According to meteorological and satellite remote sensing data, the paper analyses the dynamics of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and climate extremes in the Hexi region from 2000 to 2020 using Theil-Sen Median, Mann-Kendall and linear regression methods; the relationship between climate extremes and vegetation dynamics is revealed using Pearson correlation and boosted regression trees (BRT) models. On this basis, the time-lag effect of NDVI in response to climate extremes was further investigated. The results show that the NDVI in the Hexi region increased from 2000 to 2020, with significant greening (67.72 %) and a small amount of degradation concentrated in the desert in the northwest and the oasis in the southeast. The correlation between climate extremes indicators and NDVI shows a large spatial heterogeneity, with extreme precipitation showing a high importance for all regions except oasis. NDVI has no lag or 1 month lag for extreme temperature, no lag for max 1-day precipitation amount (Rx1day) for areas other than mountainous areas, and a 3-month lag for max 5-day precipitation amount (Rx5day) for extensive areas. The results of this study could serve as a reference for the study of the relationship between vegetation dynamics and climate extremes in arid and semi-arid regions, and provide a theoretical basis for the establishment of scientific and reasonable strategies for regional vegetation restoration and conservation. • A new vacuum saturation device for high-suction tensiometers was proposed. • The new device significantly improved the measured range of suction. • We analyzed the response characteristics of an insertion tensiometer. • The developmental stages of the tensiometer response curve were suggested. Tensiometers are devices that can be used to monitor suction variation in landslides and slopes. The soil suction that can be measured with a conventional tensiometer is limited to 85 ∼ 90 kPa due to water cavitation in the tensiometer. This low measurement range of suction may be insufficient to interpret and determine the hydraulic properties of unsaturated soil, especially in semihumid and semiarid climate regions. However, in most geotechnical engineering studies, conventional tensiometers are still utilized. Although several types of high-suction tensiometers have been developed in recent decades, high suction measurements are difficult in the field because the saturation procedures for these tensiometers are complex and time consuming. Hence, the development of a simple and rapid saturation method is necessary to support their application. The vacuum saturation technique is a simple and reliable technique for saturating the porous ceramic cup of a tensiometer. However, if a high-suction tensiometer is saturated via a vacuum syringe, the measurable maximum suction is usually<200 kPa, which limits the application of tensiometers in geotechnical engineering. In this paper, we proposed a simple saturation device and a saturation method (the vacuum cylinder saturation method, VCSM) to saturate high-suction tensiometers. Soil column experiments were conducted to investigate the advantages of the VCSM and the response characteristics of insertion tensiometers. The results indicated that high-suction tensiometers could easily and steadily measure a maximum suction of 350 kPa if saturated via the VCSM. The VCSM could effectively prevent or retard the occurrence of cavitation due to the high vacuum pressure and slow progress of water filling in the tensiometer shaft. In addition, the response curve of insertion tensiometers could be divided into three stages: installing disturbance stage, delayed response stage and equilibrium stage. The extent of the disturbance caused by insertion tensiometer installation is a key factor influencing the delayed response characteristics of the tensiometer response curve. Abstract: Badlands are highly erodible landscapes with sparse vegetation and rapid runoff responses. Badland surfaces experience high erosion rates that may have a direct and marked influence on river channel networks and catchment scale sediment budgets. Erosion rates from badlands have been widely estimated by discrete observations of topographic change measured by erosion pins or profile meters. Recent developments in survey instrumentation provide the opportunity to build high-resolution topographic models over multiple spatial scales at sub-centimeter accuracy. In this paper we demonstrate how reliable estimates of topographic variables and temporal change can be derived for badlands by repeat Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) surveys undertaken at multiple temporal (event to annual) scales. A total of seven TLS-surveys were obtained in an experimental sub-humid badland located in the Central Pyrenees. Data analyses were conducted on two temporal scales: (a) five rainfall events and (b) three long term (spaced over an annual cycle) scales. Our results show a clear erosional pattern for most of the badland at the annual scale (i.e. annual net change at around −6cmyr−1). Aspect, surface roughness and slope were significant predictors of topographic change, although the sign and magnitude of the change differed at the event scale. Net topographic change at the event scale varied from −1.8 to 1.4cm. Although these patterns could be also affected by swell-shrink processes, surface roughness was more important at controlling badland geomorphological processes at the event-scale than the annual scale. Our observations suggest that longer-term studies may underestimate the importance of surface roughness as a control on badland geomorphology. At the annual scale the effect of aspect in the sign of the topographic change was removed and slope becomes more important. Erosion proved to be dominant on slopes higher than 100%. Overall, the results indicate that coupling of appropriately-scaled spatial and temporal data is critical to understand topographic changes and their drivers on badlands. Although the approach outlined in this paper was only applied to a relatively small area, with careful survey design and application of new survey technology, it could readily be upscaled to cover entire badland systems. Such surveys would permit detailed analysis of controls of sedimentological connectivity across badlands and their influence on channel networks and catchment sediment budgets. The success of reforestation of degraded areas in semiarid environments is constrained by low soil water content and fertility. In order to overcome these limitations, several site preparation techniques previous to plantation have been developed. Organic amendments have been used to improve physical soil properties in order to increase water availability for plants. However, the role of improvement in nutrient availability produced by organic amendment could have been neglected in semiarid vegetation restoration. In this paper, we analyze the effect of two site preparation treatments on soil moisture dynamics of an experimental reforestation with Pinus halepensis Mill. in a semiarid Mediterranean ecosystem. In one treatment (S) only lineal subsoiling (60–80 cm deep) was applied, in the other (SFF) a fresh urban refuse was added at a dose of 10 kg m−1 into the subsoiled furrow. During the first 5 years the growth of pines was significantly higher in SFF. At this time, we studied soil moisture dynamics at 0–20 cm in transects (for 8 months) and in soil profiles at 5, 15, 25 and 45–55 cm depth (for 23 months). Measurements made in two adjacent off-lines unaffected by site preparation were used as covariates. We also measured soil physical properties, macronutrients (N,P,K) and total organic carbon (TOC) content. No significant differences in soil physical properties were found between the amended versus not amended treatment except for hydraulic conductivity and sand fraction content. SFF treatment showed higher hydraulic conductivity, especially in top soil layers (0–10 cm), and lower content of sand fraction. Phosphorus availability was significantly higher in soil amended with organic refuse while no effect was detected in the content of the rest of macronutrients measured. In the transects, a reduction of 30% of the mean soil water content was observed in planting lines (0.14 cm 3 cm−3) in contrast with adjacent off-lines (0.20 cm 3 cm−3); no statistically significant differences between site preparation techniques were found. Soil profiles observations revealed that soil water content was significantly higher in S than in SFF treatment. This suggests that improvement in soil moisture associated to improvement in the physical structure of the soil cannot explain differences in growth. We argue instead this is mostly attributable to improved nutrient availability and microbiological activity associated with the organic amendment. • Various Connectivity Index models are tested in a Mediterranean terraced catchment. • The Index using vegetation Weighting factor simulates the field pattern best. • All the indices are poor at replicating sedimentation and disconnectivity. Connectivity analysis has proved a very valuable approach in understanding runoff and sediment fluxes in catchments. Many analyses use Connectivity Indices to model the patterns, but various versions of the Index have been developed. This paper tests the effects of these variants of the Index as applied to an agricultural-terraced catchment in the semi-arid Mediterranean region where occurrence of connectivity is relatively well documented to validate the modelling. This paper compares three versions of the Connectivity Index that use vegetation/land use (C), topography (RI) and roughness (n) as the weighting factors. Two different slope algorithms are also tested. The weightings are derived from a UAV (drone) survey, with simultaneous ground field mapping. The UAV imagery is found to provide a good, high resolution basis for determining detailed topography and vegetation cover. The slope limit present in some modelling is found to be unsuitable in this landscape where steep terrace embankments that are vegetated in places, and also partially vegetated