Large parts of Asia, Europe, and the eastern USA have high population concentrations in moderate seismic regions (MSR), where very large earthquakes are rare. With rampant construction in the cities located in MSRs, a relatively moderate earthquake can turn into a catastrophe. Limiting the collapse has been the conventional performance objective for regions with high seismicity. However, this does not necessarily translate into a more desirable target of life-safety under design basis earthquake in MSRs. The present paper investigates the seismic performance of non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) buildings that were common before the advent of modern design standards, and are found in very large numbers. An analytical model capturing the shear failure is employed using a drift-based limit state material. The results show that a hybrid index captures moderate damage more accurately than the prevalent drift-based index. The paper further shows that while a generic ground motion suite accurately estimates the median fragility, it fails to capture the uncertainty. A 7-story non-ductile RC archetype building was found to be at a collapse prevention risk of 2 × 10–4. The seismic risk deaggregation reveals that seismic risk consistency can be enhanced by explicit specification of the seismic forces for retrofitting. The study shows that the stringent seismic risk targets can be met by non-ductile buildings in MSR, provided they are designed or retrofitted with constraints on strong column weak beam factors. In this paper, the dynamic response of two 21-story buildings was studied to assess the influence of higher modes in their structural performance. While the first building was structured with ductile moment-resisting steel frames and exhibits a global shear-dominated lateral deformation, the second one uses ductile concentrically braced steel frames and has a global bending-type response. Buildings were virtually located in a soft-soil condition of the lake-bed zone in Mexico City. Nonlinear pushover and dynamic analyses were performed through OpenSees on a detailed 3D-model with plasticity spread along the elements. For this purpose, a set of accelerograms recorded during the Mexico Earthquake of September 19, 2017, were selected, and adjusted to represent the actual seismic hazard at the site. A frequency-domain system identification technique was applied to identify the dynamic characteristics of buildings through a moving-window Fourier analysis, that allows for the estimation of the contribution of higher-modes to their overall nonlinear dynamic response. A ratio of the elastic spectral pseudo-accelerations corresponding to the first two vibration modes is proposed to quantitatively anticipate cases and conditions for which the second mode adversely affects the structural performance of upper stories. The Bucaramanga seismic nest has the highest concentration in volume of intermediate depth seismic events with light and moderate magnitudes (Mb > 4.8) worldwide. Despite the nest depth (Zhypo ≥ 100 km), these events play a crucial role in the seismic hazard assessment for several cities in northern South America (NoSAm), particularly those situated close to their epicenters. Moreover, these earthquakes are widely felt across the country, even hundreds of kilometers away from the nest. This paper assesses the performance of commonly used subduction intraslab Ground Motion Models (GMMs) in predicting the updated nest database gathered and processed by the Colombian Geological Survey. This analysis confirms the necessity of a partially non-ergodic ground motion model for estimating the spectral accelerations produced by Bucaramanga nest earthquakes in northern South America. The GMM presented herein is the first model developed specifically for seismic nests in the region and is conceived as a regionalization of the recent NGA-Sub Abrahamson and Gülerce (Earthq Spectra 38(4):2638−2681, 2022) GMM. Additionally, we provide estimates of the variance components at both the earthquake and station levels and compare the developed GMM with the spectral accelerations recorded for typical earthquakes, for the highest magnitude earthquake in the database, and for a recent Bucaramanga nest earthquake having a moment magnitude over 5. Remote reconnaissance missions are promising solutions for the assessment of earthquake-induced structural damage and cascading geological hazards. Space-borne remote sensing can complement in-field missions when safety and accessibility concerns limit post-earthquake operations on the ground. However, the implementation of remote sensing techniques in post-disaster missions is limited by the lack of methods that combine different techniques and integrate them with field survey data. This paper presents a new approach for rapid post-earthquake building damage assessment and landslide mapping, based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. The proposed texture-based building damage classification approach exploits very high resolution post-earthquake SAR data integrated with building survey data. For landslide mapping, a backscatter intensity-based landslide detection approach, which also includes the separation between landslides and flooded areas, is combined with optical-based manual inventories. The approach was implemented during the joint Structural Extreme Event Reconnaissance, GeoHazards International and Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team mission that followed the 2021 Haiti Earthquake and Tropical Cyclone Grace. Seismic risk estimation for urban building clusters is essential when developing regional seismic resilience models. A masonry structure is a type of building with a large stock, broad applicability, and simplified construction technology. The traditional seismic intensity measures and fuzzy quantification of structural vulnerability levels result in low accuracy in estimating and predicting seismic damage to masonry structure clusters. This paper proposes a method for evaluating bivariate seismic intensity measure. Nonlinear dynamic and spectral analyses were conducted on real acceleration records monitored by ten stations during the Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan, China, on May 12, 2008. The outdated seismic vulnerability level of masonry structures is updated, and an optimized structural seismic risk model based on the seismic damage database of 2407 masonry structures in Dujiangyan city under the influence of the Wenchuan earthquake is established. An innovative seismic risk membership index algorithm was developed, and a vulnerability curve was generated for masonry structures considering multiple risk membership indices. An improved seismic risk index calculation function is proposed using the proposed updated vulnerability level, and the seismic risk index curve and stripe model of typical urban masonry building clusters are established. According to the field investigation of the actual structures in Dujiangyan city affected by the Wenchuan earthquake, the typical failure features and disaster mechanism of masonry structures are reported and analysed, and measures and methods to improve and enhance the seismic capacity of such buildings are proposed. The developed seismic risk model for urban masonry structures can contribute positively to the development of relatively accurate seismic resilience models for urban buildings and can improve the accuracy of seismic risk estimation for masonry structures. The regional seismic risk assessment plays an important role in the disaster prevention and mitigation. The accurate time-history analysis for a region provides an important data base for regional seismic risk assessment. However, an accurate calculation method is limited, then, its accuracy still lacks validation. Meanwhile, there is also a lack of risk assessment methods and indicators applicable to the regional accurate time-history analysis, both of which hinder the seismic risk assessment. In this paper, a regional-scale time history analysis-driven method is proposed for the quantitative evaluation of regional seismic damage risk and verified with a real earthquake damage survey. First, the regional time history analysis method is introduced, including the automatic modeling, response calculating, result analysis and 3-D visualization modules. Second, a calculation method for seismic damage degrees (DD) of buildings is introduced. Subsequently, the probabilistic models of each DD under the ground motions with a specific intensity are calculated based on regional-scale nonlinear time history analysis. Next, the concept of the three-level seismic damage risk is offered, then a determining workflow of seismic damage risks is proposed based on the code-abiding three-level design requirement. Afterward, the