1. Safety evaluation of centre line, edge line, and dual application rumble strips on Ontario two-lane rural roads

The study builds on previous rumble strip safety evaluations by providing some Canadian-specific experience and in the process offering some definitive insights into differences in safety effects between installations on curved and tangent segments. An empirical Bayes before-after study estimated crash modification factors (CMFs) for installing edge line rumble strips (ELRS) and centerline rumble strips (CLRS), separately and in combination, on two-lane rural roads in Ontario. Separate CMFs were estimated for ELRS and CLRS for curved and tangent segments. The estimated CMFs indicate that rumble strips can be beneficial, except for CLRS on curved segments, and especially if applied in combination on tangents. The results also indicate that edge line and dual rumble strips are more effective on curved segments, so priority should be given to their application on such segments. It is noteworthy that dual application is more safety effective than either CLRS or ELRS, for tangents and overall. Key words: rumble strips, safety evaluation, empirical Bayes, two-lane rural roads, highway design L'etude s'appuie sur des evaluations anterieures de la securite des bandes rugueuses en fournissant des resultats techniques propres au Canada et, dans le cadre du processus, en donnant un apercu definitif des differences des effets sur la securite entre les installations sur les segments courbes et tangents. Une etude empirique de Bayes avantapres a estime les facteurs de modification en cas d'accident (FMA) pour l'installation de bandes rugueuses en bordure (BRB) et de bandes rugueuses de ligne mediane (BRLM), separement et en combinaison, sur les routes rurales a deux voies en Ontario. Des FMA distincts ont ete estimes pour les BRB et les BRLM pour les segments courbes et tangents. Les FMA estimes indiquent que les bandes rugueuses peuvent etre benefiques, sauf pour les BRLM sur les segments courbes, et surtout si elles sont appliquees en combinaison sur les tangentes. Les resultats indiquent egalement que la ligne de bordure et les bandes rugueuses doubles sont plus efficaces sur les segments courbes, de sorte que la priorite devrait etre accordee a leur application sur ces segments. Il est a noter que la double application est plus efficace en matiere de securite que les BRLM ou les BRB, pour les tangentes et dans l'ensemble.
