Background: The triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, defined as Ln [fasting triglyceride (mg/dL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL)/2], provides insights into overall metabolic status. However, the association between the TyG index and gout has not been investigated. Therefore, this study explored the correlation between the TyG index and gout. Methods: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted from 2007 to 2018, this study investigated the relationship between the TyG index and gout. Demographic data and potential risk factors were analyzed and compared using t tests for continuous data and chi-square tests for categorical data. Logistic regression and subgroup analysis were performed to examine the association between the TyG index and gout. Results: A total of 14,924 participants were enrolled, among whom 726 (4.86%) were diagnosed with gout. Without controlling for any covariates, a significant positive correlation was observed between an elevated TyG index and increased risk of gout, with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.07 and a 95% confidence interval (CI) ranging from 1.76 to 2.43. After full adjustment, this association remained statistically significant, with an adjusted OR of 1.43 and a 95% CI from 1.14 to 1.80. Subgroup analyses revealed significant interactions, particularly for females (OR = 2.55; 95% CI: 2.00-3.26), individuals with no military service history (OR = 2.15; 95% CI: 1.66–2.43), and those without diabetes (OR = 2.00; 95% CI: 1.64–2.43). Conclusion: A positive correlation was observed between the TyG index and gout. Background: The presence of hypertension significantly increases the risk of diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes. Recently, Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI) has been introduced as a straightforward and robust alternative indicator for early detection of metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and T2DM. Visceral adiposity, more dangerous than subcutaneous fat, is associated with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. The VAI and Lipid Accumulation Product (LAP) are indices that quantify visceral fat and lipid overaccumulation, respectively. This study aims to explore the association between VAI, LAP, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in US adults with hypertension using NHANES data from 2005 to 2018. Methods: We analyzed data from 5,620 participants with hypertension in The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). VAI and LAP were calculated using established formulas. The VAI is calculated based on a combination of waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels. Logistic regression models were applied to evaluate the association between these indices and T2DM, adjusting for potential confounders. Subgroup analyses by age and gender were also conducted to assess variations in risk. Results: In all, 5,620 participants were enrolled in our analysis, with 2,754 (49%) being female, and a mean (standard deviation, SD) age of 57 (15) years. The mean (SD) cumulative average VAI and LAP among all participants was 241 (2.71) and 75 (67), respectively. Totally, higher VAI and LAP indices were significantly associated with an increased risk of T2DM in individuals with hypertension. For VAI, the odds ratios (OR) for T2DM were higher in older adults (≥ 60 years) [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.37, 1.22–1.53, per 1 SD increase] and females [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.39, 1.27–1.52, per 1 SD increase], indicating age and gender differences in risk. Non-linear relationships were observed, suggesting thresholds beyond which the risk of T2DM escalates dramatically. Conclusions: Both VAI and LAP are reliable markers for assessing T2DM risk in individuals with hypertension. Incorporating these indices into clinical practice could enhance the identification of high-risk individuals and facilitate early intervention strategies. Background: The cardiometabolic index (CMI) is a novel metric for assessing cardiometabolic health and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), yet its relationship with insulin resistance (IR) and prediabetes (preDM) is not well-studied. There is also a gap in understanding the nonlinear associations between CMI and these conditions. Our study aimed to elucidate these associations. Methods: We included 13,142 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2020. CMI was calculated by multiplying the triglyceride-to-high density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) by waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). Using weighted multivariable linear and logistic regression explored the relationships of CMI with glucose metabolism markers, IR, preDM, and DM. Nonlinear associations were assessed using generalized additive models (GAM), smooth curve fittings, and two-piecewise logistic regression. Results: Multivariate regression revealed positive correlations between CMI and glucose metabolic biomarkers, including FBG (β = 0.08, 95% CI: 0.06–0.10), HbA1c (β = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.22–0.31), FSI (β = 4.88, 95% CI: 4.23–5.54), and HOMA-IR (β = 1.85, 95% CI: 1.56–2.14). There were also significant correlations between CMI and increased risk of IR (OR = 3.51, 95% CI: 2.94–4.20), preDM (OR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.29–1.71), and DM (OR = 2.22, 95% CI: 2.00-2.47). Inverse nonlinear L-shaped associations were found between CMI and IR, preDM, and DM, with saturation inflection points at 1.1, 1.45, and 1.6, respectively. Below these thresholds, increments in CMI significantly correlated with heightened risks of IR, preDM, and DM. Conclusions: CMI exhibited inverse L-shaped nonlinear relationships with IR, preDM, and DM, suggesting that reducing CMI to a certain level might significantly prevent these conditions. Background: Serum lipids are highly heritable and play an important role in cardiovascular and metabolic health. However, the relationship between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels is unclear. This study aims to explore the association between serum 25(OH)D levels and HDL-C in adults aged 20–59. Methods: This cross-sectional study was based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between HDL-C and serum 25(OH)D, with further analysis using smooth spline fitting and generalized additive models. Results: A total of 28,084 adults were included in the study. After adjusting for multiple variables, we found a significant positive correlation between HDL-C and serum 25(OH)D levels (β = 8.3, 95% CI: 7.24–9.35, p < 0.001). Stratified subgroup analysis by gender showed that females consistently exhibited a positive correlation (β = 10.12, 95% CI: 9.07–11.18, p < 0.001), while males demonstrated an inverted U-shaped relationship between HDL-C and serum 25(OH)D. Conclusion: In the population aged 20–59, HDL-C levels are significantly associated with serum 25(OH)D levels. Clinically, simultaneous monitoring of HDL-C and vitamin D is recommended to better assess and manage cardiovascular health. Background: In recent times, a number of new indices for measuring visceral obesity have been developed. This research sought to investigate the relationship between four visceral obesity indices and prediabetes and diabetes. Methods: Conducted in 2011 as a cross-sectional analysis in Dalian, China, this study utilized logistic regression models to explore the relationships between four visceral obesity indices and prediabetes and diabetes. It also assessed the dose-response relationships using restricted cubic splines (RCS), performed subgroup analyses, and conducted interaction tests. The predictive values of four visceral obesity indices were evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: The study enrolled 10,090 participants, with prediabetes and diabetes prevalence at 80.53%. Multifactorial logistic regression revealed positive relationships between the four visceral obesity indices and prediabetes and diabetes. The results of the RCS analysis revealed a linear relationship between the body roundness index (BRI), cardiometabolic index (CMI) and prediabetes and diabetes. Conversely, a non-linear relationship was observed between Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP) and prediabetes and diabetes. Subgroup analyses demonstrated stronger relationships of CMI, CVAI, and LAP with prediabetes and diabetes among females. ROC curves suggested that LAP could be an effective predictor of these conditions. Conclusion: This research confirmed that four visceral obesity indices are linked with a higher risk of prediabetes and diabetes in middle-aged and elderly individuals in Dalian. Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects 6–12% of United States women of reproductive age. Because women with PCOS are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, clinical practice guidelines from a number of organizations (e.g. American Diabetes Association, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, US Preventive Services Task Force) recommend that individuals with PCOS are routinely screened for diabetes. Guidelines further indicate that an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) should be used for diabetes screening in women with PCOS as opposed to an A1C or fasting plasma glucose test. The purpose of this study is two-fold: 1) to estimate rates of diabetes screening among a nationwide sample of commercially insured women with PCOS and 2) to report the percentage of women screened using each test (OGTT, A1C, fasting plasma glucose) among those who were screened. Methods: We used the MarketScan Commercial Claims database (2011–2019) to identify a sample of women aged 18–64 years with PCOS who were free from diabetes at baseline and had ≥ 5 years of continuous enrollment in their insurance plan. PCOS was ascertained using International Classification of Disease diagnosis codes (ICD-9: 256.4; ICD-10: E28.2). Diabetes screening was ascertained using Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes (A1C: 8303683037; Fasting blood sugar: 82947; OGTT: 82950). Diabetes screening rates were calculated for the overall study sample as well as across subgroups defined by age, overweight/obesity, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and vascular disease. Results: In our sample of 191,110 commercially insured women with PCOS, 73.40% were screened at least once for diabetes during a five-year period. Among the women screened, 19.24% were screened using the Androgen Excess Society (AES)-recommended OGTT, 61.58% were screened using A1C, and 23.37% were screened using fasting blood sugar. Conclusions: In a sample of commercially insured individuals spanning the timeframe 2011–2019, nearly 75% of women with PCOS complied with the ACOG screening guidelines for diabetes. Backgroud: The relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) has been variably characterized in existing literature, with inconsistent results regarding its nature and implications in the Chinese population. This study aims to clarify this association, considering the potential impact of vitamin D levels on SUA. