The demand for biomass utilization is increasing because of the depletion of fossil resources that are non-renewable in nature. Lignin is the second most renewable organic carbon source, but currently it has limited scope for application in the chemical and fuel industries. Lignin is a side product of the paper and pulp, sugar, and 2G bioethanol industries. Many research groups are working on the value-addition of lignin. Among the lignin depolymerization methods, catalytic hydropyrolysis is gaining attention and is playing a crucial role in developing biorefinery. The hydropyrolysis of lignin was conducted at a higher temperature in the presence of H2. The hydropyrolysis of lignin results in the selective formation of non-oxygenated cyclic hydrocarbons in a shorter reaction time. It is possible to use the cyclic hydrocarbons directly as a fuel or they can be blended with conventional gasoline. This review focuses on the prior art of pyrolysis and hydropyrolysis of lignin. Possible products of lignin hydropyrolysis and suitable synthetic routes to obtain non-oxygenated cyclic hydrocarbons are also discussed. The influence of various process parameters, such as type of reactor, metal catalyst, nature of catalytic supports, reaction temperature, and H2 pressure are discussed with regard to the hydropyrolysis of lignin to achieve good selectivity of cyclic hydrocarbons. The present review paper highlights recent progress in the processing of potential municipal solid waste (MSW) derived fuels. These wastes come from the sieved fraction (∅ < 40 mm), which, after sorting, can differ in biodegradable fraction content ranging from 5-60%. The fuels obtained from these wastes possess volumetric energy densities in the range of 15.6-26.8 MJL-1 and are composed mainly of methanol, ethanol, butanol, and carboxylic acids. Although these waste streams are a cheap and abundant source (and decrease the fraction going to landfills), syngas produced from MSW contains various impurities such as organic compounds, nitrogen oxides, sulfur, and chlorine components. These limit its use for advanced electricity generation especially for heat and power generation units based on high temperature fuel cells such as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) or molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC). In this paper, we review recent research developments in the continuous MSW processing for syngas production specifically concentrating on dry reforming and the catalytic sorbent effects on effluent and process efficiency. A particular emphasis is placed on waste derived biofuels, which are currently a primary candidate for a sustainable biofuel of tomorrow, catalysts/catalytic sorbents with decreased amounts of noble metals, their long term activity, and poison resistance, and novel nano-sorbent materials. Biofuel, an inexhaustible fuel source, plays a pivotal role in the contemporary era by diminishing the dependence on non-renewable energy sources and facilitating the mitigation of CO2 emissions. Due to the many constraints in existing technology and the resulting increased costs, the production of biofuels on a large scale is a laborious process. Furthermore, the methods used to convert varied feedstock into the intended biofuel may vary based on the specific techniques and materials involved. The demand for bioethanol is increasing worldwide due to the implementation of regulations by world nations that mandates the blending of bioethanol with petrol. In this regard, second-generation bioethanol made from lignocellulosic biomass is emerging at a rapid rate. Pre-treatment, hydrolysis, and fermentation are some of the technical, practical, and economic hurdles that the biochemical conversion method must overcome. Nanoparticles (NPs) provide a very effective approach to address the present obstacles in using biomass, due to their selectivity, energy efficiency, and time management capabilities, while also reducing costs. NPs smaller dimensions allow them to be more effective at interacting with lignocellulosic components at low concentrations to release carbohydrates that can be utilized to produce bioethanol. This article provides a concise overview of various biofuels and the nanotechnological advancements in producing it, with a particular emphasis on ethanol. It provides a detailed discussion on the application of nanotechnology at each stage of ethanol production, with a particular emphasis on understanding the mechanism of how nanoparticles interact with lignocellulose. The conversion of biomass to biofuels as a renewable energy source is continuously gaining momentum due to the environmental concerns associated with using fossil fuels. Biomass is a cost-effective, long-term natural resource that may be converted to biofuels such as biodiesel, biogas, bio-oil, and biohydrogen using a variety of chemical, thermal, and biological methods. Thermochemical processes are one of the most advanced biomass