Background: Electronic patient-reported outcome measures (ePROMs) benefit adult cancer care, but their use in pediatric cancer care is limited., Objectives: To explore the feasibility of collecting weekly ePROMs from pediatric cancer patients and/or their caregivers and to describe children's levels of symptom burden, distress, and cancer-related quality of life., Methods: A prospective and longitudinal cohort study was undertaken at one tertiary children's cancer center. Children (2-18 years)/caregivers completed ePROMs with validated measures for distress, symptom burden, and cancer-related quality of life weekly for 8 weeks., Results: Seventy children/caregivers participated in the study, and 69% completed ePROMs at all 8 weeks. Distress and cancer-related quality of life significantly improved over time. However, at week 8, almost half of the participants still reported high levels of distress. Symptom burden decreased over time, with the youngest and the oldest age groups (2-3 and 13-18 years) reporting the highest number of symptoms with severe burden., Conclusions: Weekly collection of ePROMs in pediatric cancer care is feasible. Although distress, quality of life, and symptom burden improve over time, there is a need for timely assessment and interventions to improve symptoms, high levels of distress, and issues that negatively affect quality of life., Implications for Practice: Nurses are ideally placed to intervene, assess, and monitor symptoms and to provide symptom management advice to pediatric cancer patients and caregivers. Background: Despite tremendous progress in understanding the unmet needs of cancer survivors, our understanding of oncology nurses' perspectives and practices in the delivery of survivorship care is inadequate., Objectives: The aims of this study were to assess oncology nurses' perceptions about their responsibility and frequency of delivery of survivorship care to cancer patients and to examine the factors influencing such care., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered to 81 nurses working in the oncology unit of hospitals in Hong Kong. Participants completed an investigator-developed questionnaire designed to assess oncology nurses' perceptions of responsibility, practices, and barriers regarding the provision of survivorship care for cancer patients., Results: Results revealed discrepancies between oncology nurses' perceptions of responsibility and practices, with high levels of perceptions of various survivorship care as their responsibility but low levels in delivery of such care. Despite that discussing and managing pain was agreed by most oncology nurses as their responsibility (95.1%), 34.6% of them have never managed survivors' pain. Besides, 33.3% of nurses have never discussed and managed survivors' sexuality issues. Lack of time (79.0%), inadequate educational resources for family members (59.3%), and lack of knowledge and skills (54.4%) were major factors that impeded survivorship care provision., Conclusions: This study provides further evidence for inadequacies of oncology nurses in delivering survivorship care and their perceived barriers. A large body of research now exists suggesting that families are dramatically affected by a diagnosis of cancer, and that they have a wide range of support needs. In particular, evidence suggests that the emotional strains of living with a family member who has cancer are an especially difficult coping challenge, and that such strains have a significant impact on the day-to-day lives of family members. Despite this evidence, there has been little analysis to date on the nature of the families' experience with cancer and what implications the unique features of family relationships and interactions in the context of cancer have for nursing practice. Some of these specific features of the families' experience with cancer are examined in this article. It is suggested that enormous scope exists for improving nurses' contribution to care for families of people with cancer. Specific recommendations for achieving such improvements include a critical review of the constraints that exist on efforts to care for families, and the development of approaches to care that appreciate the interconnectedness of family responses and the considerable needs of family members for emotional and practical support.
