A highlight of the 2012 ASIS&T Annual Meeting, the pre-conference session on the History of ASIS&T and Information Science and Technology Worldwide drew presenters and attendees from around the globe. The day featured papers on four historical themes, starting with the institutional roots of ASIS&T and recognizing decades of research presented in the Annual Review of Information Science and Technology. The chairs of Special Interest Group/Arts & Humanities and Special Interest Group/Visualization, Images and Sound have assembled articles that cover a range of research and projects reflecting the confluence of the two topics. Papers describe expanded access to resources in the humanities previously unavailable, leading to a digital renaissance. This access enables data mining and new insights for research and analysis, as well as enhanced possibilities for presenting results with interactive capabilities. The article examines the history of the information behavior research from 1959 to 2009. It states that there are two factors that dominates the information behavior in 1959 such as its relation to the link between funding for libraries and public support and the World War II for war machines improvement. It adds that information behavior was termed user studies in 1959 to 1979 from the 13 papers presented during the International Conference on Scientific Information that reveal how information was sought and used. This article describes the aims and objectives of the Text REtrieval Conference (TREC) workshops and its impact in the areas of retrieval system effectiveness, retrieval system evaluation, and support of new retrieval tasks. The first TREC workshop was held in November 1992, and there has been a workshop held annually since then. The cumulative effort represented by the TREC is significant. Approximately 250 distinct groups representing more than 20 different countries have participated in at least one TREC, thousands of individual retrieval experiments have been performed and hundreds of papers have been published in the TREC proceedings. The TREC's impact on information retrieval research has been equally significant. A variety of large test collections have been built for both traditional ad hoc retrieval and new tasks such as cross-language retrieval, speech retrieval and question answering. The TREC has standardized the evaluation methodology used to assess the quality of retrieval results and, through the large repository of retrieval runs, demonstrated both the validity and efficacy of the methodology.

The paper "Open Knowledge Management: Lessons From the Open Source Revolution," by Y. Awazu and K.C. Desouza, argues that the future of knowledge work is manifested in how open-source communities work.

A review of the history and growth of ASIS&T since its origin as the American Documentation Institute (ADI) reflects the development of the concept of information science. Spearheaded by Watson Davis in 1937, the ADI focused on micro-photographic techniques and bibliography and on documentation principles and practices. Despite a shaky start and meager funding, the ADI adapted to new technologies, terminology and subject analysis methods, and started the journal American Documentation in 1950. Growth in science research in the '50s and '60s sparked an explosion of technical reports, prompting coordination with the Special Libraries Association and other groups and leading to a demand for more specialized professional skills, which was met in the '60s and '70s by expansion and focus on education in information science. The membership shifted to a majority in academia and shrinking minority in industry, and debate continued over the geographic scope and name of the organization, which added "and Technology" to its name in 2000. American Documentation transitioned in stages into the Journal of the American Society for Information and Technology, while the Bulletin and Annual Review were added, and annual conferences provided another educational resource. The publications became the basis of an arrangement with the publisherWiley that would stabilize finances. The study of literature is changing in dramatic ways, stimulated by new opportunities that digital technology presents. Data visualization upends the dynamic for literary analysis, focusing not on questions stemming from a critic's personal viewpoint but on revealing and displaying connections between elements of the literary experience. The dominant association between critic and text is downplayed, replaced with associations within the text and between it and its context. The basis of interpretation shifts from reading to seeing, from qualitative analysis to quantitative. The reader's role is transformed, as well, from following the critic's path of thinking to actively exploring a network of multisensory and interdisciplinary information. The distinction between the authoritative presenter/critic and the learner/explorer is blurred. By inviting literary scholars to ask different questions for computational analysis, digital technology and visualization inspire innovative investigations and enable new insights. The article focuses on the major trends in the early years of information behavior (IB) research. It states that during and immediately after the World War II, the explosion of scientific and technical information which created a situation in which attention to information seeking was inevitable. It notes that in the 1980s, IB research occurred where the new generation of studies placed the information seeker or user in the center and did not presume the use of a particular resource or set of resources. It adds that in the 1990s, there are studies that examined IBs within the context of everyday life activities citing the work of Reijo Savolainen which notes that IB is included in the people's IBs at work, leisure and pursuing hobbies.

The results indicate that modification, disappearance and resurfacing cannot be ignored when studying the structure and development of the Web. The main contribution of this paper is that information science and technology practitioners interested in the construction of ontologies should take into consideration a perspective of the philosophy and history of science. In "Validation of a Model of Information Seeking Over Multiple Search Sessions," by S.L. Lin and N. Belkin, the study validated the sufficiency and accuracy of a conceptual model in characterizing successive searches over multiple search sessions.

Tennis, most recently both a student and teacher at the University of Washington, joined the faculty of the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia. Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web and currently director of the W3C, will deliver one of two keynote addresses at the 2004 American Society for Information Science & Technology Annual Meeting in Providence, Rhode Island on November 13-18, 2004. J.C. Hen, author of "Joystick Nation: How Video Games Ate Our Quarters, Won Our Hearts, and Rewired Our Minds" and "Surfing on the Internet" is also slated for a keynote address at the conference. Berners-Lee, the son of computer scientists, studied physics at Queen's College at Oxford University, graduating in 1976. By 1980, he was working as a software consultant at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva, where he created Enquire, a system to help him remember connections between various people and projects at the lab. In its early years, Enquire was expanded into a system that his colleagues could use to share information from one computer to the next without a central database. The article describes the basic requirements and functions for a metadata schema registry of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI). Metadata schema refers to both the semantic and syntactic features of metadata. The DCMI metadata schema registry provides authoritative reference descriptions of metadata schemas. The reference descriptions are internally encoded in Resource Description Framework (RDF) schemas and are presented in a user-friendly form the human users and in RDF schemas for machines. The application program interface is based on web services protocols, specifically both Representational State Transfer.

The article focuses on the challenges faced to information professionals in the South Asian Region. Many Indian and South Asian library professionals recognize the current realities as well as the necessity to adopt many of the strategies for their western colleagues to provide information services enabling their fellow citizens and countries, and be globally competitive. Survey shows that the libraries across the world are shifting their emphasis due to the advances in digital content and Web-based services, improving the tools for the development of digital libraries and repositories.
