Loess tunnels are very common in the Loess Plateau, and they pose unique geological threats. Loess tunnels are often difficult to detect and control due to their concealment and sudden appearance. Thus far, research on the genesis and evolution of loess tunnels remains scarce. In this paper, the genesis and evolution mechanism of the loess tunnels in the Loess Plateau is studied in depth, and the location, shape, and size information are obtained via field investigations. The potential correlations between the loess sediment, the basic physical properties (depth, water content, particle size composition, collapsibility coefficient, and self-weight collapsibility coefficient), and the tunnel density are inferred based on the Pearson's correlation coefficients and tests on the physical and mechanical properties of the loess sediments. In addition, spatial statistical modelling is employed to justify and predict the observed spatial distribution of the loess tunnels assuming Gaussian Markov random fields. The formation of loess tunnels is due to a combination of factors, including the formation thickness, soil properties, joints and fissures, topography, hydrogeology, and climatic conditions. The thickness of the loess, loess sediment properties, and their spatial relationship jointly determine the material basis of the formation of the loess tunnels. The loess tunnels at different depths have different main controlling factors that are hierarchical by depth. The evolution process of loess tunnels can be divided into five stages: the incubation stage, formation stage, development stage, failure stage, and withered stage. The characteristics of each stage are discussed in detail. Our work provides novel insights into subsurface erosion from the aspect of soil tunnels. • Thermal effects on soil hydraulic and mechanical properties were investigated. • An increasing temperature decreased the soil Ψ in the middle stage of SWRC. • The soil cohesion increased as the power function with increasing soil Ψ. • The soil friction angle increased as the linear function with increasing soil Ψ. • The increase in soil temperature decreased soil matric suction and shear strength. The soil hydrologic and mechanical properties play an important role in the slope stability in the red soil hilly region of southern China. In this study, the red soil layers in a collapsing gully wall were used to investigate the effects of temperature on the soil water retention curve (SWRC) and shear strength. The results showed that the SWRCs of the red soil under different temperatures could be accurately described by the van Genuchten (VG) model (R 2 > 0.95, root mean square error (RMSE) < 0.024). An increasing temperature significantly decreased the soil water holding capacity (WHC), especially in the intermediate range of the SWRCs of the red soil. The soil saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) increased linearly with temperature. The soil cohesion and soil friction angle decreased by approximately 44.13% and 30.40% respectively when the soil water content increased from 0.24 cm3 cm−3 to 0.42 cm3 cm−3. The mean soil cohesion and soil friction angle decreased approximately 8.56 kPa and 1.34° respectively when the soil temperature increased from 25 °C to 40 °C. Regression analysis showed that the soil cohesion increased as the power function with increasing matric suction (0–2000 kPa), and friction angle increased as the linear function with increasing matric suction. These results illustrated that an increase in temperature will decrease soil matric suction and shear strength but enhance the soil infiltration rate under certain soil moisture levels. Wetlands play an important role in ecological health and sustainable development, their spatial distribution and explicit thematic information are crucial for developing management and conservation measures. The Yellow River Delta is an important coastal wetland reserve in China, its wetland types are complex and diverse, natural and artificial wetlands are easily confused, making refined classification more difficult. To address this challenge, we proposed a new wetland mapping approach by combing hierarchical classification framework (HCF) and optimal feature selection. First, inheritance-based multiscale segmentation was carried out to obtain object-oriented images, and decision tree classification was used for preliminarily identify wetland and non-wetland. Second, recursive feature elimination and cross-validation (RFECV) was used to select optimal features, which was then utilized for wetland refinement extraction by using random forest (RF) algorithm. The experiments were performed based on Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and NASADEM datasets. The results show that effective wetland classification features can be selected by using RFECV. The feature scores are as follows, red edge index > spectral features > vegetation/water body index > backscatter coefficient > topographic features > texture features > location feature > urban index > geometric feature. The overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient of the method in this paper are 92.36 % and 0.915, which are 14.62 % and 6.68 % higher than using only HCF or only RFECV. Compared with the GlobeLand30 and CAS_Wetlands datasets, the refinement of wetland mapping in this paper is higher. This study provides a new idea in methodological selection for wetland information extraction, and the resulting coastal wetland map can be used for sustainable management, ecological assessment and conservation of the Yellow River Delta. Oasification is a complex oasis expansion and ecological processes caused by climate changes and human activities under available water supply in arid and semiarid regions. The process can effectively improve soil productivity, vegetation cover, and biomass production in fighting against land degradation, such as desertification and soil erosion. However, the significance of oasification has not yet reached the general cognition compared to desertification, which is regarded as one of the most severe global eco-environmental issues. This paper identifies desertification and oasification processes and their perspectives in cognition. The implication of oasification in combating desertification and controlling land degradation is emphasized by the justification between desertification and oasification processes. As opposite process of desertification, the oasification is an unable evasive process that can provide positive environmental effects in the control of desertification, ecological restoration, and land rehabilitation. According to the interaction of climatic variations and human activities, the oasification processes is classified into six main forms: natural oasis evolution process, engineering forest construction, conversion of natural landforms into farmlands, urban encroachment, constructed environments, and coupled ecosystems. These processes gradually modify the productive capacity of soils, increase vegetation cover for restoring degraded lands, and improve the living environment for human settlement and sustainability of an oasis ecosystem. Moreover, an overview of oasification research is detailed, and Northwest China as an example is used to illustrate the progress of the oasification research in recent decades. Currently, the oasification process and its mechanistic research still remain less concern in the arid and semiarid regions. • The elasticity index is adopted to tradeoff the benefits and ecological effects of land consolidation. • Soil erosion of slopes with vegetation is tolerable under climate change. • Slopes below 63° are stable in 6 slope scenarios. • The slope of 53° with Caragana microphylla is the optimal combination scheme. Soil erosion and slope instability restrict the cutting slopes, especially the high and steep slopes of a construction site. It is difficult for present research of observation experiments and investigation to deal with these problems under climate change. Focusing on gully land consolidation in the loess plateau of China, this paper put forward a technical procedure to explore the optimal combination scheme of slope-cutting and vegetation-planting in future climate change. The technical procedure includes scenarios design, model calculation, and scheme optimization. This paper selected a back catchment in Yangjuangou catchment of Yan'an City as a case study and designed 54 combined scenarios consisting of 6 slopes, 3 types of vegetation (including bare land), and 3 climate scenarios. The soil erosion and slope stability under different scenarios were quantified using FLAC/Slope software and Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) model. This paper innovatively designed elasticity indicators to trade off the increase of the flat land area formed by land consolidation and the resulting reduction in slope stability and increase in soil erosion. It is found that the slope of 53° with Caragana microphylla could be the optimal combination scheme considering flat land creating and the safety of slopes. When combined with external agents such as climate, these alterations facilitate geomorphological evolution, such as gully erosion in hilly regions. The lack of fundamental understanding about how gully erosion forms have led to an increasing trend of gully erosion in recent years. Because the weathering-controlled properties of granite regolith have a significant effect on gully development, it is vital to assess the chemical weathering degree. However, despite extensive studies on quantifying weathering degree using chemical weathering indices, less is known about how these parameters are correlated with the mechanical properties of granite regolith. To this end, a typical weathering profile is established for granite in Jiangmen, China. This paper investigates the chemical weathering of granite, evaluates the appropriateness of previous chemical weathering indices, and correlates them with the mechanical parameters of granite regolith. Several suitable indices, including CIA, Bases/Al 2 O 3 , Bases/R 2 O 3 , ba 1 , ba 3 , CIW, I mob , and PIA, are selected and correlated with the mechanical parameters. These indices apply well, with some scattering when they are correlated with the internal frictional angle of granite residual soil. This paper provides a comprehensive datset regarding the physical, mineralogical, petrographical, geochemical, and mechanical properties of granite regolith, and enhances the understanding of chemical weathering, especially its correlations with the mechanical properties of regolith. Abstract The need to estimate event soil loss better than the USLE and the RUSLE has led to the development of WEPP and the USLE-M, a modification of the USLE that estimates event soil loss for bare fallow runoff and soil loss plots in the USLE database better than the USLE/RUSLE when runoff is known or predicted well. Although the erosivity indices in the USLE-M and the USLE/RUSLE focus on raindrop driven erosion, the calibration of the erodibility index on plots where rilling occurs enables the USLE-M and the USLE/RUSLE to be applied on areas where sheet and rill erosion occur. This paper presents results from the application of both WEPP and the USLE-M to modelling event soil loss from 6 runoff and soil plots at the Ansai Research Station of Soil and Water