Abstract This article discusses the writings of Fúlvia Rosemberg and her contribution to social and educational research. It analyzes in the author’s work the concepts of non- -synchrony of social hierarchies at the intersection of the hierarchies of race, gender, and age in educational policies and of whiteness, understood as the norm of humanity, which reveals the naturalized social norm at the center of the black-white hierarchy and the need to criticize it. Abstract This article presents part of the findings of an ethnographic study that analyzes the influence of gender on the indiscipline of 11- and 12-year-old children. We observed that, although boys exhibit disruptive behaviors more frequently, girls also transgress the rules of the pedagogical game, but they do so in a more discreet way and in accordance with the patterns incorporated into the structure of the school order. The results indicate that the notions of gender and the forms of masculinity and femininity guide the behavior of boys and girls, as well as interfere in the perception and, consequently, in the way in which teachers deal with indiscipline in the classroom - resulting in the continuation of binary gender divisions.

Abstract The present study addresses school dropout, a topic of interest at national and international levels. This construct responds to ways of understanding excellence within hierarchies (social, educational or cultural). We are interested in its analysis, based on an intersectional aspect in which gender certainly plays a key role. The analysis is based on qualitative research conducted using semi-structured interviews with 18 girls, aged 12 to 16 years, born in Cádiz (Spain), who dropped out of school. Nvivo11 was applied to the processing of the data. The young participants show that gender is significant: the responsibility for care, or stereotyped roles, among other elements, are the reasons for dropping out.

Abstract The article examines how male and female students were allocated to different groups of Brazilian higher education courses in 2002 and 2016. Microdata from the 2014 Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios [National Household Sample Survey] and the 2002 and 2016 Censo do Ensino Superior [Higher Education Census] were used. The results indicate that the number of female students that complete high school is disproportionately higher, and that it increased in the more recent born cohort. On the other hand, there are significant differences showing that women are over-represented in fields of study with lower returns in the labor market. The gender segregation pattern of educational choices is stable over time. However, it was observed that this is not due to a static behavior of gender segregation in the fields of study, but to the compensation of undergraduate courses that decrease and increase segregation.

Abstract Conducted in two lower secondary schools (for children aged approximately 11 to 14 years) in São Paulo and Salvador cities, this ethnographic study analyzes how adolescent girls negotiate gender identities in the relational frames of bullying. As a process of social control, bullying is based on difference games that lead to the learning of gender norms. Discussing bullying as gender violence shows how girls manipulate traditional female categorizations and attributes to promote social distinctions and power inequality between them. Power and status disputes not only contribute to the social ordering of the group by regulating sexuality and stereotyped behaviors of feminine delicacy and care, but also make it possible to claim egalitarian values and practices.

ABSTRACT This article, based on interviews with ninth semester engineering students (2014), deals with their academic experiences and conceptions of gender in the professional field. The dialectical and historical materialism, as a reference, aims to establish connections between the private and the social totality and between subjectivity and objectivity in the historical process of transformations and permanence. The increase in the number of admissions of women in engineering programs demands a continuous confrontation of female students who express empowerment strategies paradoxically accompanied by attributes supported by gender binarism. In turn, colleagues and teachers tend to reinforce the sexual division of work in new ways.
