The chairs of Special Interest Group/Arts & Humanities and Special Interest Group/Visualization, Images and Sound have assembled articles that cover a range of research and projects reflecting the confluence of the two topics. Papers describe expanded access to resources in the humanities previously unavailable, leading to a digital renaissance. This access enables data mining and new insights for research and analysis, as well as enhanced possibilities for presenting results with interactive capabilities. Case studies explore information visualization technologies used to enrich a thesis presentation, cast literary analysis in a new light and reveal associations among scholars. The article examines the history of the information behavior research from 1959 to 2009. It states that there are two factors that dominates the information behavior in 1959 such as its relation to the link between funding for libraries and public support and the World War II for war machines improvement. It adds that information behavior was termed user studies in 1959 to 1979 from the 13 papers presented during the International Conference on Scientific Information that reveal how information was sought and used. It notes that the driver for change in the way people think about how to look for information is the existence of the technology itself that is reflected in the subjects of information behavior research in virtually all aspects.

A series of bibliometrics-based visualizations illustrate the contributions of five preeminent researchers in information science. With data drawn from the Web of Science, the views reflect a total of 1,993 publications by Christine Borgman, Blaise Cronin, Eugene Garfield, Katherine McCain and Howard White spread across seven time periods between 1955 and 2012. Contributions by the authors rose over time as they became active in the field and collaborated with others. The visualizations reveal the temporary nature of some coauthorship linkages while others were reinforced over time. Trends in the strength of author citations varied. The later time slices show the dynamic connections among the five authors studied, revealing the prominent and influential role played by Garfield and his collaborators through the years. The article provides the results of the scholarly communication survey of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) in the U.S. in 2007. It found out that the face of information and library science is changing. It appeared that on the average, the authors in the survey sample group published one to two papers a year. It revealed that 75.4 percent of the respondents indicated that they had good or excellent access to journal literature and 80.8 percent read the journal of the ASIS&T (JASIST). It also determined that 95.7 percent of them had at least some knowledge of open access journals.

A new and novel addition to core concepts of information science and technology is the Idea Collider, adapting the conceptual basis of the particle accelerator. The Idea Collider is presented as a theory of information and an information retrieval tool that deconstructs text to the underlying elements--the concepts, ideas, knowledge entities, taxons and knowledge bases - and then reconstitutes groupings of data. The authors champion the idea of a "multiverse of knowledge," in contrast to the "universe of knowledge" that is an important metaphor in traditional classification theory. A historical review of outstanding theoretical landmarks in classification theory explores the universe of knowledge metaphor, faceted classification theory and the universe of concepts, moving from a holistic view of existing knowledge to an elemental deconstruction that can account for all knowledge, past and future. The Idea Collider is proposed as a theoretical approach to identifying the essential parts of knowledge, dissociating those elements from culture- and time-bound dimensions and making them available for a bottom-up reassembly process. The article focuses on a progress report regarding an investigation of using events as a structuring device for mark-up and metadata structures in biographical texts. It describes a part of a series of studies of how learning can be facilitated through an easy way of finding resources. It explains the what, when, where, and who or "4W" approach for representing events and the granularity of these events, which are characterized by activity, time and location. It also discusses the collective biography and prosopography and terminology issues.

The article discusses the deterioration of tagging in Web development in the U.S. It states that tagging became popular in 2003 when the Web 2.0 phenomenon captured the attention of web designers, developers, information architects and entrepreneurs. However, in 2007, a number of people noticed that tagging seemed to be stuck and undeveloped. Moreover, the paper presented the blog that started the conversation about the deterioration of tagging, as well as the four trends that point toward tagging's future.