conversion methods, with much potential and room for improvement. Among various thermochemical processes, hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising technology that can convert higher water-content feedstocks into biofuel with significantly lower oxygen content and higher calorific value without requiring the biomass to be dried first. In HTL, temperature, pressure, residence time, catalyst, and solvent all play a vital role in bio-oil quality. This study provides a comprehensive review of the research and development on the effects of catalysts and the need to optimise existing catalysts for optimum biomass conversion into high-value bio-oil and other products. The catalyst of interest is ZSM-5, a heterogenous catalyst that has been seen to increase the hydrocarbon content and decrease oxygenated compounds and other unwanted by-products. Ordered mesoporous carbon CMK-3 sieves with a hexagonal structure and uniform pore size have recently emerged as promising materials for applications as adsorbents and electrodes. In this study, using sucrose as the sustainable carbon source and SBA-15 as a template, CMK-3 sieves are synthesized to form bioelectrocatalytic immobilization matrices for enzymatic biofuel cell (EFC) electrodes. Their electrochemical performance, capacitive features, and the stability of enzyme immobilization are analyzed and compared to commercially available multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The anodic reaction in the presence of glucose oxidase (GOx) and ferrocene methanol (FcMeOH) on the sustainably sourced CMK-3-based electrodes produces bioelectrocatalytic current responses at 0.5 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE) that are twice as high as on the MWCNT-based electrodes under saturated glucose conditions. For the cathodic reaction, the MWCNT-based cathode performs marginally better than the CMK-3-based electrodes in the presence of bilirubin oxidase (BOD) and 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS2−). The CMK-3-based EFCs assembled from the GOx anode and BOD cathode results in a power output of 93 μW cm−2. In contrast, the output power of MWCNT-based EFCs is approximately 53 μW cm−2. Biofuels have been derived from various feedstocks by using thermochemical or biochemical procedures. In order to synthesise liquid and gas biofuel efficiently, single-atom catalysts (SACs) and single-atom alloys (SAAs) have been used in the reaction to promote it. SACs are made up of single metal atoms that are anchored or confined to a suitable support to keep them stable, while SAAs are materials generated by bi- and multi-metallic complexes, where one of these metals is atomically distributed in such a material. The structure of SACs and SAAs influences their catalytic performance. The challenge to practically using SACs in biofuel production is to design SACs and SAAs that are stable and able to operate efficiently during reaction. Hence, the present study reviews the system and configuration of SACs and SAAs, stabilisation strategies such as mutual metal support interaction and geometric coordination, and the synthesis strategies. This review paper summarizes the current state-of-the-art of the chemical transformation of oils/fats (i.e., triacylglycerols) to the use of biofuels or bio-lubricants in the means of transport, which is a novelty. The chemical transformation is necessary to obtain products that are more usable with properties corresponding to fuels synthesized from crude oil. Two types of fuels are described—biodiesel (the mixture of methyl esters produced by transesterification) and green diesel (paraffins produced by hydrogenation of oils). Moreover, three bio-lubricant synthesis methods are described. The transformation, which is usually catalysed, depends on: (i) the type and composition of the raw material, including alcohols for biodiesel production and hydrogen for green diesel; (ii) the type of the catalyst in the case of catalysed reactions; (iii) the reaction conditions; and (iv) types of final products. The most important catalysts, especially heterogeneous and including reaction conditions, for each product are described. Production of renewable fuels from gasification is based on catalytic processes. Deep desulfurization is required to avoid the poisoning of the catalysts. It means the removal of H2S but also of organic sulfur species. Conventional cleaning consists of a several-step complex approach comprising catalytic hydro-treating followed by H2S removal. In this work, a single-stage process using a zinc and nickel oxide sorbent has been investigated for the removal of organic sulfur species present in syngas. The process is called reactive adsorption and comes from the refinery industry. The challenge investigated by CIEMAT was to prove for the first time that the concept is also valid for syngas. We have studied the process at a lab scale. Thiophene and benzothiophene, two of the main syngas organic