uplands, occur. Subsequent modelling removed the slope limit. The major patterns of flow produced are similar between the models and are largely related to the overall topography and major drainage lines but considerably modified by the terracing. The model outcomes differ in detail, with the C factor model, incorporating vegetation, coming nearer to the field situation. The main deficiency in all the indices is the weakness in modelling ponding and sedimentation created by the terraces, and therefore the disconnectivity in the landscape. Comparison with field data confirms the variable connectivity in rainstorms, the effects of features such as tracks, and the effect of management actions. Abstract: Field scientists studying badland processes in Mediterranean and Semi-arid climates require assurances that the material in which gullies are presented is not dispersive. A dispersive context means; first, infiltration rates may be radically changing in very short periods due to swelling and deflocculation of clays; second, surface crusts could be the result of translocation of sodium into subsurface positions; third, rills may be formed or at least exacerbated by shallow subsurface erosion; fourth, large gullies with substantial up-channel headcuts, including so-called ‘bank gullies’, may have formed because subsurface pipes have collapsed; and fifth, that network connectivity and evolution may be principally internal, being effected by subsurface pipe capture network integration; and most importantly, the bulk of the sediment moving around in the landscape is not being lost from the surface. This paper presents a decision-support tool to assist the effective diagnosis of a landscape's principal genetic process suite. The soil's behaviour in response to its geochemistry in marls with high exchangeable sodium percentages (ESPs) is outlined in simple terms with minimum use of laboratory or field chemical investigations. Using examples the paper then presents a simple set of form indicators that can be used in the field to diagnose the possibility that subsurface process are dominating landscape erosion. Surface crust character, ephemeral rills, and large subsurface tunnel settings are explained and classified. In a final section, the geomorphological implications of piping in gullied landscapes are explored by reference to the literature on connectivity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Oasification is a complex oasis expansion and ecological processes caused by climate changes and human activities under available water supply in arid and semiarid regions. The process can effectively improve soil productivity, vegetation cover, and biomass production in fighting against land degradation, such as desertification and soil erosion. However, the significance of oasification has not yet reached the general cognition compared to desertification, which is regarded as one of the most severe global eco-environmental issues. This paper identifies desertification and oasification processes and their perspectives in cognition. The implication of oasification in combating desertification and controlling land degradation is emphasized by the justification between desertification and oasification processes. As opposite process of desertification, the oasification is an unable evasive process that can provide positive environmental effects in the control of desertification, ecological restoration, and land rehabilitation. According to the interaction of climatic variations and human activities, the oasification processes is classified into six main forms: natural oasis evolution process, engineering forest construction, conversion of natural landforms into farmlands, urban encroachment, constructed environments, and coupled ecosystems. These processes gradually modify the productive capacity of soils, increase vegetation cover for restoring degraded lands, and improve the living environment for human settlement and sustainability of an oasis ecosystem. Moreover, an overview of oasification research is detailed, and Northwest China as an example is used to illustrate the progress of the oasification research in recent decades. Currently, the oasification process and its mechanistic research still remain less concern in the arid and semiarid regions. The carbon cycle is being altered as a result of human-induced changes in the Earth's system. Therefore, ecosystems such as wetlands, authentic CO 2 sinks, are becoming especially important. Little information exits on the soil organic carbon (SOC) stock for the middle east-countries man-made wetlands making wadis permanent with the outflow of wastewater treatment plants. This paper presents the vertical distribution of SOC content, soil bulk density (SBD) and SOC density in soil of vegetated and bare sites in Wadi Al-Thulaima, one of the artificial wetlands in central Saudi Arabia. The mean distribution of SBD in the vegetated and bare sites increased significantly with depth. Inversely, the SOC content declined significantly with depth, from 17.1 g C kg −1 at 0–3 cm depth to 