This article describes the aims and objectives of the Text REtrieval Conference (TREC) workshops and its impact in the areas of retrieval system effectiveness, retrieval system evaluation, and support of new retrieval tasks. The first TREC workshop was held in November 1992, and there has been a workshop held annually since then. The cumulative effort represented by the TREC is significant. Approximately 250 distinct groups representing more than 20 different countries have participated in at least one TREC, thousands of individual retrieval experiments have been performed and hundreds of papers have been published in the TREC proceedings. The TREC's impact on information retrieval research has been equally significant. A variety of large test collections have been built for both traditional ad hoc retrieval and new tasks such as cross-language retrieval, speech retrieval and question answering. The TREC has standardized the evaluation methodology used to assess the quality of retrieval results and, through the large repository of retrieval runs, demonstrated both the validity and efficacy of the methodology.

The article focuses on selected abstract of papers, published in the October 1, 2004 issue of the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. The paper "Evolution, Continuity and Disappearance of Documents on a Specific Topic on the Web--A Longitudinal Study of "Informetrics" by J. Bar-Ilan and B.C. Peritz, analyzes the changes that occurred to a set of Web pages related to "informetrics" over a period of five years between June 1998 and June 2003. The result of the paper "Using N-grams for Arabic text searching," by S.H. Mustafa and Q.A. Al-Radaideh indicates that the digram method offers a better overall performance than trigram, in respect to conflation precision and conflation recall ratios. The fact that Arabic is an agglutinative language with a complex affix structure involving prefixes, infixes and suffixes presents a special case for testing the general assumption of this paper. The paper "Open Knowledge Management: Lessons From the Open Source Revolution," by Y. Awazu and K.C. Desouza, argues that the future of knowledge work is manifested in how open-source communities work.

The article focuses on the basic functions of genre. As a stylized pattern of communication adopted within groups, it established the parameters of a communication process and participants to deliver and anticipate receiving certain types of information. Conforming to these expectations enables easier processing of the information flow and signal process through the communicative passage to participants, both temporally and semantically. It also influenced human information processing in a regular and repeatable manner.

The author reflects on the developments of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T). She stressed that the uniqueness and power of ASIS&T comes from the diversity of its members, working in many different environments and using many different titles. ASIS&T has reinforced its founding purpose by joining with other organizations to create a master schedule of worldwide conferences on information science, the International Calendar of Information Science Conferences. Since 1963 ASIS&T's own annual meeting has been a primary venue for sharing research in information science and technology. The 2011 meeting will focus on the use of information and communication to "bridge the gulf" between society, technology and work. In 2000 ASIS&T expanded its educational offerings with a focus on information architecture, initiating the popular IA Summit. The new RDAP Summit convened for the second year in 2011 to promote interoperability among institutional repositories. Through its Annual Meetings and Summits and by facilitating the international calendar of global conferences, ASIS&T continues to be a leader in promoting professional information exchange. The article presents the perspectives of some information professionals and the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) colleagues throughout the world. The awareness of how the information science research and practice affect, engage and benefit from information activities and environments on every continent is significant since the world becomes more globally interconnected. The ASIS&T Board of Directors approved the strategies to expand and integrate its global sensitivities and engagement. Recipients of the Society's awards hoped that readers will gain insight into the ways in which information problems are similar and unique.

The article presents information on the project of Global Information Village Plaza and SIG/III programs. The Global Information Village Plaza is an innovative and highly applauded program that was originally proposed and later run by Nadia Caidi and Michel Menou. The Global Plaza represents a welcome addition to the array of SIG/III programs, including the International Paper Contest, the InfoShare program and other technical sessions at the Annual Meetings, which all help put SIG/III in a better position to fulfill its goals. The success of the Global Plaza as well as that of other SIG/III programs is the result of the dedication of officers and members of the American Society for Information Science and Technology who work hard to make SIG/III meaningful and beneficial to so many people. Currently, SIG/III has about 150 active members from many countries, with diverse backgrounds in both academic and professional worlds.

