Abstract

Jonathan Sperber's 'Rhineland Radicals: The Democratic Movement and the Revolution of 1848-1849' is a lively account of the revolution of 1848 in Rhineland. Sperber differs from other historians of the period in his defined regional focus, his reassessment of the urban-democrat and rural-conservative divide and most importantly in his objective ability to analyse the failure of the revolution without offering sentimental defence.