3.3 g C kg −1 at 15–18 cm depth in vegetated sites and from 4.7 g C kg −1 at 0–3 cm depth to 0.7 g C kg −1 at the 15–18 cm depth in bared sites. Vegetation significantly affected the SOC pool, the total mean SOC pool of the vegetated sites (2.0 kg C m −2 ) was higher than that of the bare sites (0.5 kg C m −2 ). • Hydrogeomorphic processes drive wetland-catchment connectivity dynamics. • Climatic and anthropogenic features influence landscape connectivity patterns. • The upper catchment region is well-connected and contributes to high runoff and erosion. • Identifying hotspots of catchment connectivity change can inform management. Wetlands in semiarid regions are important systems that provide numerous ecosystem services in otherwise dry environments. Their functioning depends on the connected transfer of materials from source to sink which is determined by the degree of landscape connectivity. A combination of catchment characteristics, climatic variables and human activities are important factors driving landscape connectivity; however, wetland management rarely considers all these factors when conserving these systems. In this paper, we evaluate the landscape connectivity of the Mara River catchment in East Africa to understand the hydrogeomorphic processes driving material transfer to the floodplain wetlands. This semiarid catchment hosts the UNESCO World Heritage Serengeti-Mara ecosystem providing a unique opportunity to assess the influence of protected areas on wetland-catchment connectivity patterns. We use the index of connectivity and Emerging Hot Spot analysis to assess the hillslope-channel connectivity and identify specific subcatchments which have contributed positively to the wetland's connectivity over time. The catchment-scale analysis highlights significant spatiotemporal variability in connectivity patterns and associated sediment dynamics. The results reflect that the Upper catchment is highly connected owing to the steep slopes and high rainfall and is likely responsible for the greatest sediment inputs into the fluvial network. Under greater future climatic and anthropogenic pressures, this region is expected to contribute increased sediment inputs into the river which will likely affect the geomorphic response of the downstream floodplain wetlands and may need to be prioritised for management. The protected areas are generally poorly connected due to intact vegetation and their local sediment contribution to the fluvial network is comparatively lower. Consideration of their placement in the catchment is important for managing these ecologically significant areas. Understanding the patterns and variability of hillslope-channel connectivity and the broader-scale landscape connections can help to identify and prioritise existing and emerging hotspots of change in large, semiarid catchments. Environmental fluctuations during the Holocene caused important landscape changes in the Central Ebro Basin, which is a very sensitive region due to its semiarid climate, lithology, and continuous human presence. Severe erosion processes hinder palaeoenvironmental and archaeological record preservation. Infills of ephemeral stream valleys in semiarid environments are some of the best contexts for geoarchaeological studies. In this paper, we analyse the geomorphological processes, pedological features, and charcoal and pollen content and composition of the sedimentary sequence of La Poza Valley catchment area, with the support of additional information from La Bajada Valley. 14 C dates for 13 charcoal fragments provide the necessary chronological control. We describe 5 sedimentary units and a polycyclic sequence of six soils that covers most of the Holocene, beginning ca. 9.5 ky cal BP. Buried soils help to identify stability periods in the sedimentary sequence, while incision stages are detected through erosive contacts and terraced organisation of the sedimentary units. Charcoal and pollen content and composition, as well as the soil development, reveal an open forest of junipers and pines for the Early Holocene in the lower part of the sequence (mainly in Unit 1), very different from the current deforested landscape, also represented in the sequence (Unit 4). Thus, La Poza record shows the environment was favourable for hunter-gatherers from the Late Mesolithic and for the first Neolithic farmers. From then on, progressive degradation due to a combination of climate changes and increasing human pressure led to the current deforested landscape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drylands are important ecosystems that are facing severe challenges under a changing climate. The relationships between soil moisture and vegetation have garnered international interest because of their significant impact on ecosystem restoration in semi-arid and arid regions. Grasslands are among the largest ecosystems in the world and are very important to dryland ecosystems. The Loess Plateau in China is an important example of drylands, and grasslands occupy more than 1/3 of its area. Water is the primary limiting factor