This study analyzes the perceptions and attitudes of two groups of speakers regarding the variants of /r/produced in a comedy show broadcasted in social media. The study chose a sample of sounds in context, which included front and back variants of /r/. A total of 80 speakers (40 residents in Cleveland, OH and 40 residents in Lancaster, PA) listened to the samples and completed an online questionnaire to evaluate the acceptability of the variants and elicit judgments based on questions about the use of the posterior variants. Half of the participants were of Puerto Rican origin, and the other half from other Spanish-speaking countries. The study contributes to reevaluating the perception of the linguist when distinguishing between standard and non-standard sounds, and the level of acceptability that the participants assign to the production of the standard and nonstandard variants of /r/.