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 7,086 individuals from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, screened throughout 2020. We collected data on 25(OH)D, SUA, and other metabolic markers. Logistic regression models adjusted for confounding factors were utilized to analyze the relationships. Results: Our findings illustrate a statistically significant inverted U-shaped relationship between 25(OH)D and SUA. The identified threshold effect at 28.82 ng/ml is pivotal; with 25(OH)D levels below this point associated with an increased risk of hyperuricemia (odds ratio: 1.0146, p = 0.0148), and levels above it offering protective benefits (odds ratio: 0.9616, p = 0.0164). Conclusions: Our findings confirm a nonlinear, inverted U-shaped correlation between 25(OH)D and SUA, emphasizing the importance of maintaining vitamin D levels within a specific range to effectively manage hyperuricemia. These results support the implementation of personalized vitamin D supplementation strategies to optimize metabolic health outcomes, highlighting the complex interplay between vitamin D status and uric acid levels. Background: Accumulating evidence shows that free fatty acids (FFA) are associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, most of the studies focus on a few specific types of FFA, such as α-linolenic acid (C18:3n3) and Arachidonic acid (C20:4n6) or a total level of FFA. Objective: This study aimed to test the association between a variety of FFAs during the first trimester and the risk of GDM. Methods: The participants came from the Zhoushan Pregnant Women Cohort (ZWPC). A 1:2 nested case-control study was conducted: fifty mothers with GDM were matched with 100 mothers without GDM by age, pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), month of oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and parity. Thirty-seven FFAs (including 17 saturated fatty acids (SFA), 8 monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), 10 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and 2 trans fatty acids (TFA)) in maternal plasma during the first trimester were tested by Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Conditional logistic regression models were performed to assess the associations of FFA with the risk of GDM. Results: Nine FFAs were respectively associated with an increased risk of GDM (P < 0.05), and four FFAs were respectively associated with a decreased risk of GDM (P < 0.05). SFA risk score was associated with a greater risk of GDM (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.12–1.60), as well as UFA risk score (OR = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.11–1.44), MUFA risk score (OR = 1.70, 95%CI: 1.27–2.26), PUFA risk score (OR = 1.32, 95%CI: 1.09–1.59) and TFA risk score (OR = 2.51, 95%CI: 1.23–5.13). Moreover, joint effects between different types of FFA risk scores on GDM were detected. For instance, compared with those with low risk scores of SFA and UFA, women with high risk scores of SFA and UFA had the highest risk of GDM (OR = 8.53, 95%CI: 2.41–30.24), while the Odds ratio in those with a low risk score of SFA and high risk score of UFA and those with a high risk score of SFA and low risk score of UFA was 6.37 (95%CI:1.33– 30.53) and 4.25 (95%CI: 0.97–18.70), respectively. Conclusion: Maternal FFAs during the first trimester were positively associated with the risk of GDM. Additionally, there were joint effects between FFAs on GDM risk. Objective: The relationship between thyrotropin (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4) and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is still controversial, and this study analyzed the correlation between TSH, FT3, FT4 and DKD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: T2DM patients (1216) were divided into five groups based on serum TSH, FT3, and FT4 levels, differences in urinary albumin excretion rate (UACR), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were compared. Binary logistic regression verified independent correlations among TSH, FT3, FT4 and UACR, eGFR. TSH and FT3 predictive values for DKD were analyzed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: The prevalence of albuminuria with decreased eGFR was higher in T2DM patients with subclinical hypothyroidism and overt hypothyroidism than that in patients with normal thyroid function. TSH positively correlated with UACR (r = 0.133, p < 0.001) and positively correlated with eGFR (r = -0.218, p < 0.001), FT3 negatively correlated with UACR (r = -0.260, p < 0.001) and positively correlated with eGFR (r = 0.324, p < 0.001). With the change from the lower normal level to the increased level of TSH and the change from the higher normal level to the reduced level of FT3, the prevalence of albuminuria gradually increased, the prevalence of decreased eGFR gradually increased in TSH groups and FT3 groups. After adjusting for age, BMI, duration of diabetes, TPOAb, TGAb, smoking, drinking, hypertension, the use of anti-diabetic medications (metformin, sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors), HbA1c, CRP, TC, TG, LDL-C, and HDL-C, both TSH and FT3 correlated with increased UACR (TSH: OR 1.253, p = 0.001; FT3: OR 0.166, p < 0.001) and decreased eGFR (TSH: OR 1.245, p < 0.001, FT3: OR 0.579, p < 0.001), but this correlation of TSH with eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 was not found in male. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) for FT3 was greater than that for TSH (FT3: 0.64; TSH: 0.61). Background: Follistatin-like protein 1 (FSTL1) has been identified as a secreted glycoprotein that plays an important role in obesity. However, its role in children with metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has not been investigated. This study aimed at characterizing the relationship between serum FSTL1 concentration and MAFLD in children with obesity. Methods: A total of 121 subjects were recruited from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, including 45 obese children with MAFLD, 31 obese children without MAFLD, and 45 healthy controls. Anthropometric parameters, biochemical data were measured and circulating FSTL1 levels were detected by ELISA. Results: The levels of FSTL1 in obese children with MAFLD were higher than that in obese children without MAFLD: 1.31 (0.35–2.29) ng/mL vs. 0.55 (0.36–1.38) ng/mL. Correlation analysis illustrated that FSTL1 was associated with nonesterified free fatty acid and leptin (r = 0.278, P < 0.05 and r = 0.572, P < 0.05, respectively). Binary logistic regression suggested that increased FSTL1 was a risk factor for MAFLD in children (OR = 1.105, 95% CI: 1.066–1.269, P < 0.05). Background: Previous studies examined the association of Helicobacter pylori infection (H. pylori) with complications of diabetes, but the results have been inconsistent. The aim of this study of patients with type-2 diabetes (T2D) was to determine the association of H. pylori infection with the major complications of diabetes. Methods: This single-center retrospective study examined patients with T2D who received H. pylori testing between January 2016 and December 2021. Logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the association of H. pylori infection with four major complications of diabetes. Results: We examined 960 patients with T2D, and 481 of them (50.1%) were positive for H. pylori. H. pylori infection was significantly associated with diabetic nephropathy (odds ratio [OR] = 1.462; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.006,2.126; P = 0.046). In addition, the co-occurrence of H. pylori positivity with hypertension (OR = 4.451; 95% CI: 2.351,8.427; P < 0.001), with glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) of at least 8% (OR = 2.925; 95% CI: 1.544,5.541; P = 0.001), and with diabetes duration of at least 9 years (OR = 3.305; 95% CI:1.823,5.993; P < 0.001) further increased the risk of diabetic nephropathy. There was no evidence of an association of H. pylori infection with retinopathy, neuropathy, or peripheral vascular disease. Conclusions: Our study of T2D patients indicated that those with H. pylori infections had an increased risk of nephropathy, and this risk was greater in patients who also had hypertension, an HbA1c level of 8% or more, and diabetes duration of 9 years or more. Objective and background: The early detection of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) plays a crucial role in enhancing outcomes. We developed a nomogram prediction model for screening DKA in T2D patients. At the same time, the input variables were adjusted to reduce misdiagnosis. Methods: We obtained data on T2D patients from Mimic-IV V0.4 and Mimic-III V1.4 databases. A nomogram model was developed using the training data set, internally validated, subjected to sensitivity analysis, and further externally validated with data from T2D patients in Aviation General Hospital. Results: Based on the established model, we analyzed 1885 type 2 diabetes patients, among whom 614 with DKA. We further additionally identified risk factors for DKA based on literature reports and multivariate analysis. We identified age, glucose, chloride, calcium, and urea nitrogen as predictors in our model. The logistic regression model demonstrated an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.86 (95%CI: 0.85–0.90]. To validate the model, we collected data from 91 T2D patients, including 15 with DKA, at our hospital. The external validation of the model yielded an AUC of 0.68 (95%CI: 0.67–0.70). The calibration plot confirmed that our model was adequate for predicting patients with DKA. The decision-curve analysis revealed that our model offered net benefits for clinical use. Conclusions: Our model offers a convenient and accurate tool for predicting whether DKA is present. Background: Uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus (UT2DM) and its associated consequences nowadays have been a global health crisis, especially for adults. Iron has the property to oxidize and reduce reversibly, which is necessary for metabolic processes and excess accumulation of iron indicated by serum ferritin levels could have a significant impact on the pathophysiology of T2DM via generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, no conclusive evidence existed about the association of serum ferritin with the state of glycemic control status. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate serum ferritin levels and associated factors in uncontrolled T2DM patients and compare them with those of controlled T2DM and non-diabetic control groups. Methods: A hospital-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among conveniently selected 156 study participants, who were categorized into three equal groups of uncontrolled T2DM, controlled T2DM, and non-diabetic control groups from October 2 to December 29, 2023 at St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College. A pre-tested structured questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic and diabetes-related information. The laboratory tests were done using an automated chemistry analyzer and IBM-SPSS statistical software (version-27) was utilized for data entry and analysis with a significance level of p < 0.05. Result: The mean serum ferritin level was noticeably higher in uncontrolled T2DM patients as compared to controlled T2DM and control groups (p < 0.001). It was significantly correlated with HbA1c [r = 0.457, p < 0.001], fasting blood sugar (FBs) [r = 0.386, p < 0.001], serum iron [r = 0.430, p < 0.001], and systolic blood pressure (SBP) [r = 0.195, p = 0.047] in T2DM patients. A multivariate logistic regression model revealed that a rise in HbA1c (AOR = 3.67, 95% CI(1.50–8.98), serum iron (AOR = 1.02, 95% CI(1.01–1.04), male gender (AOR = 0.16, 95% CI(0.05–0.57) and being on oral hypoglycemic agent (OHA) monotherapy (AOR = 0.26, 95% CI(0.07–0.95) were key associated factors for the elevated serum ferritin among T2DM patients. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that T2DM patients had elevated serum ferritin levels which might be related to the existence of long-term hyperglycaemia and that serum ferritin had a significant positive association with HbA1c and FBs, implying that it could be used as an additional biomarker to predict uncontrolled T2DM patients. Background: Numerous studies have revealed the role of dietary fatty acids in human health. However, few studies have evaluated dietary fatty acid patterns and their association with metabolic parameters. The current study aimed to explore the association between dietary fatty acid patterns and risk factors for metabolic syndrome (MetS) among overweight and obese adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 340 participants who were overweight or obese. The study included assessments of body composition and anthropometric measurements. Dietary fatty acid consumption was evaluated using a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) containing 168 items. Additionally, biochemical parameters, including serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), fasting serum glucose (FSG), and insulin levels, were measured using enzymatic methods. Fatty acid patterns were determined by principal component analysis (PCA), and the association between these dietary FA patterns and risk factors related to MetS components was assessed using logistic regression. Results: Factor analysis conducted in this study explored three dietary fatty acid patterns: saturated fatty acids (SFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and long-chain combined fatty acids (LC-CFA). Those at the highest tertile of the SFA pattern had lower diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (P = 0.03). Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) was lower in the second and third tertiles (P ≤ 0.05). Also, higher fasting blood glucose (FBS) was observed in the second and third tertiles (P < 0.05), and the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was higher in the third tertile (P = 0.049). In the PUFA pattern, FBS was lower in the third tertile (P = 0.03). In the LC-CFA pattern, lower TC was achieved in higher tertiles (P = 0.04). Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that consuming high and moderate SFA patterns is associated with higher FBS and HOMA-IR. Also, increased consumption of SCFAs is related to lower DPB and LDL. Individuals who consumed more PUFA, especially linoleic acid, had lower FBS. These outcomes might be beneficial in managing MetS and leading to a new field of research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The white blood cell count to mean platelet volume ratio (WMR) is considered a promising inflammatory marker, and its recognition is increasing. Inflammation is closely related to metabolic diseases such as diabetes and its complications. However, there are currently no reports on the correlation between WMR and type 2 diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). This study aims to explore the correlation between WMR and DPN in type 2 diabetes patients. By understanding this association, we hope to provide a theoretical basis for preventing DPN through the improvement of inflammatory responses. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 2515 patients with T2DM. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the associations between WMR and DPN. Finally, the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve) was employed to evaluate the predictive efficacy of WMR for DPN. Results: Patients in higher WMR quartiles exhibited increased presence of DPN. Additionally, WMR remained significantly associated with a higher odds ratio (OR) of DPN (OR 4.777, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.296–17.610, P < 0.05) after multivariate adjustment. Moreover, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis indicated that the optimal cutoff value for WMR in predicting DPN presence was 0.5395 (sensitivity: 65.40%; specificity: 41.80%; and area under the curve [AUC]: 0.540). Conclusions: In patients with T2DM, WMR was significantly increased in DPN and independently associated with an increased risk of DPN presence in Chinese patients. This suggests that WMR may serve as a useful and reliable biomarker of DPN, highlighting the importance of paying more attention to T2DM patients with high WMR to further prevent and reduce the development of DPN and related unfavorable health outcomes. Background: Self-care practice is an integral and efficient part of comprehensive diabetes management, which could be influenced by various socio-demographic, clinical, and lifestyle factors. Objective: The study aimed to assess the level of diabetes self-care practice and its associated factors among patients with diabetes on follow-up at Yirgalem General Hospital, Yirgalem, Sidama, Ethiopia. Methodology: An Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from February 15 to May 10, 2022, involving 298 patients with diabetes on follow-up at Yirgalem General Hospital. A pre-tested interviewer-administered questionnaire was utilized to collect data from patients. A descriptive analysis was conducted to determine the level of good self-care practice. Bivariate and multivariable binary logistics regression were performed to determine factors associated with good diabetic self-care practice. Associations with a p-value < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Result: The overall good diabetic self-care practice among patients was 59.4%. Regarding the specific domains of care, 15 (5%) participants had good self-glucose monitoring care, 228 (76.5%) had good exercise self-care, 268 (89.9%) had good dietary self-care, 228 (76.5%) had good foot self-care, and 260 (87.2%) had good diabetic medication adherence. Single marital status (AOR = 5.7, 95% CI: (1.418, 22.915), urban residence (AOR = 2.992, 95% CI: (1.251, 7.153)), and having a glucometer (AOR = 2.273, 95% CI: (1.083, 4.772)) were factors that were significantly associated with good diabetic self-care practice. Conclusion: Good diabetic self-care practices among participants was low. Marital status, place of residence, and having a glucometer were statistically significant predictors of good diabetic self-care practices. Targeted intervention addressing those patients from rural areas to increase awareness and practice of self-care, as well as the promotion of having a glucometer at home for self-glucose monitoring is recommended. Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a prevalent chronic disease often accompanied by low-grade inflammation. Recently, the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has garnered researchers' interest as an emerging inflammation biomarker. This study aimed to comprehensively explore the relationship between NLR and T2DM using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. Method: We employed a cross-sectional study design to analyze data from five NHANES cycles from 2007 to 2016, excluding individuals with incomplete data. This study utilized a weighted logistic regression model, subgroup analyses, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis to assess the potential relationship between NLR and T2DM. Results: A total of 9903 participants were eligible for the analysis, of which 1280 were diagnosed with T2DM. The T2DM group exhibited significantly higher NLR levels than the non-T2DM group. After adjusting for potential confounders, elevated NLR levels were associated with an increased risk of developing T2DM, indicated by an odds ratio (OR) of 1.14, 95% CI: (1.05,1.24), P = 0.003. The results of the subgroup analyses revealed a significant interaction effect between NLR and T2DM concerning race and hypertension (P for interaction < 0.05). In contrast, no significant interactions were found for age, sex, education level, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, recreational activities, and alcohol drinker (P for interaction > 0.05). RCS analysis showed a significant non-linear relationship between NLR and T2DM, with an inflection point at 2.27 (all P for non-linearity < 0.05). Background: The aim of this study was to examine the association between different metabolic obesity phenotypes and the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Methods: This cross-sectional analysis utilized data from the baseline phase of the Ravansar non-communicable diseases (RaNCD) cohort study, which involved 8,360 adults. Participants with a Fatty Liver Index (FLI) score of ≥ 60 was classified as having NAFLD. The FLI score was calculated using liver non-invasive markers and anthropometric measurements. Participants were categorized into four phenotypes based on the presence or absence of metabolic syndrome and obesity. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association of NAFLD and obesity phenotypes. Results: According to the FLI index, the prevalence of NAFLD was 39.56%. Participants with FLI scores of ≥ 60 had higher energy intake compared to those in the FLI < 60 group (P = 0.033). In subjects with metabolically unhealthy phenotypes, the level of physical activity was lower compared to those with metabolically healthy phenotypes. The risk of NAFLD in males with the metabolically healthy-obese phenotype increased by 8.92 times (95% CI: 2.20, 15.30), those with the metabolically unhealthy-non-obese phenotype increased by 7.23 times (95% CI: 5.82, 8.99), and those with the metabolically unhealthy-obese phenotype increased by 32.97 times (95% CI: 15.70, 69.22) compared to the metabolically healthy-non-obese phenotype. Similarly, these results were observed in females. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the risk of NAFLD is higher in individuals with metabolically healthy/obese, metabolically unhealthy/non-obese, and metabolically unhealthy/obese phenotypes compared to those with non-obese/metabolically healthy phenotypes. Objective: There has been some confusion in earlier research on the connection between thyroid function and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This research is aimed to probe into the correlation between thyroid condition and the risk of PCOS from a new standpoint of thyroid hormone sensitivity. Methods: This research comprised 415 females with PCOS from Drum Tower Hospital Affiliated with the Medical School of Nanjing University, and 137 non-PCOS individuals were selected as the normal control. Based on free thyroxine (FT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), we calculated the thyroid hormone sensitivity indices, which consist of Thyroid Feedback Quantile-based Index (TFQI), Thyroid-stimulating Hormone Index (TSHI), Thyrotroph Thyroxine Resistance Index (TT4RI) and Free Triiodothyronine /Free thyroxine (FT3/FT4). The binary logistic regression model was adopted to investigate the correlation between thyroid hormone sensitivity indices with the risk of PCOS. Pearson or Spearman correlation analysis was employed to explore the association among thyroid-related measures with metabolic parameters in PCOS. Results: Results of this research showed that females with PCOS had rising TFQI, TSHI, TT4RI, and FT3/FT4 levels compared with the control group. After adjustment for the impact of various covariates, there was no significant correlation between FT3/FT4 and the risk of PCOS; However, the odds ratio of the third and fourth vs. the first quartile of TFQI were 3.57(95% confidence interval [CI]:1.08,11.87) and 4.90(95% CI:1.38,17.38) respectively; The odds ratio of the fourth vs. the first quartile of TSHI was 5.35(95% CI:1.48,19.37); The odds ratio of the second vs. the first quartile of TT4RI was 0.27(95%CI 0.09,0.82). In addition, no significant correlation was observed between thyroid-related measures and metabolic measures in females with PCOS. Conclusions: A reduction in the sensitivity of central thyroid hormone is closely correlated with a higher risk of PCOS. Objective: Diabetic patients are often comorbid with dyslipidemia, however, the relationship between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in the adult diabetic population remains to be fully elucidated.The aim of this study is to evaluate the associations between HDL-C and DR in the United States adults with diabetes. Methods: A total of 1708 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005–2008 were enrolled in the present study. Fundus images of all study subjects were captured and evaluated using a digital camera and an ophthalmic digital imaging system, and the diagnosis of DR was made by the severity scale of the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS).Roche Diagnostics were used to measure serum HDL-C concentration. The relationship of DR with HDL-C was investigated using multivariable logistic regression. The potential non-line correlation was explored with smooth curve fitting approach. Results: The fully-adjusted model showed that HDL-C positively correlated with DR(OR:1.69, 95%CI: 1.25–2.31).However, an inverted U-shaped association between them was observed by applying the smooth curve fitted method. The inflection point of HDL-C(1.99mmol/l) was calculated by utilizing the two-piecewise logistic regression model. In the subgroup analysis, the inverted U-shaped nonlinear correlation between HDL-C and DR was also found in female, Non-Hispanic White, and lower age groups. Conclusion: Our study revealed an inverted U-shaped positive relationship between HDL-C and DR.The findings may provide us with a more comprehensive understanding of the association between HDL-C and DR. Background: The proportion of heart failure patients with preserved ejection fraction has been rising over the past decades and has coincided with increases in the prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome. The relationship between these interconnected comorbidities and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is still poorly understood. This study characterized obesity and metabolic syndrome among real-world patients with HFpEF. Methods: We identified adults with heart failure in the Veradigm Cardiology Registry, previously the PINNACLE Registry, with a left ventricular ejection fraction measurement ≥ 50% between 01/01/2016 and 12/31/2019. Patients were stratified by obesity diagnosis and presence of metabolic syndrome (≥ 3 of the following: diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and obesity). We captured baseline demographic and clinical characteristics and used multivariable logistic regression to examine the odds of having cardiac (atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, coronary artery bypass surgery, myocardial infarction, and stroke/transient ischemic attack) and non-cardiac (chronic kidney disease, chronic liver disease, and peripheral artery disease) comorbidities of interest. The models adjusted for age and sex, and the main covariates of interest were obesity and metabolic burden score (0–3 based on the presence of diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia). The models were run with and without an obesity*metabolic burden score interaction term. Results: This study included 264,571 patients with HFpEF, of whom 55.7% had obesity, 52.5% had metabolic syndrome, 42.5% had both, and 34.3% had neither. After adjusting for age, sex, and burden of other metabolic syndrome-associated diagnoses, patients with HFpEF with obesity had lower odds of a diagnosis of other evaluated comorbidities relative to patients without obesity. The presence of metabolic syndrome in HFpEF appears to increase comorbidity burden as each additional metabolic syndrome-associated diagnosis was associated with higher odds of assessed comorbidities except atrial fibrillation. Conclusion: Obesity was common among patients with HFpEF and not always co-occurring with metabolic syndrome. Background: Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of metabolic disorders increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Dietary patterns are supposed to be important and controllable factors in developing metabolic syndrome. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of dietary patterns with metabolic syndrome and its components. Subjects/Methods: Cross-sectional data were extracted from the Bandare-Kong cohort study conducted on 4063 people aged 35 to 70. Dietary patterns were extracted using principal component analysis based on thirty-eight pre-defined food groups. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to investigate the association between metabolic syndrome and its components with quintiles of dietary patterns in crude and adjusted models. Results: Three major dietary patterns were identified (healthy, western, and traditional) in the final analysis of 2823 eligible individuals. After adjusting for covariates, the odds of metabolic syndrome were significantly decreased by 46% in subjects with the highest adherence to the healthy dietary pattern compared to those with the lowest adherence quintile. Results from fully adjusted models on individual metabolic syndrome components showed an inverse association between higher adherence to the healthy dietary pattern and the odds of increased blood glucose, high waist circumference, and elevated blood pressure. However, in fully adjusted models, no significant association was observed between the western and traditional dietary patterns with odds of metabolic syndrome and its components. Conclusions: Adherence to a healthy dietary pattern containing high amounts of fruits, vegetables, nuts, low-fat dairy products, and legumes, could be recommended to prevent and control metabolic syndrome. Objectives: To assess whether increasing radioactive iodine dose can increase treatment efficacy in Graves' disease. Methods: A prospective study was conducted, including 106 patients receiving 20 mCi (740 MBq) radioactive iodine (RAI), compared with a retrospective data, including 113 patients receiving 10–15 mCi (370–555 MBq) RAI. Remission and failure rates were evaluated at 6 months post-RAI. Statistical analysis was performed using logistic regression and Kaplan–Meier curves. Results: Patients receiving 20 mCi RAI demonstrated a significantly higher remission rate compared to the 10–15 mCi group (82.1% vs 66.4%, p = 0.009). Median time to remission was shorter in the 20 mCI group (3 vs 4 months, p = 0.002). Hypothyroidism at 6 months was more prevalent in the 20 mCi group (67% vs 53%, p = 0.03). Larger thyroid size (> 60 g) was associated with treatment failure (p = 0.02). Background: Hypothyroidism is a major manifestation of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD). We previously reported that a low selenium (Se) status was linked to an elevated prevalence of thyroid diseases. We hypothesized that Se status may also influence the restoration of thyroid function. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the recovery of thyroid function in patients with (sub-)clinical hypothyroidism, with a specific focus on Se status. Methods: We conducted a 6-year prospective cohort study comparing two counties with different Se concentrations. Demographic and disease data were collected from 1,190 individuals (549 Se-adequate and 641 Se-deficient) who completed a follow-up study in 2019. In addition, urinary iodine (I) levels, thyroid function, and serum and nail Se levels were measured. Logistic regression was used to investigate the relationship between Se deficiency and recovery of thyroid function. Results: Sex and smoking status was similar between the two counties studied. Thyroid function recovery rate was significantly higher in Se-deficient counties (46.0% vs. 30.6%, P = 0.008). In the multivariate analysis, our results show that female sex (odds ratio [OR] (95% confidence interval [CI]) = 1.875 (1.080–3.257), P = 0.026] and increasing age [OR (95%CI) = 1.028(1.007–1.049), P = 0.009] were associated with the recovery rate. Additionally, our study revealed that while Se status was significant in the univariate analysis, this association appeared to disappear in the multivariate analysis. Backgrounds: Although the significance of diet in preventing or managing diabetes complications is highlighted in current literature, there is insufficient evidence regarding the correlation between nutrient patterns and these complications. The objective of this case-control study is to investigate this relationship by analyzing the dietary intake of nutrients in participants with and without type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methods: A case-control study was conducted at the Tabriz Center of Metabolism and Endocrinology to investigate the relationship between nutrient patterns and type 2 diabetes (T2D). The study enrolled 225 newly diagnosed cases of T2D and 225 controls. The dietary intake of nutrients was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Principal component analysis using Varimax rotation was used to obtain nutrient patterns. Logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the risk of T2D. Results: The participants' mean (SD) age and BMI were 39.8 (8.8) years and 27.8 (3.6) kg/m2, respectively. The results identified three major nutrient patterns. The first nutrient pattern was characterized by high consumption of sucrose, animal protein, vitamin E, vitamin B1, vitamin B12, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, and potassium. The second nutrient pattern included fiber, plant protein, vitamin D, Riboflavin, Vitamin B5, copper, and Magnesium. The third nutrient pattern was characterized by fiber, plant protein, vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin C, calcium, and potassium. Individuals in the highest tertile of nutrient pattern 3 (NP3) had a lower risk of T2D compared to those in the lowest tertile after adjusting for confounders. The odds ratio was 0.52 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.30–0.89 and a P_trend of 0.039. Conclusion: This study found that conforming to a nutrient pattern consisting of plant protein, vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B2, potassium, and