sulfur compounds, were selected as target species to remove. The experimental study comprised the analysis of the effect of temperature (250–450 °C), pressure (1–10 bar), space velocity (2000–3500 h−1), tar components (toluene), sulfur species (H2S), and syngas components (H2, CO, and full syngas CO/CO2/CH4/H2). Operating conditions for removal of thiophene and benzothiophene were determined. Increasing pressure and temperature had a positive effect, and full conversion was achieved at 450 °C, 10 bar and 3500 h−1, accompanied by simultaneous hydrogen sulfide capture by the sorbent in accordance with the reactive adsorption desulfurization (RADS) process. Space velocity and hydrogen content in the syngas had little effect on desulfurization. Thiophene conversions from 39% to 75% were obtained when feeding synthetic syngas mimicking different compositions, spanning from air to steam-oxygen-blown gasification. Toluene, as a model tar component present in syngas, did not strongly affect the removal of thiophene and benzothiophene. H2S inhibited their conversion, falling, respectively, to 2% and 69% at 350 °C and 30% and 80% at 400 °C under full syngas blends. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, the microwave-assisted reaction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) into valuable ether and acylated production formation was investigated with the help of molybdophosphoric acid encapsulated dendritic fibrous silica (KCC-1) as a catalyst. XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, FT-IR, NH3-TPD, and TEM were used to analyze the physicochemical and structural properties of the synthesized catalysts. The microwave etherification of 5-HMF with ethanol was tested using synthesized catalysts. The effects of the reaction temperature, reaction time, catalytic amount, and microwave power were investigated. The resulting MPA-KCC-1 and IMPA-KCC-1 catalysts demonstrated excellent activity for the etherification of 5-HMF with ethanol, producing 5-(hydroxymethyl) furfural diethyl acetal (HMFDEA) and 5-(ethoxymethyl)furfural diethyl acetal (EMFDEA) products selectively. The significant advantages of the work are the selective production of EMFDEA at 82%, the catalyst can be easily removed via filtration, and the catalyst activity remains nearly intact even after five reaction cycles. A collection of Al-SBA-15 mesoporous catalysts (Si/Al = 13–174) was investigated to overcome typical accessibility constraints of microporous solids. 27Al MAS NMR confirmed the existence of tetrahedrally coordinated Al in the catalyst's framework, and the fraction of such species increased as the Si/Al ratio decreased. Brønsted acidity followed the same pattern found using n-propylamine thermodecomposition. Mesoporous catalysts with lower Si/Al ratios exhibited a higher affinity to water as quantitatively determined using water adsorption experiments. Those surface properties were correlated to the catalytic performance on oleic acid esterification. The introduction of Al into the SBA-15 framework significantly improved esterification activity, leading to conversions ranging from 70 to 93%. This was explained by the acidity engendered upon Si substitution by Al. However, a turning point from which activity started dropping was registered and it was proposed to be associated with catalyst hydrophilicity. The balance between acidity and hydrophilicity was unveiled to be of paramount importance to accomplish the best catalytic efficiency and uppermost biofuel yield. Catalyst activity was also assessed for the esterification of stearic and linoleic acids. Higher conversion rates were accomplished with unsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid > linoleic acid > stearic acid) due to the higher reactivity of the carboxylic acid moieties as a consequence of the polarity of the double bonds in the carbon chain. Over the last decades, microalgal biomass has gained a significant role in the development of different high-end (nutraceuticals, colorants, food supplements, and pharmaceuticals) and low-end products (biodiesel, bioethanol, and biogas) due to its rapid growth and high carbon-fixing efficiency. Therefore, microalgae are considered a useful and sustainable resource to attain energy security while reducing our current reliance on fossil fuels. From the technologies available for obtaining biofuels using microalgae biomass, thermochemical processes (pyrolysis, Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL), gasification) have proven to be processed with higher viability, because they use all biomass. However, due to the complex structure of the biomass (lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins), the obtained biofuels from direct thermochemical conversion have large amounts of heteroatoms (oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur). As a solution, catalyst-based processes have emerged as a sustainable solution for the increase in biocrude production. This