Cultural tourism is the idea that a place’s cultural perception has enough value to make it a destination for travel. Communities characterized by a high level of cultural development are usually associated with a high level of satisfaction about living conditions and wealth. In this research, we postulate that the creation and development of the cultural attractions of a place to attract tourists also have a positive impact on the life condition of the local community, not only for increased money availability but also for a change of inhabitants’ mind-set. In this work we present an experiment of guided innovation in the frame of the Innovation for Change program, where a group of students is called to solve a given challenge with innovative solutions, by applying methodological approaches throughout the all process. The problem under analysis is ‘road crash fatalities’, with a focus on the consequences of a poor post-crash care management. The solution is developed through a series of steps, such as problem definition, brainstorming sessions and interviews with stakeholders. In the process towards energy transition from fossil fuel based energy to renewables systems, the way to involve final users in the energy production is still complex. Although many steps forward have been made by community energy around the world and especially in the EU, there are still many barriers and entry obstacles that do not allow a revolution in the energy market. In this paper, various aspects that distinguish a community energy have been explored. After presenting a state of the art on the development of community energy in Europe, the technologies supporting these cooperative realities were studied. This work reports a complete analysis on renewable energy production systems, community management software and the most innovative user engagement tools. This paper also presents the results of a survey, with the aim of studying how people can be more involved in the energy market. The transport sector plays a crucial role in the social and economic development of our society. Nevertheless, it is responsible for one quarter of the global CO2 emission worldwide. Although sustainable mobility could drastically reduce transport-related emissions, its adoption is still underdeveloped. In this paper, an impact innovation methodology has been used to generate a solution that could boost sustainable mobility development by creating an efficient offline tracking method that combines transactions and GPS data. The results suggest that incentive-based solutions could increase the adoption of sustainable mobility. Open Innovation (OI), a paradigm for managing innovation, can draw value from the way innovation is approached by fields such as design.To explore this, we conducted a design-led workshop with the academic stakeholders of a new, purposefully created OI orchestrator - the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Hub in Queensland, Australia. The result is an enriched discussion on the application of OI and a set of principles for the ARM Hub to draw upon in value creation and relationship management for all collaborators. This paper sets out to find whether unmet course expectations are correlated to perceived stress by course participants. The data was collected through an online questionnaire composed of Likert items, dichotomous questions and open questions, for which it was answered by a small sample of students at IdeaSquare participating in a summer programme (n=13). The main finding of this study suggests that there is a weakly positive correlation between perceived stress and unmet expectations, suggesting it is vital for organizers to communicate clearly what is expected of their course., CERN IdeaSquare Journal of Experimental Innovation, Vol. 4 No. 1 (2020)

Challenge Based Innovation (CBI) is a university programme where student teams create innovative design projects in collaboration with CERN. Each university participating in CBI creates its version of the program. Thus, this is not a closed program, but open to different curricula, periods and student backgrounds. Despite the impact on the participants and potential of the program, it is not as internationally recognised as it could be. This paper presents results of an experimental project that rebrands and redesigns the graphic identity of CBI in order to increase its recognition, better communicate its goals and project outcomes. The process involved an understanding of the problem, provided by interviews with the main stakeholders, along with the identity development attained through brainstorming, sketching, experimental prototyping and iterating. Innovation is seen as a crucial factor to drive businesses to grow, stand out and to meet customer needs. However, most research on open innovation focuses on commercial businesses. Here, we study how research institutes, specifically CERN, establish innovation as their driving force, primarily through internal and external openness. To explore how interdisciplinary collaboration and open innovation is perceived by CERN’s constituents, mixed-form interviews have been conducted. A majority is found to be in favour of interdisciplinary collaboration, and acknowledges the impact of open innovation. In past decades the usage of plastic has seen a tremendous increment. This raise is mainly caused by industrial development and by the spread of this material in every aspect of people life, from food package to aerospace application. For sure plastic has a key role in society and it is not possible to erase, nevertheless its overuse has a serious impact on the environment as well know. In particular, just a few percentage of the total amount of plastic is recycled, the rest has to be landfilled or burnt causing serious pollution side effect. This poor circularity in plastic value chain is mainly caused by difficulties in sorting processes and expensiveness of recycling. By the way a great part of plastic applications could be avoided without implying a reduction in life quality for the people. In addition, a better education in plastic objects shopping and plastic waste management could decrease the difficulties in sorting and recycling. One of the crucial reason why these applications and incorrect behaviour are still present is that the information on alternatives are not present or very hard to be found. In the present paper a novel platform to enhance a more plastic-free life is presented. First a detailed description of the problem is stated, then the process to achieve the proposed solution is described. Social Innovation labs present an unorthodox and varied typology, but one common denominator among them is the goal to create complex inter-organizational collaborations in order to tackle complex problems. These labs are systemic, experimental and social in nature. They utilise methodologies already discussed in the collaboration theory literature, adapting them to the context of innovation. We argue that social Innovation labs create safe spaces to innovate by using a framework composed of time, techniques and tools, which we refer