This section presents a bibliography of books on Canadian sociology.

The article presents a comment on a previous article that appeared in a previous issue of the Canadian Journal of Sociology. According to the author, the central points of his article were: (a) that an extensive body of ignored research had shown that the methodologies adopted by the original Vertical Mosaic school of thought on elites probably exaggerated the exclusivity of Canadian elites to a considerable degree; (b) that the finding of elite membership that was unrepresentative of the social composition of the population did not indicate a shocking anomaly that demanded immediate remedy. This pattern is referred to in the international literature as the law of increasing disproportion; (c) that, in any case, research conducted using other methodologies, and research conducted since the original publication of The Vertical Mosaic, indicates that the Canadian pattern is in transition. Sociologist Harvey Rich argues that the measures of middle class used in the Vertical Mosaic tradition, and uncritically adopted in author's paper, are far too narrow and would apply to what most would designate as the upper middle class. Consequently, Rich argues that author's guesstimate about the possible proportion of those of working-class origins in the elites was too high. Rich is correct. It is also correct to suggest that author's paper sometimes confused sociologist Wallace Clement's position with sociologist John Porter's position and that its discussion suffered accordingly.

The article presents comments of the author on the article "Continuity and Change in Canada's Unemployment-Immigration Linkage," by John W.P. Veugelers and Thomas R. Klassen. Veugelers and Klassen's paper makes an important contribution by confirming in detail three findings on Canadian immigration policy that have been noted only more casually and less clearly in previous studies. In this commentary on their paper, I seek to clarify the significance of their findings and to set forth some important issues and hypotheses which are not covered in their interpretation. One major finding in the Veugelers and Klassen paper concerns the role of unemployment trends in the "tap-on tap-off' pattern of Canadian immigration levels over the post-War period up until 1990. The paper presents the most careful analysis to date of the way in which annual immigration targets have tended to rise in periods of falling unemployment and to drop in periods of increasing unemployment. A second major finding clearly documents and confirms the way actual immigration levels tend to closely follow state immigration targets. As the authors note, the preceding two findings are consistent with the hypothesis that, over the period 1946-1989, Canadian immigration targets and actual arrivals were determined annually by Federal policy makers who relied significantly on unemployment trends as a barometer of emerging pressure and criticism they faced from capital and labor.

The article is a comment on John Hagan's reply to the author's paper about Hagan's theory of Canadian-American difference in homicide rates. According to the author, Hagan seems to have fundamentally misconstrued his argument. Hagan's misunderstanding begins with the title of his reply: he focuses on crime and criminalization in general, while the author focuses on the rate of homicide. This difference is important because Hagan proposes different types of explanations for different types of crime. Indeed, The Disreputable Pleasures is organized around that distinction. Oddly, in his critique of the author's paper Hagan blurs the distinction he has himself established by claiming that he has offered a theory of Canadian-American differences in homicide rates that fuses structural and cultural themes. However, reviewing Hagan's work on Canadian-American differences in crime rates in general and in homicide rates in particular, the author fails to discover the structural component. Instead, Hagan attributes Canadian-American differences to dissimilarities in the way values were forged out of unique historical experiences on the respective frontiers of the two countries.

The article presents a comment on the article "Differential Effects of University and Community College Education on Occupational Status Attainment in Ontario," by Paul Anisef, Fredrick D. Ashbury, and Anton H. Turrittin that appeared in the January 1992 issue of the "Canadian Journal of Sociology." According to Anisef, Ashbury, and Turrittin (hereafter AAT) argue that the schools where people go do matter. They show that university graduates do better than college graduates in attaining high status jobs. That is hardly surprising. The journal "Statistics Canada," annually publishes tables showing the different incomes of women and men who have attained various educational levels. What makes AAT's paper important is their attempt to explain how education links to paid work. They first suggest that others have erred by concentrating on years of schooling rather than on type of schooling. They then show that type of schooling makes a difference to a person's occupational attainment, net of factors like social origin, expectations, first job, and sex. Finally they argue that their central finding can be understood to result from credentialing processes.

This paper examines the ways in which both fish farmers and environmentalists use frames to socially construct the salmon farming industry in British Columbia. Advertisements and other promotional materials contain movement actors' justifications for promoting or opposing the industry; these rationalizations are good reasons for understanding fish farming in a particular way. Because salmon environmentalists must both rely on what people already know, they create frames that direct the viewers's gaze of salmon aquaculture in surprisingly similar ways. It was found that frames created by both proponents and opponents of the industry are structured around the inter-related concepts of production, efficiency, and technology. As a result, farmed fish become natural-social hybrids. Farmed salmons are framed in both common-sensical and hyper-real ways as naturally efficient bits of living technology. This paper suggests that an awareness of the performance aspects of environmental farming allow people to live more astutely in a world of burgeoning controversy over natural resource issues.