paper's objective is to present a comprehensive review of recent developments on the catalyst-mediated conversion of algal biomass. The development of processes based on the integration of new technologies is of growing interest to industrial catalysis. Recently, significant efforts have been focused on the design of catalytic membrane reactors to improve process performance. In particular, the use of membranes, that allow a selective permeation of water from the reaction mixture, positively affects the reaction evolution by improving conversion for all reactions thermodynamically or kinetically limited by the presence of water. In this paper, how pervaporation (PV) and vapor permeation (VP) technologies can improve the catalytic performance of reactions of industrial interest is considered. Specifically, technological approaches proposed in the literature are discussed with the aim of highlighting advantages and problems encountered in order to address research towards the optimization of membrane reactor configurations for liquid biofuel production in large scale. The urgent demand for alternative energy sources has been sparked by the tremendous burden on fossil fuels and the resulting acute energy crisis and climate change issues. Lignocellulosic biomass is a copious renewable and alternative bioresource for the generation of energy fuels and biochemicals in biorefineries. Different pretreatment strategies have been established to overcome biomass recalcitrance and face technological challenges, such as high energy consumption and operational costs and environmental hazards, among many. Biological pretreatment using microbial enzymes is an environmentally benign and low-cost method that holds promising features in the effective pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. Due to their versatility and eco-friendliness, cellulases, hemicellulases, and ligninolytic enzymes have been recognized as "green biocatalysts" with a myriad of industrial applications. The current review provides a detailed description of different types of lignocellulolytic enzymes, their mode of action, and their prospective applications in the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass. Solid state fermentation holds great promise in the microbial production of lignocellulolytic enzymes owing to its energy efficient, environment friendly, and higher product yielding features utilizing the lignocellulosic feedstocks. The recent trends in the application of enzyme immobilization strategies for improved enzymatic catalysis have been discussed. The depletion of fossil fuels has heightened research and utilization of renewable energy such as biodiesel. However, this has thrown up another challenge of significant increase in its byproduct, glycerol. In view of the characteristics and potentials of glycerol, efforts are on the increase to convert it to higher-value products, which will in turn improve the overall economics of biodiesel production. These high-value products include biofuels, oxygenated fuel additives, polymer precursors and other industrial bio-based chemicals. This review gives up-to-date research findings in the conversion of glycerol to the above high-value products, with a special focus on the performance of the catalysts used and their challenges. The specific products reviewed in this paper include hydrogen, ethanol, methanol, acetin, glycerol ethers, solketal, acetal, acrolein, glycerol carbonate, 1,3-propanediol, polyglycerol and olefins. Hydrogen, an emergent alternative energy vector to fossil fuels, can be produced sustainably by fermentation of cellulose following hydrolysis. Fermentation feedstock was produced hydrolytically using hot compressed water. The addition of CO2 enhanced hydrolysis by ~26% between 240 and 260 °C with comparable hydrolysis products as obtained under N2 but at a 10 °C lower temperature. Co-production of inhibitory 5-hydromethyl furfural was mitigated via activated carbon sorption, facilitating fermentative biohydrogen production from the hydrolysate by Escherichia coli. Post-fermentation E. coli cells were recycled to biomanufacture supported Pd/Ru nanocatalyst to up-convert liquid-extracted 5-HMF to 2,5-dimethyl furan, a precursor of 'drop in' liquid fuel, in a one-pot reaction. This side stream up-valorisation mitigates against the high 'parasitic' energy demand of cellulose bioenergy, potentially increasing process viability via the coupled generation of two biofuels. Advanced biofuels are required to facilitate the energy transition away from fossil fuels and lower the accompanied CO2 emissions. Particularly, jet fuel needs a renewable substitute, for which novel production routes and technology are needed that are more efficient and economically viable. The direct conversion of bio-syngas into fuel is one such development that could improve the efficiency of biomass for jet fuel processes. In this work, bifunctional catalysts based on hierarchical zeolites