A hybrid ultra-light and porous cellulose aerogel was prepared by extracting cellulose fibers from white paper, alkali/urea as a crosslinker agent, and functionalized with CNTs and pure anatase TiO 2 nanoparticles. Since CNTs work as mechanical reinforcement for aerogels, physical and mechanical properties were measured. Besides, since TiO 2 acts as a photocatalyst for degrading dyes (rhodamine B and methylene blue), UV-Vis spectroscopy under UV light, visible light, and darkroom was used to evaluate the degradation process. XRD, FTIR, and TGA were employed to characterize the structural and thermal properties of the composite. The nanostructured solid network of aerogels was visualized in SEM microscopy confirming the structural uniformity of cellulose and TiO 2 -CNTs onto fibers. Moreover, CLSM was used to study the nano-porous network distribution of cellulose fibers and porosity, and the functionalization process in a detailed way. Finally, the photocatalytic activity of aerogels was evaluated by degradation of dye aqueous solutions, with the best photocatalytic removal (>97 %) occurring after 110 min of UV irradiation. In addition, HPLC-MS facilitated the proposed mechanism for the degradation of dyes. The aim of this study was to obtain cellulose and cellulose nanoparticles (CNP) from garlic and agave wastes, as well as elucidating its structure at different scales using microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. Cellulose is isolated by using a sequential extractive process and monitored by CLSM and SEM, while CNP are produced in a high-energy planetary mill. FTIR and XRD confirmed the presence of cellulose type I and CI and D hkl was used to evaluate the size of CNP. The corresponding crystalline structure, d-spacing and angles obtained from crystalline regions of CNP were estimated by TEM and computational simulation. It is shown that the triclinic phase is predominant in G, and a monoclinic conformation in CNP for A. The novelty of this contribution is to demonstrate that the crystalline structure of CNP, extracted from different agro-food wastes, depends on its initial microstructural arrangement (laminar or fibrillar)., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Mango is an important crop worldwide, with a postharvest loss that is huge due to its climacteric behaviour. This study evaluated the softening of Tommy Atkins mangos during the ripening process. Ripening index (RPI) shown a decrease from 9.18 ± 0.14 to 4.75 ± 0.47. The enzymatic activity agreed with physicochemical parameters and with the structural and mechanical changes. Three pectin fractions were isolated from the mango cell wall: water soluble (WSP), chelator soluble (CSP) and diluted alkali soluble (DASP) pectin. The Younǵs modulus (E) of the primary cell wall was evaluated, it decreased from 1.69 ± 1.02 to 0.39 ± 0.16 MPa, which could be attributed to the softening of the fruit. A linear fit correlation between E and RPI was found. X-ray and confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis showed the changes occurred in the mango cell wall structure during maturation. The aim of this work is to characterize the microstructure of chitosan and alginate edible films by microscopy techniques and texture image analysis. Edible films were obtained by solution casting and solvent evaporation. The microscopy techniques used in this work were: light, environmental scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. Textural features and fractal dimension were extracted from the images. Entropy and fractal dimension were more useful to evaluate the complexity and roughness of films. The highest values of entropy and fractal dimension corresponded to alginate/chitosan, followed of alginate and chitosan films. An entropy/fractal dimension ratio, proposed here, was useful to characterize the degree of image complexity and roughness of edible films at different magnifications. It was possible to postulate that microscopy techniques combined with texture image analysis are efficient tools to quantitatively evaluate the surface morphology of edible films made of chitosan and alginate., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.