of vegetation restoration, so understanding the relationship between grasslands and soil moisture on the Loess Plateau is imperative. The processes of precipitation, soil surface infiltration and evaporation, root water uptake and leaf transpiration are important for the relationship between grasslands and soil moisture. This paper found the following research topics that were related to the Loess Plateau based on 283 references of local studies from CNKI, ScienceDirect and Springer: (1) the effects of grasslands on soil moisture, including the influence of precipitation, geography, grassland type, grass age and growth stage on soil moisture and soil moisture determination methods; (2) the influence of soil moisture on grasslands, including the influence of soil moisture stress on grass growth and the methods for determining the physiological and ecological characteristics of grass; and (3) models of the relationships between grasslands and soil moisture. International references were used to explain certain processes and were compared with studies on Loess Plateau. Existing studies on the Loess Plateau paid more attention to these phenomena compared to water transport processes. Additional process-based studies with greater accuracy, longer time series, and larger spatial scales are needed to achieve ecosystem sustainability on the Loess Plateau. This summary of studies on the Loess Plateau may provide examples for research on arid and semi-arid areas in other countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Great Wall of China roughly follows a transition belt between subhumid region and arid/semiarid region, often thought of as a boundary between agricultural and pastoral area. However, in the mid-18th century, the farming activity began to cross the Great Wall and infiltrate the pastoral region. The agro-pastoral line moved substantially northwards and westwards resulting in a changing landscape beyond the Great Wall. The Catholic Church, which had been proselytizing in Inner Mongolia since the turn of the 18th century, played an important role in this historical process. This paper evaluates the role of Catholic churches in this shift of the agro-pastoral line in Chahar Region in the 19th century. Chahar, a semi-arid region in the southeastern Mongolia Plateau, had a significant Catholic activity after 1700s. As congregation obtained land from the Mongols, missionaries converted local Han Chinese to Catholicism while lending land, housing and farm implements. By 1952 most people living there had been converted. As a result of intensive land management by the Catholic missions, the semiarid landscapes, formerly used for grazing lands, were changed to more intensive agricultural use. This study examines the important role of the practices of an authoritarian religious organization on the movement of the agro-pastoral line and the relationship between those religious missions and environmental change. This study shows that when the missionaries began preaching to the impoverished Han people coming from within the Great Wall rather than the local Mongols of the Chahar Region, increasing numbers of Han Catholic villages appeared beyond the Great Wall, cultivating what used to be grazing land. Meanwhile, to manage these Han people, the local administrative system was transformed from the Meng-Banner system into Banner-county system. As the name suggests, this latter system was based on Mongol-controlled Banners and Han-controlled counties. Thus the boundary between Banner and county hints at the movement of the agro-pastoral line. By tracking this movement we found that the agro-pastoral line in Chahar region shifted in the late Qing Dynasty. Meanwhile, Catholic villages became more concentrated in the counties, indicating that the Catholic Church had played an important role in this movement of the agro-pastoral line. • Wind erosion is the most environmental threat in arid and semi-arid regions. • Aridisols of south eastern Tunisia showed high values of wind erodible fraction EF. • Prediction equations of EF are not applicable for Aridisols of Tunisia. • The developed prediction equation of EF is largely different than other over world. • The developed equation showed that sand and CaCO 3 contents controlling soil EF. Wind erosion is a serious environmental threat. However, for Northern Africa estimates or predictions of the wind erodible fraction (WEF) in arid soils are rare. This study was conducted to (i) compare the flat sieve (WEF fs) and the Fryrear equation (WEF c) in order to estimate WEF (ii) fuse the directly measured WEF fs values to other measured soil parameters, i.e. soil organic matter (SOM), carbonate (CaCO 3), sand, silt and clay content, to obtain a new improved WEF equation prediction. Samples were collected at ten locations near Gabès (Southern Tunisia) at three depths (0–2.5, 2.5–5 and 5–15 cm) in cultivated or native soils. The obtained WEF fs were>80% and therefore the soils would be classified as highly wind erodible (WEF > 50%). The lowest WEF fs values were found in the cultivated soils (82.5%), ranging from 82.5 to 96.9%. Our WEF fs estimates were positively correlated to sand (r = 0.78; p < 0.001), but negatively correlated to CaCO 3 content (r = -0.82; p < 0.001). Interestingly, neither SOM nor clay content was strongly related to WEF fs. However, the WEF fs in cultivated soils was significantly linked to ∑(SOM + clay content). The Fryrear estimation predicted all WEF c values to be less than 60%. This clear mismatch to our data relates to CaCO 3 presence, high sand and low SOM content in our Tunisian soils, when compared to US soils used to establish the Fryrear method. Therefore, we established a new equation for the wind erodible fraction, WEF mod (%) = 125.83–0.59*Clay(%) − 0.22*Silt(%) − 0.25*Sand(%) + 0.29*SOM(%) −0.69*CaCO 3 (%) (r = 0.85; p < 0.001). In the studied regions of Tunisia, this equation predicts much better soil WEF. The present paper is a first study to improve WEF estimation and prediction in arid North Africa. The influence of different tillage practices (conventional tillage, reduced tillage, and no-till on bulk density, total porosity, penetration resistance, field capacity, field water content and infiltration rate) on samples of loamy soil in a semi-arid region were investigated by Gozubuyuk et al. (2014). There is need to further discuss some of the main issues raised in Gozubuyuk et al. (2014) study. One of such issues is the consideration of pore size distribution into two classes of micro-pores and macro-pores. In this paper, the basic classes of soil pores were not taken into consideration, including aeration pores/macro-pores (> 30 μm diameter), capillary pores/medium-pores (0.2 to 30 μm diameter) and micro-pores (< 0.2 μm diameter), in order to discuss field capacity; especially, plant available water content. Another problem deals with the conclusion where authors stated that “the no-till system increased winter wheat germination due to higher water content”. The paper did not analyze the effective role of biological activity and plant nutrition, above all, organic input (mulch effect on temperature) effect was ignored. Therefore, it could not be concluded that the increased winter wheat germination under no-till practice is only due to higher water content. The discussion is inconsistent about the probable reasons of higher infiltration in no-tillage. Moreover, while the infiltration rate is increased under no-tillage, a problem was raised during interpretation regarding the concept of infiltration improvement, especially in a semi-arid region. Abstract: Badlands have long been considered as model landscapes due to their perceived close relationship between form and process. The often intense features of erosion have also attracted many geomorphologists because the associated high rates of erosion appeared to offer the opportunity for studying surface processes and the resulting forms. Recently, the perceived simplicity of badlands has been questioned because the expected relationships between driving forces for erosion and the resulting sediment yield could not be observed. Further, a high variability in erosion and sediment yield has been observed across scales. Finally, denudation based on currently observed erosion rates would have lead to the destruction of most badlands a long time ago. While the perceived simplicity of badlands has sparked a disproportional (compared to the land surface they cover) amount of research, our increasing amount of information has not necessarily increased our understanding of badlands in equal terms. Overall, badlands appear to be more complex than initially assumed. In this paper, we review 40years of research in the Zin Valley Badlands in Israel to reconcile some of the conflicting results observed there and develop a perspective on the function of badlands as model landscapes. While the data collected in the Zin Valley clearly confirm that spatial and temporal patterns of geomorphic processes and their interaction with topography and surface properties have to be understood, we still conclude that the process of realizing complexity in the “simple” badlands has a model function both for our understanding as well as perspective on all landscape systems. Abstract: The Bardenas Reales Natural Park (western Ebro Basin, NE Spain) constitutes a fragile landscape where the prevailing semiarid climate and erodability of the bedrock have resulted in high sensitivity to erosion/sedimentation oscillations during the Holocene. In this paper, we present new chronologic, sedimentologic, paleomagnetic and environmental magnetic results from the oldest unit (Qah1) of a system of nested cut-and-fill alluvial sequences, which is 18m thick and crops out extensively in the central part of the natural park at the Bardena Blanca Depression. Radiocarbon dating indicates that Early Holocene unit Qah1 is younger than 9.38–8.89calkyrBP and gives ages of 8.92–8.42 and 7.59–7.37calkyrBP in the middle and uppermost parts of the unit, respectively. Sedimentologic data indicate that distal alluvial sediments of unit Qah1 accumulated in sandy mud flats and ephemeral