We report a new record of Rhinoclemmys punctularia (Daudin, 1801), extending the geographic distribution of this species by 450 km towards the south to the Araguaia River in the state of Pará, Brazil. The new record comes from an ecotonal area of the Cerrado and Amazon biomes, which indicates a possible adaptability of this species in fragmented environments and in agricultural areas. Black Marsh Turtle, Siebenrockiella crassicollis (Gray, 1831), is a freshwater turtle native across Southeast Asia and is categorized as Endangered according to the IUCN Red List. We report the first record of this species from Belitung, a remote island in Indonesia, based on photographs. The effort to uncover herpetofauna within the zone of influence of the Sierra del Divisor National Park has been focused on the northern reaches. The Abujao basin represents the Sierra del Divisor region well in an understudied area central to the Peruvian Amazon. We found 108 species of amphibians and squamate reptiles. Seven records extend ranges from the northern regions, while two records unite with southern regions (Madre De Dios and the Fitzcarrald Arc/Purus valley). There are higher levels of diversity attributable to land-cover units indicative of high terraces and hilly zones, as opposed to low hydromorphic habitats. Our new record for Pristimantis iiap Padial, Gagliardi-Urrutia, Chaparro & Gutiérrez, 2016 brings more resolution to this newly described species. We made observations of an unidentified species of blindsnake, which could represent a unique part of the fauna. Amphibian and reptile diversity from Isla Santay (Durán, Ecuador) has been underestimated due to the lack of monitoring throughout the island. Historically, this island has also been affected by anthropic landscape changes which limit the occurrence of certain species and favors the dispersion of opportunistic or more tolerant species. Such species dynamics tend to be more evident on islands, since their isolation limits species' mobility. We present an updated checklist of the herpetofauna of Isla Santay Durán, Ecuador, and report for the first time the occurrence of two introduced species, Anolis sagrei Duméril & Bibron, 1837, Brown Anole, and Hemydactylus frenatus Duméril & Bibron, 1836. The Malayan Flat-shelled Turtle, Notochelys platynota (Gray 1834), is a freshwater turtle endemic across Southeast Asia and is categorized as Vulnerable according to the IUCN Red list. We report the first record of this species from Belitung, a remote Island in Indonesia, based on photographs. The new record is approximately 150 km to the east of the nearest locality on Bangka Island, Indonesia. Invasive species are of global conservation concern. South Korea is also facing the same challenge, especially, due to the growing pet trade. Herein, we report Pelomedusa cf. olivacea (Schweigger, 1812) from the wild in South Korea, where it has been imported as a pet. This is the first record of Pelomedusa in the Asian continent. In October 2019, we found an individual of this species beside Hongje Stream in Seoul. We recommend immediate control measures and strict monitoring of the pet trade to avoid the introduction of more invasive species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trimerodytes yunnanensis (Rao & Yang, 1998), Mountain Water Snake, mainly occurs at elevations of more than 1,000 m above sea level (a.s.l.). We provide both a range extension to Lampang, Thailand, and the lowest known elevation record for this species at 400 m a.s.l. This record is also the southernmost known occurrence of T. yunnanensis and the genus as a whole. Angola has experienced an incredible increase of the knowledge of its herpetofauna over the past decade. However, accurate biodiversity inventories remain deficient for certain regions of particular conservation interest. We therefore provide an updated checklist of Iona National Park’s herpetofauna, with 75 recorded species, including five amphibians and 70 reptiles, 40 of these recorded for the first time in Iona National Park. These species comprise ~80% of the reptile diversity of Namibe Province. Therefore, this work recognises Iona National Park as the most reptile-diverse protected area in Angola and is potentially one of the richest in southern Africa. The Xerotyphlops vermicularis (Merrem, 1820) complex consists of small, burrowing snakes that occur from the Balkan Peninsula to Afghanistan and are mostly observed during the spring. We report new records of this snake (10 individuals observed) from Elenite village in coastal Bulgaria. According to current knowledge, they represent the northernmost locality of the species in the Balkan Peninsula. We expand the known distribution of X. vermicularis and fill information gaps. We document the first verifiable records of Claudius angustatus Cope, 1865 in the Selva Lacandona, Chiapas, Mexico. Three individuals were observed in different types of anthropic land covers. These records are the most recent observations of C. angustatus in the southeastern zone of its range in more than 20 years, thus representing the southernmost known occurrences of this species. With these records we confirm the long-suspected presence of C. angustatus in the region, increasing the number of reptile species in the Selva Lacandona to 91. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We provide the first evidence of the presence of the Persian Gulf Sea Snake, Hydrophis lapemoides (Gray, 1849), along the coast of Bangladesh. This species was assumed to exist in there, but neither specimens nor confirmed observations exist until now. We document here the first confirmed record of H. lapemoides based on a freshly collected and taxonomically verified specimen from coastal Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi specimen had the following diagnostic characters: 55 black bands, a dorsal scale composition of 35:51:43, 342 ventrals, one pre-ocular, two post-oculars, 2+3 temporals, 8 supralabials (II largest and contact prefrontals; III–IV contact orbit) and 8 infralabials (I–IV contact genials). Batu Hampar Recreational Forest (BHRF) is a lowland dipterocarp forest located in the northwestern region of Peninsular Malaysia and has not been surveyed for its herpetofauna until now. A preliminary survey of the herpetofaunal diversity of BHRF was conducted from September 2018 to February 2019 resulting in 103 individuals (37 species) of amphibians and reptiles found. This includes 14 species of frogs from six families and 10 genera; 14 species of lizards from four families and 11 genera; eight species of snakes from five families and eight genera; and one species of freshwater turtle. From these results, Batu Hampar Recreational Forest has a high herpetofaunal diversity with a Simpson's Index of Diversity of 0.869 and a Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index of 2.930. We conducted a long-term inventory of the herpetofauna of Wildsumaco Wildlife Sanctuary in the eastern part of the Napo Province in Ecuador. This private preserve is about 500 ha in size and is located on the southern slopes of Volcán Sumaco. The preserve contains primary forest, secondary forest, and pasture habitats. Based mostly on nocturnal transect sampling we documented 39 species of amphibians including one species of salamander, two species of caecilians, and 36 species of frogs. Rain frogs (Pristimantis Jiminez de la Espada, 1871) were diverse with 14 species documented. A diverse species assemblage of 45 reptile species was also documented on the preserve. Six amphibian species found were listed by the IUCN Red List. At least three species exhibited substantial geographic range extensions and seven species showed elevational range extensions. We present an additional country record and a list of voucher specimens for Rhinobothryum lentiginosum (Scopoli, 1788) (Serpentes, Colubridae) from Bolivia. Very little published information on museum specimens and locality data from Bolivia exists for this species. Reptiles and amphibians are experiencing declines across the globe. In Monteverde, Costa Rica, these declines and their underlying causes have been relatively well studied since the early 1990s, and many protected areas have been set aside to conserve these species. However, thorough surveys of the herpetofaunal diversity in these areas have been scarce over the last 20 years. We conducted a survey of all reptile and amphibian species at the University of Georgia Costa Rica (UGACR), a field station in San Luis de Monteverde. Herein, we present an annotated checklist of the 48 species (35 reptiles and 13 amphibians) that we encountered. While we did not find any exceptionally rare or endangered species, the number of species we encountered is disproportionately high given the small plot of land occupied by UGACR. This underscores the importance of conducting regular diversity surveys in biodiversity hotspots as a means to better inform conservation efforts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We characterize the amphibian and reptile fauna from four habitats of the Andean region of the department of Santander, Colombia. Eight species were recorded, including four amphibians and four reptiles. The family Hylidae was represented by two species and had the greatest abundance of individuals at 241. Among reptiles, the family with the greatest diversity was the Colubridae, with two species, but the Dactyloidae had the greatest abundance, with seven individuals. The grassland habitat exhibited the greatest