regional seismic damage index is suggested for the quantitative evaluation of earthquake-induced damage risk. Finally, the actual seismic damage database of 192 buildings in epicenter of Ludian Earthquake is established through on-site investigations, then used to verify the regional simulation's accuracy. This paper investigates the inelastic displacement ratios (IDRs) and displacement ductility demands of a wide range of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems subjected to pulse-like ground motions (GMs) of the 2023 Pazarcık (Kahramanmaraş) earthquake. A set of twenty-seven GMs characterized as pulse-like are utilized in the study. As-recorded velocity time histories of horizontal components are rotated over 90° at a step of 1° to attain the waveform with the largest peak ground velocity (PGV) over all horizontal orientations. Inelastic displacement ratio and displacement ductility spectra are computed through nonlinear response history analysis (RHA). Local amplifications of both spectra are observed at some periods. The results of this study show that large inelastic displacement and ductility demands are imposed on certain reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Finally, predictive models of the mean inelastic displacement ratio and mean ductility demand spectra (DDS) are developed based on the Gauss–Newton algorithm (GNA). The model provides a strong correlation between the computed and the estimated data, and sufficient convergence criteria. The track structure has an effect on the dynamic characteristics of the bridge structure, which makes the seismic response of the bridge structure complicated. In this paper, an assessment method is proposed to evaluate the seismic risk of bridge structure, including over-limit risk and over-limit scale. Based on a newly proposed simplified model with high accuracy and high computational efficiency, a total of 3000 calculation conditions are analyzed and the sample stability of response is validated to ensure the reliability of the seismic risk analysis. The seismic risks in the longitudinal direction of the track-bridge model are compared with that of the trackless model, and the influence of the constraint effect of China Railway Track System II ballastless track structure on the seismic risk of the structure is obtained. The influence of the number of spans and PGA on track constraints is also revealed. The analysis results, based on a large number of samples, show that although track constraints can reduce the seismic risk of some phenomenon, such as girders' collision, the expected enhancement of longitudinal seismic safety of the system cannot be guaranteed in general, especially when the number of spans is large. However, it is noted that the track constraint can effectively control the over-limit scale of the system, which can reduce the expected repair cost after an earthquake. Therefore, it can be considered that the positive effect of the track constraints is more significant in economy than in structural safety when the bridge is subjected to a longitudinal earthquake excitation. In this paper a novel approach named Multi Pier Macro MPM method is proposed for seismic analysis of steel moment frames. Based on the model an arbitrary multi-bay and multi-story moment frame is substituted by a single bay braced frame consists of two piers and two braces at each story. Piers are continuous and braces are pinned to piers. Both piers and braces are 1D truss elements. The axial, flexural and shear stiffness of the moment frame are provided by axial behavior of piers and braces. MPM method was benchmarked against four steel moment frames including two mid-rise and two high-rise buildings. The seismic responses of equivalent braced frames including maximum floor displacements and story drifts was compared with original moment frames responses as exact results, by means of Non-linear Static Procedure NSP and Non-linear Response History Analysis NL-RHA. NL-RHA was performed using twelve ground motion records scaled to Maximum Design Earthquake MDE and Maximum Considered Earthquake MCE hazard intensities. The results proved the simplified braced frame is able to estimate the seismic responses of mid and high-rise moment frame buildings with high accuracy meanwhile the analysis time and computational cost were limited remarkably. Rapid changes in geotechnical and geological ground conditions lead to significant ground motion variability. This condition mainly occurs at the so-called basin edges, where there is an abrupt transition between soft highly compressible soils and stiffer materials. This problem becomes more relevant in areas where ground subsidence drastically changes the dynamic response of high plasticity clay deposits, such as those found in Mexico City, due to fundamental site period evolution with time. This paper presents site response analyses at an abrupt transition area in the southeast Mexico City region, along the edges of the Xochimilco-Chalco lakes. Considerable damage associated with three-dimensional wave propagation effects was observed in this zone during the September 2017 Puebla-Mexico earthquake. A series of three-dimensional finite difference numerical models of the basin edge were developed to evaluate ground motion variability, considering topographic effects and soil non-linearities. Good agreement between the computed response and the observed damage during the 2017 Puebla-Mexico earthquake reconnaissance was found. In addition, several normal and subduction events with a return period of 250 years were considered to evaluate the effect that frequency content, and strong ground motion duration have on the soil response variability. From the results gathered here, it was established the relevance of accounting for three-dimensional wave propagation fields to assess site effects at basin-edge zones properly and to be able to implement proper risk mitigation measurements at these zones. Barcelona is in an area of low- to medium-seismicity and its earthquake vulnerability and risk has been assessed in different studies over the last 20 years. Most of these works have developed vulnerability models for the representative building classes of the city, trying to capture their main characteristics, and have been mostly represented through fragility curves. However, due to the lack of data for historical earthquake losses in the city, it has not been possible to validate, nor calibrate, any of these vulnerability models. In the absence of earthquake loss data, the objective of this paper is to compare the earthquake risk results of Barcelona, using common hazard and exposure datasets and different sets of vulnerability functions from previous studies to see how they rank compared with other locations with similar studies but more complete historical loss data. The results show large differences between the analysed vulnerability datasets, with some results that in our view tend to overestimate earthquake risk in Barcelona, and also allow identifying critical aspects that require future research. Assessing the actual seismic economic losses of regional building portfolios is essential to quantify the seismic resilience of urban and rural areas. Various building clusters indicate different damage levels under real earthquakes of different intensities, which directly leads to apparent anomalies in the actual economic losses of various building portfolios. This paper proposes an economic loss assessment model for large-scale regional building portfolios, considering the damage probability matrices. The traditional empirical vulnerability quantification method is optimized and updated by combining the analysis methods of probability risk, reliability, macroseismic intensity, and instrument intensity. Five typical building sample sets (total survey area: 56,937.1893 × 104 m2) of 57 typical cataclysmic earthquakes that occurred in Yunnan Province, China, from 1993 to 2022 are collected and processed, and an updated fragility dataset is established. The calculation model considering empirical structural vulnerability and economic loss quantitative parameters is innovatively developed. Combined with the quantitative approaches of the multidimensional nonlinear fitting model and the established regional empirical structural vulnerability database, the seismic loss evaluation model of large-scale regional structures is established. Ultimately, the earthquake loss point cloud and matrix of typical building portfolios in the large-scale zone are developed using cloud analysis and the proposed seismic loss evaluation model. The estimation of seismic damages and debris at the urban scale—at a building-by-building level- is challenging for several reasons. First, commonly used methodologies for seismic damage estimation