calcium is linked to a lower likelihood of developing T2D.The initial results suggest that following a nutrient pattern that includes these nutrients may reduce the risk of T2D. Background: Bariatric surgery leads to weight loss and to cardiometabolic risk improvement. Although prediabetes remission after bariatric surgery is biologically plausible, data on this topic is scarce. We aimed to assess prediabetes remission rate and clinical predictors of remission in a 4 year follow up period. Methods: Observational longitudinal study including patients with obesity and prediabetes who had undergone bariatric surgery in our centre. Prediabetes was defined as having a baseline glycated haemoglobin (A1c) between 5.7% and 6.4% and absence of anti-diabetic drug treatment. We used logistic regression models to evaluate the association between the predictors and prediabetes remission rate. Results: A total of 669 patients were included, 84% being female. The population had a mean age of 45.4 ± 10.1 years-old, body mass index of 43.8 ± 5.7 kg/m2, and median A1c of 5.9 [5.8, 6.1]%. After bariatric surgery, prediabetes remission rate was 82%, 73%, 66%, and 58%, respectively in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years of follow-up. Gastric sleeve (GS) surgery was associated with higher prediabetes remission rate than Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in the 3rd year of follow-up. Men had a higher remission rate than women, in the 1st and 3nd years of follow-up in the unadjusted analysis. Younger patients presented a higher remission rate comparing to older patients in the 3rd year of follow-up. Conclusion: We showed a high prediabetes remission rate after bariatric surgery. The remission rate decreases over the follow-up period, although most of the patients maintain the normoglycemia. Background: While dyslipidemia has been recognized as a potential risk factor for hyperuricemia, there is currently a dearth of large-scale data specifically focused on studying the relationship between these two conditions. To address this gap, the present study analyzed a dataset of 298,891 physical examination records to investigate in greater detail the clinical classification and compositional relationship between hyperuricemia and dyslipidemia. Methods: For this investigation, a cross-sectional research design was utilized to analyze physical examination data that was gathered from Yijishan Hospital in Wuhu, China between 2011 and 2016. Logistic regression was employed to examine the association between hyperuricemia and dyslipidemia. Furthermore, the association between hyperuricemia and dyslipidemia was evaluated based on the clinical classifications of dyslipidemia and its components. Results: A total of 298,891 participants from China (124,886 [41.8%] females) were included in the study, with an age range of 18 to 90 years (mean [SD]: 47.76 [13.54] years). In multivariate analysis, the odds of hyperuricemia was 1.878 times higher in patients with dyslipidemia compared to those without dyslipidemia (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.835–1.922). In the clinical classification of dyslipidemia, individuals with hypertriglyceridemia and mixed hyperlipidemia had 1.753 times (95% CI: 1.706–1.802) and 1.925 times (95% CI: 1.870–1.982) higher odds of hyperuricemia, respectively, compared to those without dyslipidemia. Among the components of dyslipidemia, the odds ratios for hyperuricemia in individuals in the fourth quartile compared to those in the first quartile were 3.744 (95% CI: 3.636–3.918) for triglycerides, 1.518 (95% CI: 1.471–1.565) for total cholesterol, and 1.775 (95% CI: 1.718 − 1.833) for non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Conclusions: Dyslipidemia has been independently linked with hyperuricemia. Moreover, the elevation of triglycerides or total cholesterol levels, including conditions such as hypertriglyceridemia and mixed hyperlipidemia, have been observed to have a positive association with the development of hyperuricemia. Background: Despite the growing prevalence of diabetes and its complications, there is a dearth of data regarding factors associated with glycemic control. Therefore, in this cross-sectional study, we aimed to identify factors influencing glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the Iranian population. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among the Azar cohort population and the glycemic control status of patients with T2DM was investigated. Possible risk factors including age, sex, marital status, educational level, smoking status, sleep duration, family history of diabetes and hypertension, socioeconomic status, physical activity level, and co-existence of other chronic diseases and their relationship with glycemic control status were also assessed. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify determinants of glycemic control. Results: Among 1,710 T2DM patients (60.2% female), the overall prevalence of poor glycemic control was 56.8%. In the unadjusted logistic regression analysis model, a low wealth score index significantly increased the risk of poor glycemic control (OR: 1.49;1.10–2.02). Variables significantly associated with poor glycemic control even after adjusting for confounding factors were first-degree family history of diabetes (OR: 1.34; 1.08–1.65), and sleep duration (OR: 1.29 ;1.02–1.62 for 6.6-8 h/d; OR:1.42;1.10–1.88 for > 8 h/d). Interestingly, we found that the co-existence of ≥ 3 chronic diseases with diabetes decreased the risk of poor glycemic control. Conclusions: In the current study, most of the patients with T2DM had uncontrolled glycemic control. Due to the individual and social costs of diabetes complications, it is necessary to suggest tailored and effective interventions for controlling blood glucose levels in people with diabetes. Objectives: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia and metabolic stress, involved in the stepwise development of cardiovascular complications. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a novel hepatokine involved in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism, and has been linked to the prediction, treatment, and improvement of prognosis in multiple cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between FGF21 levels and vascular diseases (VDs) including carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) and hypertension (HP) in patients with T2DM. Methods: Baseline serum FGF21 was determined in a cross-sectional study of 701 patients with T2DM and 258 healthy control. Results: The morbidity of CAS was increased in T2DM patients with HP as compared with those without (p < 0.001). The average serum FGF21 level of healthy was [123.9 (67.2-219.3)]. Baseline FGF21 was significantly higher in those who developed CAS or HP than in those who did not [305.9 (177.2-508.4) vs. 197.2 (129.7-308.3) pg/mL, p < 0.001]. In addition, an elevated serum FGF21 was observed in T2DM patients with HP and CAS than that of T2DM patients with CAS or HP [550.5 (312.6-711.3) vs. 305.9 pg/mL, p < 0.001]. Serum FGF21 levels were positively correlated with body mass index and carotid intima media thicknes (p < 0.05), the association remained significant after adjusting for age and T2DM duration. Furthermore, the multinomial logistic regression showed that serum FGF21 was independently associated with CAS and HP in patients with T2DM after adjustment for demographic and traditional VDs risk factors (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Baseline FGF21 is elevated in VDs during diabetes, changes of serum FGF21 levels were appropriately matched to metabolic stress. Introduction: Diabetes foot deformity is among the major causes of diabetic foot ulceration, resulting in lower limb amputation. However, the study on the distribution of foot deformity and its risk factor among diabetic patients in Ethiopia is limited. This study determined the overall prevalence and associated factors of foot deformity among adult diabetic patients on follow-up at Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods: Hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 392 diabetic patients using a systematic random sampling technique at Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. Data were collected by pre-tested, semi-structured questionnaires and diabetic foot assessment format. Multivariable binary logistic regression was used to determine the association between dependent and independent variables. Adjusted odds ratios (AOR) with their 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to determine the strength of the association, and a variable with a p-value < 0.05 was statistically significant factors of diabetes foot deformity. Result: The overall prevalence of foot deformity was 33.4% [95% CI: 28.9–38.3]. In the final logistic regression analysis, rural residency [AOR = 2.64, 95% CI: 1.31, 5.31], poor glycemic control [AOR = 2.41; 95% CI: 1.34, 4.33], diabetes duration ≥ 10 years [AOR = 2.74; 95% CI: 1.50, 5.02], inadequate footwear [AOR = 2.11; 95% CI: 1.17, 3.82] and presence of peripheral neuropathy [AOR = 8.21; 95% CI: 4.54, 14.84] were statistically significant associated factors with diabetes foot deformity. Conclusion: The prevalence of foot deformity among adult diabetic patients was high. It is recommended to incorporate foot deformity screening in routine diabetic patient follow-ups especially for those with poor glycaemic control, rural residency, long diabetes duration, inadequate footwear, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Background: The presence of high-volume lymph node metastasis (LNM) and extranodal extension (ENE) greatly increases the risk of recurrence in patients with low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). The goal of this research was to analyze the factors that contribute to high-risk lymph node metastasis in patients with low-risk PTMC. Methods: We analyzed the records of 7344 patients who were diagnosed with low-risk PTMC and treated at our center from January 2013 to June 2018.LNM with a high volume or ENE was classified as high-risk lymph node metastasis (hr-LNM). A logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the risk factors associated with hr-LNM. A nomogram was created and verified using risk factors obtained from LASSO regression analysis, to predict the likelihood of hr-LNM. Results: The rate of hr-LNM was 6.5%. LASSO regression revealed six variables that independently contribute to hr-LNM: sex, age, tumor size, tumor location, Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), and microscopic capsular invasion. A predictive nomogram was developed by integrating these risk factors, demonstrating its excellent performance. Upon analyzing the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for predicting hr-LNM, it was observed that the area under the curve (AUC) had a value of 0.745 and 0.730 in the training and testing groups showed strong agreement, affirming great reliability. Conclusion: Sex, age, tumor size, tumor location, HT, and microscopic capsular invasion were determined to be key factors associated with hr-LNM in low-risk PTMC. Objective: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the association between TNs and the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and