Conservation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (36°56′N, 109°16′E) produced from steep slopes (8.7%–53.2%) where rills frequently developed under natural rainfall during 1985–1992. WEPP was calibrated to minimize the mean squared error (MSE) between measured runoff and predicted runoff for the events where WEPP predicted runoff and soil loss to occur. The number of events where WEPP predicted runoff and soil loss to occur varied from 25% to 41% of events that actually produced soil loss. In the comparison with WEPP, the USLE-M erodibility factor was calibrated by dividing the total observed soil loss where WEPP predicted runoff and soil loss to occur by the total of the USLE-M erosivity factor for the same set of events. Consequently, the total amount of soil lost estimated for these events by both models were the same. This enabled the ability of the models to predict event soil loses to be examined using the Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency index. In every case, the efficiency index values for the USLE-M were higher than for WEPP irrespective of whether the values of USLE-M erosivity index were determined using observed or WEPP predicted runoff. As a model of rainfall erosion, focusing on a process based approach has not resulted in WEPP performing as well as or better than the USLE-M on the steep bare fallow plots of loessal soil at the Ansai Research Station in China. • River sediments in the eastern and western Fujian have distinct source rock compositions. • Indosinian magmatic rocks predominantly originated from the Proterozoic crust. • Yanshanian magmatic rocks originated from both the DM (Depleted Mantle) and Proterozoic crust. • The middle Zhenghe-Dabu Fault predominantly account for geochemical heterogeneity of river sediments. The Cathaysia Block is featured by intense tectonic activities and magmatic intrusions during the Mesozoic, and its geochemical evolution might greatly imprint the river sediment compositions in southeast China. This paper presents a comprehensive synthesis of data from petrology, U-Pb geochronology, and geochemistry of both river sediments and plutons in Fujian Province, and aims to reveal the constraints of Mesozoic geochemical heterogeneity and geochronology of the Northeast Cathaysia Block on local river sediment geochemistry. The Fujian terrane and relating river systems can be divided into western and eastern parts with the boundary of the Zhenghe-Dabu Fault. The sediments of eastern rivers are characterized by heavy minerals derived from granites and two major U-Pb age groups (90–110 Ma and 120–150 Ma) of detrital zircons. However, the sediments of western rivers are featured by heavy minerals from the Precambrian rocks and have seven zircon U-Pb age groups (from 90 Ma to 3.0 Ga). The Indonesian magmatic rocks predominantly originated from the Proterozoic crust, with less contribution from the depleted mantle, which are much different from the Yanshanian A-type granites and gabbros in the eastern terrane. We infer that the middle part of Zhenghe-Dabu Fault formed in the Jingningian Period primarily caused geochemical and geochronological heterogeneity of the Northeast Cathaysia Block, which further determined the totally different sediment compositions between the western and eastern Fujian rivers. Phosphorus (P) is an indispensable element for all life on Earth, and clarifying soil P components can favor the precise management of soil nutrients. This paper hypothesized that soil total P (TP) and P components in different aggregates and leachable fractions differed between poplar shelterbelts and farmlands. Such changes were strongly associated with fungal variations. Total 24 soil samples were collected from 0 to 40 cm soil layers in 12 pairs of poplar shelterbelts and neighboring farmlands in four sites in Northeast China Plain. The soil P was determined in three soil aggregates (macroaggregates, microaggregates, and silt + clay) and nine sequential leachable fractions (H 2 O-Pi, NaHCO 3 -Pi, NaHCO 3 -Po, NaOH-Pi, NaOH-Po, HCl-Pi, conc. HCl-Pi, conc. HCl-Po, and Re-P), and soil fungi in bulk soils were analyzed by Illumina sequencing. Our data revealed that poplar shelterbelts had 27.75% lower soil TP than neighboring farmlands, mainly occurring in macroaggregates (0.25–2 mm) with no changes in microaggregates and silt + clay. In leachable P fractions, reduced TP was caused by changes in HCl-Pi contributed 47.8%, and NaOH-Pi contributed 34.2% (low or medium plant-available). Poplar shelterbelts decreased the soil fungi diversity and network relations with fewer nodes, edges, and modularity but contained more ectomycorrhizal and less pathogenic fungi than farmlands. The macroaggregates P reduction was mainly driven by fungal community changes, while the fraction-P changes were more closely related to soil pH and tree growth of poplar trees. Our findings highlighted high P depletion from poplars, possible risks for plant availability, and soil fungi roles in the China shelterbelt program, supporting the evaluation and management of soil P-related nutrients in the farmland afforesting system. Landslides, one of the most common hazards around the world, have brought about severe damage to life and property of human. To prevent and mitigate landslides, various models have been introduced to assess landslide susceptibility. In this paper, Hoeffding Tree (HT), a prevailing data stream mining algorithm, was employed to predict landslide susceptibility in Muchuan County, China for the first time. Meanwhile, Logistic Model Tree (LMT) and Bayes Network (BN) were applied to produce landslide susceptibility maps for comparison. The model performances were evaluated by Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves and areas under the curves (AUC). To obtain landslide inventory map, 279 landslides data was collected, and training and validation datasets were randomly divided with a proportion of 70% to 30%. Furthermore, twelve conditioning factors (altitude, slope angle, profile curvature, plan curvature, slope aspect, distance to roads, distance to rivers, TWI, NDVI, soil, land use and lithology) were selected to construct landslide susceptibility models. Moreover, correlations between conditioning factors and landslides were analyzed using Frequency Ratio (FR). The results showed landslides are prone to occur in areas where human activities concentrate, and all three models exhibited satisfying performances. Concretely, for training dataset, LMT model showed the highest AUC (0.854), followed by HT (0.726) and BN (0.709). However, for validation dataset, LMT and BN models generated similar AUC values (0.761 and 0.764 respectively), and the highest AUC value belonged to HT (0.802). The distributions of landslide susceptibility zones revealed that the interior of county town is mainly seated in low and very low susceptibility zones, whereas regions close to the border suffer high and very high landslide risk. The results acquired in this paper are significant to landslide prevention and urban planning in Muchuan, China. Abstract: Rapid economic development has spurred land use change in China since the Chinese government initiated its economic reform in 1978. Although many papers have analyzed the characteristics of land use change, especially cropland conversion to non-agricultural use affected by economic development in the developed regions of China, relatively less attention has been paid to studying the characteristics of land use change affected by both economic development and environmental changes in its undeveloped regions. This paper analyzes the land use change and its driving forces in Dulan County, Qinghai Province on the Tibetan Plateau during 1990–2000. The land use change was studied based on the landscape metrics change and transition matrix of land use types, while its driving forces were analyzed according to climatic changes and socioeconomic development. The study indicates that the increase of land use benefits was given great attention; however, the protection of arid environment did not attracted much attention. The study suggests that the land use should be based on the sustainable protection of arid environment on the Tibetan Plateau. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• Lulao catchment (LLC) is a small, homogeneous watershed on Guizhou Plateau, SW China. • Farmland soil (FS) has higher IRM 300mT /SIRM due to stronger pedogenesis in LLC. • Grassland soil (GS) has low IRM 300mT /SIRM & higher HIRM in LLC where a reservoir lies. • Contribution of FS vs GS to reservoir sediment is inferred with sediment's magnetism. • Changes in erosion is inferred as FS is distant from the reservoir than GS. This paper demonstrates that land use could enhance spatial discrimination of soil magnetism in a homogeneous watershed, and such differences help infer alterations in sediment sources and erosion. One sediment core was sampled from a reservoir built in 1958 and fifteen soil profiles from its catchment on the southern Guizhou Plateau, SW China. The whole watershed was covered by yellow earth developed on limestone. Magnetic measurements and granulometric analysis were performed on the soils and sediments while TOC and TN analysis on two soil profiles and 137Cs analysis on the sediment core. Information of seven years' land-use was derived from remote sensing images. The farmland and grassland soils had different magnetic characteristics while the downwards distributions of TOC and C/N were similar in the two profiles. The grassland soils had higher HIRM, lower χ fd % and IRM 300mT /SIRM. The higher χ fd % and IRM 300mT /SIRM of the farmland soils suggested stronger pedogenesis under cultivation. The average HIRM, χ fd % and IRM 300mT /SIRM were 38 and 334 10-6 A m2 kg−1, 5.7 and 3.6%, and 0.91 and 0.66 for the farmland and grassland soils. The farmland soils were finer probably due to tillage. The reservoir has been closely surrounded mainly by the grassland whereas the farmland, embedded with patches of the grassland, has occurred in the terrains relatively distant from the reservoir. The sediments of 1958–1985 had lower HIRM (156 10-6 A m2 kg−1) and higher IRM 300mT /SIRM (0.79), indicating greater contributions of the remote farmland soils mixed with grassland soils and stronger erosion. HIRM increased (229 10-6 A m2 kg−1) and IRM 300mT /SIRM decreased (0.67) in the sediments of 1985–2019, implying decreased distant-soil contributions and relatively increased input of the grassland soil closely around the reservoir. For mapping soil properties in three dimensions the simplest option is to choose a series of depth intervals, and to calibrate a two-dimensional (2-D) model for each interval. The alternative is to calibrate a full three dimensional (3-D) model that describes the variation in lateral and vertical direction. In 3-D modeling we must anticipate possible changes with depth of the effects of environmental covariates on the soil property of interest. This can be achieved by including interactions between the environmental covariates and depth. Also we must anticipate possible non-stationarity of the residual variance with depth. This can be achieved by fitting a 3-D correlation function, and multiplying the correlation between two points by the residual standard deviations at these two points that are a function of depth. In this paper various 3-D models of the natural logarithms of SOC are compared with 2-D depth-interval specific models. Five environmental covariates are used as predictors in modeling the lateral trend. In the 3-D models also depth was used as a predictor, either categorical, with categories equal to the depth intervals (3-Dcat), or continuous (3-Dcon). The covariance of the residuals in 3-D is modeled by a sum-metric covariance function. Both stationary and non-stationary variance models are fitted. In the non-stationary variance models the residual standard deviations are modeled either as a stepwise function or as a linear function of depth. In the 2-D models the regression coefficients differed largely between the depth intervals. In the 3-Dcat model extreme values for the regression coefficients were leveled out, and in the 3-Dcon model only the coefficients of NDVI and aspect changed with depth. The 3-Dcon model with a residual standard deviation that is a stepwise function of depth had the largest residual log-likelihood and smallest AIC among all 3-D models. Based on the cross-validation root mean squared error (RMSE) there was no single best model. Based on the mean and median of the standardized squared error (MSSE, MedSSE) the 2-D models outperformed all 3-D models. Overestimation of the prediction error variance by the kriging variance was less strong with the non-stationary variance models compared to the stationary variance models. 