Abstract Background To explore the potential of histogram analysis (HA) of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) in the identification of extramural venous invasion (EMVI) in rectal cancer patients. Methods This retrospective study included preoperative images of 194 rectal cancer patients at our hospital between May 2019 and April 2022. The postoperative histopathological examination served as the reference standard. The mean values of DCE-MRI quantitative perfusion parameters (K trans , K ep and V e ) and other HA features calculated from these parameters were compared between the pathological EMVI-positive and EMVI-negative groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to establish the prediction model for pathological EMVI-positive status. Diagnostic performance was assessed and compared using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The clinical usefulness of the best prediction model was further measured with patients with indeterminate MRI-defined EMVI (mrEMVI) score 2(possibly negative) and score 3 (probably positive). Results The mean values of K trans and V e in the EMVI-positive group were significantly higher than those in the EMVI-negative group (P = 0.013 and 0.025, respectively). Significant differences in K trans skewness, K trans entropy, K trans kurtosis, and V e maximum were observed between the two groups (P = 0.001,0.002, 0.000, and 0.033, respectively). The K trans kurtosis and K trans entropy were identified as independent predictors for pathological EMVI. The combined prediction model had the highest area under the curve (AUC) at 0.926 for predicting pathological EMVI status and further reached the AUC of 0.867 in subpopulations with indeterminate mrEMVI scores. Conclusions Histogram Analysis of DCE-MRI K trans maps may be useful in preoperative identification of EMVI in rectal cancer, particularly in patients with indeterminate mrEMVI scores.

Materials and methods A total of 117 patients (32 malignant and 85 benign) who had undergone DCE-MRI for pretreatment evaluation were retrospectively included. Histogram parameters including mean, median, entropy, skewness, kurtosis and 10th, 90th percentiles were calculated from time to peak (TTP) (s), wash in rate (WIR) (l/s), wash out rate (WOR) (l/s), and maximum relative enhancement (MRE) (%) mono-exponential models. The Mann–Whitney U test was used to compare the differences between the benign and malignant groups. The diagnostic value of each significant parameter was determined on Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Multivariate stepwise logistic regression analysis was used to identify the independent predictors of the different tumor groups. Results For both the benign and malignant groups and the comparisons among the subgroups, the parameters of TTP and MRE showed better performance among the various parameters. WOR can be used as an indicator to distinguish Warthin’s tumors from other tumors. Warthin’s tumors showed significantly lower values on 10th MRE and significantly higher values on skewness TTP and 10th WOR, and the combination of 10th MRE, skewness TTP and 10th WOR showed optimal diagnostic performance (AUC, 0.971) and provided 93.12% sensitivity and 96.70% specificity. Methods Thirty‐three patients with 33 lesions who had been diagnosed with lung cancer were enrolled in this study. They were divided into three groups: squamous cell carcinoma (SCC, 15 cases), adenocarcinoma (AC, 12 cases) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC, 6 cases). Preoperative imaging (conventional imaging and DCE-MRI) was performed on all patients. The Exchange model was used to measure the phar- macokinetic parameters, including Ktrans, Vp, Kep, Ve and Fp, and then the histogram parameters meanvalue, skewness, kurtosis, uniformity, energy, entropy, quantile of above five parameters were analyzed. The expression of PTEN, P-Akt and m-TOR were assessed by immunohistochemistry. Spearman correlation analysis was used to compare the correlation between the quantitative perfusion histogram parameters and the expression of PTEN, P-Akt and m-TOR in different pathological subtypes of lung cancer. Abstract Background The background parenchymal enhancement at breast magnetic resonance imaging use to predict breast cancer attracts many searchers to draw a possible relationship. However, the results of their relationships were conflicting. This meta-analysis was performed to assess breast cancer frequency associations with background parenchymal enhancement. Methods A systematic literature search up to January 2020 was performed to detect studies recording associations between breast cancer frequency and background parenchymal enhancement. We found thirteen studies including 13,788 women at the start with 4046 breast cancer. We calculated the odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence intervals (CIs) between breast cancer frequency and background parenchymal enhancement by the dichotomous technique with a random or fixed-effect model. Results Women with minimal or mild background parenchymal enhancement at breast magnetic resonance imaging did not have any risk of breast cancer compared to control women (OR, 1.20; 95% CI 0.54–2.67). However, high background parenchymal enhancement at breast magnetic resonance imaging (OR, 2.66; 95% CI 1.36–5.19) and moderate (OR, 2.51; 95% CI 1.49–4.21) was associated with a significantly higher rate of breast cancer frequency compared to control women. Conclusions Our meta-analysis showed that the women with high and moderate background parenchymal enhancement at breast magnetic resonance imaging have higher risks, up to 2.66 fold, of breast cancer. We suggest that women with high or moderate background parenchymal enhancement at breast magnetic resonance imaging to be scheduled for more frequent follow-up and screening for breast cancer to avoid any complications.