are prepared, tested and evaluated for their potential use in the production of actual jet fuel. The bifunctional catalysts Co/H-mesoZSM-5, Co/H-mesoBETA and Co/H-mesoY have been applied, and their performance is compared with their microporous zeolite-based counterparts and two conventional Fischer–Tropsch Co catalysts. Co/H-mesoZSM-5 and Co/H-mesoBETA showed great potential for the direct production of jet fuel as bifunctional catalysts. Besides the high jet fuel yields under Fischer–Tropsch synthesis conditions at, respectively, 30.4% and 41.0%, the product also contained the high branched/linear hydrocarbon ratio desired to reach jet fuel specifications. The massive consumption of fossil fuels and associated environmental issues are leading to an increased interest in alternative resources such as biofuels. The renewable biofuels can be upgraded from bio-oils that are derived from biomass pyrolysis. Catalytic cracking and hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) are two of the most promising bio-oil upgrading processes for biofuel production. Heterogeneous catalysts are essential for upgrading bio-oil into hydrocarbon biofuel. Although advances have been achieved, the deactivation and regeneration of catalysts still remains a challenge. This review focuses on the current progress and challenges of heterogeneous catalyst application, deactivation, and regeneration. The technologies of catalysts deactivation, reduction, and regeneration for improving catalyst activity and stability are discussed. Some suggestions for future research including catalyst mechanism, catalyst development, process integration, and biomass modification for the production of hydrocarbon biofuels are provided. The transition from fossil to bio-based fuels is a requisite for reducing CO2 emissions in the aviation sector. Jet biofuels are alternative aviation fuels with similar chemical composition and performance of fossil jet fuels. In this context, the Hydroprocessing of Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) presents the most consolidated pathway for producing jet biofuels. The process for converting esters and/or fatty acids into hydrocarbons may involve hydrodeoxygenation, hydrocracking and hydroisomerization, depending on the chemical composition of the selected feedstock and the desired fuel properties. Furthermore, the HEFA process is usually performed under high H2 pressures and temperatures, with reactions mediated by a heterogeneous catalyst. In this framework, supported noble metals have been preferably employed in the HEFA process; however, some efforts were reported to utilize non-noble metals, achieving a similar performance of noble metals. Besides the metallic site, the acidic site of the catalyst is crucial for product selectivity. Bifunctional catalysts have been employed for the complete process of jet biofuel production with standardized properties, with a special remark for using zeolites as support. The proper design of heterogeneous catalysts may also reduce the consumption of hydrogen. Finally, the potential of enzymes as catalysts for intermediate products of the HEFA pathway is highlighted. The demand for ecofriendly green catalysts for biofuel synthesis is greatly increasing with the effects of fossil fuel depletion. Fungal lipases are abundantly used as biocatalysts for the synthesis of biofuel. The use of Botrytis cinerea lipase is an excellent approach for the conversion of agroindustrial residues into biofuel. In this study, phylogenetic analyses were carried out and the physicochemical properties of B. cinerea lipase were assessed. Furthermore, the protein structure of B. cinerea lipase was predicted and refined. Putative energy-rich phytolipid compounds were explored as a substrate for the synthesis of biofuel, owing to B. cinerea lipase catalysis. Approximately 161 plant-based fatty acids were docked with B. cinerea lipase in order to evaluate their binding affinities and interactions. Among the docked fatty acids, the top ten triglycerides having the lowest number of binding affinities with B. cinerea lipase were selected, and their interactions were assessed. The top three triglycerides having the greatest number of hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions were selected for simulations of 20 ns. The docking and simulations revealed that docosahexaenoic acid, dicranin, and hexadeca-7,10,13-trienoic acid had stable bonding with the B. cinerea lipase. Therefore, B. cinerea lipase has the potential to be used for the transesterification of fatty acids into biofuels, whereas docosahexaenoic acid, dicranin, and hexadeca-7,10,13-trienoic acid can be used as substrates of B. cinerea lipase for biofuel synthesis. Aizome (Japanese indigo dyeing) is a unique dyeing method using microbial activity under anaerobic alkaline conditions. In indigo-dye fermenting suspensions; microorganisms reduce indigo into leuco-indigo with acetaldehyde as a reductant. In this