playa lakes under arid conditions. The coincidence of enhanced magnetite content with moderate to intense root bioturbation in the lowermost and likely also uppermost sediments of unit Qah1 suggests that magnetite formed authigenically in response to relatively wetter conditions at the beginning and end of this dry period. These results indicate that onset and cessation of alluvial aggradation mark the passing of a geomorphologic threshold, most likely plant cover in the watershed, during a progressive drying–wetting event. The radiocarbon-based age model of unit Qah1 indicates that alluvial aggradation under arid conditions began at 9.13calkyrBP and ended at 7.16calkyrBP. This period is strikingly centered at around the 8.2kyr cold event but spans a longer time period, supporting the notion of a global climatic deterioration as the underlying cause for this event. Paleomagnetic directions do not clearly display the characteristic patterns recognized in paleosecular variation curves derived from other European lacustrine sediments and cannot be used to refine the radiocarbon-based age model for unit Qah1. Our results demonstrate a quick and strong response of alluvial systems to Early Holocene climate variability in fragile Mediterranean landscapes such as those at the semiarid Bardenas Reales Natural Park. Abstract: In this paper we explore the evidence for Holocene Rapid Climate Changes (RCCs) in Western Mediterranean records, examining similarities and differences in the timing and nature of impacts on different components of the natural environment (vegetation, fluvial and coastal sedimentation, fire activity, soil formation). Marine, lacustrine, and fluvial archives of the Western Mediterranean (Iberian Peninsula and Northwest Africa) provide evidence for both pervasive millennial-scale climatic variability and abrupt (decadal- to centennial-scale) transitions. We focus in particular on three RCCs characterised by high-latitude cooling, glacier advances and North-Atlantic ice-rafting events: the mid-Holocene RCC interval 6–5calka BP, the late-Holocene RCC interval 3.5–2.5calka BP, and the historical RCC interval known as the Little Ice Age (LIA, 1300–1950AD). Evidence from multiple records indicates wide-ranging impacts of RCCs in the Western Mediterranean region. The three RCC intervals were characterised, however, by contrasting hydrological situations in the Western Mediterranean, with prevailing dry conditions including marked aridification events during the RCC intervals 6–5 and 3.5–2.5calka BP, and prevailing or recurrent wet conditions during the LIA. We examine issues of proxy sensitivity in palaeoecological and geomorphological records and evaluate examples of contrasting geomorphological responses to regional climatic triggers between humid and semi-arid sectors of the Western Mediterranean. Finally, we consider the long-term sensitivity of the region to rapid climate change, the role of threshold changes, and the extent to which this region represents a “fragile” landscape. Abstract: Semiarid karst landscapes represent an important ecosystem surrounding the Mediterranean Basin for which little is known on runoff generation. Knowledge of the sources and patterns of variation in infiltration–runoff processes and their controls is important for understanding and modelling the hydrological functions of such ecosystems. The objectives of this paper are to determine the infiltration rates and their controls in a representative mountain karst area (Sierra de Gádor, SE Spain) at micro-plots and to investigate the integrated response of rainfall on a typical hillslope. Rainfall simulations in micro-plots and natural rainfall-runoff monitoring on a hillslope were carried out complementarily. We investigated the role of soil surface components (vegetation, rock outcrop, fracture, and soil crust), topographic position, antecedent soil moisture, and rainfall characteristics in regulating infiltration–runoff processes. Results of rainfall simulation revealed the importance of vegetation cover and the presence of rock fractures in promoting the infiltration in the limestone karst landscape, while bare patches and rock outcrops acted as sources for runoff. All plots with >50% vegetation cover had no runoff with up to 55mmh−1 of simulated rain. In contrast, nearly all bare plots had runoff under the same simulated rain, with runoff coefficients ranging from 3.1 to 20.6% on dry soil surface conditions, and from 2.0 to 65.4% on wet soil surfaces. Runoff coefficients amounted to 59.0–79.5% for rock outcrops without cracks, but were drastically reduced by the presence of cracks. The surfaces with rock fragments resting on the soil (generally located in the middle of the slopes) prevented more effectively the runoff generation than those surfaces where rock fragments were embedded in the top soil. Antecedent soil moisture had significant impact on runoff generation, with wet soil having doubled runoff coefficient, shortened time to runoff, and increased runoff rate compared to the same but dry soil. Linear regressions indicated