2. Age-Specific Cancer Mortality in the US During the COVID-19 Pandemic, March to December 2020.

Abstract

Background: It is important to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer death rates in 2020 in the US. We estimated whether there were larger-than-expected changes in cancer mortality rates from March to December 2020 after accounting for temporal and seasonal patterns using data from January 2011 to February 2020 by cancer type and age. Methods: We obtained death counts and underlying causes of death by cancer type, month/year (2011-2020), and age group from the National Center for Health Statistics and population estimates from the US Census Bureau. Poisson regression was used to test for significant changes in cancer death rates from March to December 2020 compared with prior years. Results: After accounting for temporal trends and seasonal patterns, total cancer death rates were significantly lower than expected during March to December 2020 among 55- to 64-year-olds and =75-year-olds, but not in other age groups. Cancer death rates were 2% lower than expected from March to June among 55- to 64-year-olds and 2% to 3% lower from March to July and December among =75-year-olds. Among =75-year-olds, colorectal cancer death rates were lower from March to June [rate ratios (RR) = 0.94-0.96; P < 0.05]; however, lung cancer death rates were 5% lower across each month (all RRs = 0.95; P < 0.05). Conclusions: In the US, cancer death rates based on the underlying cause of death were broadly similar to expected rates from March to December 2020. However, cancer death rates were lower than expected among 55- to 64-year-olds and =75-year-olds, likely due to COVID-19 as a competing cause of death. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. Independent and Joint Associations between Serum Calcium, 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D, and the Risk of Primary Liver Cancer: A Prospective Nested Case-Control Study.

Abstract

Background: Accumulating evidence has shown that serum calcium and vitamin D may be associated with or influence various cancer risks. However, no prospective studies have evaluated the independent and joint associations between prediagnostic levels of serum calcium and vitamin D and future risk of incident primary liver cancer. Methods: We used a nested case-control design to evaluate subjects over 22 years of follow-up. Serum calcium, 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D], and three markers of hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus were measured in baseline serum from 226 incident primary liver cancer cases and 1,061 matched controls. We calculated ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CI) using logistic regression to estimate the associations between calcium, 25(OH)D, and primary liver cancer risk. Results: Multivariable adjusted models showed that subjects with both low (ORLow/Medium = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.01-2.17) or high (ORHigh/Medium = 1.92, 95% CI = 1.34-2.76) calcium had an increased primary liver cancer risk, while those with high 25(OH)D had a decreased risk of primary liver cancer (ORHigh/Medium = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.35-0.82). In joint analyses, when compared with subjects with medium calcium and 25(OH)D, subjects with high calcium and medium 25(OH)D had elevated odds of developing primary liver cancer (OR = 1.89, 95% CI = 1.17-3.05); those with medium calcium and high 25(OH)D had reduced odds of developing primary liver cancer (OR = 0.34, 95% CI = 0.17-0.67); and subjects in other classifications of calcium and serum 25(OH)D levels had no change in the odds of developing primary liver cancer (all P > 0.05). Conclusions: In a nutrient-deficient population, we found that serum calcium and serum 25(OH)D could potentially be modifiable risk or protective factors. 19. Association of 25-Hydroxyvitamin D with Liver Cancer Incidence and Chronic Liver Disease Mortality in Finnish Male Smokers of the ATBC Study.

Abstract

Background: Although circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations were linked to liver cancer and chronic liver disease (CLD) in laboratory studies, few epidemiologic studies have addressed the associations. Methods: Within the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Study, we measured 25(OH)D in baseline serum of 202 incident liver cancer cases and 225 CLD deaths that occurred during nearly 25 years of follow-up, and 427 controls. ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using unconditional logistic regression. We examined predetermined clinically defined cut-points, and season-specific and season-standardized quartiles. Results: Low serum 25(OH)D concentrations were associated with higher risk of liver cancer (<25 nmol/L vs. =50 nmol/L: 1.98; 95% CI, 1.22-3.20; Ptrend across categories = 0.003) and CLD mortality (1.93; 95% CI, 1.23-3.03; Ptrend = 0.006) in models adjusted for age and date of blood draw. After additional adjustment for body mass index, diabetes, smoking, and other potential confounders, the association remained statistically significant for liver cancer (1.91; 95% CI, 1.16-3.15; Ptrend = 0.008), but was somewhat attenuated for CLD mortality (1.67; 95% CI, 1.02-2.75; Ptrend = 0.05). Associations were similar for analyses using season-specific and season-standardized quartiles, and after excluding participants with diabetes, or hepatitis B or C. Conclusions: Our results suggest a possible preventive role for vitamin D against liver cancer and CLD, although the importance of the liver for vitamin D metabolism and the lack of information about underlying liver disease makes reverse causality a concern. Impact: Future studies are needed to evaluate associations of vitamin D with liver cancer and liver disease in other populations, particularly those with a different constellation of risk factors. 20. Prospective Study of Coffee Consumption and Cancer Incidence in Non-White Populations.

