalbumin, below the values defined as microalbuminuria, was associated with the chance of having T2DM and MetS.

Abstract Background and aim Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a signaling gasotransmitter, is involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Here, we aimed to assess the potential association between serum H2S and dysglycemia in the framework of a population-based study. Methods Adults men and women with completed data (n = 798), who participated in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (2014–2017) were included in the study. Medians of fasting serum H2S concentration were compared across the glycemic status of the participants, defined as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), isolated impaired fasting glucose (IIFG), isolated impaired glucose tolerance (IIGT), combined IFG-IGT, and normal glycemia [i.e., those with both normal fasting glucose (NFG) and normal glucose tolerance (NGT)]. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess potential associations between serum H2S and the defined glycemic status. Results Mean age of the participants was 45.1 ± 14.0 y, and 48.1% were men. Prevalence of T2DM, IIFG, IIGT, and combined IFG-IGT was 13.9, 9.1, 8.1, and 4.8% respectively. Abstract Background The combined roles of lifestyle factors in the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) are not fully investigated. In the present study, we aimed to assess the relationship between a healthy lifestyle score (HLS) and the risk of T2D in Tehranian adults. Methods A total of 3859 individuals without T2D were recruited from participants of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (2009–2011) who were followed up for a mean period of 6 years. A food frequency questionnaire was used to collect individuals' dietary intakes at baseline. HLS scores was calculated based on three pre-defined methods with focusing on 4 lifestyle factors including, no current smoking, no obesity, high physical activity, and greater adherence to the healthy diet[determined using the alternate healthy eating index-2010(AHEI-2010), modified French Programme National Nutrition Santé-Guideline Score(mPNNS-GS), and healthy diet pattern score(HDP)]. Results Mean ± SD age of participants(44.4% men) was 41.1 ± 12.3 years. After 6-year follow-up of study, 295(7.6%) new cases of T2D were reported. Abstract Background Evidence of possible beneficial effects of dietary diabetes risk reduction score (DDRRS) on reducing the risk of various chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome (MetS) are limited. This is a prospective, population-based cohort study, which aimed to investigate the relationship of the DDRRS and its components with MetS incident in Iranian adults. Methods Individuals without MetS (n=3561) were recruited from participants of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (2009-2011) and followed for a mean of 6.01 years. A validated food frequency questionnaire was used to determine the DDRRS using based on eight components, including higher intakes of cereal fiber, nuts, coffee, and polyunsaturated: saturated fat ratio and lower intakes of red or processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, trans fatty acids, and low glycemic index. We used the multivariable logistic regression analysis to determine the odds ratio (ORs) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) of MetS across the tertiles of DDRRS. Results The mean (SD) age of individuals was 38.1(12.6) years at baseline. Median (25-75 interquartile range) DDRRS for all participants was 20(18-22). During the study follow-up, 682(19.1 %) new cases of MetS were reported. Based on the age and sex-adjusted model, participants in highest tertile of DDRRS had lower risk of MetS in compared with the lowest one (OR=0.64;95 %CI:0.52-0.79, P for trend=0.001). In the multivariable adjusted model, after adjustment for all possible confounding variables, the risk of MetS is decreased across tertiles of DDRRS (OR=0.60;95 %CI:0.48-0.75, P for trend=0.001). Also, higher scores of some DDRRS components including red and processed meat, sugar sweetened beverages, and coffee were related to decreased incidence of MetS. Conclusions The results of this study revealed that greater adherence to DDRRS can be associated with decreased risk of MetS in Iranian adult.

Abstract Background There are insufficient data in case of the potential association of habitual dietary L-arginine and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) incidence. Here we aimed to examine the potential effect of dietary L-arginine on the T2DM incidence. Methods For this cohort study, 2139 T2DM-free adults from the participations of Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS) were recruited. Follow up period was approximately 5.8 years. Daily intakes of protein and L-arginine were estimated using a validated food frequency questionnaire with 168 food item. Hazard Ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusted for sex, age, smoking, diabetes risk score, physical activity levels, and total energy intakes as well as carbohydrate, fiber, fats and lysine, were calculated for L-arginine as both absolute intake and its ratio from total protein. Results Mean (±SD) age of the participants was 38.9 (±12.6) years and 54.6% were women. Mean (±SD) intake of dietary protein and L-arginine was 77.2 (±22.4) and 4.05 (±1.50) g/d, respectively. An increased risk of T2DM (HR = 2.71, 95% CI = 1.20–6.09) was observed among participants with higher intakes of L-arginine (median intake of > 5.4 vs. 2.69 g/d). Total protein intake and the ratio of L-arginine to total protein intakes were not related to incidence of T2DM in both crude and adjusted models. Conclusion We found that higher dietary L-arginine levels may increase risk of T2DM and it may have an independent role in T2DM development.