rarely take into account the local site effects, precisely at the building-level. Second, the available methods for debris estimation fail to estimate at the same time the quantity of debris generated per building according to its damage level and the distribution of the debris (extent and height) around buildings. Finally, the lack of comprehensive data on the building stock and the relevant building properties and their taxonomy further increases the complexity of assessing possible earthquake consequences at an urban scale. This paper addresses these challenges and proposes improvements to the assessment of seismic damages and debris from building-level simulations, along with the development of a 3D building model based on satellite images and heterogeneous data. These developments, applied to the city of Beirut, Lebanon, highlight the control of the site effects on the seismic damage's spatial distribution throughout the city and the large volume and extent of debris to be expected in the city for a strong earthquake. On December 29, 2020, nine months after the March Mw 5.4 Zagreb earthquake and amidst the COVID-19 lockdown, a devastating Mw 6.4 earthquake struck near the town of Petrinja, about 50 km SE from the country's capital Zagreb. It was preceded by the Mw 4.9 foreshock from the day before. The main shock claimed 7 fatalities and caused widespread damage. Historical centers of nearby cities with invaluable heritage buildings were significantly affected as were the many residential buildings, built mainly of unreinforced masonry. Damage was observed as far as 60 km from the epicenter. This paper summarizes the seismological aspects of the Mw 6.4 Petrinja earthquake, the emergency response and the main impacts to people and buildings. The description and findings are based on the field observations and a series of post-earthquake activities led by the team of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Zagreb. Typical damage to buildings and usability data are presented with examples based on 50,000 inspection results. By far the most affected were the unreinforced masonry buildings, followed by confined masonry, whereas reinforced concrete buildings were the least affected. The total direct and indirect losses are estimated to 4.8 billion EUR. The provided information represents a useful basis and impetus for improving emergency action and long-term disaster reduction plans in other regions with similar building exposure and seismotectonic settings. Soil plug formation in open-ended piles due to pile driving is a widely studied phenomenon in onshore applications. The narrow diameters of traditional onshore piles ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 m facilitate plug generation during installation and transfer of enhanced confining stresses across the whole body of the soil plug. Offshore wind monopiles with larger diameters and smaller aspect ratios may not enhance confining stress within the soil plug as effectively as their onshore counterparts. Monopiles are currently the most widespread foundation in the offshore wind sector including in seismic areas. Earthquake shaking can lead to accumulation of excess pore pressure and subsequent liquefaction of the soil retained inside the plug. This research investigates the influence of monopile diameter and confining stress on the development of earthquake-induced excess pore pressure within the soil plug using fully coupled time domain Finite Element Analysis. The results presented in this paper reveal lower accumulation of earthquake-induced excess pore pressure in soil plugs subjected to confining stress. However, the influence of additional horizontal stress caused by monopile driving on the generation of excess pore pressure within the soil plug diminishes as the monopile diameter is progressively increased. This paper provides an overview and introduction to the development of non-ergodic ground-motion models, GMMs. It is intended for a reader who is familiar with the standard approach for developing ergodic GMMs. It starts with a brief summary of the development of ergodic GMMs and then describes different methods that are used in the development of non-ergodic GMMs with an emphasis on Gaussian process (GP) regression, as that is currently the method preferred by most researchers contributing to this special issue. Non-ergodic modeling requires the definition of locations for the source and site characterizing the systematic source and site effects; the non-ergodic domain is divided into cells for describing the systematic path effects. Modeling the cell-specific anelastic attenuation as a GP, and considerations on constraints for extrapolation of the non-ergodic GMMs are also discussed. The seismic response of monopile foundations is a growing area of research as the offshore wind industry expands worldwide, including in earthquake prone regions of the world. This paper presents dynamic centrifuge tests aimed at investigating the dynamic response of monopiles in both dry and saturated sandy soils. The latter case includes soil liquefaction under strong input motions, with measured excess pore pressures indicating liquefaction. The natural frequency of the monopile-soil system is experimentally determined by measuring the response to a sine sweep motion. Strong earthquakes are then applied at this frequency and its harmonics. This paper discusses the response of the monopile in terms of the peak accelerations observed in the dry and saturated tests, as well as using response spectra and amplification ratios. The dynamic bending moments along the pile are also measured to infer the bending moment profile with depth. Finally, two identical monopiles are pushed-over in each of the centrifuge tests to establish the pre and post-earthquake monotonic response, including the lateral stiffness and capacity, which are compared for the dry model tests and the saturated case. Assessment of churches based on empirical data at a territorial scale is a suitable tool to have an overview of the seismic behaviour of this peculiar structural typology and to evaluate their current state of vulnerability. Fragility and vulnerability curves are also aimed to perform the analysis of different seismic scenarios. The paper presents a detailed typological analysis of 633 single-nave churches, as a selected subset of the database previously examined by the authors, with the aim of evaluating more in detail the influence of some parameters, such as masonry typology, church dimensions and presence of the bell tower, on the vulnerability of the overall church. Then, specific analyses are carried out to assess the influence played by single mechanisms on the definition of the overall damage index, with the focus of providing qualitative evaluations and explicit vulnerability and fragility curves related to the most recurring and significant collapse mechanisms. This is an original contribution of the paper in the field of the vulnerability assessment of churches, since nowadays little information is available in the literature about the damage levels related to specific mechanisms, while most attention is still focused on global damage. The October 30, 2020 Earthquake caused unexpectedly significant damage in İzmir considering its distance to the city. This paper evaluates the recorded ground motions, summarizes the performance of structures affected from the earthquake with emphasis on the reasons of damage. A detailed damage assessment was carried out by the Earthquake Engineering Research Center of Middle East Technical University to compile data on the damage of RC and masonry buildings. It was observed that majority of the damage was concentrated in the Bayraklı district due to its peculiar soil properties where many 7–10 story mid-rise RC buildings suffered heavy damage and collapse. The level of amplified ground motions combined with deficiencies of apparently non-code compliant buildings exacerbated the damage. The main reasons of damage were mainly attributed to the presence of soft stories, lack of proper detailing, poor construction quality, presence of heavy overhangs, and hence significant lack of code-compliance in essence. The influence of infill walls on seismic performance of deficient and inadequate buildings was clearly seen in this earthquake. This paper also discusses seismic code requirements in effect and their influence on the observed building performance. The recorded ground motions were compared with the code spectra to evaluate the performance of the buildings. This paper documents performance of cast-in-place reinforced concrete (RC) buildings in the Durrës municipality during Albania earthquake of November 26, 2019 (MW 6.4). Both mid- and high-rise RC buildings were affected by the earthquake, experiencing structural and/or