diversity, with five species found, and it was the habitat with the greatest abundance of individuals, with 242 individuals obtained. We report the first record of a snake, Ahaetulla laudankia Deepak, Narayanan, Sarkar, Dutta & Mohapatra, 2019 (Colubridae, Ahaetullinae) and confirm the occurrence of Lycodon travancoricus (Beddome, 1870) (Colubridae, Colubrinae) from Gujarat state based on reptile surveys conducted in South, Central, and Saurashtra regions of the state. Rondonops biscutatus is a gymnophthalmid litter-lizard which occurs in the Amazon rainforests and the transitional areas between Amazonia and Cerrado. This species' distribution is strongly biased by a lack of data, possibly because it was recently described, small-bodied, and living in cryptic habits. Here, we present occurrence data of six specimens from four locations in transitional areas between forests in Amazonia and Cerrado (central Brazil), in the upper Paraguay River, at the northern end of the Pantanal, midwestern Brazil. We present a preliminary list of the herpetofauna in the vicinity of La Nube Biological Station, Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, Peru. We recorded 18 amphibian species and 15 reptile species. We add 14 species to the final list, which were not confirmed by previous studies for this area. For 2 amphibian species, Pristimantis cf. ockendeni Boulenger, 1912 and Bolitoglossa cf. altamazonica Cope, 1874, we provide a brief description for our tentative identifications. Mesoscincus managuae (Dunn, 1933) (Squamata, Scincidae) is a typical dry-forest species found along the Pacific versant of Central America from Guatemala to northwestern Costa Rica. Here, we report the occurrence of this species on the Caribbean versant of Honduras, specifically on the Sula Plain, Deparment of Cortés. This is a subhumid habitat similar to others in the Mesoamerican region which have comparable herpetofauna assemblages and where M. managuae has already been recorded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Distributions of amphibian and reptile species in northern Mexico are poorly understood when compared to adjacent areas of the southwestern United States. To address this gap in knowledge, we conducted a series of surveys in eastcentral Chihuahua, Mexico in 2014-2016. We documented 40 new municipality records for amphibian and reptile species by means of high quality digital photos. Euspondylus excelsum was described from 8 specimens from the Region Huánuco in central Peru. We obtained an adult female from the Region Junín and a subadult male (photo vouchers only) from the Region Madre de Dios. Our new records of E. excelsum extend the range of this species by 592 km to the south and increase the previously known elevational range from 1023-1159 m a.s.l. to 550-1550 m a.s.l. The adult female is the largest known specimen extending the maximum SVL to 90.1 mm. Our findings indicate that E. excelsum is relatively widely distributed in the montane forests and foothills of the eastern Andes. We monitored reptile and bird roadkills in Cerrado-Pantanal landscapes along the Campo Grande to Corumbá highway BR-262. We describe species distribution in different landscape zones, including the first geographic record for Hydrodynastes bicinctus Herrmann, 1804 in the Pantanal basin. The roadkill occurrence of Spizaetus melanoleucus (Vieillot, 1816) is an outstanding record. We recorded 930 individuals belonging to 29 reptile and 47 bird species; 20 of these species are new roadkill records in Brazil. The 8 new records of reptile species include Eunectes notaeus Cope, 1862, Bothrops mattogrossensis Amaral,1925, Dracaena paraguayensis Amaral,1950 and H. bicinctus; and 12 new records of bird species include S. melanoleucus, Heterospizias meridionalis Latham, 1790, Urubitinga urubitinga (Gmelin, 1788), Pulsatrix perspicillata (Latham, 1790), Aramus guarauna (Linnaeus, 1766), and Jabiru mycteria (Lichtenstein, 1819). Richness of road-killed species on the BR-262 highway seemed to be high, reinforcing concerns about wildlife-vehicle collisions where these accidents occur, as they lead to long term and chronic impacts on wildlife and road safety in the Pantanal region. Dryocalamus subannulatus is reported for the first time from Myanmar. A single individual was found on the Thayawthadangyi Island Group in the Myeik Archipelago, Tanintharyi Region. Morphological features and a maximum likelihood analysis of the 16S mitochondrial gene confirm its identity. This specimen represents the first record of D. subannulatus north of the Isthmus of Kra. We present an annotated list of herpetofauna for the municipality of João Câmara, Rio Grande do Norte State (RN), Brazil, in Caatinga domain. The data were obtained through fauna rescue program