Abstract

Background: Coffee intake has been associated with risk of various cancers, but the findings, mostly from studies in white populations, are inconsistent. We examined the association of coffee consumption with overall cancer incidence and specific cancer sites in a large prospective study of African Americans, Native Hawaiians, Japanese Americans, Latinos, and whites. Methods: 167,720 participants of the Multiethnic Cohort Study in Hawaii and Los Angeles were included. Baseline coffee intake was assessed by a validated food-frequency questionnaire. HRs and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for sixteen cancers associated with coffee intake were calculated using Cox regressions. Results: During a mean follow-up of 15.3 years, 34,031 incident cancer cases were identified among study participants. Coffee intake was associated inversely with liver (=4 cups/day vs. none: HR = 0.57; 95% CI, 0.38-0.87; Ptrend < 0.001), ovarian (HR = 0.33; 95% CI, 0.17-0.65; Ptrend = 0.007), and thyroid (HR = 0.44; 95% CI, 0.23-0.87; Ptrend = 0.007) cancers and melanoma (HR = 0.72; 95% CI, 0.52-0.99; Ptrend = 0.002). Coffee intake was also inversely associated with endometrial cancer among women with a body mass index >30 kg/m2 (HR = 0.31; 95% CI, 0.14-0.72; Ptrend = 0.04). The associations were similar across five ethnic groups (Pheterogeneity > 0.06) and were mainly observed among those who drank caffeinated coffee. Conclusions: On the basis of our prospective data in diverse populations, we found a decreased risk of liver, ovarian, thyroid, and endometrial cancers and melanoma associated with higher coffee intake. Abstract

Background: Although some familial cancer syndromes include biliary tract cancers (BTCs; cancers of the gallbladder, intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts, and ampulla of Vater), the few studies that have examined the relationships between family history of cancer (FHC) and BTCs have reported inconclusive findings. The objective of this study was to investigate the associations of FHC with risk of BTC in the Biliary Tract Cancers Pooling Project (BiTCaPP). Methods: We used Cox proportional hazards regressions models to estimate HRs and 95% confidence intervals for associations between FHC (any, first-degree, in female relative, in male relative, relative with gastrointestinal cancer, and relative with hormonally related cancer) and BTC risk by anatomic site within the biliary tract, adjusting for sex and race/ethnicity. Sensitivity analyses were conducted that restricted to studies reporting cholecystectomy data and to people without a history of cholecystectomy. Results: Data on FHC were available from 12 prospective studies within BiTCaPP, which collectively contributed 2,246 cases (729 gallbladder, 345 intrahepatic and 615 extrahepatic bile duct, and 385 ampulla of Vater cancers) with 21,706,107 person-years of follow-up. A marginal, inverse association between FHC and gallbladder cancer was driven to the null when analysis was restricted to studies reporting cholecystectomy data and to people without a history of cholecystectomy. FHC was not associated with risk of BTC at the other anatomic sites. Conclusions: These findings do not support an association between FHC and BTCs. The article presents a study on the presence of alcohol and acetaldehyde (ACH) in the African fermented milk mursik and its correlation to the high incidence rate of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in the Kalenjin tribe in western Kenya. It discusses the fermentation process for mursik which uses calabash gourds, Ite branch and vein blood from a bull. Microbiota found in the mursik are mainly lactobacilli and yeasts, both of which are said to bring higher ACH and ethanol levels.

Abstract

The article investigates the relationship between obesity-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) and thyroid cancer risk. Logistic regression models were used in calculating odd ratios and 95 percent confidence intervals with SNP genotypes. The fat mass and obesity associated gene region was the location of nine of the top-ranking SNP. The role of obesity-related genetic polymorphisms is suggested to be not supported in the data.

38. Prospective Study of Self-Reported Diabetes and Risk of Upper Gastrointestinal Cancers.

Abstract

The article discusses a study which investigated the association between diabetes and upper gastrointestinal (UGI) cancers in a population of 50 to 71-year olds in the U.S. Cox proportional hazards regression was utilized in estimating cancer incidence for diabetes and UGI cancers. Results showed no association of self-reported diabetes with risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma. The study also found significant association between diabetes and risk of gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA).