the aggregate index of systemic inflammation (AISI) in patients with T2DM. Methods: A total of 370 T2DM patients, who were admitted to Dongzhimen Hospital between January 2020 and March 2023, were included in this retrospective study. Binary logistic regression models with multivariable adjustment were employed to assess the relationship between SII, AISI quartiles, and TNs. Furthermore, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of SII and AISI in identifying T2DM patients with TNs. Results: Age, diabetes duration, diabetic nephropathy (DN), SII, and AISI demonstrated significant positive associations with TNs. Compared to the first quartile of SII, the second, third, and fourth quartiles showed increased risks of TNs with hazard ratios (HRs) of 1.578 (0.883–2.820), 2.279 (1.257–4.131), and 3.626 (1.931–6.810), respectively (P < 0.001). Similar results were observed for AISI and TNs. ROC curve analysis revealed that SII and AISI exhibited a high discriminatory capability for identifying TNs in the overall and male participant group, whereas the significance among females was not discernible. Conclusions: This study provides evidence that SII and AISI are independent risk factors for TNs, suggesting that elevated SII and AISI levels may contribute to the development of TNs in patients with T2DM particularly among male individuals. Several studies have associated the presence of ADIPOQ gene polymorphisms with insulin resistance, adiponectin levels, and metabolic diseases such as diabetes, although with varying degrees of correlation depending on ethnicity. Here we aim to identify individual's susceptibility to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in the presence of T45G and G276T single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the ADIPOQ gene among Filipino pregnant women. A total of 285 pregnant women (95 GDM cases and 190 controls) were included in this study. Two ADIPOQ gene polymorphisms were genotyped using TaqMan assay. Results of SNP genotyping showed no significant differences in the frequencies of TT, TG and GG genotypes of T45G SNP between the GDM and control group [p = 1.0000, 0.6179, 0.5797; OR (95%CI) = 1.030 (0.582–1.874), 1.135 (0.683–1.828), 0.833 (0.481–1.420)]. Similarly, the frequencies of GG, GT, and TT genotypes of G276T SNP were comparable in both groups [p = 0.8002, 1.0000, 0.3466; OR (95%CI) = 1.090 (0.654–1.785), 1.022 (0.616–1.665), 0.433 (0.092–1.698)]. Moreover, although adiponectin levels were significantly decreased in GDM group (p = 0.0196) and have shown substantial negative correlations with FBS, 1-hour OGTT, 2-hour OGTT, and HOMA-IR (p < 0.05), they were not significantly different according to genotypes of T45G and G276T polymorphisms both in GDM and control group. Background: Hyperglycemic crises are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Previous studies have proposed methods to predict adverse outcomes of patients in hyperglycemic crises; however, artificial intelligence (AI) has never been used to predict adverse outcomes. We implemented an AI model integrated with the hospital information system (HIS) to clarify whether AI could predict adverse outcomes. Methods: We included 2,666 patients with hyperglycemic crises from emergency departments (ED) between 2009 and 2018. The patients were randomized into a 70%/30% split for AI model training and testing. Twenty-two feature variables from the electronic medical records were collected. The performance of the multilayer perceptron (MLP), logistic regression, random forest, Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM), support vector machine (SVM), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithms was compared. We selected the best algorithm to construct an AI model to predict sepsis or septic shock, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and all-cause mortality within 1 month. The outcomes between the non-AI and AI groups were compared after implementing the HIS and predicting the hyperglycemic crisis death (PHD) score. Results: The MLP had the best performance in predicting the three adverse outcomes, compared with the random forest, logistic regression, SVM, KNN, and LightGBM models. The areas under the curves (AUCs) using the MLP model were 0.852 for sepsis or septic shock, 0.743 for ICU admission, and 0.796 for all-cause mortality. Furthermore, we integrated the AI predictive model with the HIS to assist decision making in real time. No significant differences in ICU admission or all-cause mortality were detected between the non-AI and AI groups. The AI model performed better than the PHD score for predicting all-cause mortality (AUC 0.796 vs. 0.693). Conclusions: A real-time AI predictive model is a promising method for predicting adverse outcomes in ED patients with hyperglycemic crises. Further studies recruiting more patients are warranted. Objective: To investigate associations between parenting styles during childhood and diabetes in adulthood in a Japanese community. Methods: In 2011, 710 community-dwelling Japanese residents aged ≥ 40 years were assessed for the presence of diabetes and for their perceptions of the parenting style of their parents, as measured using the "care" and "overprotection" scales of the Parental Bonding Instrument. Care and overprotection scores for each parent were dichotomized by age-specific median values. Diabetes mellitus was defined as a fasting plasma glucose level of ≥ 7.0 mmol/L, a 2-h post-loaded glucose level of ≥ 11.1 mmol/L, HbA1c ≥ 6.5%, and/or the current use of insulin or oral glucose-lowering agents. The odds ratios (ORs) for prevalent diabetes were calculated using a logistic regression model. Results: The prevalence of diabetes was 14.9%. Subjects with a high paternal overprotection score had a significantly greater likelihood of prevalent diabetes than those with a low paternal overprotection score after adjusting for confounders (OR 1.71, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.06–2.77), while there was no significant association between paternal care and diabetes. Additionally, the multivariable-adjusted ORs for the presence of diabetes were significantly higher in subjects with a low maternal care score (OR 1.61, 95%CI 1.00–2.60) or in subjects with a high maternal overprotection score (OR 1.73, 95%CI 1.08–2.80). Moreover, the subjects with a low care score and high overprotection score for both their father and mother had a significantly higher multivariable-adjusted OR of diabetes than those with a high care score and low overprotection score for both parents (OR 2,12, 95%CI 1.14–3.95). Background: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is dramatically increasing around the world, and patients are getting younger with changes in living standards and lifestyle. This study summarized and analyzed the clinical characteristics of different types of newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus patients with an onset age between 18 and 40 years to provide clinical evidence for the early diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, reduce short-term and long-term complications and offer scientific and personalized management strategies. Methods: A total of 655 patients newly diagnosed with early-onset diabetes mellitus in the Department of Endocrinology, the First Medical Center of PLA General Hospital from January 2012 to December 2022 were retrospectively enrolled in this study, with an onset age of 18–40 years. Their clinical data were collected and investigated. All patients were divided into two groups according to whether they presented with diabetic microangiopathy. Similarly, patients with early-onset type-2 diabetes were grouped in accordance with whether they had ketosis at the time of diagnosis. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze risk factors, and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to explore the predictive value of significant risk factors. Results: The findings were as follows: (1) Of 655 enrolled patients, 477 (72.8%) were male and 178 (27.1%) were female, with a mean age of onset of was 29.73 years ± 0.24 SD. (2) The prevalence of early-onset diabetes was gradually increasing. Type-2 diabetes was the most common type of early-onset diabetes (491, 75.0%). The ages of onset of early-onset type-1 diabetes, type-2 diabetes and LADA were mainly 18–24 years, 25–40 years and 33–40 years, respectively. (3) Initial clinical manifestations of early-onset diabetes were classic diabetes symptoms (361, 55.1%), followed by elevated blood glucose detected through medical examination (207, 31.6%). (4) Binary logistic regression analysis suggested that high serum uric acid (UA), a high urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) were risk factors for microangiopathy in early-onset diabetes patients (P < 0.05). The area under the curve (AUC) on ROC analysis of the combination of UA, UACR and DPN was 0.848, 95% CI was 0.818 ~ 0.875, sensitivity was 73.8% and specificity was 85.9%, which had higher predictive value than those of UA, UACR and DPN separately. (5) Weight loss, high glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and young onset age were risk factors for ketosis in patients with early-onset type-2 diabetes (P < 0.05). Conclusion: (1) Men were more likely to have early-onset diabetes than women. (2) Early-onset diabetes patients with high serum uric acid levels, high UACRs and peripheral neuropathy were prone to microangiopathy. Comprehensive evaluation of these risk factors could have higher predictive value in the prediction, diagnosis and treatment of microvascular lesions. Background: Poor glycemic control increases the risk of acute metabolic derangements and long-term consequences, which are the main causes of morbidity and mortality. Maintaining adequate glycemic control is challenging for children with diabetes, particularly in resource-limited settings. There is a paucity of data on the magnitude of poor glycemic control and its predisposing factors in Ethiopian particularly in this study setting. Hence, we aimed to assess the magnitude of poor glycemic control and its associated factors among children and adolescents with type 1 diabetic mellitus in Jugol and Hiwot Fana Compressive Specialized University Hospitals in Harar, eastern Ethiopia. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 231 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus in Jugol and Hiwot Fana Compressive Specialized University Hospitals. Participants were included consecutively in the follow-up clinic from November 15, 2022 to January 15, 2023. Data were collected through an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire and a review of medical records. A binary logistic regression model with an adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and a 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to identify the factors associated with poor glycemic control. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Result: A total of 231 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus were included. The magnitude of poor glycemic control was 166 (71.9%) with 95% CI 66.0–77.7%). In multivariable analysis, the age of the child (aOR = 0.19, 95% CI: 0.05–0.83), education of the caregiver (aOR = 4.13;95% CI: 1.82–9.46), meal frequency less than three (aOR = 3.28; 95% CI: 1.25–8.62), and consumption of forbidden foods (aOR = 3.17; 95% CI: 1.21–8.29) were factors significantly associated with poor glycemic control. Conclusion: Two-thirds of participants had poor glycemic control. There was a statistically significant association between the age of the child, education of the caregiver, meal frequency, and forbidden foods with poor glycemic control. Background: This multi-center, cross-sectional study intended to explore the prevalence and risk factors of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Methods: Patients who met the PCOS Rotterdam diagnostic criteria were enrolled in 6 centers in China, and age-matched healthy volunteers were also recruited. Data were collected including medical history, physical characteristics, and blood tests (liver function, blood lipids, blood glucose and insulin, sex hormones, etc.). Transvaginal or transrectal ultrasound was employed to identify polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM). The serological score Liver Fat Score (LFS) >-0.640 was used for the diagnosis of NAFLD, and the diagnosis of MAFLD was made according to the 2020 new definition. Results: A total of 217 PCOS patients and 72 healthy controls were included. PCOS patients had impaired glucose and lipid metabolism, higher liver enzymes and LFS. Both NAFLD (33.6%) and MAFLD (42.8%) was more prevalent in PCOS patients than in controls (4.2%, P < 0.001). Logistic regression results showed that HOMA-IR ≥ 3.54 and ALT ≥ 18.2 were independently associated with NAFLD (P < 0.001) and MAFLD (P ≤ 0.001). The prevalence of NAFLD was significantly higher in PCOS patients with free androgen index (FAI) > 8 (53.8% versus 17.4%, P < 0.001) and BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2 (57.3%, 11.3%, P < 0.001). Conclusion: The prevalence of NAFLD/MAFLD in PCOS patients was significantly higher than that in healthy controls and was independently associated with HOMA-IR and ALT. Background: To investigate the prevalence of euthyroid sick syndrome (ESS) and to evaluate the outcomes and risk factors associated with ESS among hospitalized patients with diabetic ketosis (DK) or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Methods: Laboratory and clinical data of 396 adult hospitalized DK/DKA patients with or without ESS were collected and analyzed. Spearman linear analysis and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate correlated factors of thyroid hormones and risk factors of ESS. Results: Most of the individuals were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (359/396, 90.7%). The prevalence of ESS was 57.8% (229/396). Patients in ESS group were older and had a longer course of diabetes. Levels of thyroid hormones, serum lipids, and parameters reflecting acidosis were significantly decreased in ESS group. The proportion of patients with infection, acute renal injury and DKA was significantly higher in ESS group than in control group, accompanied by longer hospitalization stay and higher hospitalization costs. Free triiodothyronine positively correlates with albumin, eGFR, parameters reflecting acidosis and lipid profiles (All P < 0.001), and negatively correlates with age, onset age, 24-h urine albumin, hsCRP and WBC count (All P < 0.001). Hypoalbuminemia, low level of carbon dioxide combining power, high level of HbA1c and WBC, and co-infection are shown to be risk factors for ESS (OR = 0.866, 0.933, 1.112, 1.146, 1.929, respectively; All P < 0.05). Conclusions: The prevalence of ESS was high in adult DK/DKA patients. Patients with ESS had inferior clinical and socioeconomic outcomes. Purpose: Obesity has been demonstrated to improve bone mineral density (BMD), according to previous research. Nevertheless, there is a dearth of clarity regarding the optimal body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) for achieving the highest beneficial BMD in postmenopausal women. The objective of this study was to establish the correlation between obesity and BMD. Methods: The relationship between BMI, WC, and BMD was examined by using multivariate logistic regression models, fitting smoothing curves and utilizing the latest data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) survey conducted between 2007 and 2018. Furthermore, the analysis of saturation effects was employed to examine the association of nonlinear connections among BMI, WC, and BMD. Results: The research examined information from a combination of 564 participants. A significant correlation between BMD and BMI as well as WC was observed in our findings. The enduring correlation between BMI and WC with BMD was demonstrated across subgroup analyses categorized by age and race, except among other Hispanic and other race. Furthermore, the smoothing curve fitting indicated that there existed not just a linear correlation among BMI, WC, and BMD, but also a saturation threshold in the association of these three factors. Objective: The objective was to analyze the relationship between serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25(OH)D) level and albuminuiria in middle-aged and older patients with type 2 diabetes of Gansu Province. Methods: Data pertaining to 380 in-patients with type 2 diabetes were collected. Subjects were classified groups based on gender,age,25(OH)D,BMI and UACR.Serum 25(OH)D and other clinical characteristics among various UACR groups were compared.The relationship between albuminuiria and 25(OH)D was analyzed. Results: Out of the 380 subjects, 83.4%were classified as vitamin D deficiency, 14.5%were classified as vitamin D insufficiency, while 2.1% were classified as vitamin D sufficiency. Among the participants,41% had albuminuria (microalbuminuria,28.7%;macroalbuminuria,12.3%).The prevalence of 25(OH)D deficiency in the albuminuria group(84.6%) was significantly higher than that in the normoalbuminuria group(82.6%)(Mann–Whitney U test:Z = -3.86,P = 0.000); patients with macroalbuminuria had the highest prevalence of 25(OH)D deficiency (91.5%; P < 0.01 versus normoalbuminuria).A binary logistic analysis demonstrated that 25(OH)D were protective factors for albuminuria. Conclusions: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with albuminuria was overtly higher than that in patients without albuminuria among middle-aged and older adults with type 2 diabetes. Background: This study was to explore the association between dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) consumption and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), all-cause mortality, and CVD-specific mortality. Methods: This retrospective cohort study extracted demographic and clinical data of 38,838 adult participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database in 2003–2018. We explored the association between octadecadienoic acid (ODA), octadecatrienoic acid (ALA), octadecatetraenoic acid (ODTA), eicosatetraenoic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and different CVDs using weighted univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses with odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The PUFAs were divided into four levels according to the quartiles (≤ Q1, Q1 to Q2, Q1 to Q2, > Q3). Weighted univariate and multivariate COX regression analyses with hazard ratio (HR) and 95% CI were used for exploring the association between PUFAs and all-cause mortality, CVD-specific mortality and other cause-specific mortality. Results: During the follow-up, a total of 4,908 (9.12%) eligible participants died. The results showed that after adjusting for covariates, ODTA intake was related to low odds of coronary heart disease (CHD) [OR = 0.75, 95%CI: (0.64–0.88)]. Q1-Q2 quartile of ALA [OR = 0.81, 95%CI: (0.66–0.99)] and Q2-Q3 quartile of DPA [OR = 0.78, 95%CI: (0.62–0.99)] intakes were linked to low odds of heart attack, and > Q3 quartile of ODA intake was associated with low odds of congestive heart failure (CHF) [OR = 0.66, 95%CI: (0.49–0.90)] and stroke [OR = 0.65, 95%CI: (0.47–0.90)]. Q2-Q3 quartile of DPA intake was linked to low odds of angina [OR = 0.76, 95%CI: (0.58–0.99)]. Higher ALA intake was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality [Q2-Q3: HR = 0.86, 95%CI: (0.74–0.99); > Q3: HR = 0.76, 95%CI: (0.63–0.91)]. Additionally, Q2-Q3 quartile of ALA, Q1-Q2 quartile of AA and DPA intakes were respectively related to a low risk of CVD-specific mortality, while that > Q3 quartile of ALA related to that of mortality by other causes. Conclusion: Our study found that PUFAs were associated with different CVDs, and higher ALA intake was related to lower risk of all-cause mortality. Background: Osteoporosis is a prevalent condition characterized by low bone density and increased risk of fractures, resulting in a significant healthcare burden. Previous research has suggested that serum ferritin levels may be related to the risk of developing osteoporosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary iron intake and the development of osteoporosis. Methods: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2005 and 2018, a total of 11,690 adults aged over 20 were evaluated. Bone mineral density (BMD) measurements of the femoral neck and lumbar spine were used to assess osteoporosis and osteopenia. Dietary iron intake was determined using food intake interviews and the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies. Logistic regression models were applied to investigate the association between dietary iron consumption and osteopenia and osteoporosis. Results: After adjusting for sociodemographic factors, compared with those who had the first quartile (Q1) of dietary iron intake, the odds ratio (OR) for osteopenia across the quartiles of dietary iron intake levels was 0.88 (95%CI: 0.79–0.98), 0.80 (95%CI: 0.72–0.89), and 0.74 (95%CI: 0.67–0.83) for Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively. And the OR for osteoporosis across the quartiles of dietary iron intake levels was 1.00, 0.77 (95%CI: 0.50–1.19), 0.54 (95%CI: 0.34–0.89), and 0.83 (95%CI: 0.54–1.29) for Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively. Notably, the observed association was significant among females but not males. Conclusion: The risk of osteopenia/osteoporosis in females decreases with a moderate increase in dietary iron consumption. For females to preserve bone health, moderately increasing their dietary iron intake without overindulging should be seen as a key approach. Background: The weight-adjusted waist circumference index (WWI) is a novel obesity indicator that offers improved accuracy in assessing both muscle and fat mass compared to traditional measures. This study aimed to investigate the association between WWI and bone mineral density (BMD) in adults. Methods: Weighted multivariate logistic regression, subgroup analysis, interaction tests and restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves were used to explore the relationship between WWI and BMD based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Results: This study had 40,568 individuals in total. At all four measurement sites, we detected a negative linear correlation between WWI and BMD. Even when quartile factors for WWI were created, this unfavorable connection maintained. In comparison to those in the lowest quartile, those in the highest percentile of WWI showed declines in lumbar BMD of 0.08 g/cm2 and femoral neck BMD of 0.03 g/cm2, respectively. This adverse correlation, nevertheless, differed among several categories. Conclusions: Our findings suggest an adverse correlation between WWI and BMD among US adults. Background: It is not well understood whether glucose control in the early stage of acute pancreatitis(AP) is related to outcome. This study aimed to investigate the association between blood glucose time in range (TIR) of 70–180 mg/dL in the first 72 h(h) on admission and the progression of AP. Methods: Individuals admitted with AP to the Gastroenterology Department of the Affiliated Changzhou No.2 People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University between January 2017 and December 2021 were included and retrospectively evaluated. The percentage of TIR between 70 and 180 mg/dL in the first 72 h was calculated. According to the progress of AP at discharge, patients were divided into mild pancreatitis(MAP), and moderately severe acute pancreatitis (MSAP), or severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) groups. We examined the association between TIR or TIR ≥ 70% and AP severity using logistic regression models stratified by a glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level of 6.5%. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to assess the ability of the TIR to predict MSAP or SAP. Results: A total of 298 individuals were included, of whom 35 developed MSAP or SAP. Logistic regression analyses indicated that TIR was independently associated with the incidence of more serious AP (odds ratio [OR] = 0.962, 95% CI = 0.941–0.983, p = 0.001). This association remained significant in individuals with HbA1c levels ≤ 6.5% (OR = 0.928, 95% CI = 0.888–0.969, p = 0.001). A TIR ≥ 70% was independently associated with reduced severity only in people with well-antecedent controls (OR = 0.238; 95% CI = 0.071–0.802; p = 0.020). TIR was not powerful enough to predict the severity of AP in both patients with poor antecedent glucose control (AUC = 0.641) or with HbA1c < 6.5% (AUC = 0.668). Background: Oxidative stress (OS) is associated with a variety of non-communicable diseases, including MetS, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease through increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and impairment of antioxidant defense mechanisms. Antioxidants can protect cells against free radical damage, so it seems important to determine the relationship between the quality of dietary antioxidants intake and chronic diseases. The Dietary Antioxidant Quality Score (DAQS) is obtained by adding the daily intake of known dietary vitamins and minerals, including selenium, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E, compared to the recommended daily intake (RDI). Therefore, this study aims to determine the relationship between DAQS, serum lipids, markers of glucose homeostasis, blood pressure and anthropometric features among obese adults. Methods: In the present cross-sectional study, 338 individuals who were obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) aged 20-50 years were recruited from Tabriz and Tehran, Iran. A validated semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) with 168 food items was used to quantify dietary consumption; accordingly, DAQS was computed. Blood biomarkers were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. A standard mercury sphygmomanometer was used to assess blood pressure, and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was performed to determine body composition. The association between the DAQS tertiles and biochemical variables was investigated using multinomial logistic regression. Results: Participants in the highest tertile of DAQS have a lower diastolic blood pressure (DBP) values in all of the adjusted models [odds ratio (OR) = 0.920; confidence interval (CI)= 0.852-0.993, P-value = 0.03] in the analysis of co-variance (ANCOVA) model. Similarly, subjects at the second tertile of DAQS had lower DBP compared with the first tertile in age and sex-adjusted model [OR= 0.937; CI= 0.882-0.997]. There was no statistically significant difference for other metabolic parameters in different DAQS tertiles. Conclusion: According to our findings, higher DAQS was associated with lower DBP among obese adults with obesity in two major cities of Iran (Tehran and Tabriz). Background: Insulin resistance (IR) and obesity are risk factors for hypertension; triglyceride-glucose (TyG) is known as a surrogate for IR. The present study investigated the association between the triglyceride-glucose body mass index (TyG-BMI) index and the risk of hypertension in Iranian adults. Methods: This study was conducted on a sample of 8,610 participants from the baseline phase of the Ravansar non- communicable diseases (RaNCD) in Iran. A logistic regression model was used to evaluate the relationship between TyG-BMI and hypertension. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was conducted to estimate the predictive power of TyG-BMI for hypertension. Results: A total of 4176 men and 4434 women with an average age of 46.74 years were examined. The anthropometric indices were significantly higher in hypertensive than normotensive subjects (P < 0.001). The level of physical activity was significantly higher in the bottom quartiles (P < 0.001). The odds of hypertension in the highest quartile and 3.10 (95% CI: 2.28, 4.16) times significantly higher than the bottom quartile of the TyG-BMI index. The discriminating ability of TyG-BMI to predict blood pressure was 61% (AUC: 0.61; 95% CI: 0.57, 0.63), and higher than BMI and TyG. Conclusion: The TyG-BMI index is associated with an increase in the odds of hypertension. Therefore, the TyG-BMI index can be a new clinical index for early diagnosis of hypertension. Purpose: The primary objective of this study was to explore the association of vitamin D with the monocyte to HDL-C ratio (MHR) among medical staff in Chengdu, China. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study involved 538 medical staff, including 393 females and 145 males, and included data on gender, age, body mass index, and laboratory parameters (including complete blood count, vitamin D levels, lipid, etc.). According to serum 25 (OH)D < 20 ng/ml as vitamin D deficiency, subjects were divided into two groups based on serum 25 (OH)D levels: a vitamin D deficiency group with serum 25 (OH)D < 20 ng/ml and a vitamin D sufficiency group with serum 25 (OH)D ≥ 20 ng/ml. When considering vitamin D as a categorical variable, a multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the risk factors associated with vitamin D deficiency. On the other hand, when examining the factors influencing vitamin D levels as a continuous variable, a multiple linear regression model was utilized. Results: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was 86.25% among all the participants. Males exhibited a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency compared to females (β=0.383, P = 0.026). Vitamin D deficiency risk decreased with age (β = 0.910, P < 0.001). Additionally, elevated values of MHR were associated with an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency (β = 1.530, P = 0.019). When treating vitamin D as a continuous variable, the results of multiple linear regression revealed that age (β = 0.342, P < 0.001), and TG (β=-1.327, P = 0.010) were independent influencing factors for vitamin D levels, indicating that vitamin D levels increase with age. A reverse association between MHR and vitamin D levels demonstrated a marginal trend toward significance (β=-0.581, P = 0.052). Background: To investigate the association between clinical periodontal parameters of periodontitis, serum lipid metabolism markers and adipokines' levels in patients with obesity and periodontitis. Methods: A total of 112 patients admitted to Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University were included in this study. They were divided into normal body weight group (18.5 < body mass index, BMI < 25, n = 36), overweight group (25 ≤ BMI < 30, n = 38), and obesity group (BMI ≥ 30, n = 38) accordingly. The diagnosis of periodontitis was based on the newest international classification of periodontitis. Full-mouth clinical periodontal measurements included: plaque index, periodontal pocket depth, clinical attachment level, and bleeding on probing. Gingival crevicular fluid samples were analyzed for: Interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, Interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein. Serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and glycosylated hemoglobin levels were measured. Visfatin, leptin, resistin, and adiponectin levels in serum were also measured. Results: The ratio of participants without periodontitis was significantly highest in normal weight group, and the proportion of severe periodontitis (stage III and IV) was highest in obesity group. The periodontal pocket depth, clinical attachment level, and the inflammatory cytokines in gingival crevicular fluid in obesity group and overweight group were higher than those in normal body weight group. The BMI and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were significantly positive correlated with periodontal pocket depth and clinical attachment level. Using a Multivariate logistic regression model, periodontitis correlates to BMI, WHR, serum levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, and adipokines such as visfatin, leptin, and resistin. Conclusions: Obesity is positively correlated with the aggravation of periodontitis. Obesity may aggravate the damage to periodontal tissue by regulating the secretion level of adipokines. Background: Dietary advanced glycation end products(AGEs) may contribute to increased inflammation and oxidative stress as risk factors for chronic diseases such as liver disease. In the current study, we aimed to examine the possible association of dietary AGEs with the odds of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in Iranian adults. Methods: A total of 675 participants (225 newly diagnosed NAFLD cases and 450 controls), aged 20–60 years, were recruited for this case-control study. Nutritional data were measured using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and dietary AGEs were determined for all participants. An ultrasound scan of the liver performed the detection of NAFLD in participants of the case group without alcohol consumption and other causes of hepatic disorders. We used logistic regression models, adjusted for potential confounders, to estimate the odds ratios(ORs) and 95% confidence interval(CI) of NAFLD across tertiles of dietary AGEs. Results: Mean ± SD age and body mass index of the participants were 38.13 ± 8.85 years and 26.85 ± 4.31 kg/m2, respectively. The median(IQR) of dietary AGEs in participants was 3262(2472–4301). In the sex and age-adjusted model, the odds of NAFLD were increased across tertiles of dietary AGEs intake(OR:16.48;95%CI:9.57–28.40, Ptrend<0.001). Also, in the final model, after controlling for confounding effects of BMI, smoking, physical activity, marital status, socio-economic status, and energy intake, the odds of NAFLD were increased across tertiles of dietary AGEs intake(OR:12.16; 95%CI:6.06–24.39, Ptrend<0.001).