non-structural damage and even collapse in some cases. The authors performed a reconnaissance study after the earthquake and were involved in seismic assessment of buildings in the affected area. Besides the observations related to physical damage of RC buildings, the paper also presents results of a statistical analysis of damaged RC buildings in the Durrës municipality. The discussion in the paper is focused on damage patterns and failure mechanisms that are relevant for the seismic response of RC structures. Most common damage pattern observed after the earthquakes was related to masonry infill walls, which experienced damage and failure in some cases, and affected the performance of adjacent RC columns due to the infill/frame interaction. Taller RC framed buildings (10 storeys and higher) were expected to have RC shear walls; however, these walls were reportedly absent in the damaged buildings of this type. In some cases, masonry infill walls (instead of RC shear walls) were used in the elevator shaft areas, which resulted in inadequate seismic performance. A case study has been presented to illustrate seismic behaviour of mid-rise and high-rise cast-in-place RC buildings in the November 2019 earthquake, and is based on post-earthquake field observations and a detailed seismic assessment of two earthquake-damaged buildings. This paper discusses and compares two recently developed methodologies for the prediction of damage accumulation in structures subjected to multiple earthquakes within their lifetime, one based on a regression model and one based on a Markov-chain based approach. A stochastic earthquake hazard model is considered for generating sample sequences of ground motion records that are then used to estimate the probabilistic distribution of the damage accumulated during the time interval of interest using the various methodologies. A simulation-based approach provides a reference solution against which the other methodologies are compared. Besides assessing the effectiveness and accuracy of the two methodologies, some improvements of the regression model are proposed and evaluated. The comparison between the methodologies is carried out by examining a reinforced concrete (RC) bridge pier model and using the Park–Ang damage index to describe the damage accumulation. The study results demonstrate the importance of considering the possibility of occurrence of multiple shocks in estimating the life-cycle performance of structures and highlight strengths and drawbacks of the investigated methodologies. The response of a two-storey RC school building in the town of Argostoli, Cephalonia Island, Greece, during the seismic sequence of January and February 2014, is examined. The structure was built following an older generation of seismic codes dating from the 1950s, which provide limited strength and ductility against lateral loads. Despite the severity of ground shaking and the two successive events, the building suffered relatively minor damage, like most of the RC buildings in the town. Following a short presentation of some basic seismological, structural and geotechnical aspects of the seismic sequence, the paper focuses on the seismic performance of the structure at hand. To this end, a series of detailed non-linear static and time-history dynamic analyses are reported, which highlight the interplay of soil, foundation and superstructure in modifying the seismic demand. It is demonstrated that SSI had an unexpectedly important (detrimental) role in the behaviour of the structure, increasing its natural period by about 25% and aggravating ductility demand in almost all columns, despite the moderately soft soil conditions (average VS = 180 m/s). Seismic losses due to earthquakes have been shown to have significant economic, social and environmental consequences. Over recent years, research to predict potential economic and social impact due to seismic risk has been increasing. Recognizing that the traditional philosophy of life safety design can lead to extensive damage and demolition which has a large environmental cost, incorporating environmental impacts associated with the expected seismic damage over a building's life is a key step as the building industry moves towards both sustainable and seismically resilient design. This paper introduces a framework that uses environmental indicators quantifying losses from seismic response that can then be used to advocate for a change in seismic performance objectives. First, existing literature and previously developed approaches for quantifying potential environmental impact due to seismic damage are summarized. Next, performance based earthquake engineering concepts are used to demonstrate a probabilistic approach to quantify potential environmental impacts using a range of environmental and resource use indicators over the life span of a case study building. In addition, a case study is presented to compare different environmental indicators between a Code Minimum building and the same building redesigned for a higher seismic performance. The majority of the composition of the environmental indicator values are from the inclusion of the non-repairable scenario, and from the repair activities, the majority of the impacts are from damage to drift sensitive components including curtains walls, partitions and elevators. For the Code Minimum building the non-repairable scenario contributes to between 8 to 11% the total seismic cost. For the Stronger Stiffer building, the non-repairable scenario contributes around 3% of the initial impact. Neglecting non-repairable scenarios does significantly reduce the potential environmental impacts when analyzing buildings designed for current code minimum structural standards. This paper presents the findings of an experimental investigation of the efficiency of several low-cost frictional geotechnical seismic isolation methods on a rigid building model. A total of eleven different aseismic layers were considered. One layer was made of stone pebbles only, whereas the remaining ten layers were composites containing combinations of stone pebbles with different types and positions of "sliding" elements/materials (geogrid, geomembrane, and limestone sand layers). All the samples were exposed to four earthquake accelerograms of different durations and predominant periods, with three levels of peak ground acceleration (PGA): 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 g. The test results confirm that the composite aseismic layers can significantly reduce the inertial/earthquake forces of the rigid building model relative to the stone pebble layer, depending on the type of earthquake and PGA. The motivation of this study stems from a retaining wall made of waste tires. The wall did not suffer any earthquake or tsunami-induced damage during the 2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake, Japan. This paper deals with a case study on this tire retaining wall. Results from a series of field and laboratory investigations are first described. A numerical simulation is also described in which whole tires were used as protective layers in an embankment. The results show that confining effect of each tire, friction between the tires, ductility, and damping inherent in tires contribute towards the excellent performance of the retaining wall during the earthquake loading. The case study also reveals that it is the isolation mechanism due to the vibration absorption capability of rubber particles in tires, which could protect tire retaining structure during the earthquake. Summary: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the efficiency of a low-cost and sustainable timber-based energy dissipation system with recentering ability, which can be used as a seismic isolation system or a tuned mass damper for the seismic protection of structures in developing or developed countries. The system, defined as Dovetail with SPrings (Dove-SP), utilizes the attractive properties of timber to store CO2, thus reducing the carbon footprint of the existing energy dissipation systems: It comprises two timber slabs that are designed to slide against each other in a motion that is restrained by a dovetail sliding joint. Two sliding interfaces that allow this sliding motion at an attractively low friction coefficient are experimentally investigated: A PVC sand-wich (PVC-s) sliding interface, comprising a thin layer of sand that is sand-wiched between two PVC layers and a timber sand-wich sliding interface consisting of a thin layer of sand encapsulated between two beech timber surfaces. A set of low-cost steel springs is designed and installed on both sides of the dovetail joint to recenter the structure back to its original position after the end of an earthquake ground motion excitation. A novel, low-cost and deformable