3-D modeling is required for realistic geostatistical simulation in spatial uncertainty analyses. Preparation of landslide susceptibility map is the first step for landslide hazard mitigation and risk assessment. The main aim of this study is to explore potential applications of two new models such as two-class Kernel Logistic Regression (KLR) and Alternating Decision Tree (ADT) for landslide susceptibility mapping at the Yihuang area (China). The ADT has not been used in landslide susceptibility modeling and this paper attempts a novel application of this technique. For the purpose of comparison, a conventional method of Support Vector Machines (SVM) which has been widely used in the literature was included and their results were assessed. At first, a landslide inventory map with 187 landslide locations for the study area was constructed from various sources. Landslide locations were then spatially randomly split in a ratio of 70/30 for building landslide models and for the model validation. Then a spatial database with a total of fourteen landslide conditioning factors was prepared, including slope, aspect, altitude, topographic wetness index (TWI), stream power index (SPI), sediment transport index (STI), plan curvature, landuse, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), lithology, distance to faults, distance to rivers, distance to roads, and rainfall. Using the KLR, the SVM, and the ADT, three landslide susceptibility models were constructed using the training dataset. The three resulting models were validated and compared using the receive operating characteristic (ROC), Kappa index, and five statistical evaluation measures. In addition, pairwise comparisons of the area under the ROC curve were carried out to assess if there are significant differences on the overall performance of the three models. The goodness-of-fits are 92.5% (the KLR model), 88.8% (the SVM model), and 95.7% (the ADT model). The prediction capabilities are 81.1%, 84.2%, and 93.3% for the KLR, the SVM, and the ADT models, respectively. The result shows that the ADT model yielded better overall performance and accurate results than the KLR and SVM models. The KLR model considered slightly better than SVM model in terms of the positive prediction values. The ADT and KLR are the two promising data mining techniques which might be considered to use in landslide susceptibility mapping. The stability evaluation of rainfall-induced landslides using a physical determination model supports disaster prevention, but it is mostly applied to the area with few landslides, and there is a lack of quantitative study on rainfall and landslide stability. This paper combined the Scoops3D model with the TRIGRS model (3D) to predict the shallow landslide spatiotemporal distribution and compared the simulation results with those of the TRIGRS model alone (1D), aiming to obtain more accurate assessment results. At the same time, the relationship between landslide stability and accumulative rainfall was quantitatively fitted to improve the real-time landslide prediction system. We applied the 1D and 3D models to the July 21, 2013 group-occurring landslide event (976 shallow landslides) in the Niangniangba basin, China. The required geotechnical parameters of both models were acquired by field and laboratory tests. We calculated the pressure head over time using the TRIGRS model based on practical rainfall data and predicted the shallow landslide stability using the Scoops3D model according to the resulting piezometric surface. We compared the landslide stability spatial distributions of the two models under initial and saturated conditions with the landslide catalogue. The success rate of landslides predicted by 3D model is 4.20% higher than 1D model. A composite index to quantitatively evaluate both models' performances indicates over-prediction by the 1D model in the stable region, while the 3D model more effectively predicts shallow landslides with a smaller unstable region. The relationship between instability proportion and accumulative rainfall in the 1D and 3D model can be represented by y = 24.57 x 0.18 and y = 11.59 x 0.33 , respectively. The 3D model shows more conservative result, and the rainfall threshold analysis proposed in this paper can provide reference for the time of most landslides in the case of insufficient data, which is an important indicator for disaster early warning and prediction. Contrasting landscape and climate settings generate different catenas for alpine steppe grasslands at Maduo (4200 m asl) and alpine meadow grasslands at Maqin (3750 m asl) on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. These place-based catenal models can be used as transferable archetypes in environmental management. Careful development of place-based catenal models and their application as transferable archetypes provides an integrative and generalisable framework for scientifically-informed approaches to environmental management. A workshop and field excursion to the Source Zone of the Yellow River in western China in July 2019 brought together local experts and a team of international researchers to co-develop cross-disciplinary, process-based catenal models that summarise controls on the character and behaviour of grassland environments in alpine meadow (3800 m asl) and alpine steppe (4200 m asl) landscapes. Water, sediment and nutrient fluxes, soil material properties, ground cover (especially percentage bare ground) and the role of small mammals (especially pika) are critical drivers of process linkages in the catenal models. Geologic, climatic and anthropogenic controls on these drivers vary in alpine steppe and alpine meadow settings. While these process interactions have supported grazing adapted ecosystems and sustained biodiversity values in this area for millennia, anthropogenic and climate change disturbances threaten the integrity of these landscapes and their capacity to provide ecosystem services and sustain livelihoods into the future. The place-based catenal models presented in this paper can be used to support applications that appropriately target key attributes, linkages and fluxes that may require conservation, maintenance or treatment in the management of alpine steppe and alpine meadow landscapes. Rill erosion is an important component of soil erosion, however, the process and mechanism of rill erosion on red soil slopes are not clear enough. In this paper, runoff scouring experiments were conducted with five varying inflow rates (8.5, 10, 11.5, 13, 14.5 L min−1 m−1) and one slope (8°) using two typical red soils in subtropical China: Ultisols derived from shale (UDS) and Ultisols derived from quaternary red clay (UDQ). The results showed that for the two red soils, runoff rate, sediment yield rate, and rill erosion amount were all positively correlated with inflow rates in linear relationships (p < 0.05). The high sand and low clay contents in eroded sediments were closely related to the original soil texture (dominated by clay and silt) and rill flow energy. Stream power and unit stream power were the optimal hydraulic parameters to characterize rill erosion mechanisms for UDS and UDQ , respectively. For UDQ with higher clay content and bulk density, the sediment yield process was more stable and the sand content in the eroded sediments was significantly higher than that of UDS , while the silt content was significantly lower. The rill flow of UDQ had slower velocity and larger Darcy–Weisbach resistance coefficient than that of UDS. For UDS with lower clay and higher sand content, the average sediment yield rate and rill depth were 2.26–4.71 and 2.79–6.53 times of UDQ , respectively, and the rill erodibility parameter was 1.84 times that of UDQ. • Sediment record of paleoflood event was well demonstrated by end-member (EM) model. • Paleoflood magnitude was reconstructed using a one-dimensional (1D) unsteady model. • Flood-frequency distribution curve was greatly improved by the paleoflood data. • An envelope curve for the maximum flood magnitudes along the upper Hanjiang River was first established. This paper provides an important archive of the largest paleoflood event along the Gold Gorge of the upper Hanjiang River, with a review of regional extraordinary flood magnitudes using historical, gauged, and paleoflood datasets. Paleoflood slackwater deposit (SWD) was identified using the sedimentological criteria and high-resolution physicochemical indexes. End-member model demonstrates the paleoflood SWD was dominated by sand component. Optical chronology indicates the paleoflood event was dated to 1000–900 a BP, corresponding to the North Song Dynasty (AD 960–1127). Paleoflood magnitudes derived from one-dimensional unsteady model vary between 23,000 and 34,000 m3/s. The paleoflood data provide a good representation of extraordinary flood event with a 10,000-years return period and greatly improve current flood frequency estimations. Moreover, the envelope curve for extraordinary floods was first established as Q = 50D0.65 and the paleoflood peak discharges are approximately 2–2.5 times of the largest gauged floods within the catchment. These results provide an upper limit of the maximum flood magnitudes along the upper Hanjiang River and also expand our understanding of rare and large magnitude floods in the middle Yangtze River valley. • A novel approach reveal of the failure mechanism of slopes in tunnel environment. • The failure process is divided into five stages based on failure characteristics. • Tunnel is an important inducement of loess slope failure in tunnel environment. As a unique geological hazard, the occurrence of loess tunnels is closely related to slope failures. However, almost no research on the relationship between loess slope failures and tunnel erosions has been presented, which seriously restricts the deep understanding of the genesis mechanism and evolution process of loess slope failures. This paper focuses on revealing the failure mechanism of loess slopes in tunnel environments