In a recent CJS special issue developed around their paper titled “The Institutionalization of Symbolic Interactionism in Canadian Sociology, 1922-1979: Success at What Cost?” Helmes-Hayes and Milne (2017) document the emergence and establishment of symbolic interactionism (SI) in English-language Canadian sociology, and then consider its fragmentation and decline from 1979 into the present period. This is followed by commentaries from Jacqueline Low (2017), who gives a more optimistic impression of the present state of SI in Canada, and Neil McLaughlin (2017), who considers its sectarian nature as a social and intellectual movement. This is a worthy discussion in the history of Canadian sociology and the sociology of ideas. Certainly Canadian SI is an important part of our wider national sociology tradition, and it is important that we recognize its past, present, and future institutional development in light of as much evidence as possible. This paper examines the role of Christian conversion on the early adjustment experience of Hmong refugee women in Ontario, Canada. This transition from a traditionally animist and preliterate past did not result in the wholesale abandonment of Hmong practices and beliefs, but rather a dynamic relationship of custom and innovation. Women in particular tuned to the Hmong Christian Church (Mennonite) as a resource for empowerment (for example, through the establishment of women-centred networks) but also to maintain key Hmong social practices and values. As this paper demonstrates, the church proved to be a valuable resource in helping these refugee women to cope more effectively with the constraints of gender and minority status. In his article "The Construction of Satanism As a Social Problem in Canada" (1990), Randy Lippert has made some inaccurate comments about the author's character and his motives. Based on a few newspaper interviews and one brief telephone call, he concludes that the author "might be better understood" as a "moral entrepreneur" who "acts with an absolute ethic." Other accusations about the author's character and beliefs are stated or implied throughout the article. The paper's main concerns center on the obvious fact that some religious or psycho- spiritual therapy movements are manipulative, abusive, and harmful toward their followers or society at large. Certain elements are identified of such problematic movements to educate members of the public so that they can determine for themselves whether or not a specific group deserves their involvement or support. There is an attempt to understand terms such as "brainwashing." Since this area of psychological inquiry is relatively new, definitional confusions abound. The authors have settled on the term "psychological assault," which is defined as "a process by which an individual or group uses known techniques to systematically assault, break down, and replace a targeted individual's core identity and beliefs for purposes of dominance and control."

The article comments on a paper "Gender Differences in Earnings: A Re-analysis and Prognosis for Canadian Women," by Catherine Fillmore. It is a mixture of useful descriptive information on earnings in Canada for 1931-1981. Fillmore draws three conclusions from her tables of descriptive statistics. The ratio of female to male earnings rises as the proportion of workers in an occupation who are female rises; average occupation-specific earnings for both women and men rise as the proportion of workers in an occupation; and the ratio of female to male earnings has been rising over time. The problem of concern in Fillmore's paper is long-standing gender differences in earnings. Fillmore explores three bodies of economic theory in seeking to understand this problem: human capital theory, dual labour market theory, and reserve army theory. She claims that human capital theory implies that women will be drawn to particular occupations by rising wage rates and hence that there will be a positive correlation between occupational earnings and female composition.

This initial paper, from a planned series, presents an introductory survey of interspousal violence from 562 Calgary couples. Assumptions from conflict and exchange theories guide the analyses which focus on selected structural and interactional factors. Questionnaires and interviews from both partners provide the responses for both single-item indicators and scales, built through factor analysis, which are analyzed using simple percentages and Pearson's zero order coefficients. Three types of violence, husband-to-wife, wife-to-husband, and mutual, are investigated and found to be pervasive. All occur in every SES, educational, and income level. Although age, marital status, length of marriage, and number of children are associated with interspousal violence, the strongest relationships are classified as interactional. These include aggression, marital conflict, and work strain. Although violence is negatively correlated with marital satisfaction, significantly large proportions of highly satisfied couples report conjugal violence. Such evidence lends support to the dialectic notion that love and affection exist simultaneously with conflict and violence.

This paper analyzes the use of left/right reasons for identifying with the major federal and provincial political parties by respondents in the 1984 Canadian National Election Study (CNES). Only a minority of Canadians invoked such explanations and left-wing reasons greatly exceeded right-wing reasons. New Democrats were much more likely to offer leftist reasons, as expected, and this tendency varied directly with the intensity of their support for the NDP. The same pattern held for federal Progressive Conservatives tendency to give right-wing reasons. There was no such relationship for Liberal partisans whose use of left-wing and right-wing justifications placed them between New Democrats and Conservatives. The paper also tested hypotheses on the contributions of union membership, region, socio-economic status, and education to leftist thinking. The paper concludes with some speculation about the political and ideological significance of the NDPs elevated popularity in the public opinion polls in 1987.
