Road accidents are among the main leading causes of premature death in Latin America and the Caribbean for the population between 5 and 29 years old, and cause more than 5 million injuries every year. Fatalities are distributed equally between urban and interurban areas, and half of the deceases are vulnerable users (pedestrians, bicycle and motorcycle riders). The social impact, in terms of years of life lost, is equivalent to the impact produced by HIV/AIDS, lung cancer, tuberculosis and malaria, all together. In 2010, the Inter-American Development Bank developed its road safety strategy, and since then, has been implementing actions at the global, regional and national levels, towards the improvement of institutional management, infrastructure, vehicles and users' behavior.