via methods including field investigation, exploration, field water injection tests, tracking tests and numerical simulations. The results show that the whole process of permeability coefficient of the soil layer in the test site is divided into three stages: the rapidly decreasing stage, the slowly decreasing stage and then the stable stage; the slope failure process is divided into five stages based on different failure characteristics: the soaking and softening stage, the erosion connecting stage, the slope local failure stage, the slump failure stage and the resting stage. Seepage has a great influence on loess slope failures in the tunnel environment, and it is as an important inducement of failure, while tunnels themselves play an aggravating catalytic role. The soil water interaction is shown to be an important internal cause of slope failure both by field tests and numerical simulations. The existence of tunnels is not conducive to the overall stability of the slope as tunnels expand the influence range of the soil-water interactions. • Delayed channel evolution was revealed at multi-temporal scales. • Retrogressive aggradation migrated upstream beyond the backwater zone. • Conditions in previous ∼4 years cumulatively impact current channel evolution. The delayed response of channel evolution upstream of dams to base-level changes has not yet been thoroughly understood. In this paper, we studied the delayed response of the morphological adjustment at the middle Yellow and lower Wei Rivers upstream of the Sanmenxia Dam, China, based on data of water volume, sediment load, cross-sectional profiles, and erosion/deposition volumes during 1960–2018. Channel evolution upstream of the dam obviously lagged behind the dynamic pool level fluctuation during the first approximately two decades following dam closure, when retrogressive aggradation/erosion phases were identified. The retrogressive aggradation migrated ∼200 km upstream to the tributary of the Yellow River, i.e., the Wei River. The impact of base-level rise may propagate backwards behind the beginning of the backwater reach, reflecting indirect backwater effects. The dam has been operated by the controlled release of "storing the clear water during nonflood seasons and discharging the turbid water during flood seasons" since 1974, and the reservoir has generally been eroded during flood seasons and aggraded during nonflood seasons. The erosion center was defined as the subreach between two adjacent cross-sections with the greatest erosion rate during the flood season, and the aggradation center was defined as that with the greatest aggradation rate during the nonflood season. The results showed that the erosion/deposition centers migrated towards the dam by ∼50–60 km during 1974–2010 and migrated upstream after ∼2010. The location of the erosion/deposition centers was related not only to the water and sediment conditions and backwater length in the current year but also to these conditions in the previous ∼4 years, reflecting the delayed response of channel adjustment or the cumulative impact of pervious conditions on channel morphology. The farming-pastoral region of North China is a region that has suffered from serious desertification, and the multiple transitional characteristics in this region make it very difficult to link the progress of desertification to the driving forces behind it. This paper mainly focuses on the dynamics of desertification over the past 10 years and their relationship to climate change and human activity. According to the MODIS images in 2000 and 2010, the farming-pastoral region had experienced significant desertification dynamics over the past 10 years. The area of regions that had undergone desertification reversion and expansion were 186,240 km 2 and 199,525 km 2 respectively, and the spatial distribution of these regions showed great heterogeneity. The relationship between desertification dynamics and their driving forces was investigated by comparing the change in the NPP that was induced by climate change and human activity for each pixel that experienced desertification reversion and expansion. From 2000 to 2010, the coupling of climate change and human activity was the dominant factor behind desertification reversion. However, the human activity was the dominant factor that controlled the desertification expansion process between 2000 and 2010. The driving processes of desertification also had considerable spatial heterogeneity, and the dominant factors behind desertification reversion and expansion in each sub-region were not completely the same. • Studies of Holocene soil water content could provide valuable results in water cycle. • The Holocene loess and paleosol in China is the ideal soil water research strata. • The Holocene cultural development in the study area is related to the climate change. In this paper, changes in the Holocene climate, soil water and soil resources in Southern Loess Plateau are studied based on field investigation, grain size and chemical analysis. The purpose is to reveal the impact of the Holocene environmental change on soil water and human activities. The study shows that the mid-Holocene paleosol S 0 in Baoji Region had a CaCO 3 content close to 0, was enriched with Fe 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 , was of homogenous dense silty microstructure containing red argillans and had moderate chemical weathering. This shows that the paleosol is luvisol. The mean annual precipitation was about 800 mm at that time. The late-Holocene loess had a high CaCO 3 content, low Fe 2 O 3 and Al 2 O 3 content and of pore-developed crumb microstructure, indicating that the climate was cold and dry. The migration depth of CaCO 3 and Sr in the mid-Holocene paleosol indicates that the distribution depth of gravity water in the soil at that time reached 1.8 m, and the water content in the soil above 1.8 m during the vegetation growing season was higher than 20%. This made it suitable for the development of forest vegetation. The migration depth of CaCO 3 in the Holocene loess was small and the water content in the layers of loess during rainy season was generally lower than 12%; thus, it was not suitable for the development of forest vegetation. In the mid-Holocene soil, water intake was greater than water consumption and soil water was positive balance. Moreover, trace elements, organic matters, water holding capacity and water content in S 0 were higher than those in the early-Holocene and late-Holocene loess, which facilitated agricultural production and human activities. In fact, it is also the primary reason that the mid-Holocene village sites are significantly larger in quantity and greater in scale than the early-Holocene and late-Holocene village sites. • A typical and common herbaceous plant of Neyraudia reynaudiana roots was selected as the research objective. • The effect of both moisture content and root density to root-soil complex are discussed. • Roots could enhance the soil shear strength mainly reflected in the increase of cohesive force. • Moisture content was introduced into the shear strength model of root-soil complex. The collapse of collapsing walls is a key process during the Benggang development in southeast China and is closely related to the soil shear strength. Plant root reinforcement can effectively improve the soil shear strength. However, there are few studies on the effect of roots on the soil shear strength of collapsing walls. To explore the influence of roots on the soil shear strength of collapsing walls, the roots of Neyraudia reynaudiana was selected as the research object. This paper studies the tensile properties of the roots through root tensile tests and performs a direct shear test to study the influence of the roots on the soil shear strength by setting different mass moisture contents (15%∼30%) and root weight densities (0 ∼ 1.25 g 100 cm−3). Root tensile force is positively correlated with root diameter by a power function, while tensile strength is negatively correlated with diameter by a power function. Roots could increase the soil shear strength, and which was mainly reflected in cohesive force. The shear strength and cohesive force increase first then decrease with the increasing root density, while root density has no effect on the internal friction. The shear strength, cohesive force and internal friction of root-soil complex all decreased with increasing moisture content. The WWM (Wu and Waldron model) greatly overestimated the cohesion of herbaceous roots, and a new prediction model of the shear strength of root-soil composites was obtained by revising the WWM model by introducing the moisture content and root density (NSE = 0.94). In conclusion, Neyraudia reynaudiana roots could improve the soil shear strength, whereas the strengthening effect decreased under the condition of high moisture content. Quantifying the effects of freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) on the erodibility of saline soils is challenging because of the abundant soluble salt content and complex soil mechanical responses. In this study, direct shear tests, disintegration tests, and scanning electron microscopy were conducted to investigate the effects of freeze-thaw action on the erodibility indicators (shear strength and disintegration velocity) of soda-saline loessal soils and their microscopic deterioration mechanisms. Four initial moisture contents (IMCs: 8%, 13%, 18%, 23%), three soluble salt contents (SSCs: 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%), and six FTCs (0, 1, 3, 6, 10, 15) were considered. The results showed that successive FTCs continued to degrade the erosion resistance of the soil until it stabilized after approximately 10 FTCs. After 15 FTCs, the shear strength and cohesion decreased by 8.6–19.8% and 24.1–59.2%, respectively, while the angle of internal friction was relatively unaffected. Meanwhile, the soil disintegration velocity increased by 52.3–208.8%. During the freeze-thaw process, the water-ice phase change and the crystallization of soluble salts both led to the continuous adjustment of the microstructure of soda-saline loessal soils. It was found that microcracks within the soil structural units increased significantly, cementation between the structural units weakened continuously, pore connectivity was enhanced, and pore size homogenization increased. Correlation analysis showed that IMC was the fundamental factor affecting the soil mechanical properties, whereas SSC mainly affected the soil's resistance to disintegration. Previous studies have focused on coastline changes of the mainland in China; thus changes of island coastlines have not been well investigated. In this study, the coastlines of the continent and islands of the Pearl River Estuary from 1978 to 2018 were extracted and analyzed by integrating Canny edge detection and Otsu methods based on Landsat data, and the coastline was classified into six types including biological, sandy, muddy, estuarine, rocky, and artificial via visual interpretation. The coastline length, coastline change rate and change area were calculated and analyzed for the 40 years period. The precision test showed that the coastline extraction methods presented in this paper meet the accuracy standard. The coastline length of the Pearl River Estuary was found to have increased rapidly from 789 km in 1978 to 979 km in 2018. During