Olivomycin (DNA-binding antibiotic) in nanomolar concentrations induces apoptosis of human tumor cells and inhibits p53-dependent transcription of the reporter gene (basal and induced by antitumor drugs). Olivomycin aglycon induces no cytotoxicity and does not block transcription.

Forty-five patients with open and closed diaphyseal fractures of the shin are observed during a 10-day period after trauma. Serum contents of thyroxine, triiodothyronine, thyroxine-binding globulin, and cortisol are determined in radioimmune assay. Blood is taken fromv. femoralis of intact and fractured legs. Statistical mathematical models of changes in each parameter are obtained. A similarity between the groups is revealed, which is probably due to the identical direction of local processes leading to fracture consilidation. The regional changes in the studied parameters depend on the nature of damage.

Discharges of bulbar respiratory neurons and electrical activity of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles were studied and pO2, pCO2, pH, and the oxygen saturation of the arterial blood were determined in cats anesthetized with pentobarbital and exposed to the combined action of hypoxia and hypercapnia. During inhalation of a hypoxic gas mixture the developing hypocapnia disturbed the firing pattern of the respiratory neurons and respiration of the Cheyne-Stokes type was established. Addition of 2% CO2 to the hypoxic gas mixture restored the arterial blood gas composition to its initial level, prevented the development of hypocapnia, and prevented the disturbance of the rhythmic firing pattern of the respiratory neurons. Addition of 5% CO2 to the hypoxic gas mixture had a negative action: respiratory unit activity was first stimulated, then inhibited, metabolic and respiratory acidosis was induced, and asphyxia developed.

The effect of some preservative solutions on changes in permeability of tissue—blood barriers of isolated loops of small intestine was studied in laboratory albino rats during perfusion of their vessels with 0.85% sodium chloride solution, with Ringer-Locke, Hanks', and Collins-2 solutions, and with the Soviet preparations Gemodez and Aminopeptid. The volume of fluid flowing from the vessels, penetration of perfusion fluid into the lumen of the intestine, and its elimination through the serous membrane were determined. It was concluded that the least disturbance to the tissue—blood barriers of the small intestine is observed during perfusion of its vessels with Collins-2 solution. This method is recommended as a test for comparing the properties of presservative solutions.

Central denervation of the small intestine causes sharply defined and prolonged disturbances of its structure and function. Reinnervation reduces the severity of these disturbances and hastens the return to a normal state of the intestine.
