Linear developments such as roads, seismic lines, and pipeline rights-of-way are common anthropogenic features in the boreal forest of Alberta. These features may act as barriers to the movement of threatened woodland caribou, Rangifer tarandus caribou. Seismic lines were not barriers to caribou movements, whereas roads with moderate vehicle traffic acted as semipermeable barriers to caribou movements. Twenty-two adult female and 1 adult male woodland caribou were captured and collared on February 17–19, 1998. Each caribou was fitted with a global positioning system collar. The greatest barrier effects were evident during late winter, when caribou crossed actual roads 6 times less frequently than simulated road networks. Semipermeable barrier effects may exacerbate functional habitat loss demonstrated through avoidance behavior. Caribou may cross roads less frequently than expected for a number of reasons, including an aversion to the physical barrier presented by a road and associated forest opening, vehicle traffic, or predation by humans. The effects of habitat fragmentation through habitat loss, avoidance, and the semipermeable barrier effects of roads should be considered in developing strategies to maintain woodland caribou populations in Alberta. Roads that act as semipermeable barriers to caribou movements may make the presence of caribou more predictable in space and time, and hence compromise the "spacing out" strategy that caribou adopt to reduce predation. The approach we have outlined in this paper is a useful method to quantify the effects of human developments acting as semipermeable barriers to animal movements and should be considered in the development of animal-movement models.

Managing predators to restore threatened or endangered species is often controversial. Hervieux et al. (2014; Can. J. Zool. 92(12): 1029-1037) report on the efficacy of wolf ( Canis lupus L., 1758) reduction as a recovery strategy in the Little Smoky population of boreal woodland caribou ( Rangifer tarandus caribou (Gmelin, 1788)) range in Alberta, which generated a lot of media attention. As such, the authors were invited by the journal editor who handled the original paper to write this addendum to provide clarification regarding the methodology used in the original paper. Wolf reduction was conducted by Government personnel in accordance with appropriate policy and laws (i.e., federal and provincial Species at Risk Acts; Alberta Wildlife Act; Alberta Woodland Caribou Policy). University-based researchers were involved only in data analysis and writing, and thus did not require approval by a university-based animal welfare board. Collaboration between independent university-based scientists and government biologists is essential to effective assessment of such controversial management practices. Hervieux et al. (2014; Can. J. Zool. 92(12): 1029-1037) in fact concluded that such wolf reductions, by themselves, would only 'buy time' and would not restore woodland caribou alone without effective habitat protection. While the location of wildlife mortalities provides some insight on the cause of death, identifying the risk factors associated with mortality events and in which cases these factors result in death requires information on individual behaviour prior to death. With access to a long-term database of grizzly bear (Ursus arctos L., 1758) GPS locations, we investigated how behaviour differed between individuals that died of anthropogenic causes and those that survived across different temporal scales. We analyzed movement (diurnality and daily displacement) and habitat use (modelled risk and habitat quality) of grizzly bears residing in Alberta, Canada, from 2005 to 2021 to determine whether grizzly bears that died and grizzly bears that survived differed in these behaviours 2–4 years, 1 year, and 1 week prior to death, and whether patterns changed over time. We found that diurnality increased in the last year of life, while displacement increased in the last week of life, with differences becoming greater nearer the day of death. Grizzly bears that died used high-risk and low-quality habitat at all time scales, and these behaviours increased as death approached. Our analysis suggests that grizzly bear mortalities do not occur randomly but happen at times when individuals exhibit high-risk behaviours. We studied the response of males to the singing of nearby male conspecifics in two species of the orthopteran genus, Cyphoderris, primitive relatives of crickets and katydids in Alberta. Lone male Cyphoderris buckelli stridulating in a large cage made a phonotactic approach to a nearby speaker broadcasting conspecific calling song. But in field experiments no phonotaxis to song broadcasts occurred. Calling male Cyphoderris monstrosa were exposed in the field to playback of a synthetic calling song at a typical conspecific pulse rate, relayed broadcast of their own call, and low-frequency audio noise. We tested whether a C. buckelli field singer would alter his calling song in response to the singing of a nearby male conspecific. The pulse rate of C. monstrosa varies linearly with temperature. There was no significant change in duty cycle for males exposed to synthetic song or to rebroadcast of their own song, whereas males reduced their acoustic output in the presence of noise. Male C. monstrosa responded to the song of a conspecific male broadcast nearby with only a non-significant increase in chirp duty cycle. The marking and recapture studies of C. buckelli reveal an almost complete absence of site fidelity in this species. Most males move to different singing locations on successive nights in a fashion consistent with choosing random bearings and traveling random distances