wood material fabricated from delignified balsa wood is used to reduce the pounding effects before the activation of the steel springs. The seismic behavior and the recentering ability of the novel timber-based energy dissipation system subjected to an ensemble of recorded earthquake ground motion excitations was experimentally investigated through a large-scale shaking table investigation at ETH Zurich. This paper proposes a rapid strengthening method for severely earthquake-damaged RC piers. In this strengthening method, high-strength steel bars (HSSB) HTRB600 were used as vertical and horizontal planting rebars anchored into pier footing and pier shaft, and ultra-high-strength concrete (UHPC) was used as grout material. Meanwhile, the UHPC was used to strengthen the damaged plastic hinge region to form the enlarged section to realize the mechanical integrity of the strengthening piers. Utilizing the early strength property of UHPC, the proposed rapid strengthening method can realize the rapid recovery of vertical bearing capacity of severely damaged RC piers, thus ensuring the rapid passage and emergency rescue of bridges after earthquakes. Four severely damaged RC piers under cyclic tests were strengthened and reloaded, and the seismic performance of strengthening and original RC piers was compared, including lateral bearing capacity, lateral stiffness, deformability and hysteretic dissipated energy. Research results show that, for RC piers with only bar buckling but no bar fracture in original specimen, the UHPC enlarged section over strengthens the damaged plastic hinge region, resulting in the plastic hinge of the strengthening piers being relocated to the upper part of enlarged strengthening section. The strengthening pier presents better seismic performance, including lateral bearing capacity, deformability and energy dissipation capacity than original piers. For RC piers with partial longitudinal reinforcement facture, two kinds of strengthening methods, with or without using horizontal planting rebars, were adopted. When using horizontal planting rebars, in spite of presenting asymmetric failure due to the asymmetric damage of original piers, the strengthening RC piers still present comparable seismic performance with original piers. However, the strengthening pier without using horizontal planting rebars presents more distinct pinching effect, lower deformability and hysteretic dissipated energy than original pier. Therefore, the horizontal planting rebars can enhance the force integrity between UHPC enlarged section and pier shaft, and then ensure the seismic performance of strengthening RC piers. Overall, the proposed rapid strengthening method with horizontal planting rebars can not only fulfill the post-earthquake rapid passage demand in short time for the severely earthquake-damaged RC piers, but also ensure the long-term service of strengthening bridge piers by restoring their seismic performance. This paper investigates the effects of soil–structure interaction and site amplification on the seismic response of one of the towers of the Theodosian walls of Constantinople during the Kocaeli earthquake in 1999, that largely damaged it. The interacting system is first analysed in the frequency domain by the well-known replacement oscillator model, turning out that the effect of soil–structure interaction could be relevant. The complete system is then examined by the direct approach considering non linearity of the behaviour of both the structure and the soil. The failure mechanism detected from where stress and plasticization concentrate into the masonry panels is consistent with the out-of-plane mechanism of one of the tower façades triggered by the reference earthquake. The focus was then set on the effectiveness of some retrofitting interventions, including the lateral disconnection of the embedded sides of the tower from the surrounding soil, the soil treatment by grouted columns and the classical technique for masonry rehabilitation. Even though the latter choice is the most common one, retrofitting interventions concentrated into the soil could be effective as well. In this paper we introduce the 3D physics-based numerical simulations (PBS) of ground motion during the Nov 11, 2019, MW 4.9 Le Teil earthquake, which occurred in a low-to-moderate seismicity area in the South-East of France, within the Rhône river valley, which hosts several operating nuclear installations. The numerical code SPEED, developed at Politecnico di Milano, Italy, was used to produce the PBS. After introducing the criteria to construct the numerical model, based on the relatively limited data available, a numerical convergence test was made to identify the frequency range for accurate simulations. Furthermore, the performance of the numerical results against the available strong motion records was assessed quantitatively using Goodness-of-fit (GoF) measures. According to the GoF scores, a good-to-excellent agreement was found on the horizontal components up to 8 Hz, showing that, even without a very detailed 3D numerical model of the medium, that would imply detailed knowledge of the basin shape, of the bedrock-to-basin impedance ratio, as well as of the damping ratio in the basin and its dependence on frequency, the PBS may provide realistic broadband predictions of earthquake ground motion. Nevertheless, as shown by the poorer performance on the vertical component, the high-frequency limitations of PBS, also in relation to the energy radiated by the kinematic source model, is still an issue to be carefully addressed. In spite of these limitations, the results obtained in this work demonstrate that PBS, if suitably calibrated and validated, can be either an alternative or a useful complement to empirical ground motion models, especially in those cases where the region- and site-specific features of ground shaking, including near-source conditions, are typically not accounted for by ergodic empirical models, such as for the seismic risk evaluation of large urban areas and/or of strategic structures, infrastructures and industrial plants. The unwanted vibrations of offshore structures induced by wave or earthquake loads can lead to the reduction of the service life and fatigue failure of the offshore platforms. This paper introduces tuned inerter damper (TID) to a jacket offshore platform as passive control device for mitigating the excessive vibrations of platform structure induced by wave and earthquake loads. An analytical design method is proposed for jacket platforms and the influence of installation location on the modal response is investigated. The proposed design method can determine the optimal installation position and obtain the optimal design parameters by transform the original multi-degree of freedom (MDOF) system to a single DOF (SDOF) modal system. Two sets of closed-form solutions of which corresponding to wave and earthquake excitations are derived based on the H 2 optimization criterion. Further, a practical 90 (m) high and 80 (m) deep in-water jacket offshore platform is used in numerical simulation and the wave forces are modeled using Morison's equation. The case study finds that the optimal installation location of TID is deck level for both wave and earthquake loads. The proposed design method is validated by the numerical example and the results demonstrate that TID system can effectively mitigate the maximum, minimum, and RMS responses of jacket platforms. Besides, the TID is more effective when the jacket platform is under the action of waves and the tuning of TID according to earthquake load is more reliable when the jacket platform subjected to both wave and seismic loads. This paper explores and validates the use of ground shaking scenarios generated via 3D physics-based numerical simulations (PBS) for seismic fragility studies. The 2009 L'Aquila seismic event is selected as case-study application, given the availability of a comprehensive post-earthquake database, gathering observed seismic damages detected on several building typologies representative of the Italian built environment, and of a validated numerical model for the PBS of ground shaking scenarios. Empirical fragility curves are derived as a function of different seismic intensity measures, by taking advantage of an improved statistical technique, overcoming possible uncertainties in the resulting estimates entailed by data aggregation. PBS-based fragility functions are compared to the corresponding sets of curves relying on updated ShakeMaps. The predictive capability of the adopted simulation strategies is then verified in terms of seismic damage scenarios, by respectively coupling PBS- and ShakeMap-based fragility models with the corresponding ground shaking scenarios. In May 2012, two strong earthquakes hit the northern Italy