the past four decades, a large proportion of natural coastline converted into artificial one (66% in 2018), while 577 km2 land increased in this area. The coastline of the western PRE demonstrates more rapid change rates than that of the eastern part, and more land reclamation has occurred in the western area. Between 1988 and 1997, the coastline length and area of reclamation experienced the most extensive changes. Both natural factors, including sediment transport, sea-level rise, wind, tide, as well as anthropogenic factors, such as land reclamation and dam construction, have impacted coastline variation of the Pearl River Estuary in the past four decades. In general, the western part of the study area showed more remarkable coastline change and experienced the enormous influence of land reclamation, dam construction and sediment transport, compared with the eastern part. • The Random Naïve Bayes (RNB) was developed to evaluate the flood susceptibility. • A repeatedly random sampling method was adopted to select negative samples for RNB. • The RNB-based most accurate classifier can achieve better classification performance. • The framework can generate stable flood susceptibility maps. • RNB is a feasible approach for natural susceptibility assessment study. Random Naïve Bayes (RNB) is a machine learning method that uses the Random Forest (RF) structure to optimize Naïve Bayes (NB). It is interesting to see whether RNB could optimize NB and achieve satisfied assessment results like RF in the flood susceptibility assessment study. RNB has rarely been used in study of using machine learning methods to spatially analyze natural disasters, and thus it was selected as the analysis method. Based on the data feasibility, 12 spatial factors that affect the occurrence and spatial distribution of floods were selected. To avoid the influence of subjective equal-interval classification method, natural breaks and quantile method were used to discretize factors with continuous values, respectively. Here, a recently proposed repeatedly random sampling method was adopted to select negative samples for RNB to generate a most accurate classifier (MAC) that was employed to compute the probability of flood occurrence in the study area. Consequently, this paper adopted the integrated framework of GIS and RNB to spatially assess the flood susceptibility using the Wanan County in China as an instance. The results demonstrated that when integrated with the repeatedly random sampling method, the MAC-based flood susceptibility maps corresponding to different factor discretization methods were similar, meaning this framework can effectively avoid the effects caused by different factor discretization methods. Also, to testify the classification performance of RNB, RF and NB were chosen to compare the classification performance with it. The results indicated the classification performance in the order of RF > RNB > NB. This means RNB is able to achieve better classification performance than NB, but it exists limitations when compared with traditional strong classifiers like RF. • The near-dam region contributed 10.8% of the total sediment into the reservoir. • Sedimentation mainly occurred in bending, branching and near-dam reaches. • The key factor influencing sedimentation was the incoming sediment load. • New formulas were proposed to calculate sediment trapping efficiency. Sedimentation in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) affects flood control, navigation, power generation and the ecological environment. We present a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of sedimentation in the TGR from 2003 to 2018. The data set includes field measurements (runoff and sediment) at hydrological stations and estimation for areas where measured data are not available. Based on the data set, the amount of sedimentation in the TGR was calculated with the Sediment Budget Model (SBM) and Section Topography Method (STM). Finally, the variation in sediment Trapping Efficiency (TE) in the TGR was assessed. The results indicate that sediment from smaller tributaries in the TGR region, which has been ignored in most previous studies, constituted approximately 10.8% of the total incoming sediment. The total sedimentation in the TGR was 205478 × 104 t in 2003–2018, and the contribution rates of sediment load flowing into the TGR, the water depth in front of the dam, and runoff discharge flowing into the TGR were 94.4%, 24.5% and −18.9% respectively. The average annual TE was 78.5% in 2003–2018, and it was closely related to the ratio of reservoir storage capacity to flow discharge in the flood season and to sediment concentration in the non-flood season. • Pedodiversity was higher in southern China than northern China. • Analysis unit sizes had little effect on spatial pattern analysis of pedodiversity. • Overall, parent material and topography were major driving factors of pedodiversity. Knowledge of pedodiversity is essential for the protection and management of soil resources. The analysis of regional pedodiversity is typically based on analysis units of different sizes. However, the effect of analysis unit size on regional pedodiversity studies remains unclear. In this paper, the effects of analysis unit size on the studies of spatial distribution characteristics of pedodiversity and its major driving factor in China were studied based on two levels of geomorphological regions. A combined method encompassing the moving window, soil richness, and Shannon index was used to analyze the spatial distribution pattern of pedodiversity in China. A geographical detector was used to determine a major driving factor of pedodiversity in each geomorphological region. The spatial distribution pattern of pedodiversity based on two levels of geomorphological regions both showed that pedodiversity was highest in southern China, followed by northern China, and lowest in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which indicated that analysis unit sizes had little effect on the study on spatial distribution pattern of pedodiversity. The major driving factor analysis of pedodiversity based on first-order geomorphological regions showed that the major driving factor in China, except for the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, was parent material. However, the results based on second-order geomorphological regions showed that the major driving factors of pedodiversity, except for the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, were parent material and topography in hilly regions, topography in mountainous regions, and parent material in regions occupied by alluvial landforms, aeolian landforms, or karst landforms. The driving factor analysis of pedodiversity based on the two levels of geomorphological regions suggested that the effect of the analysis unit sizes on the major driving factor study was significant. Lakes and wetlands in populated areas have become very vulnerable to pollution and habitat degradation, seriously threatening regional ecological security and socio-economic development. Exploring long-term environmental changes in these systems is essential to reveal the interactions of human activities and catchments, and further to provide valuable reference for current restoration. In this paper, we present paleolimnological data from a short sedimentary core from Liangzi Lake, a typical wetland nature reserve in the middle and lower Yangtze River Basin, China. Multiple sedimentary proxies (principally pollen but also geochemistry and grain size data) combined with historical records were used to establish environmental changes of Liangzi Lake, in both terrestrial and lacustrine aspects, over the last 150 years. Despite the influence of hydrological processes to some extent, our results indicate that the anthropogenic effects (negative and positive) are well recorded by the sedimentary records. The landscape changes of the wider Liangzi Lake wetland can be placed into four stages: less disturbed background (before the 1950s), hydrological regulation (1950s–1960s), intensive reclamation (1970s–1990s), and wetland restoration (starting in the late 1990s). Agriculture and hydrological control were the most important factors in transforming the wetland landscapes, as well as the aquatic ecosystem. The changes in the lake itself could be divided into three main stages: low nutrient levels and unstable hydrologic condition with dominant emergent plants (before the 1960s), rising nutrient levels and a stable water environment with increasing submerged plants (1960s–1990s), and high nutrient and pollution levels with the subsequent adjustment and restoration (after the late 1990s). Our study provides a comprehensive history of environmental changes of a typical inland lake and its surrounding wetland, and may contribute to future wetland conservation in similar regions, as well as pollen-based environmental reconstruction studies. Cropland conversion is a significant theme of the influence of human activities on ecological systems and global food security. Conventionally, cropland conversion in China has been deemed to match the dynamic balance of cropland resources well and to ensure food security for the whole country. However, local studies have presented some conflicting signs that call for an integrated analysis from a national viewpoint. In this paper, by considering the significance of slope in cropland-related natural and socioeconomic issues, we explore the slope features of China's cropland conversion during 2000–2015 and endeavor to identify some potential risks hidden in the process. High-resolution remotely sensed images, digital elevation model and spatial analytical methods are adopted to conduct the analysis. The results show that, the features of cropland conversion in diverse slope division areas are all distinct. Some risks indicated by these conversion features can be identified as follows: (1) unsuitable reclamation of cropland in flat areas causes ecological damage, (2) the invasion of sparsely populated construction land on cropland in steep areas has a dramatic impact on the local area, (3) excessive greening in Northwest and Northeast China, and insufficient greening in Southwest China are not healthy for regional sustainability, (4) cropland's upslope reclamation and downslope loss pose potential risks for food security. In the context of dynamic balance management and other related national policies, cropland conversion in China is not as optimistic as former surveys have indicated, and promoted measures should be elaborately adjusted based on local conditions. Abstract: This paper analyzes runoff and soil loss in relation to the rainfall regimes and land use changes in a small mountainous watershed in the Three Gorges Area (TGA) of China. Based on 10years of rainfall measurements and K-means clustering, 152 rainfall events were classified into three rainfall regimes. The mean statistical features of different rainfall regimes display a marked difference. Rainfall Regime I is events of medium amounts (31.8mm) and medium duration (1371min). Rainfall Regime II is events with high amounts (54.0mm), long duration (2548min), and an infrequent occurrence. Rainfall Regime III is events of low amount (22.2mm), short duration (494min) and high frequency. Each rainfall regime results in differing levels of runoff and erosion and Rainfall Regime I causes the