that the main controls for constant infiltration rate were the cover percentages of vegetation and litter, plus rainfall intensity; while the major controls for runoff coefficient were the bare soil and vegetation coverage, plus rainfall intensity. High infiltration rates measured at the micro-plots agreed with low intra-event runoff coefficients (mostly below 1%) observed under natural rainfalls at the hillslope. Runoff depth and coefficient at the hillslope was significantly correlated with rainfall depth, maximum hourly rainfall intensity and antecedent precipitation over 20days (AP20). During the 1.5-year monitoring period from Sep-2003 to Mar-2005, the overall infiltration was 41% of the total rainfall amount and the maximum infiltration rate was almost 94% of the largest single rainfall event. The results from this study contribute to improved understanding of the magnitude and controls of the surface runoff in semiarid karst mountain areas. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The effectiveness of water harvesting systems collecting surface runoff form rangeland hillslopes in semi-arid regions is difficult to predict, since the hydrological response at the outlet depends on the heterogeneity of hydrological processes. The lack of continuous runoff pathways, due to the irregular spatial patterns of soil properties and the variety of antecedent soil moisture conditions directly influence runoff generation and control discharge into the water harvesting cisterns. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of semi-arid hillslopes in generating runoff for water harvesting systems. Runoff was estimated by the STREAM expert-based model which was applied to three semi-arid hillslopes (0.4 to 6 ha). On the one hand the STREAM model rules were adapted to the regional conditions i.e. an antecedent precipitation index was adjusted to local soil moisture conditions and the rainfall duration was defined as the total rainfall event quantity and the effective rainfall duration (P tot/t eff). On the other hand, the distribution of rock outcrop and vegetation cover along the slopes was used to define homogeneous hydrological units. Final infiltration capacities were attributed to these hydrological units based on values found in the literature. The prediction performances are acceptable for the three water harvesting systems with an RMSE of 13.9 m3. It was shown that the rainfall/runoff model was more sensitive to the duration of the storm than to the antecedent soil moisture conditions. The use of a unique set of hydrological parameters for the three water harvesting systems on representative hillslopes allows the runoff prediction from any rangeland hillslope within the same region. Furthermore, the spatial patterns of soil surface characteristics are crucial for collecting runoff at the outlet of the system. Model runs demonstrated that degradation of vegetation and sealing of very small areas within flow paths can lead to an increase of annual runoff by as much as a factor two. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper deals with gully retreat rates at different time scales, whereby the short-term time scale may span a time interval of 1–5 years, the medium-term time scale a time interval of 5–50 years, and the long-term time scale a time interval of more than 50 years. An analysis of high-altitude aerial photographs in combination with ground measurements allowed us to quantify volumetric gully-head retreat rates for 12 permanent gullies in Southeast Spain (Guadalentin and Guadix study areas) over a 40–43 year time interval (medium-term time scale). This resulted in an average retreat rate (Ve) of 17.4 m3 year−1. A power relationship between drainage-basin area (A) and medium-term volumetric gully-head retreat rate, Ve=0.069A0.380 (R2=0.51, n=21), was found by combining the gully-head retreat rates obtained in this study with those obtained by a dendrochronological method. The exponent (b) and the coefficient of determination (R2) of the power relationships Ve=aAb increases from the short-term to the long-term time scale, expressing the increasing importance of drainage-basin area in gully development with time. Considerable differences between gully-head retreat rates measured at the short and medium-term time scales at individual gullies showed the importance of land-use changes and unsuccessful management practices on gully-head retreat, and the episodic nature of gully-head retreat when piping and tension cracking are involved. Higher gully-head retreat rates are obtained at the medium-term time scale compared to the short-term time scale but the differences are not significantly different at α=10%. The medium-term methods tend to measure proportionally more high gully retreat rates, but less extreme values compared to the short-term method. This is explained by a more equal distribution of extreme rainfall events both in space and time at a longer-term time scale, and hence a higher probability of measuring the average effect of both small and extreme rainfall events at each gully.