The article focuses on the activities of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) and also invites readers' suggestions for the betterment of the Society. The author says that ASIS&T Board of Directors will be exploring means to increase and better structure communication between chapters and ASIS&T headquarters and among the chapters themselves. The article focuses on the working of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) and the author's last column to this journal as president of this society. According to the author ASIS&T is the very best of professional association. ASIS&T membership dues have not increased since 1998. Calculating a compounded 3% cost of living increase over six years showed the dues structure to be woefully lacking. The Board unanimously voted to move the Annual Meeting Proceedings to electronic format only, beginning at the 2005 meeting. Portable electronic formats of the proceedings will be distributed at the conference and will be available to registrants prior to the meeting. Students will now receive copies of the proceedings as part of the conference registration. The new job placement service from ASIS&T is up and running, powered by Job Target. The Board unanimously voted to cease publication of Jobline in paper format. The Board requested that a line item be added and maintained in the ASIS&T budget to support the maintenance of the Digital Library.

Two plenary sessions featuring big names in the digital world will highlight a conference program focusing on Managing and Enhancing Information: Cultures and Conflicts, at the 2004 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, from November 12-17, in Providence, Rhode Island. The first of the two plenary sessions is Sunday, November 14, when J.C. Hen, principal of Joystick Nation and a noted journalist and lecturer, will discuss the application of complex systems and game design to products, services and learning systems. The second plenary session at the 2004 Annual Meeting features keynoter Tim Berners-Lee, widely regarded as the inventor of the World Wide Web. Berners-Lee currently serves as director of the World Wide Web Consortium. While the two general sessions provide a great deal of sizzle and substance to the meeting, the real meat and potatoes is contained in the six dozen or so contributed paper and panel sessions covering virtually every aspect of information science. A review of the history and growth of ASIS&T since its origin as the American Documentation Institute (ADI) reflects the development of the concept of information science. Spearheaded by Watson Davis in 1937, the ADI focused on micro-photographic techniques and bibliography and on documentation principles and practices. Despite a shaky start and meager funding, the ADI adapted to new technologies, terminology and subject analysis methods, and started the journal American Documentation in 1950. Growth in science research in the '50s and '60s sparked an explosion of technical reports, prompting coordination with the Special Libraries Association and other groups and leading to a demand for more specialized professional skills, which was met in the '60s and '70s by expansion and focus on education in information science. The membership shifted to a majority in academia and shrinking minority in industry, and debate continued over the geographic scope and name of the organization, which added "and Technology" to its name in 2000. American Documentation transitioned in stages into the Journal of the American Society for Information and Technology, while the Bulletin and Annual Review were added, and annual conferences provided another educational resource. The publications became the basis of an arrangement with the publisherWiley that would stabilize finances. For millennia, information about biological diversity has been collected as a way to understand the living world. The information record has evolved from early papyrus to modern electronic collections, but challenges to information access persist, despite and partly due to a variety of digital techniques and applications. Information exchange is hampered by lack of access to previous work, inconsistent naming, changes over time and insufficient resources to create comprehensive databases supporting federated search with Darwin Core metadata. With progress in biodiversity informatics, we will see greater use of DNA barcoding and metagenomic techniques to describe species, remote sensing tools and geographic information systems to detect and describe species' locations and movements and to identify habitats and environmental conditions. Biodiversity informatics provides essential scientific knowledge to better understand global ecosystems and to inform land use and policy decisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A costly drain on productivity, information overload can stem from not only vast amounts of information but also a failure to filter information as presented. Information architects (IAs) are in a position to address the challenge, starting by distinguishing between macro information overload and micro information overload. At the macro level, physical storage limits and processing capacities present an obstacle to information access. Information overload at the micro level is a failure to filter information, interfering with a user's cognitive processing by presenting too many images, concepts, messages and other elements to sort through. If systems architects are skilled at recognizing signs of macro information overload, IAs should be able to identify signals of overload at the micro level, drawing on user experience design methods, and should develop ways to spot when information presented on a web page threatens to exceed a typical user's threshold for effective cognitive intake.
