This work reports anatomic and ultrastructural characteristics of bulliform cells in Loudetiopsis chrysothrix (Nees) Conert and Tristachya leiostachya Nees. Both the species presented leaf rolling under water stress. The main characteristics observed in these cells were: periclinal wall thinner than the adjacent epidermal wall; abundance of pectic substances in cuticular layer; sinuous anticlinal walls with ramified plasmodesmata; vacuome formed by a developed vacuole or innumerous small vacuoles; abundance of phenolic substances and oil drops. These characteristics suggested the involvement of bulliform cells in the mechanism of foliar involution in the studied species.Este trabalho relata as características anatômicas e ultra-estruturais das células buliformes em Loudetiopsis chrysothrix (Nees) Conert e Tristachya leiostachya Nees. Ambas as espécies apresentam enrolamento foliar em condições de estresse hídrico. As principais características observadas nessas células foram: paredes periclinais mais delgadas que as epidérmicas adjacentes; abundância de substâncias pécticas na camada cuticular; paredes anticlinais sinuosas com plasmodesmas ramificados; vacuoma formado por um vacúolo desenvolvido ou inúmeros vacúolos pequenos; abundância de substâncias fenólicas e gotas de óleo dispersas. As características observadas sugerem o envolvimento das células buliformes no mecanismo de involução foliar nas espécies estudadas.

With the objective of studying the connection between calcium oxalate crystals formation and the phloem, fragments of leaves of Peltodon radicans Pohl (Lamiaceae) were fixed and processed, for light and electron-transmission microscopes. It was observed that the crystals occurred in the cells of the bundle sheath, juxtaposed in relation to the phloem. Intermediary cells established a connection between the sieve element and crystal-bearing sheath cells. Calcium was present abundantly in the cytoplasm of sheath cells as calcium oxalate crystals. The presence of calcium was also detected in the intermediary cells, but in the sieve elements it was not detected. There was, therefore, an increasing concentration gradient of calcium in the sieve elements from sheath cells. Thus, we hypothesized that the formation of calcium oxalate crystals regulates calcium levels in the sieve elements.Com o objetivo de estudar a relação entre cristais de oxalato de cálcio e floema, fragmentos de folhas de Peltodon radicans foram fixados e processados, segundo métodos usuais, para estudos ao microscópio de luz e eletrônico de transmissão. Observou-se que os cristais ocorrem nas células da bainha do feixe, lateralmente em relação ao floema. Células intermediárias estabelecem conexão entre elemento crivado e células da bainha, portadoras de cristais, com crescimento intrusivo entre estas. Íons cálcio são abundantes no citoplasma das células da bainha que contém cristais de oxalato de cálcio. Nas células intermediárias a detecção ultra-citoquímica de cálcio também apresentou resultados positivos, enquanto nos elementos crivados a presença deste íon não foi constatada. Há, portanto, um gradiente crescente de concentração de cálcio dos elementos crivados para as células da bainha. Assim, formulamos a hipótese de que a formação de cristais de oxalato de cálcio tem, em P. radicans, o objetivo de controlar os níveis de cálcio citossólico nos elementos crivados.

The leaf ultrastructure of five Xyris species were examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and histochemical methods. All studied leaves show some features in epidermis and mesophyll, which were of considerable adaptative significance to drought stress. Such features included the occurrence of a pectic layer on the stomatal guard cells and the presence of a network of pectic compounds in the cuticle. Pectic compunds were also in abundance in lamellated walls of the mesophyll cells and on the inner surface of the sclerified cell walls of the vascular bundle sheaths. There were also specialized chlorenchymatous "peg cells" in the mesophyll and drops of phenolic compounds inside the epidermal cells.Foi estudada a ultra-estrutura foliar de cinco espécies brasileiras de Xyris, utilizando microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV), microscópio eletrônico de transmissão (MET) e métodos histoquímicos. Na epiderme e mesofilo de todas as folhas estudadas encontram-se caracteres que podem ser interpretados como adaptativos a condições xéricas. Tais caracteres incluem a presença de uma camada parietal interna de natureza péctica nas células oclusivas e a ocorrência de finas ramificações elétron-densas, também de natureza péctica, formando uma rede na camada cuticular. Compostos pécticos também são freqüentes nas paredes lameladas das células do mesofilo e na superfície interna das paredes esclerificadas das células da bainha dos feixes vasculares. Ocorrem, ainda, acúmulos de compostos fenólicos no vacúolo das células epidérmicas e células especializadas no mesofilo, denominadas "peg cells".

The seeds of Caesalpinia echinata and C. ferrea behaved as typical endospermic seeds, despite their different morphological classification (exendospermic seeds were described for C. echinata and endospermic seeds for C. ferrea). Then, the aim of this work was to compare, under ultrastructural and histochemical terms, the nature of the storage substances and their accumulation sites, as well as the nutrient flow in seeds of these species. Cotyledons in C. echinata accumulate carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, which are mobilized from the outer to the inner parts as revealed by the position of plasmodesmata. Endosperm in C. ferrea accumulates carbohydrates and in C. echinata accumulates substances during the initial embryogenic phases. Such tissue develops a chalazal haustorium that is responsible for the transport of substances into the endosperm itself and from it into the embryo, confirmed by the presence of transference cells.As sementes de Caesalpinia echinata e C. ferrea comportam-se como endospérmicas, apesar de descritas na literatura como exendospérmicas e endospérmicas, respectivamente. Desta forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar, em termos ultra-estrutural e histoquímico, a natureza das substâncias de reserva e seus tecidos acumuladores, bem como o fluxo de nutrientes nas sementes destas espécies. Os cotilédones em C. echinata acumulam carboidratos, lipídios e proteínas, mobilizados da periferia para o centro, como visto pelo posicionamento dos plasmodesmas. O endosperma em C. ferrea acumula carboidratos e lipídios, e em C. echinata, acumula substâncias nos estádios iniciais da embriogênese. Este tecido desenvolve um haustório calazal agressivo, que transporta substâncias para o endosperma propriamente dito e deste para o embrião, fato confirmado pela presença de células de transferência no endosperma.