study; we constructed a semi-microbial biofuel cell using an indigo-dye fermenting suspension. Carbon fiber and Pt mesh were used as the anode and cathode materials, respectively. The open-circuit voltage (OCV) was 0.6 V, and the maximum output power was 32 µW cm−2 (320 mW m−2). In addition, the continuous stability was evaluated under given conditions starting with the highest power density; the power density rapidly decreased in 0.5 h due to the degradation of the anode. Conversely, at the OCV, the anode potential exhibited high stability for two days. However, the OCV decreased by approximately 80 mV after 2 d compared with the initial value, which was attributed to the performance degradation of the gas-diffusion-cathode system caused by the evaporation of the dispersion solution. The reforming of biofuels represents a promising technology for low carbon and renewable hydrogen production today. The core of the process is an active and stable catalyst, which can help to improve this technology and its efficiency. With this review, we aim to survey the more relevant literature on heterogeneous catalysts for the reforming of biofuels with improved sulfur tolerance. The review is structured into four main sections. Following the introduction, the fundamental aspects of sulfur poisoning are discussed. In the third section, the basic principles of the reforming of biofuels are reported, and finally, in the fourth section—the core of the review—recent progresses in the development of sulfur resistant catalysts are discussed, distinguishing the role of the metal (noble and non-noble) from that of the support. This work demonstrates the application of magnetic carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles (CEINs) for the construction of bioelectrodes in a biobattery and a biofuel cell. It has been shown that carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles are a suitable material for the immobilization of laccase (Lc) and 1,4-naphthoquinone (NQ) and fructose dehydrogenase (FDH). The system is stable; no leaching of the enzyme and mediator from the surface of the modified electrode was observed. The onset of the catalytic reduction of oxygen to water was at 0.55 V, and catalytic fructose oxidation started at −0.15 V. A biobattery was developed in which a zinc plate served as the anode, and the cathode was a glassy carbon electrode modified with carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles, laccase in the Nafion (Nf) layer. The maximum power of the cell was ca. 7 mW/cm2 at 0.71 V and under external resistance of 1 kΩ. The open-circuit voltage (OCV) for this system was 1.51 V. In the biofuel cell, magnetic nanoparticles were used both on the bioanode and biocathode to immobilize the enzymes. The glassy carbon bioanode was coated with carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles, 1,4-naphthoquinone, fructose dehydrogenase, and Nafion. The cathode was modified with carbon-encapsulated magnetic nanoparticles and laccase in the Nafion layer. Lipases are ubiquitous enzymes whose physiological role is the hydrolysis of triacylglycerol into fatty acids. They are the most studied and industrially interesting enzymes, thanks to their versatility to promote a plethora of reactions on a wide range of substrates. In fact, depending on the reaction conditions, they can also catalyze synthesis reactions, such as esterification, acidolysis and transesterification. The latter is particularly important for biodiesel production. Biodiesel can be produced from animal fats or vegetable oils and is considered as a biodegradable, non-toxic and renewable energy source. The use of lipases as industrial catalysts is subordinated to their immobilization on insoluble supports, to allow multiple uses and use in continuous processes, but also to stabilize the enzyme, intrinsically prone to denaturation with consequent loss of activity. Among the materials that can be used for lipase immobilization, mesoporous silica nanoparticles represent a good choice due to the combination of thermal and mechanical stability with controlled textural characteristics. Moreover, the presence of abundant surface hydroxyl groups allows for easy chemical surface functionalization. This latter aspect has the main importance since lipases have a high affinity with hydrophobic supports. To upgrade biomass-derived alcohol mixtures to biofuels under solvent-free conditions, MgO–Al2O3 mixed metal oxides (MMO) decorated with Ni nanoparticles (Ni–MgO–Al2O3) are synthesized and characterized. Based on the result, Ni nanoparticles are highly dispersed on the surface of MgAl MMO. As the Ni loading content varies from 2 to 10 wt.