to as the three T’s framework. This article discusses a recent knowledge transfer (KT) case of CERN flagship open source hardware (OSH) technology commercialization for high frequency trading time stamping purposes. The case seems at first sight as KT success story par excellence: it enables viable business model without eroding market prices, increases the industrial innovation adoption clockspeed, and the technical complexity and operational importance of the adopted technology are high. Raman spectroscopy is broadly used in both industrial and academic communities, including nanotechnology, biology, materials engineering, physics, pharmaceutical industry and environment protection monitoring. Most of these devices are worth thousands of dollars and usually require a PhD-level assistant to operate them, hence they are usually not available for college and undergraduate students. The present paper describes an affordable, easy-to-use, Raman spectrometer that can be built with commercially available electronics and optics and 3D printing. A Crossed Czerny Turner spectrometer optical configuration has been built with a linear CCD module driven by a Nucleo F401RE and Raspberry Pi. Raman spectra of Rhodamine B liquid was obtained. We propose that this system could make it easier for universities to build and use an affordable, effective, easy-to-use, Raman spectrometer for educational purposes. Introducing this technology to students with an affordable, easy-to-use, device as early as possible would help universities and colleges to draw attention to studying science. In 2017 CERN IdeaSquare collaborated with the Royal College of Art, London to explore how an interdisciplinary approach to innovation that combines science, technology, design and business might address the global sustainability challenges as embodied in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals 2030. This collaboration examined how an interdisciplinary design led model of innovation that fuses design thinking with scientific discovery, could enable the innovative and potentially disruptive technologies from CERN to address the world’s most intractable challenges, and specifically the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In this paper we explore the nature of interdisciplinary innovation, recent trends in its approach, and describe the way this has been applied, through action research, to generate product service systems that address the UN’s SDGs. This paper inquires about how collaborative communities configure online and onsite collaboration practices throughout their lifecycle, paying specific attention to how knowledge practices and online-onsite collaboration practices interplay. While previous literature shows that the same online and onsite collaboration practices can be both good and bad for an organization’s ability to generate new knowledge, we show that this insight can be better understood at the light of an organization’s lifecycle. By studying the evolution of a collaborative community of designers, we show that different stages of development afford different types of community structuring, identity processes and knowledge practices, which in turn shape different needs in terms of online-onsite interplay. This study explores how managerial practices can develop and enhance a creative climate in science parks. Based on a case study of one of the most important Italian science parks, Area Science Park, our results suggest that science park management can further enhance the park’s park potential and strengthen ties to its different actors by focusing on creative climate development. In particular, we identify and discuss key aspects that are relevant to this challenge, i.e. promotion of a shared identity, design of structured work processes, use of communal spaces and internal communication technology. This paper explores how experimenting with collaborative processes contributes to reinventing the purpose and practices of an organization. Based on a case study of the Insectarium of Montréal, we focus on the 2-year collaborative process orchestrated by the director, involving employees, experts and visitors. Our findings show several organizational implications of engaging in this type of experimentation: specifically, beyond enabling the collective generation of new ideas, experimenting through collaboration is an excellent opportunity to renew the organization’s practices and support the development of a reflexive leadership. Experiments have been somehow neglected in innovation literature. In this paper, we propose the analysis of a case of an IT project, which was constructed as an experiment and it was built as a reaction to the failure of developing a system based on the conventional modes. We use the theory of sensemaking and sensegiving in analysing historical documents to demonstrate that making sense of failure can lead to the success of an experiment. What kinds of challenges do teams face when engaged in design thinking in co-located and remote working environments? This paper demonstrates the perceived difficulty of different design activities and how they compare to one another. A framework comprising nine individual design activities is used to map out experiences of six multicultural, distributed student design teams. The results illustrate how decision-making is perceived as one of the most difficult activities. The purpose of this paper is to offer a “handbook at-a-glance” for enabling disruptive innovation in a diffuse geo-political and economic landscape. That is, to identify the enabling parameters for economy-revitalizing innovation in a geo- economically diffuse area. It is assumed that there are multiple parallel funding streams and resources allocation mechanisms, multiple political systems, diffuse legal and regulatory frameworks, and tight budgetary constraints and control. Our approach is inspired by systems biology and ecology-thinking. A five-step implementation plan is proposed, using research infrastructures as a co-innovation platform. An order of magnitude for required investments is given, as well as an expected multiplication factor over a time period of five years. The fuzzy front in product development is frequently mentioned as the most critical phase of the innovation process, and the five cases of successful design innovations here indicate that experiments and an experimental approach are generating positive outcomes. The experiments in the cases can be characterized as various forms of prototyping. Interestingly the prototyping and experiments took place in the very early phases of the innovation process, rather than later as often advised and interestingly experimentation in the cases here appears to be a vehicle for creating new options. Furthermore, the analysis demonstrates that prototyping can be considered as a punctuation device, as it offers those involved the option of opting out of ongoing processes, routines and engage in playful behavior by allowing for a freer experimentation with materials, processes, methods to challenge existing knowledge and explore potential solutions.