revealing the significant seismic vulnerability of precast reinforced concrete structures and causing severe damage and many collapses, and high economic losses. After the lesson learnt from these events, more reliable seismic design criteria have been established for the design of new structures and different approaches have been proposed for the seismic assessment of the existing structures. In this context, the paper presents the results of a first application of the PRESSAFE-disp method, recently proposed by the authors, allowing to define the fragility curves of precast RC buildings at various limit states, including collapse. A stock of 91 precast buildings in the industrial area of San Felice sul Panaro (Modena) was selected as a benchmark case study to verify the reliability of the method in assessing seismic damage scenarios. In particular, with reference to the 2012 seismic ground-motion, two large-scale stochastic models are outlined to predict the number of the buildings collapsed in the area. The first one is based on a Monte Carlo simulation which incorporates the evaluation of the uncertainties, while the second one is a direct simplified calculation. Comparative considerations on the outcomes of the two methods for different seismic intensities are discussed, including the directionality effect of the ground-motion. To test the soundness of the simulations, the results of the two methods are compared with the real data collected through in-situ surveys. The procedures proposed here result, on average, in good agreement with the observed damage scenario. It is worth noting that, due to the inherent simplicity of the methods, they could be implemented to perform scenario-based seismic loss assessments to estimate the financial consequences of an earthquake affecting one or more industrial areas, and to drive the decision-making process for the seismic retrofit of existing precast RC buildings. The study of the seismic response of long bridges under non-uniform seismic excitation date back to the early 80 s. So far, many methods have been developed to estimate the bridge responses under such excitation. Eurocode-8 is considered the first seismic design code that provided a simplified method for linear seismic analysis of long bridges under non-uniform seismic excitation. In this method, earthquake ground motion at each bridge support is decomposed into uniform and relative excitations. Any desired elastic response quantity of bridge for each input is obtained and results are combined using the SRSS combination rule. In this paper, it is shown that the SRSS method leads to very conservative and unrealistic responses. An alternative combination rule is then recommended for response estimation, and random vibration analysis is used to calculate the correlation coefficient between the two mentioned responses. Efficiency evaluation of the proposed method is investigated by Monte Carlo simulation results of nine long bridges with different geometrical and dynamic characteristics. Two simplified mathematical bridge models for longitudinal and transverse directions are developed. Then, a simple mathematical formula for the correlation coefficient is extracted, and its accuracy and performance are evaluated. The Samos Island (Aegean Sea) Earthquake occurred on 30 October 2020. It produced a tsunami that impacted coastal communities, ground shaking that was locally amplified in some areas and that led to collapse of structures with 118 fatalities in both Greece and Turkey, and wide-ranging geotechnical effects including rockfalls, landsliding, and liquefaction. As a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the reconnaissance of this event did not involve the deployment of international teams, as would be typical for an event of this size. Instead, following initial deployments of separate Greek and Turkish teams, the reconnaissance and documentation efforts were managed in a coordinated manner with the assistance of international partners. This coordination ultimately produced a multi-agency joint report published on the 2-month anniversary of the earthquake, and this special issue. This paper provides an overview of the reconnaissance activities undertaken to document the effects of this important event and summarizes key lessons spanning topic areas from seismology to emergency response. This paper presents the effects of October 30, 2020 Samos-Aegean Sea earthquake on hydraulic structures, lifelines and industrial facilities which mainly located in the western cost of Turkey, within the borders of Izmir and Aydin Cities. These two highly populated cities are known for their importance in contributing country's economics by their industrialized areas. In addition, Izmir is the third largest city of Turkey with its high seismic hazard zone. Although some disruptions in the aftermath of the earthquake were occurred in gas and electricity services, these issues immediately identified, and all systems were managed to reoperate. Damages to the infrastructures were mainly due to the collapse of buildings and tsunami effects. On October 30, 2020 14:51 (UTC), a moment magnitude (M) 7.0 (USGS, EMSC) earthquake occurred in the Aegean Sea. This paper presents the reconnaissance findings regarding the site effects on recorded strong ground motion intensities and duration, along with the resulting induced-structural damage in Izmir Bay and Samos Island, respectively. In all rock records, relatively high intensity long period rock spectral accelerations were observed in the mid to long period range of 0.5–1.5 s, which are attributed to the source, more specifically, to the slower rupture-mechanism of the event. These rich spectral intensities were further amplified by soil site effects and soil-superstructure resonance, leading to two to six times amplified overall responses and prolonged seismic shaking durations, more pronounced in Bayrakli and other Izmir Bay sites in Turkey. However, these amplified and prolonged excitations are still below design basis earthquake levels, which addresses the lack of proper structural design and construction deficiencies, as the underlying causes for the collapse to heavy damage performance of 795 buildings. On the other hand, although located only about 10 km from the rupture (22 km from the epicenter) and within the near fault zone, the town of Vathy on Samos Island (Greece) was rather lightly affected by the earthquake, with relatively few collapsed or heavily damaged buildings, partially attributed to the low height/low weight of structures in the area. However, a concentration of damage in low-rise buildings in Ano Vathy hill is considered indicative of a combination of coupled valley and topography effects on the strong motion. This event once again addressed the need to develop region-specific zonation and provisions, when more general code practices are proven to be inadequate to assess these extreme site effects. A major cause of local to total damages is related to structural pounding in a large number of past earthquakes. In general, these collisions take place as a result of differences in the dynamic characteristics of the colliding structures. To acquire a better perception of the behavior of structures, in this paper, three structures featuring different heights are modeled in series and with various configurations next to each other in OpenSees. To determine the collision effects of the structures, three different configurations of 4-, 8- and 12-story adjacent reinforced concrete special moment resisting frames were considered. Then, by conducting an incremental dynamic analysis, their structural seismic limit state capacities were assessed via 20 near-field record subsets recommended by FEMA-P695. At last, for the above adjacent buildings with various separation distances and configurations, the fragility curves were determined, and the probability of exceedance from the primary Hazus-MH failure criteria was estimated. In addition, the results were compared with those obtained when this phenomenon did not take place for buildings to have a better perception of the pounding phenomenon. The results of the analyses show that arranging adjacent structures in series greatly affects the collapse capacities of the colliding structures. In addition, in the case when the shorter structure is placed in the middle of two taller structures, it results in the most critical situation among all configurations, and in this case, a higher reduction is observed in the structural performance levels. Recent Italian earthquakes have shown the seismic vulnerability of many typical historical masonry churches characterized by one nave and wooden roofs. Under transverse earthquake, the nave transverse response of this kind of churches can be influenced by the geometrical and