activities performed during the installation of two wind energy parks. We recorded 10 species of lizards, eight snakes, four amphisbaenids and three anurans. The results obtained present extensions to known geographic distribution for four species (Amphisbaena littoralis, Enyalius bibronii, Epictia borapeliotes and Corythomantis greeningi) and add information to the natural history of the first two species. Of all the Ophidiofaunal diversity in mainland India, some species occurrences are assumed to be rare. The same is the scenario with the underrepresented regions in Telangana state, India. Here we present the first report of the occurrence of the little known colubrid, Sibynophis subpunctatus (Duméril, Bibron & Duméril, 1854), from northern and southern forest reserves in Komaram Bheem-Asifabad and Nagarkurnool districts of Telangana. Rondonops biscutatus is a Iphisini species known from the southwestern portion of the Brazilian Amazon forest, in the states of Mato Grosso, Pará and Rondônia. The northern Andes are a geographically, climatically, and ecologically complex area that harbors a high number of species and presents a high level of endemism. However, the landscape of this region has been highly transformed by human activities, including agriculture, cattle grazing, urbanization, and recently, the construction of large infrastructure projects. This study presents a list of amphibians and reptiles compiled from field surveys carried out between 2006 and 2016 in the protected areas surrounding 2 hydroelectric projects located on the eastern flank of the northern Cordillera Central in Colombia. The checklist is comprised of 101 species (43 amphibians and 58 reptiles), including 17 endemic to Colombia and 4 threatened species. The high species density, high representativeness of the regional biodiversity, and high level of amphibian endemism make these 2 protected areas important for conservation of the regional herpetofauna. Despite extensive surveys conducted in the past, many remote areas in the Philippines remain unexplored and many species are unknown to science. The Mount Hamiguitan Range (MHR) is among these areas, containing large remaining forests tracts. In this study, we report new records of amphibians and reptiles from MHR and propose removing two species from the previously listed species from this mountain range. We used standardized techniques to sample populations of amphibians and reptiles in fragmented forests of Mt. Hamiguitan. Our survey resulted in 16 new records of species (four frogs, three lizards and nine snakes). Combining our results with previous studies, the known species diversity from the MHR is now increased to a total of 61 taxa. Our results highlight the underestimated diversity of herpetofauna of Mt. We present the first record of Lygophis meridionalis for the state of Espírito Santo, in southeastern Brazil, and a distribution map based on indexed literature. This species of the family Dipsadidae is widely distributed in South America, although records from Brazil are only available for the states of São Paulo, Amazonas, Pará, Goiás, Tocantins, and Bahia. We report a new specimen of Tachymenis chilensis chilensis from Epu Lauquen Natural Reserve, Neuquén, Argentina. This specimen represents the northernmost voucher of T. c. chilensis in Argentina and confirms the presence of the subspecies occupying moist habitats remnants in dry areas of northern Neuquén province. Moreover, this record corresponds to the northernmost population of T. c. chilensis in a protected area in Argentina. We also found two sympatric anurans, Rhinella spinulosa and Pleurodema thaul. We present the first record of Spilotes sulphureus for the state of Sergipe. In Brazil, this species is distributed Amazon Rainforest, Atlantic Forest and Caatinga biomes. This large-bodied snake has arboreal habit, is diurnal, has oviparous reproduction, feeds on birds, eggs, lizards, bats, amphibians and small mammals and presents the defensive behaviour of lateral compression of the body. In this note, we present new locality records and extend the known geographical distribution and elevation range of the dwarf iguana Enyalioides touzeti in southern Ecuador. Mussurana quimi is a species of Pseudoboini known from central, southeastern, and southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. We report the occurrence of this species in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, based on two specimens from Santa Maria municipality. This report extends this species' distribution about 950 km south from its type locality and 330 km south from the nearest previous locality record (Posadas, Argentina). It also represent new southernmost records for M. quimi. We also provide brief comments on coloration