The article presents information about the 2nd Franco-British Reunion organized by the British Association of Dermatology which took place in London, England during July 20-21, 1956. The first day was occupied by eight papers related to dermatology, four of which were read by our French guests and four by British members. The nest morning a clinical meeting was held at Saint Thomas's Hospital at which 41 dermatological cases were demonstrated and afterwards discussed. The principal speakers were dermatologist G. B. Dowling and dermatologist Alice Carleton proposed the health of the guests.

A paper was presented on an animal model for measuring the UV-A protection provided by topical sunscreens. In experimental animals, UV-B damages epidermal Langerhans cells. Induction of subsequent contact sensitivity is impaired because immune suppressor mechanisms are activated. Another paper was presented on the action of topical steroids, dithranol, and PUVA on T lymphocytes and dendritic cells in psoriasis.

Summary Background Scalp ringworm or tinea capitis has become an increasingly important public health issue in the past decade in Great Britain. Recently, certain dermatology departments in London have seen a large increase in tinea capitis in all its forms. Objectives The aim of this paper is to present the detailed analysis of a cohort of 277 patients with tinea capitis seen during a 2-year period together with the latest local figures of tinea capitis cases from an inner city paediatric dermatology service. Methods Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were collected prospectively over 2 years from all cases of ringworm in patients seen in a paediatric clinic specially set up for scalp problems. Results Sixty-two per cent of 277 cases of scalp ringworm were caused by Trichophyton tonsurans , occurring mainly (91%) in patients with Afro-Caribbean hair type, more often in boys (68%), and in the 3–8 year olds (70%). Only 7% of the patients had received appropriate treatment with oral griseofulvin. An additional 156 cases from the general paediatric dermatology clinic showed 91%T. tonsurans infections. Conclusions The prevalence of scalp ringworm appears to be reaching epidemic proportions in certain areas that include south-east London. The clinical meeting took place in the Skin Department of Leeds General Infirmary. This article reports that the inaugural meeting of the Eastern Counties Dermatological Society was held on November 18, 1961, in Cambridge. Physician Peter Lachmann read a short paper entitled "The Significance of the L.E. Phenomenon." One case of a boy aged 13, who developed follicular mucinosis, was discussed in the meeting. On examination there was an eruption of light reddish-brown, somewhat gelatinous papules in the central area of the face. They were uniformly about 2 mm in diameter, discrete, but becoming confluent in irregular infiltrated plaques.

Summary Background Nurse follow-up clinics have become increasingly popular in recent years. Their impact on service delivery within dermatology may be useful in relation to chronic diseases, where education and treatment concordance are important factors in disease management. Objectives To assess the impact of providing a nurse follow-up clinic in addition to the normal service provided by the dermatology outpatient department at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, and to obtain pilot data with which to inform future study design. Methods Newly referred patients aged ≥ 14 years and with a diagnosis of either eczema or psoriasis were identified. In a randomized, parallel-group study with a follow-up period of 6 weeks, participants were randomized either to normal care, or to receive an additional session with a dermatology nurse specialist immediately after their consultation with the dermatologist. The primary outcome measure was change in quality of life at 6 weeks, as assessed by the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Secondary outcomes comprised a comparison of patient knowledge at 6 weeks and the number of consultations (in secondary and primary care) that occurred during the 6-week follow-up period. Results Both groups improved by approximately 3 points on the DLQI scale after 6 weeks. The between-group difference was 0·27 (95% confidence interval - 2·3 to 2·8, P = 0·83). Patients who had seen the nurse were more likely to know how long they should apply treatment (P = 0·05). There was also a marked difference in patients' understanding of how to obtain a repeat prescription (P = 0·01) and from whom they could receive further support (P < 0·001). Following the addition of this service, 33% of follow-up appointments with a doctor were cancelled in the nurse intervention group. From 1987 to 1989 a campaign to promote the early detection of cutaneous malignant melanoma was conducted in the areas of seven health authorities in England and Scotland (total population 3.6 million). Data were collected on 17,155 patients attending pigmented lesion clinics (PLCs) in each study area during the campaign. After a dramatic rise in PLC referral rates in the first month of the campaign the average monthly referral rate among the target population in the study period settled to an average of 13 per 105, a twofold increase compared with the pre-campaign period. Over 8.5% of patients at all PLCs were seen within 4 weeks of referral from their general practitioners. The melanoma to non-melanoma detection ratio was (1:33). The organization of future early detection initiatives needs careful review and planning, in order to improve their effectiveness in all sections of the population, and to enable health services to cope with the increased work-load. The effect on the detection and characteristics of melanoma, resulting from the Cancer Research Campaign's health education programme to promote the early detection of melanoma in the genera! population, was studied from 1987 to 1989. The seven study areas in England and Scotland yield a target population of 3.6 million. Data were collected from local clinic-based registers, pathology laboratories, and the cancer registries. The average annual incidence rates of melanoma were seven and 12 per 105 in males and females, respectively, age-standardized to England and Wales, 1988. These rates are similar to the national figures for Scotland, where there is a national melanoma register, but higher than those reported by the English and Welsh cancer registries. The incidence was significantly higher in females than males (P < 0.001), and increased with age. Fifty-three per cent and 65% of cases in males and females, respectively, were thin (Breslow thickness &les; 1.5 mm), similar to the national figures from Scotland. No significant decrease in the incidence of late-stage tumours was found in either sex as a result of the campaign. Because of difficulties with ascertainment of cases in England, the main evaluation will focus on future trends in mortality rates for melanoma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eighty-three cases of dermatitis caused by wood or sawdust have been seen at St John's Hospital for Disease of the Skin, London, in the last 20 years. The clinical details and results of patch tests are reported. The literature on dermatitis, mucosal irritation, asthma and other toxic effects of woods of some 300 botanical species is reviewed at length, with an index of scientific, trade and vernacular names, chemical formulae of the known sensitizing substances, and a table of the 28 toxic woods most often encountered. The article presents a short history of dermatology in the region of Leeds, England. As a specialty dermatology came late to Yorkshire. Indeed, it was not until 1901 that dermatology was recognized as a specialty at the General Infirmary at Leeds and even then skin disorders were treated by general physicians until the first trained dermatologist was appointed to the staff in 1027. The first book on occupational diseases in English was written by Charles Turner, a general practitioner of Leeds who ran a school of anatomy in the town for several years and was one of the founders of the Leeds School of Medicine in 1831.

The third meeting of the British Psychodermatology Special Interest Group was held at the Medical Society of London, England on January 27, 2005. The incidence of melanoma in the U.K. is increasing more rapidly than that of most other malignant tumours. Sunburn in childhood increases the risk of malignant melanoma in later life and it is therefore essential that protection of children is improved if primary prevention of melanoma is to be effective. We asked 238 parents in Leicester how they protected their children against sunburn, how often their children suffered sunburn, and whether they had heard of malignant melanoma. Although most (80%) had heard of melanoma, 47% did not regularly ensure that their children used a sunblock lotion, and only 34% regularly protected them from the midday sun. Forty-eight per cent of parents stated that their children burned at least once a year.