greatest proportion of accumulated discharge (368.7mm) and soil loss (4283t). In the different rainfall regimes, the values of the mean runoff coefficient and the mean sediment load were ordered as follows: Rainfall Regime II>Rainfall Regime I>Rainfall Regime III. These results suggest that greater attention should be paid to Rainfall Regimes I and II because they had the most erosive effect. In the Wangjiaqiao watershed, the changes in land use primarily affected the paddy fields, where the cropland decreased significantly and the forest and orchards increased by 9.9% and 7.7%, respectively, during 1995–2004. The ANOVA shows land use changes caused significant decreasing trends in the runoff coefficients (P<0.01) and sediment loads (P<0.01). In order, the most sensitive response of runoff and erosion to land use was Rainfall Regime II>Rainfall Regime>Rainfall Regime III. Rainfall characteristics are decisive for the relative importance of different storm runoff generation mechanisms. Abstract: Vegetation is widely used for controlling shallow landslides. The mechanisms by which roots increase apparent soil cohesion is well documented and many values of root additional cohesion are available in the literature for different plant species. However, less information is given about the spatial variation of soil reinforcement by roots at a slope scale and its influence on slope stability, in particular in forest areas. The goal of this paper is to describe the spatial variability of root additional cohesion on two monospecific 17-y-old stands of Robinia pseudoacacia and Platycladus orientalis grown on slopes in the semiarid Loess Plateau of China, and to analyze numerically the effect of this variability on slopes stability. For this purpose, vertical trenches were dug at different distance and directions around trees situated at three different slope locations, i.e. up-, mid- and down-slope. Grids with a 10×10cm mesh were placed on vertical walls. Roots were counted within each grid cell and split according to their diameter class. Root area ratio (RAR) was estimated and compared among different positions around the trees and at three different locations along the slope. Roots tensile strength was determined with laboratory mechanical tests. RAR and root tensile strength were used as inputs in six different root reinforcement models to calculate root additional cohesion. A 2D finite element model of slope stability was developed and used to calculate the increase in factor of safety (FoS) due to root additional cohesion on rectilinear and terraced slopes. Results showed that both root tensile strength and Young''s modulus of R. pseudoacacia was about two times higher than tensile strength of P. orientalis. RAR distribution had a strong relationship with local soil moisture content measured in July during the raining season, and was significantly different with regards to tree location on the slope. The six theoretical models used to estimate the root additional cohesion gave different vertical profiles of root reinforcement distribution according to the underlying hypothesis on how forces are transferred to the roots. Theoretical analyses of slope stability showed that terraced slopes were 20% more stable than rectilinear slopes, disregarding the differences in hydrological regimes between these two terrain morphologies. Numerical sensitivity analyses also showed that the FoS reached an asymptotic value when increasing root additional cohesion. Actual additional cohesions of the two studied sites corresponded to FoS that were already close to this asymptotic values. Consequently variations of these actual root cohesions would not much affect slope stability. However it was showed that more attention should be given to the reinforcement of the bottom part of the actual slopes, where roots have a larger positive impact on the FoS. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The suspended sediment deposition (SSD) in the alluvial reach between the Qingtongxia station and the Toudaoguai station of the upper Yellow River has shown a dramatic variation since 1952. However, its spatial and temporal changing pattern and driving factors are still not clear. This paper examines the detailed spatial and temporal variations of the SSD based on the annual suspended sediment load at five gaging stations located in this alluvial reach in 1952–2007. The mean annual SSDs in four sub-reaches (Qingtongxia–Shizuishan, Shizuishan–Bayangaole, Bayangaole–Sanhuhekou, and Sanhuhekou–Toudaoguai) were calculated and analyzed for different periods. The mean annual kilometric SSDs in 1952–2007 were −0.228∗105, 0.97∗105, 0.165∗105 and 0.006∗105 ta−1 km−1 in the four sub-reaches, respectively, with the highest SSD occurred in the Shizuishan–Bayangaole sub-reach. Results also suggested that SSD was mainly accumulated in 1952–1959 before major reservoirs were constructed and in 1986–2007 after three major reservoirs (Qingtongxia, Liujiaxia and Longyangxia) were constructed in the main stream. During 1960–1985, all sub-reaches except the Shizuishan–Bayangaole sub-reach experienced channel erosion. Although climate change may play some roles, the changes in SSD were mainly influenced by human activities. In particular, the water and soil conservation actions, such as the construction of check dams from 1958 in upper stream tributaries, intercepted significant amount of suspended sediment and cause the net erosion of the main channel in the 1960s. The operation of the Qingtongxia reservoir reduced the SSD in this downstream reach in the 1970s and 1980s because upper stream suspended sediment was trapped by the reservoir and reservoir-released relative clear water scoured the downstream channel. Although the Liujiaxia and Longyangxia reservoirs trapped relatively small amount of suspended sediment, they stored a large amount of water during the flood season, reducing the discharge and the erosion capability of the downstream flow. Therefore, this operation mode may increase the SSD in this river reach. In addition, with the gradual loss of the Qingtongxia reservoir''s capacity in sediment storage, more suspended sediment was released to the downstream channel, causing strong SSD in this reach after 1990. Abstract: Heavy metal contamination of bottom sediments of the Changjiang River is widely reported, however, the potential source and methods of transportation of these heavy metals in the contaminated sediments is poorly defined. This paper examines the correlation between heavy metals and geochemical indices, including Fe2O3, Al2O3, total organic carbon (TOC) and black carbon (BC), as well as magnetic susceptibility (MS). Using these indices we investigate the contamination characteristics of heavy metals in the sediments by with Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Results from 83 sediment samples collected in the lower reach of Changjiang River (from Nanjing to Shanghai) show that the first principal component accounts for 52.23% of the total variance, corresponding to the heavy metals, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn, and conservative components of Fe2O3, Al2O3 and TOC. This result indicates that heavy metal distributions are controlled by the transportation and sedimentation of fine particles which is also confirmed by particle size analysis. The second principal component explains 24.81% of the variance and is dominated by Cd, Pb and MS, which, collectively, result chiefly from industrial and transportation activities and, for MS, fly ash production. The third principal component accounts for 7.91% of the variance and corresponds solely to Hg. Principal component analysis/multiple linear regression (PCA/MLR) was used to estimate the contribution of the three principal components to each heavy metal. PCA/MLR results suggest that more than 50% of Co, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn were influenced by the particle size effect. Particle size effect and fly ash account for 37.1% and 27.7% of As. Cd and Pb were mainly explained by fly ash. 98.9% of Hg was related to PC3, which represented black carbon (BC). Our study indicates that the combination of geochemical and multivariable statistical methods clearly characterizes the geochemistry of heavy metals in sediment of the lower reaches of the Changjiang River and suggests that power plants are the main source of heavy metal pollution. Abstract: Long-term changes to the Yellow River delta in China have received considerable attention not only because of the growing economic importance of the delta region but also because they provide a clear example of the dominant role played by anthropogenic effects upon a large dynamic river delta. This paper presents a detailed study on the morphological consequences of reduction in river sediment load and influence of human activities based on sediment load data at three gauging stations in the upper, middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River basin from 1950 to 2007. The results indicate that sediment loads at all three gauging stations display a gradually decreasing trend over the past 58years. The primary reason for this decrease is shown to be due to various human activities, including the construction of Longyangxia and Liujiaxia reservoirs in the upper reaches, water–soil conservation practices and the commissioning of Sanmenxia and Xiaolangdi reservoirs in the middle reaches. It is estimated that water–soil conservation practices which are a major factor to the decrease of sediment load at Huayuankou gauging station account for 40% of the total amount of reduction, sediment trapping by Sanmenxia and Xiaolangdi reservoirs account for 30% of the total amount of reduction and the 10% decrease is caused by human activities in the upper reaches. The remaining 20% decrease is attributed to precipitation decrease. The reduction of sediment load has directly impacted on the lower Yellow River and the delta region, causing alternate changes between siltation and scouring in the lower river channel along with an increased rate of erosion over the whole Yellow River delta. Abstract: This paper outlines an analysis of the spatial distribution of sediment production, delivery and yield in the Xihanshui River basin, South Gansu, China, using the modelling tools of SedNet (Prosser et al., 2001). This model can assess the delivery efficiency to downstream locations, as well as identifying locations with high rates of sediment production. Preliminary model experiments assist understanding of the spatial dynamics of these sediment processes and evaluation of the effectiveness of soil conservation practices since the mid-1980s. Three scenario years (dry, average and wet) from the 1983–2005 record are identified and modelled, and land use and management are represented in the model to reflect known changes since the 1980s. Results show hillslope erosion to be a dominant source of sediment supply, causing the latter to decrease ten-fold between 1984 and 1997/2000. Estimated bank erosion and floodplain deposition rates are sensitive to parameter values, but bank erosion appears less sensitive than hillslope supply to rainfall. The model can be used to assess net changes in floodplain storage; for default parameters, floodplain deposition rates are 25–200 times the rates of bank erosion depending on the climate scenario. Comparing simulation results with measured