material features. To increase the seismic performance, strengthening interventions aimed to pursue the global box-behavior by the realization of dissipative roof-structure represent a valid strategy, especially to avoid out-of-plane mechanisms. In this way, the roof structure must be able to represent a tool for the damped rocking of the perimeter walls. Cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels with calibrated metal connections have been recently adopted in experimental tests as a valid solution to obtain a roof-diaphragm with ductile behavior, satisfying the conservative restoration criteria at the same time. In this paper, after a description of the numerical approach for the damped rocking mechanism for one nave configuration church, the effectiveness of different CLT based roof-diaphragms in the nave transverse response is investigated for four historical churches. The seismic responses are performed by comparative dynamic nonlinear analyses and the results are shown in terms of displacements and shear actions transferred to the façade. The influence of the geometrical features of the churches on the nave transversal response is deepened by sensitivity analyses with the aim to predict the displacements and shear variations under the same earthquake excitation. The classification and quantitative description of damage of track structure for high-speed railway girder bridges (HRGBs) are still in the exploratory stage, which seriously interferes with the performance-based seismic damage assessment of HRGBs. In view of this, firstly, from the safety and stability of train operation, this paper defines the damage grade of track structure (intact, slight, moderate, severe and complete damage state) by refining the train operation index value. Secondly, based on the simply supported and continuous girder bridge structures of high-speed railway, a train-track-bridge system (TTBS) model is established, and the additional lateral irregularities of the rail caused by the lateral deflection of the girder are induced. Finally, the influence of the lateral displacement amplitude of the rail and the train velocity on the train safety and stability is discussed. The results indicate that the rail lateral displacement by the reverse translation of the adjacent simply supported spans and the reverse rotation of the adjacent simply supported spans have the most powerful influence on the train safety and stability, respectively. The lateral displacement of rail is proposed as an index to measure the damage of the track structure, and its critical values corresponding to each damage grade in the range of train velocity from 200 km/h to 400 km/h are determined, which can be used for the seismic vulnerability analysis of track structures for HRGBs. This paper proposes a multi-platform simulation method for the seismic performance assessment of masonry infilled reinforced concrete (RC) frames, especially for those that, due to inadequate reinforcing details, tend to undergo shear failure during an earthquake. The multi-platform method is based on a micro–macro modeling approach in which a detailed finite element model of the RC frame is incorporated with a strut model of the infill wall. It exploits the strut model to increase its computational efficiency and the finite element model based on the modified compression field theory to capture the nonlinear behaviour of the RC frame. The proposed method is validated against previously tested frames subjected to lateral loads, and its advantages over the conventional strut models are demonstrated through both quasi-static and dynamic analyses. Two strong earthquakes hit Thessaly region on March 3rd, 2021 (Mw = 6.3) and on March 4th, 2021 (Mw = 6.1). The epicentres of the earthquakes were located at approximately 23 and 29 km respectively NW of Larissa, one of the most populous cities in Greece. Several aftershocks followed thereafter. Although no injuries were recorded, several structures suffered significant damage close to the epicentre, while some others collapsed. Approximately 300 residents of the village of Damasi were transferred to temporary settlements and tents. The event occurred during the COVID19 lockdown and created significant stress and disruption to residents. This paper focuses on the earthquake swarm itself as well as the damages observed in residential buildings, schools, and churches in the earthquake-stricken region. The earthquakes mainly impacted low-rise domestic masonry buildings, while the more modern reinforced concrete structures built following the recent seismic regulations were almost unaffected. The typology of buildings in the region, together with photographs demonstrating the extent of damage are presented herein. Despite the rather satisfactory performance of modern buildings in recent earthquakes in Greece, the preliminary investigations from the Thessaly Earthquakes showed that there is still a significant level of vulnerability in existing masonry building stock constructed using traditional methods and materials. Ground motion amplitude, frequency content, and duration are commonly identified as the main features of seismic waves affecting structural demand. Among these parameters, earthquake duration can have a substantial influence on assessment of structural seismic demand. The paper proposes a new empirical model for predicting the significant duration of ground-motion records in Turkey. Significant duration is an important parameter in determining the damage potential of earthquakes and is defined as the time interval between two specific values of Arias intensity. The proposed model is as function of moment magnitude ( M w ), Joyner-Boore distance ( R jb ), time-averaged shear-wave velocity in the top 30 m ( V S 30 ), and fault mechanism ( F m ). In the regression process, a database consisting of 850 records from 408 earthquakes in Turkey is used. According to the physics of the problem, mixed effect regression is employed. Next, besides residual analysis, comparison of the mean values with the other prediction models are performed. The influence of distanced uniform strip load on the design of cantilever sheet pile walls under static as well as seismic condition is sudied in this paper. A simplified theoretical solution based on limit equilibrium approach is proposed to design the cantilever sheet pile walls having a distanced strip load in cohesionless soil. By considering the rigid rotation about pivot point and the displacement pattern, the active and passive earth pressure are assumed fully mobilise. To completely define the earth pressure distribution, horizontal force and moment equilibrium are considered to calculate the embedded depth. The influence of distanced uniform strip load has been observed by emplying Coulomb earth pressure theory. Expressions are given to calculate bending moment and shear force at any depth of the cantilever sheet pile walls. Some aspects to design the cantilever sheet pile walls with distanced strip load are also highlighted in terms of maximum bending moment, embedded depth and depth of pivot point from dredge level. The Mw 7.8 earthquake that struck Kahramanmaras on February 6, 2023, caused significant damage to hydrocarbon and water transmission lines due to permanent ground deformations. Explosions occurred in the Kahramanmaras–Gaziantep Natural Gas transmission pipeline causing disruption of gas in the cities of Gaziantep and Hatay Fault Displacement Hazard. Water transmission pipelines were also damaged due to extreme fault offsets. This paper presents the findings from the earthquake affected zones. Particular attention was given to the performance of the 2600 mm diameter Duzbag–Gaziantep water transmission pipeline due to three reported challenges: (#1) The behavior of the pipe in the Duzbag tunnel, (#2) The pipe bend behavior at the fault crossing, and (#3) The pull-out of the pipe at valve room. Based on field observations, extreme damage forms at pipes were presented. A three-dimensional nonlinear numerical analysis was performed to simulate the observed damage of the reoriented water pipe at the fault crossing for Case #2. The nonlinear finite element model was able to capture the complex nature of the post-yield behavior of steel pipe as well as the damage locations along the pipe and their sequence of occurrences. As a mitigation measure for new pipes, the need for using flexible connections at critical crossings was highlighted. On the 26th of November 2019, an earthquake of moment magnitude 6.4 struck the northwest region of Albania as the result of thrust faulting near the convergent boundary of the Africa and Eurasia plates causing widespread damage to buildings in the city of Durrës and the surrounding areas. Based on the official data from the national authorities, the