In order to fill the research gap of high metal loading of high performance PtNi alloy catalysts, a PtNi/C alloy nano-catalyst with metal loading more than 50 wt.% and core-shell like structure was prepared by ethylene glycol reduction, high temperature annealing, and acid pickling. The electrochemical test results showed that the prepared PtNi alloy catalyst had excellent electrochemical activity: the electrochemical surface area (ECSA) was 63.8 m2·gPt−1, and the mass activity (MA) was 0.574 A·mgPt−1, which is 2.73 times greater than those of the Pt/C JM (Johnson Matthey) catalyst. The durability of the PtNi/C catalyst was further investigated. After 30 K cycles of accelerated durability test, the ECSA and MA of the PtNi/C alloy catalyst decreased by 10.2% and 31.2%, respectively. The PtNi/C alloy catalyst prepared in this study has excellent catalytic activity and overcomes the problem of insufficient durability of traditional alloy catalysts and has the potential for large-scale commercial application. Higher alcohols like 1-butanol are considered important biofuels with superior properties compared to the more readily available bio-ethanol. An attractive route to prepare 1-butanol from ethanol is the Guerbet reaction. We here report the use of hydrotalcite-derived mono- (Cu-PMO or Ni-PMO) and bi-metallic (CuNi-PMO) porous metal oxide catalysts for the Guerbet coupling of ethanol to 1-butanol in a continuous flow reactor (320 °C, 0.1 MPa, LHSV = 15 mL g−1 h−1) at extended times on stream (~160 h). Two distinct regimes with different product distributions were observed for the Cu-PMO and CuNi-PMO catalyst with time on stream. At the start of the run, the initial conversion of ethanol dropped from about 85% to less than 20% after 60 h and acetaldehyde was the main product (regime 1). At prolonged times on stream (60–160 h), fairly constant low conversions of ethanol (14%) were observed and 1-butanol was the main product (regime 2). Performance of the monometallic Cu-PMO catalyst in terms of 1-butanol yield and stability was lower compared to the bi-metallic CuNi-PMO. Detailed catalyst characterization studies (XRD, H2-TPR, sorption of acrylic acid, TGA, TEM, HAADF-STEM, and EDS mapping) on both fresh and spent CuNi-PMO taken at various times on stream was performed to determine the changes in catalyst morphology and composition during a run, and particularly to obtain information on changes in catalyst structure operating in regime 1 or 2. A facile strategy is proposed to synthesize boron-doped ECP600 carbon black (B-ECP600), and the catalyst of Pt supported on boron-doped ECP600 (Pt/B-ECP600) shows smaller particle sizes and a higher electrochemical surface area (95.62 m2·gPt−1) and oxygen reduction reaction activity (0.286 A·mgPt−1 for mass activity; 0.299 mA·cm−2 for area specific activity) compared to the catalyst of Pt supported on ECP600 (Pt/ECP600). The results show that the boron doping of the carbon supports plays an important role in controlling the size and dispersion of Pt nanoparticles and the O2 adsorption/dissociation of the oxygen reduction reaction. A further accelerated durability test proves that boron doping can greatly enhance the stability of carbon support and thus improves the electrochemical performance of the catalyst during the long-time running.