sediment yields at the three gauging stations indicates encouraging agreement in 2000. In 1984 (the wet year), the model under-predicts, suggesting that additional unmodelled sediment production processes, especially mass movement and gully erosion, may be important in wet years. Mass movement inventory data could close the gap between the high yields measured in the wet scenario year and the estimated yield due to hillslope erosion alone. In 1997 (the dry year), the model over-predicts; this suggests that the land use change parameters required to reflect the effects of conservation may not have been sufficient, implying that conservation has been generally effective, and that evidence of declining sediment yield is not simply a reflection of drier conditions. Abstract: Draining toward the South China Sea, the Pearl River is the third largest river in China. Based on datasets begun in the 1950s of water and sediment flux at the main gauging stations and measured deposition rates in some reservoirs, this paper examines the impact of dam construction on the sediment flux of the Pearl River. The results and conclusions are as follows: (1) The total storage capacity of reservoirs in the Pearl River basin had reached 65 km3 by 2005, which is 23% of the annual water discharge of the Pearl River. (2) The total deposition rate in the reservoirs has now probably reached 600 Mt/yr, one order of magnitude higher than the annual sediment flux into the sea (40 Mt/yr in 2000–2005). (3) The sediment flux of the Pearl River has shown a drastically decreasing trend since the mid-1980s, which is attributed mainly to deposition in the reservoirs. (4) A further decrease in sediment flux into the sea is expected to occur in the Pearl River in future decades because of the construction of new dams. This drastic decrease in sediment flux may be very import for the environments of the river channel, the estuary and the coastal areas, which need to paid considerable attention in scientific research and management. The Shijiahe Culture (ca. 4800–4100 yr BP), which originated in the middle Yangtze Basin, was a milestone of prehistoric Chinese civilization. To reveal the interactions between climatic changes and human activities during this time interval, the geochronology and multiple proxies (pollen and heavy metals) of samples from a 220-cm-deep outer wall at the Sanfangwan Site (a typical site of the Shijiahe Culture) were analyzed. Radiocarbon dating indicates that the age range of the Sanfangwan Site is ca. 4800 to 4100 cal. yr BP. From ca. 4800 to 4600 cal. yr BP (the early Shijiahe Culture), pollen assemblages were dominated by Gramineae and an anthropogenic plant community (e.g. Ranunculaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Labiatae, and Cruciferae), indicating an expansion in rice agriculture during this interval. High metal concentrations in the same interval indicate a large flux of metals from smelting and farming activities. Between ca. 4600 and 4100 cal. yr BP (the middle and late Shijiahe Culture), decreases in Gramineae and anthropogenic pollen mirrored the recession of farming. Concurrent decreases in heavy metals may be attributable to a decline in the smelting industry. Three episodes of high pollen concentrations and visible increases in hygrophyte pollen, Pinus pollen, and fern spores at 4600–4550, 4450–4350, and 4200–4100 cal. yr BP probably indicate the occurrence of several flooding events during the middle and late Shijiahe Culture, resulting in the migration of local inhabitants. • The induced factors of the Baige landslide are comprehensively investigated. • The Baige landslide is caused by deep-seated gravitational slope deformation. • River downcutting is a prerequisite for the evolution of the Baige landslide. • Earthquake contributes to accelerating the development of the Baige landslide. On October 11 and November 3, 2018, two successive landslides happened at the same location near Baige Village in Tibet of China and dammed the Jinsha River twice. The induced factors and formation mechanism of the Baige landslide are still being questioned. In this paper, high-resolution topographic data, multi-temporal remote sensing images (including the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) 3D image, remote sensing, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) techniques), rainfall data, seismic records, comprehensive field investigations, and numerical simulations are used to identify the main characteristics, the induced factors, and the formation mechanism of the event. The results show that deep-seated gravitational slope deformations play an important role in the evolution process of the Baige landslide; river downcutting is a prerequisite for the progressive evolution of the gravitational slope deformation behavior of the Baige landslide, whereas earthquake plays a catalytic role in the development of the gravitational slope deformation of the Baige landslide. The responding mechanism of wetland ecosystem to climate change is currently unclear due to a lack of long-term records incorporating multiple ecological factors. This paper presents a well-dated and multi-proxy cored record from a natural freshwater wetland developed in a paleo-pingo-related depression on the Sanjiang Plain. The study aims to reconstruct the wetland water-level and vegetational regimes during the past ~6.0 ka BP and discuss the wetland evolution response to the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) circulation. The results show that a shallow-water lake with hygrophilous herbs developed in the depression with a strong EASM during ~6.0–4.5 ka BP. The paleolake was succeeded by a wetland with a lowered mean water level and an increase in tree cover controlled by the weakened EASM during the past 4.5 ka BP. Such an ecological lake-to-wetland transition corresponds well to the sharp decline of the EASM around 4.5 ka BP which has been well documented in various geological records across the EASM domain. During the wetland developing stage over the past 4.5 ka BP, the water-level and vegetational changes in the studied depression were also closely related to the EASM variations. The strengthened EASM usually generated higher water levels with more hygrophilous herbs around 4.0 ka BP, 3.5 ka BP, 3.0 ka BP, 2.0 ka BP, and 1.3 ka BP. Considering the prevalent EASM climate serving as the predominant water supply for the wetlands on the modern Sanjiang Plain, we suggest the EASM circulation has played a critical role in driving the wetland ecological evolution during the mid-to-late Holocene Epoch. The past 0.4 ka BP is an exception as the local Trees/Herbs ratio visibly increased with the declined water level, while the monsoonal precipitation shows no equivalent shift. Abstract: The Stochastic generation of storm patterns is often necessary for driving process-based hydrological and ecological models. CLIGEN is the only weather generator being able to generate internal storm patterns. Its goodness needs to be evaluated for its proper application. This paper aims to find the advantages and limitations of CLIGEN on semiarid areas and provide references for custom-built weather generators for the Loess Plateau. The daily rainfall time series (1957–2002) and breakpoint rainfall data (more than 20 years) on six stations on the Loess Plateau were used to estimate input parameters for CLIGEN and to compare with CLIGEN-generated 50 years of storm data. Precipitation occurrence (wet day and dry day sequence) is well-simulated without significant difference across months and sites. Errors of monthly average number of wet days range from −0.67 to 1.08 days, standard deviations range from −1.19 to 0.76 days, and the distributions of continuous number of wet and dry days on the semiarid Loess Plateau are adequately simulated. Daily rainfall amount is not simulated as well as precipitation occurrence. The relative errors of average daily rainfall range from −12.93% to 8.64% and those of standard deviations range from −21.35% to 27.46%. During the rain seasons (May–September), among 30 month–location combinations, all the Mann–Whitney tests for the means passed, 47% for squared ranks tests rejected the null hypothesis of equality of standard deviations, and 73% for K–S test suggested that the generated and measured distributions of daily rainfall were different at 0.01 level of significance Three variables to describe internal storm patterns in CLIGEN are storm duration, relative peak intensity, and time to peak. Storm duration was not well-reproduced because none of squared ranks tests and K–S test passed at the significance level of 0.01. The frequency of short duration storms (<300 min) was over-predicted while frequency of long duration storms (400–1200 min) was significantly under-predicted. The distribution of maximum 5 min rainfall intensity (ip5) was well-simulated for four sites out of the six because all tests passed. However, generated maximum ip5 for all six sites are around 190 mm/h, which are much larger than the measured (70 to 150 mm/h). Ip30 is simulated better than ip5, suggesting that CLIGEN can reliably generate rainfall erosivity. Time to peak was well-simulated because all the tests passed with P values significantly greater than the significance level of P =0.01. Improvement for CLIGEN has to be made in terms of the daily rainfall simulation in rainfall-concentrated seasons and storm pattern generation in order to generate reliable rainfall time series on the Loess plateau. Abstract: The presence and condition of roadways control the utilization of natural resources, which are associated with direct and indirect impacts on soil erosion in undeveloped countries. This paper addresses the relationship between soil erosion and distance to roadways in Xingguo County, an undeveloped area in Jiangxi Province of South China, for four time periods, 1958, 1975, 1982, and 2000. Soil erosion maps for each time period were interpreted using remote sensing and GIS technology for buffer zones four kilometers wide, subdivided into eight strips, each 0.5 kilometers wide, which were located alongside various types of road classes, namely trunk, town, village, and unpaved. The distribution patterns of various types of erosion were identified by GIS overlay of buffer strips and soil erosion maps. Results demonstrate that soil erosion cases found in buffer zones along both sides of trunk and town roads are the most severe, and areas with severe erosion decrease as distance from the strip to the road increases. However, moderate and slight erosion cases only have a minor relationship to the strip to road distance. There are more severe erosion cases than moderate and light erosion cases alongside village and unpaved roads, but the total area is not distinctly different from moderate and slight erosion cases, and severe erosion cases tend to decrease with an increase in the strip to road distance. Also, areas with severe erosion differentiated by time periods in the strips alongside roadways of all classes, except trunk roads, rank from highest to lowest as follows: 1975, 1958, 1982, and 2000. Notably, severe erosion areas in 1975, 1958 and 1982 are all quite extensive. Soil erosion alongside roadways of various classes is impacted jointly by historical policy, distance to roadways, and landscape. In undeveloped countries and areas, much more attention should be paid to the impacts