earthquake caused 51 casualties and 985 million-euro losses, corresponding to 7.5% of the 2018 gross domestic product. This paper summarises field observations made by the Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT) after the event. The paper presents an overview of the seismological aspects of the earthquake together with a brief overview of the damage, official loss statistics and the estimated macro- and socio-economic consequences of the event. In addition, it provides a summary of the observed damage to both recent and historical buildings as well as the description of several case studies to illustrate the characteristic damage patterns observed in the main structural typologies of the Albanian building stock. These observations try to identify possible links between the observed damage patterns and the deficiencies in construction practice and use of inappropriate retrofit techniques for historical assets. As many severe damages were observed on modern buildings, this also allows the identification of some gaps and possible areas of development of the current seismic design code. The January 24, 2020 Sivrice-Elazığ (Mw = 6.8) earthquake occurred on the East Anatolian Fault zone. Main shock of this earthquake was occurred 20:55 at local time. The Peak Ground Acceleration was equal to 0.3 g at the epicenter (Sivrice district) of the earthquake. Even though the main shock was moderate, its effects on the structures were rather serious. The main shock caused significant damage and resulted in 41 casualties. 1540 buildings were damaged moderately, while 8519 buildings were damaged heavily and collapsed. This main shock effected four cities surrounded the epicenter due to its shallow earthquakes. The purpose of this paper is to summarize past and present seismic characteristics of the earthquake region. In addition, the aim of this paper is to summarize the seismotectonic of the region, the general characteristics of the earthquake and more specifically to report on the structural damage, and structural damage caused by the earthquake, observed during the site investigation. The damages were classified for reinforced concrete structures, masonry dwellings and non-residential structures. All distinguished earthquake induced failures and damages were discussed. An investigation on seismic response characteristics and modal parameters of a cable-stayed bridge with movable bearings using vibration records obtained from a seismic monitoring system is presented in this paper. The object of this study is the Tokachi cable-stayed bridge, a single plane prestressed cable-stayed bridge that is equipped with moveable spherical frictional plate (SFP). The bridge seismic responses subjected to various levels of earthquake including the 2003 Tokachi Great earthquake were obtained from a permanent seismic monitoring system. The bridge dynamic characteristics that include frequency and damping were estimated by both the time-invariant and time-variant recursive subspace identification methods. The identification results reveal that damping ratios of the low order modes estimated during the largest earthquake can reach more than 10% of the critical damping, which is higher than what usually assumed in the seismic design code. Supplementary damping caused by friction force at the movable SFP bearings was identified as the main source of the large damping, and it was quantified by a modal-based inverse analysis using the sparse regularization method. Results of the analyses confirm the influence of moveable SFP bearings performance with its Coulomb-friction type stick–slip behavior on the dynamic characteristics of the bridge. The bearings remain stuck at smaller excitation causing higher stiffness of the structure and slip during a larger excitation resulting in stiffness reduction. The sliding process induces friction force between contacting surfaces of the SFP bearings which results in the increase of damping as the excitation level increases. The damping, however, does not increase continuously, but becomes steadier after a certain level of excitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a comprehensive geological and geotechnical study of the whole area affected by liquefaction following the 2012 Emilia earthquakes, including all the available information from the field reconnaissance surveys, in situ tests, and laboratory analyses. The compilation was performed at 120 liquefied sites to verify and validate the reliability of liquefaction charts in alluvial sediments, and to assess liquefaction induced by the 2012 seismic sequence in the Emilia plain. The results reveal a wide range of grain sizes (from clean sands to sandy silts) and compositional characteristics (quartz-rich to litharenitic) in the 2012 ejecta, and show a strong relationship between the liquefaction and stratigraphic architecture of the subsurface. The availability of in situ tests at the liquefied sites makes it possible to verify and validate the reliability of the liquefaction charts in alluvial sediments with respect to the real observations. For the analyzed Emilia case studies, the use of non-liquefiable crust provides better estimations of the liquefaction manifestations when coupled with the thickness of the liquefiable layer rather than with the liquefaction potential index. Confined masonry buildings are common structural systems in many seismic-prone regions of the world. According to the building code provisions, an appropriate continuous tie system should be provided in these buildings to bind the structural elements together and stop separation and disintegration of these elements under ground shaking. Since usually prescriptive design provisions with minimum calculations are used for constructing confined masonry buildings, investigating their performance in real seismic events is of great importance. In this paper observations made on the performance of confined masonry buildings during the destructive Sarpole Zahab, Iran, earthquake of November 12, 2017 are reported. The earthquake had caused different types of damage in both the structural and non-structural elements of the buildings. Damages were found to be primarily due to large structural irregularities and poor workmanship. Nonetheless, it was noted that those buildings with no significant irregularities, in the construction of which all the code's main provisions had been followed, survived the earthquake and did not experience partial or total collapse. It is suggested that in the taller, two or three storey buildings, with the aim of enhancing the lateral deformation capacity of the load bearing walls, some modifications on the dimensions and reinforcement detailing of the vertical tie elements, particularly those located at the corners of the buildings, to be carried out. In addition, as it has been repeatedly observed in the past earthquakes that after the partial or total collapse of the load bearing walls the tie-beams and tie-columns have served as a secondary gravity load-resisting system and prevented collapse of floor and roof slabs, it is suggested that the adequacy of the current prescriptive detailing of the tie system in acting as a temporary secondary load-bearing system to be verified. Over the past decade, several long duration subduction earthquakes took place in different locations around the world such as Indonesia in 2004, China in 2008, Chile in 2010, and Japan in 2011. Long-duration and large-magnitude earthquakes are also possible to occur in the Cascadia subduction zone along the Pacific Northwest Coast of the United States. In this paper, numerical investigation was conducted to investigate the influence of earthquake duration on the structural response of steel special concentric braced frames (SCBFs). Calibration and validation of numerical models were achieved using results from recently completed shake table tests at the University of Nevada, Reno of three identical 1/2-scale one-story one-bay SCBFs under unidirectional short and long duration earthquakes. The objective of this paper is two-fold: (1) to use the experimental results to assess the suitability of current low-cycle fatigue models when incorporated into numerical models; (2) to utilize the calibrated numerical model in large number of simulations to extend and generalize the experimental results to quantify the effect of earthquake duration on SCBFs. For the latter, two suites of short and long duration ground motions were utilized to conduct incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) for the calibrated numerical models of the tested frames. The IDA, and resulting fragility curves, concluded that longer duration earthquakes result in 45% lower median displacement capacity, which could be regarded as premature low-cycle fatigue induced-failure of braces.
