Findings of the International Quality Study suggest that Canadian businesses need to focus on the specifics of implementing, planning and executing their quality improvement programs if these firms are to increase their global competitiveness. The study reveals a gap between Canadian firms' expectations for quality improvement and their resolve to implement quality-enhancing management practices. Many of Canada's companies fail to respond to customer needs, hesitate to automate, and are unwilling to raise operating costs even for improving quality or increasing customer satisfaction levels. It is also shown that only about half of Canadian businesses evaluate their quality improvements on a regular basis. In comparison, 70% of Japanese firms assess their progress at least once a month.