Abstract Background Due to the increasing worldwide prevalence of obesity, it is essential to determine the prevalence of obesity-related thyroid dysfunctions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of thyroid dysfunctions, namely hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, and their association with BMI among adult Iranian overweight and obese individuals. Method This cross-sectional study was carried out within the framework of the Tehran Thyroid Study (TTS); 5353 participants (57.5% female) entered our study. Anthropometric measurements were performed. Serum levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) were assayed. We categorized individuals into 3 BMI groups (normal-weight, overweight and obese), then calculated prevalence rate, odds ratio (OR), and 95% confidence interval (CI) for outcomes in overweight and obese groups. Abstract Background Long-term antithyroid drug therapy has become one of the options for treatment of Graves’ hyperthyroidism. The aim of this study was to compare thyroid status in those who discontinued methimazole (MMI) treatment after 12.8 years with those who continued MMI as long as 24 years. Methods Fifty nine patients with Graves’ disease on long-term MMI for 14.2 ± 2.9 years were recruited; 32 patients (54%) decided to discontinue MMI and 27 (46%) preferred additional years of MMI treatment. All patients were followed for a mean of 6 additional years. Results Of 27 patients who continued MMI up to 24 years, suppressed serum thyrotropin (TSH) was not observed in any patient after the seventh year of treatment. Serum free thyroxine, triiodothyronine, TSH and TSH receptor antibody concentrations remained normal up to the length of the study. Mean daily dose of MMI to maintain TSH in the reference range decreased gradually and reached to 2.8 ± 1.7 mg by 24 years of MMI treatment. No adverse reaction related to MMI occured during additional years of therapy. In 32 patients who discontinued MMI, hyperthyroidism relapsed in 6 patients (19%), one left follow-up and 25 (78%) remained euthyroid during the study. Conclusions Long-term low dose MMI treatment may be a lifelong effective and safe therapeutic modality in patients with Graves’ hyperthyroidism for prevention of relapse, if studies from other centers confirm findings of this research. Abstract Introduction Despite the evidence available on the adverse impact of gestational diabetes (GDM) and thyroid disorders on developing type 2 diabetes (T2DM), the concurrent influence of these disorders on the incidence of T2DM has not been reported yet. Methods In this prospective study, 1894 non-diabetic women aged 20 to 60 years, with a history of at least one term delivery, without diagnosed hyperthyroidism were selected at the initiation of the Tehran Thyroid Study (TTS). Pooled logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the association of GDM, thyroid disorders i.e., hypothyroidism and/or thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) positivity and interaction between GDM and thyroid disorders with the risk of incident T2DM. Results Of the 1894 participants of the present study, 346 (18.3%) had a history of GDM, and 832 (43.9%) had thyroid disorders. The total cumulative incidence rate of T2DM at the median follow-up time of ~ 12 years was overall 12/1000 person-years (95% confidence interval (CI): 10/1000–13/1000), with an incidence rate of 16/1000 (95%CI: 13/1000–20/1000) in women with GDM; and 11/100,000 (95%CI: 9/100,000–12/1000) among those without GDM. After adjustment for age, the risk of incident T2DM increased among individuals with the previous GDM compared to women without a history of GDM (odds ratio (OR): 1.54, 95%CI: 1.06, 2.25). No significant associations were found between either thyroid disorders or the interaction between GDM and thyroid disorders with the development of T2DM; (OR: 1.14, 95%CI: 0.82, 1.58) and (OR: 1.27, 95%CI: 0.66, 2.43), respectively. Conclusion GDM and thyroid disorders have no concurrent impacts on the incidence of T2DM.

Abstract Background Abnormal levels of liver enzymes, particularly aminotransferases, are prognostic features of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Considering the important role of dietary intakes in development of NAFLD, we aimed to determine possible association of unhealthy foods (fast foods, soft drinks, sweet and salty snacks) consumption with elevated levels of aminotransferases. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted within the framework of sixth phase of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (2014–2017), on 187 adult men and 249 adult women (19–70 y). Usual intakes of unhealthy foods (kcal/week) were measured using a validated semi-quantitative 147-items food frequency questionnaire. Serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were measured. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds of elevated aminotransferases in each tertile of energy-dense unhealthy foods. Results Mean age of participants was 44.44 ± 15.09 years, 43% of participants were men. Higher consumption of fast foods (> 11.39% kcal/week) was associated with elevated ALT to AST ratio (OR: 3.27; 95% CI: 1.90–5.63) and elevated ALT (OR: 2.74; 95% CI: 1.57–4.76). There was no significant association between consumption of soft drinks, sweet or salty snacks and elevated aminotransferases. Conclusions Higher intakes of energy from fast foods seems to be associated with an elevated serum levels of ALT and ALT to AST ratio, as indicators of development of NAFLD.

Abstract Background Ovarian reserve, vital for reproductive function, can be adversely affected by thyroid diseases. Despite alternations of thyroid hormones with ageing, data on interactions between the overtime trend of thyroid functions and ovarian reserve status has rarely been reported. We aimed to examine the overtime trend of thyroid hormones, thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO Ab) and their associations with ovarian reserve status, identified by levels of age specific anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) in reproductive aged women, who participated in 12-year cohort of Tehran Thyroid Study (TTS). Methods Reproductive age women(n = 775) without any thyroid disease or ovarian dysfunction were selected from the Tehran Thyroid Study cohort. Participants were divided into four age specific AMH quartiles (Q1-Q4), Q1, the lowest and Q4, the highest. AMH was measured at the initiation of study and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free T4 (FT4), and TPO Ab were measured at baseline and at three follow up visits. Abstract Background Data of studies focusing on the trends of adiposity indices among women with prior gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), are limited and controversial. The aim of this study was to compare overtime trends of adiposity indices in women with and without history of GDM, using data of the long term longitudinal population-based Tehran-Lipid and Glucose-Study (TLGS). Methods A total of 3395 eligible women aged (20–50 years), including 801 women with prior history of GDM and 2594 non-GDM controls were recruited from among Tehran-Lipid and Glucose-Study participants. Generalized estimating equations were applied to assess the time trend of adiposity indices including obesity, central obesity, body mass index (BMI), lipid accumulation product index (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI) and a body shape index (ABSI) in women with prior GDM and the non-GDM groups after further adjustment for age and BMI. Results Median follow-up years for the GDM and non-GDM groups were 12.12 and 11.62 years, respectively. Women with GDM at initiation had worse adiposity indices than their healthy counterparts.