%, there is a slight increase in the mean Ni particle size from 6.7 to 8.5 nm. The effects of Ni loading amount, reducing temperature, and Mg/Al ratio on the conversion and product distribution are investigated. With the increase in both the Ni loading amount and reducing temperature, dehydrogenation (the first step of the entire reaction network) is accelerated. This results in an increase in the conversion process and a higher selectivity for the dialkylated compounds. Due to the higher strength and density of basic sites under high Mg/Al ratios, double alkylation is preferred and more long-chain hydrocarbons are obtained. A conversion of 89.2% coupled with a total yield of 79.9% for C5–C15 compounds is acquired by the as-prepared catalyst (prepared with Ni loading of 6 wt.%, reducing temperature of 700 °C, and Mg/Al molar ratio of 3. After four runs, the conversion drops by 17.1%, and this loss in the catalytic activity can be attributed to the decrease in the surface area of the catalyst and the increase in the Ni mean particle size. The booming demand for energy across the world, especially for petroleum-based fuels, has led to the search for a long-term solution as a perfect source of sustainable energy. Lignocellulosic biomass resolves this obstacle as it is a readily available, inexpensive, and renewable fuel source that fulfills the criteria of sustainability. Valorization of lignocellulosic biomass and its components into value-added products maximizes the energy output and promotes the approach of lignocellulosic biorefinery. However, disruption of the recalcitrant structure of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) via pretreatment technologies is costly and power-/heat-consuming. Therefore, devising an effective pretreatment method is a challenge. Likewise, the thermochemical and biological lignocellulosic conversion poses problems of efficiency, operational costs, and energy consumption. The advent of integrated technologies would probably resolve this problem. However, it is yet to be explored how to make it applicable at a commercial scale. This article will concisely review basic concepts of lignocellulosic composition and the routes opted by them to produce bioenergy. Moreover, it will also discuss the pros and cons of the pretreatment and conversion methods of lignocellulosic biomass. This critical analysis will bring to light the solutions for efficient and cost-effective conversion of lignocellulosic biomass that would pave the way for the development of sustainable energy systems. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) employ enzymes, subcellular structures or whole electroactive microorganisms as biocatalysts for energy conversion purposes, such as the electrosynthesis of value-added chemicals and power generation in biofuel cells. From a bioelectrode engineering viewpoint, customizable nanostructured carbonaceous matrices have recently received considerable scientific attention as promising electrode supports due to their unique properties attractive to bioelectronics devices. This review demonstrates the latest advances in the application of nano- and micro-structured carbon electrode assemblies in BES. Specifically, in view of the gradual increase in the commercial applicability of these systems, we aim to address the stability and scalability of different BES designs and to highlight their potential roles in a circular bioeconomy. Transmembrane proteins involved in metabolic redox reactions and photosynthesis catalyse a plethora of key energy-conversion processes and are thus of great interest for bioelectrocatalysis-based applications. The development of membrane protein modified electrodes has made it possible to efficiently exchange electrons between proteins and electrodes, allowing mechanistic studies and potentially applications in biofuels generation and energy conversion. Here, we summarise the most common electrode modification and their characterisation techniques for membrane proteins involved in biofuels conversion and semi-artificial photosynthesis. We discuss the challenges of applications of membrane protein modified electrodes for bioelectrocatalysis and comment on emerging methods and future directions, including recent advances in membrane protein reconstitution strategies and the development of microbial electrosynthesis and whole-cell semi-artificial photosynthesis. The main objective of this study was to examine the quantitative performance of the electrochemical redox reaction of glucose by glucosidase and oxygen with laccase in a phosphate buffer solution at pH 7.0. The characterization of electrode performance was performed by using electrochemical analysis such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The use of such electrochemical analysis (CV and EIS) enables a better understanding of the redox process, the charge transfer resistance, and, hence, the potential mass transfer among the electrode materials in phosphorus buffer solution. The experimental results show that the maximum power densities of the bioanode and the biocathode electrodes were 800 µA/cm2 and 600 µA/cm2, respectively. Both the bioanode and biocathode show high internal resistance. The occurrence of peak-separation shows an excellent