A shape-persistent alleno-acetylenic macrocycle, peripherally decorated with eight phenolic rings, has been synthesized in enantiomerically pure form. Its electronic circular dichroism spectrum features a strong chiroptical response. In the solid state, the macrocycle stacks in pillars to form channels and the stacks undergo further self-assembly into a three-dimensional porous architecture through lateral intermolecular hydrogen-bonding.

Non-concerted [2+2] and [4+2] cycloadditions between N,N-dimethylanilino-substituted 1,1,2,4,4-pentacyanobuta-1,3-diene and 4-ethynyl-N,N-dimethylaniline are controlled by solvent polarity and provide access to a highly functionalised 6,6-dicyanopentafulvene featuring an intense, low-energy charge-transfer band and to an unusual spirocyclic zwitterion, characterised by X-ray analysis., (© The Royal Society of Chemistry 2011)

Push-pull-chromophore-[60]fullerene conjugates featuring N,N-dimethylanilino-substituted 1,1,4,4-buta-1,3-dienes directly attached to the carbon sphere are transformed into chiral 1,2,9,12-tetrakis-adducts by a novel thermal rearrangement pathway.

A network of orthogonal C=O...C=O interactions was identified in the X-ray crystal structure of an alpha,alpha-difluorocyclopentanone derivative. This finding inspired investigations of self-association driven by these weak dipolar interactions in apolar solvents, which was proven by (1)H NMR spectroscopy.

Substituent effects on the folding equilibrium of molecular torsion balances are rationalised on the basis of changes in the electrostatic interactions, the exchange repulsion, and the dispersive contributions to the interaction free enthalpy.