and morphological variation of this species as well as an updated distribution map. We update a species list of reptile diversity at the Reserva Natural Laguna Blanca, with four additional species of snakes, Drymarchon corais Boie, 1827, Dipsas cisticeps (Boettger, 1885), Oxyrhopus rhombifer rhombifer Duméril, Bibron & Duméril, 1854, and Phimophis guerini (Duméril, Bibron & Duméril, 1854). This additional data qualifies San Pedro department as the most diverse department in Paraguay for reptiles. We build upon the already strong case for the reserve, which had its official protection lapse after five years, to be redeclared as a protected area and recognised as an "Important Area for the Conservation of Amphibians and Reptiles". Faunistic inventories regarding natural history of amphibians and reptiles are considered scarce and very little is known about their assemblages in urban areas; the Pampas morphoclimatic domain, also known as Uruguayan Savannah or Southern Grasslands, is also poorly known regarding their faunal composition. Herein, we present a checklist of 16 amphibian and 20 reptile species recorded over a course of four years in the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciências e Tecnologia, Câmpus Pelotas-Visconde da Graça, in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We also present data on natural history and discuss conservation efforts to be undertaken in the area, in one of the least preserved and known Brazilian morphoclimatic domains, providing insights into urban herpetofaunal diversity patterns and showing the importance of modified areas in its conservation. We present data on occurrence of chelonians for the Madeira River (southwestern Amazon, Brazil). Sampling was undertaken along the BR-319 Highway in the Madeira-Purus interfluvium and along a 125-km stretch of the upper Madeira River. Findings were contrasted with a checklist of species expected to occur in the region according to current distribution maps, and with literature data for the Madeira subbasin. Out of 12 expected species, we recorded five in the Madeira- Purus interfluvium (three other species were registered by other recent voucher-based studies in the region), and eight species in the upper Madeira region. Podocnemis expansa (Schweigger, 1812) and P. unifilis Troschel, 1848 occurred below and inbetween the upper Madeira rapids. Podocnemis sextuberculata Cornalia, 1849 had its range extended by over 700 km, but may be limited upriver by the rapids. Mesoclemmys gibba (Schweigger, 1812) and M. raniceps Gray, 1855 occurred sympatrically along the river. Chelonian diversity along the lower and upper Madeira appears to be complementary. We provide a list of lizards, snakes, chelonians, and amphibians collected during a 30-day expedition to the Seridó Ecological Station (ESEC Seridó), Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. We sampled species using thirty-seven pitfall trap stations composed of four buckets each, along with glue traps and active searches. We recorded 13 species of lizards, eight snakes, 19 amphibians, and one chelonian. Rarefaction curves suggest local biodiversity is still underestimated. Sampling during rainy season was crucial to stabilize rarefaction curve for amphibians. Comparisons of our results with data from literature show we did not capture some arboreal and semifossorial lizards known for the area. Seridó Ecological Station fauna is characterized mainly by generalist species common to lowland Caatinga sites. We present a list of snake species found in 10 municipalities in the Cerrado of western Bahia state, Brazil. One hundred and twenty individuals of 46 species from seven families were examined. Abstract: We provide a checklist of the amphibians and reptiles of Rio Macho Biological Station (RMBS), Costa Rica. During a period of a year (2012-2013)we conducted visual and acoustic surveys in a natural mature forest plot (>50 years old) (MF), secondary forest plot (-17 years old) (SF), in open areas and riparian forest at RMBS. We found a total of 11 species of amphibians and 15 species of reptiles belonging to 11 taxonomic families. We also compared the diversity of the MF against the SF. The MF contained 10 species (five amphibians and five reptiles) and the SF seven (three amphibians and four reptiles), with similar dominance between sites. Unfortunately, some forest and riparian species have vanished at this elevation after an enigmatic decline; according to historical literature pristine areas should contain higher species richness. We provide a list of amphibians and reptiles of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in the southern half of the Mexican Yucatan, in the state of Campeche. The study area was sampled through opportunistic, transect