Medical staff shortages in coastal areas must be tackled to help narrow stark health inequalities, England’s chief medical officer has recommended. In his annual report1 for 2021 focusing on health in coastal communities, Chris Whitty highlighted that people living in coastal areas of England have some of the worst health outcomes in the country, with low life expectancy and high rates of many major diseases. “If we do not tackle the health problems of coastal communities vigorously and systematically there will be a long tail of preventable ill health which will get worse as current populations age,” Whitty said.