mass-transfer mechanism and better chemical reactivity in the electrode. The production of biodiesel at the industrial level is mainly based on the use of basic catalysts. Otherwise, also acidic catalysis allowed high conversion and yields, as this method is not affected by the percentage of free fatty acids present in the starting sample. This work has been useful in assessing the possible catalytic pathways in the production of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), starting from different cooking waste oil mixtures, exploring particularly acidic catalysis. It was possible to state that the optimal experimental conditions required concentrated sulfuric acid 20% w/w as a catalyst, a reaction time of twelve hours, a temperature of 85 °C and a molar ratio MeOH/oil of 6:1. The role of silica in the purification method was also explored. By evaluating the parameters, type of catalyst, temperature, reaction time and MeOH/oil molar ratios, it has been possible to develop a robust method for the production of biodiesel from real waste mixtures with conversions up to 99%. The catalytic performances of Ru–Pt/SiO2–Al2O3 catalysts synthetized by three methods (co-impregnation (CI), successive impregnations (SI) and redox deposition (CR)) were compared for their sorbitol transformation to hexane under hydrothermal conditions. The existence of Pt–Ru interaction was demonstrated by TEM-EDX only on SI and CR samples, with a PtRu alloy suspected by XRD and XPS. The chemical nature of the Ru species differed according to the synthesis method with the presence of Ru4+ species on SI–(Ru–Pt) and CR catalysts. The SI–(Ru–Pt)/SiO2–Al2O3 system displayed the best metal–acid function balance leading to the highest selectivity to hexane. The study of the reactivity of isosorbide and 2,5-dimethylfuran intermediates highlighted that the first one was poorly reactive compared to the second one, and the latter was selectively convertible to hexane. The synergy effect on SI– (Ru–Pt)/SiO2–Al2O3 catalyst was attributed to the presence of small-sized bimetallic particles favoring an electronic exchange from Ru to Pt, and increasing the formation of 2,5-dimethylfuran. Conversion of waste lignocellulosic (LC) biomass, a widely-available low-cost feedstock, into value-added biobased chemicals (and biofuels) has been gaining much attention recently. Therefore, the present lignin valorisation study was aimed at developing magnetically-separable highly-active catalysts for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), also proposing surface chemical kinetics. Five carbonaceous substrate-deposited Ru were synthesised and tested for the HDO of monomer moiety eugenol. Their annealing temperatures differed, specifically between 300 and 750 °C, while one was not subjected to calcination. Experiments revealed the substantial influence of annealing temperature on the product distribution. Namely, fresh nonannealed nanocomposites were not active for hydrogenolysis. By further pretreatment increase, hydrogenation and, exclusively, the deoxygenation of saturated cyclic species, were enhanced, these being more promoted considering rates and yields than commercial carbon-supported ruthenium. Over 80 mol% of 4-propyl-cylohexanol and propyl-cyclohexane could be formed over the samples, treated at 500 and 600 °C, for 100 and 125 min, respectively, under 275 °C and 5 MPa of reactor hydrogen pressure. Interestingly, a notable 4-propyl-phenol amount was produced upon 750 °C pretreating. The intrinsic microkinetic model, developed previously, was applied to determine relevant turnover parameters. Calculated modelling results indicated a 47- and 10-fold greater demethoxylation and dehydroxylation mechanism ability upon the reheatingpreheating at 600 °C in comparison to industrial (heterogeneous) Ru/C. Woody biomass waste (Pinus radiata) coming from forestry activities has been pyrolyzed with the aim of obtaining charcoal and, at the same time, a hydrogen-rich gas fraction. The pyrolysis has been carried out in a laboratory scale continuous screw reactor, where carbonization takes place, connected to a vapor treatment reactor, at which the carbonization vapors are thermo-catalytically treated. Different peak temperatures have been studied in the carbonization process (500–900 °C), while the presence of different Ni-containing catalysts in the vapor treatment has been analyzed. Low temperature pyrolysis produces high liquid and solid yields, however, increasing the temperature progressively up to 900 °C drastically increases gas yield. The amount of nickel affects the vapors treatment phase, enhancing even further the production of interesting products such as hydrogen and reducing the generated liquids to very low yields. The gases obtained at very high temperatures (700–900 °C) in the presence of Ni-containing catalysts are rich in H2 and CO, which makes them valuable for energy production, as hydrogen source, producer gas or reducing agent.