and pitfall trap surveys conducted for three successive years. These surveys resulted in a total of 2,359 amphibian and reptile encounters, belonging to 20 amphibian and 69 reptile species from 24 total families. Hydrops martii is a poorly known water snake of the tribe Hydropsini, which has been extensively found across northern South America. In this study, we present the first record in Amapá, based on a single specimen from the municipality of Macapá (0.0333, -51.0666), in the tropical moist broad-leafed forests of northern Brazil. This record extends the species range ca 195 km north from its nearest known record, on Marajó Island, in Pará, in the same ecoregion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study reports a qualitative survey of the reptiles present in Río Pilcomayo National Park in Formosa, Argentina. A total of 30 reptile species were recorded between June 2009 and June 2011. Here we provide a checklist that includes relative species abundance, the different habitats present in the national park as well as the national conservation category for each species. In addition, 12 other reptile species cited in the literature for this area are included in the checklist. This study provides baseline information for future research in the park. We compiled a checklist of the amphibians and reptiles of the state of Hidalgo, Mexico. The herpetofauna of Hidalgo consists of a total of 175 species: 54 amphibians (14 salamanders and 40 anurans); and 121 reptiles (one crocodile, five turtles, 36 lizards, 79 snakes). These taxa represent 32 families (12 amphibian families, 20 reptile families) and 87 genera (24 amphibian genera, 63 reptile genera). Two of these species are non-native species (Hemidactylus frenatus Duméril and Bibron, 1836 and Indotyphlops braminus (Daudin, 1803)). This herpetofauna represents a mixture of species from both the Sierra Madre Oriental and the Transvolcanic Belt. In addition, 26% of all categorized amphibian and reptile species in Hidalgo are considered Vulnerable, Near Threatened, Endangered, or Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List. Lists of reptiles of localities in Paraná are still scarce and restricted to three works, developed in the central-north and eastern regions of the state. Herein we present a list of reptiles of the Complexo Energético Fundão-Santa Clara, located in the central-south region of Paraná. The study was carried out from May 2010 to March 2012. We recorded 31 species: 20 snakes, seven lizards, two amphisbaenians and two testudines. We hope through this work contribute to a greater knowledge of the reptilian fauna of the central-south region of Paraná. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We conducted a first survey of the amphibians and reptiles of the Nectandra Cloud Forest Reserve in June 2010, during the rainy season in Costa Rica. We found a total of 30 species of amphibians and reptiles in 15 families during our weeklong survey, including 15 frogs, 2 salamanders, 7 lizards, and 6 snakes. We report new locality records of Cercosaura vertebralis O'Shaughnessy, 1879 in Peru, after more than 40 years since the discovery of the single known Peruvian specimen. The Peruvian range of Cercosaura vertebralis, which was previously restricted to Piura, is extended into the Cajamarca region (Tabaconas Namballe and La Granja). We also examined intraspecific variation of the species throughout its range and provide a hemipenial description from the new specimens. In addition, we comment on the population status of C. vertebralis in Peru, and provide data supporting the synonymy of C. ampuedai with C. vertebralis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report new localities in Nicaragua for thirteen poorly known snake species that were collected for the second (Dipsas articulata and Ungaliophis panamensis), third (Coniophanes bipunctatus, Lachesis stenophrys, Sibon annulatus, Sibon dimidiatus, Tantilla reticulata, and Tropidodipsas sartorii), fourth (Atropoides mexicanus, Enuliophis sclateri, Imantodes inornatus, and Nothopsis rugosus), and fifth (Corallus annulatus) times in the country. We also provide distributional range extensions for all viper species known to occur in Nicaragua (Agkistrodon howardgloydi, Atropoides mexicanus, Bothriechis schlegelii, Bothrops asper, Crotalus simus, Lachesis stenophrys, Porthidium nasutum, and Porthidium ophryomegas), one coral snake (Micrurus alleni), and four mildly venomous snakes (Conophis lineatus, Leptodrymus pulcherrimus, Leptophis ahaetulla, and Xenodon rabdocephalus), and the first records for four snake species (Imantodes gemmistratus, Lachesis stenophrys, Pseudoelaphe flavirufa, and Tantilla armillata) from within the Nicaraguan national protected areas system.