of road construction, specifically soil erosion associated with road edge construction, and relevant measures for forest resource conservation should be formulated before initiating road construction projects. Abstract: Only few studies have focused on quantifying and/or modeling changes in gully-head shape. The present paper proposed a non-linear technique based on fractal method for describing gully-head changes quantitatively, and carried out a case study in the Yuanmou Basin in the Longchuan River Valley, Yunnan Province, southwest China. Seventy-seven gullies under 5 different land-uses were investigated in 1998 and again in 2002. For the study period, the gully-head retreat rate in different land-uses showed a decreasing order BL (bare land)>FL (farmland for only crops)>OC (mixture of orchards and crops)>FG (combination of forest and grass)>FSG (combination of forest, shrubs and grass). Correspondingly, the three proposed fractal characteristics (the fractal curvature P τ , ΔP τ =change in the fractal curvature P τ , ΔD =change in the fractal dimension D) of the gully-heads followed the same order BL>FL>OC>FG>FSG, also. These findings suggested that the three parameters (P τ , ΔP τ , ΔD) proposed can sensitively reflect the gully-head changes associated with land-use, and may be used as feasible parameters for understanding and predicting gully development under land-use change and global change. Abstract: Soil particle-size distribution (PSD) is one of the most important physical attributes due to its great influence on soil properties related to water movement, productivity, and soil erosion. The multifractal measures were useful tools in characterization of PSD in soils with different taxonomies. Land-use type largely influences PSD in a soil, but information on how this occurs for different land-use types is very limited. In this paper, multifractal Rényi dimension was applied to characterize PSD in soils with the same taxonomy and different land-use types. The effects of land use on the multifractal parameters were then analyzed. The study was conducted on the hilly-gullied regions of the Loess Plateau, China. A Calcic Cambisols soil was sampled from five land-use types: woodland, shrub land, grassland, terrace farmland and abandoned slope farmland with planted trees (ASFP). The result showed that: (1) entropy dimension (D 1) and entropy dimension/capacity dimension ratio (D 1/D 0) were significantly positively correlated with finer particle content and soil organic matter. (2) D 0, D 1 and D 1/D 0 were significantly influenced by land use. Land use could explain 24.6–58.5% of variability of D 0, D 1/D 0 and D 1, which may be potential parameters to reflect soil physical properties and soil quality influenced by land use. Abstract: To feed its 1.3 billion population with a per capita cultivated land far below the world average, China is already facing a great challenge of land scarcity. Accelerated urbanization along with explosive economic growth has further worsened the shortage of agricultural land over the last two decades. Increasing concern over land is expressed in terms of soil availability for grain production and soil quality degradation. Based on official statistics and data derived from satellite imagery, dynamics of China''s cultivated land over the past two decades is outlined and the causes and destinations of cultivated land loss are analyzed in this paper. Particularly, urbanization-related land-use changes and their spatial variation across the country are demonstrated. Furthermore, impacts of urbanization and associated waste disposals, consequent shifts of soil utilization on areal soil quality are expatiated. It is initially concluded that China''s cultivated land is shrinking at a rather shocking rate. Although conversion to urban and industrial uses took up a comparatively small share of total cultivated land loss, urbanization should still be considered as a great threat to future agricultural production for several reasons. Urbanization is increasing the risk of soil pollution through waste disposal and acid deposition derived from urban air pollution. Facing rapid urbanization, China is making positive policy responses to the challenge of decreasing availability of cultivated land and offering unremitting efforts towards the goal of national food security. Abstract: Accelerated soil erosion is thought to couple with population growth, land exploitation and environmental degradation, leading to a major pressure on sustainable development of agro-ecosystem. However, implementation of wise policy and application of sound new techniques combined with traditional knowledge, may lead to less soil erosion or limited erosion under the tolerable value while intensive land use or exploitation is adopted for the population and economic growth. Such process of breaking the link between “environmental bads” and “economic goods” was termed as “decoupling”. In the present paper, decoupling process of soil erosion from human activities has been analyzed with the conception of decoupling indicators on the Chinese Loess Plateau. Before 1949, intensive soil erosion, as indicated by the high suspended sediment yield in the Yellow River, was induced by the wars within the nation and against the invasion of foreign countries. A distinct decoupling occurred after 1949, especially since the 1980s because of adoption of watershed-based comprehensive soil-water conservation measures. It implies that soil erosion could be decoupled from intensive land use exploration and the increasing population by a wise policy. And the decoupling indicator could be a sensitive indicator for agri-environment assessment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In soil erosion models digital elevation models (DEMs) play an important role. Most interpolations from contour lines fail to address multi-value cells (MVCs) problems and therefore find it difficult to deal with steep slopes. These interpolation methods randomly assign a single value for MVCs and use this value in interpolation for nearby cells. This approach is very inaccurate. The frequency of MVCs and the problem caused by them was investigated, and the errors created by using the random values for MVCs was analyzed in this paper. A special treatment for MVCs and practical solution to create more accurate interpolation cell values in DEM building was developed. The new approach involves storing additional information of contour lines that go through the MVCs, such as maximum height and minimum height values, and the cardinal orientation relationship of the contour lines. A special MVC filter kernel was developed to decide the appropriate elevation value for interpolation. The computation method is based on raster data. An area on the Loess Plateau in North China was selected as an example to demonstrate the problems of the previously common used approach and to show results of the new method. Integration of farmers'' knowledge and perception with researchers'' knowledge is important for planning resource-conserving technologies. In many places in the world, farmer participation has been shown to be essential in the planning of sustainable land management. The findings of a participatory approach (PA) for integrated conservation planning in the Danangou catchment—a small catchment situated in the heart of Loess Plateau—are presented in this paper. The work was carried out by an interdisciplinary team during the period 1997–2000. The PA is an interactive learning process between local farmers and researchers. The process was facilitated by several visualisation and diagramming methods. This formed part of an integrated conservation planning approach, where three tools including PA, land evaluation and soil erosion modelling were combined within the entire conservation planning process.The Danangou catchment is characterised by its distribution of cropping systems on all degrees of slope to meet the food needs of the villagers. Farmers'' criteria on land suitability, including slope aspect and soil workability, were evaluated. Farmers approved several biological and physical conservative measures, which provided one of the important bases for formulating different land use scenarios (LU scenarios). The factors influencing farmers in choosing different LU scenarios were analysed, including (1) current household economy in relation to production from the land; and (2) prediction of changes in the household economy due to different LU scenarios.The farmers'' vision on implementation of the LU scenarios, i.e. gradually converting cropping land, conforms well with the plans of the local government. However, due to the poor living standard and lack of off-farm employment, any effort to improve land use towards more sustainable practices seemed to be difficult to implement without support from the government in terms of food, seedlings and also sources of employment for the villagers. The strategy for conversion work in connection with the central government policy on re-greening the Loess Plateau must focus first on areas where off-farm activities are available or potentially available. A diversity of conservation alternatives was found to meet the needs of different farmers'' groups. The participatory approach is recognised world-wide as a desirable approach for the success of research and development projects in the field of land management and conservation. A participatory approach (PA) for soil and water conservation is presented in this paper. The approach was one important part of Integrated Participatory Conservation Planning (IPCP) and aimed at involving farmers as our research partners in the whole conservation planning process in order to define relevant alternatives for sustainable land use. The work was carried out in the small catchment of Danangou, situated in the heart of the Loess plateau of China, by a multidisciplinary and multinational team, during the period 1998–2000 as part of the EROChina project.Several participatory methods, including group and team dynamics methods, sampling methods, interviewing and dialogue methods and visualisation and diagramming methods, were used for different purposes through a three-step process of the PA. The PA process can be described as researchers learning about local conditions (Step 1), followed by analyses of land use carried out by local farmers (Step 2), and finishing with farmer–researcher two-way feedback on the different land use scenarios (LUS) and their potential effects on erosion and household economy (Step 3). A Participatory Household Economy Analysis (PHEA) was developed and shown to be a suitable method for analysing the current and the potential changes in the household economy due to different land use scenarios (Step 3). The three steps of PA integrated closely with the modelling and land evaluation tools of the IPCP.The PA developed involved interactive learning between professionals and farmers, seek multiple perspectives and make use of systematic and structured learning processes and give a highly effective participation. The approach is promising in improving farmers'' awareness of environmental problems and solutions, as well as in linking local and scientific knowledge. The conditions for the successful use of the participatory methods in local conditions as well as of the teamwork are also discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
