33. Controllable preparation of fluorinated boron nitride nanosheets for excellent tribological behaviors

Abstract

Although fluorinated boron nitride nanosheets (F-BNNSs) have been proved possessing superior lubricating properties via density-functional theory, the effect of fluorine (F) content on the tribological behaviors has not been studied in experiment so far. Because it is still a challenge to obtain F-BNNSs with different F content through the controllable preparation method. Here, F-BNNSs were successfully prepared via solvothermal method, using a nontoxic and noncorrosive solid acid as F source for fluorination of hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNSs). It is of great significance to achieve the tunability of F content in the range from 4.09% to 14.6% by controlling dosage of fluorinating agent and fluorinating time. F-BNNSs2.0-24 with the highest F content possess the best tribological performance: the average friction coefficient and wear rate can decrease by 32.3% and over 91%, respectively. The outstanding tribological properties are attributed to their special composition, physicochemical properties, nanostructure and interface behaviors, which promotes the formation of self-lubricating structure and dense protective tribo-films. F-BNNSs show promising potentials as a substitute of traditional h-BNNSs in industrial application. Prospectively, this method can also be applied in fluorination of other two-dimensional materials to improve the tribological behaviors, considering its advantages of conveniency, controllability and environmental friendliness.

Abstract

Sorption enhanced steam reforming of glycerol (SESRG) enables the production of high-purity hydrogen from the by-product of biodiesel manufacture. To this end, highly stable catalysts and CO 2 sorbents are desired to overcome the performance degradation at high temperatures. Herein, a bi-functional catalyst, Co–CaO–Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 , is proposed to couple CO 2 sorption and catalytic reforming of glycerol on nanoscale. The catalyst was derived from a Co–Ca–Al hydrotalcite-like (HTl) material to achieve homogeneous mixing of Co, CaO and Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 as a spacer to prevent CaO sintering. At Ca/Al of 2.8, the highest catalytic activity and sorption capability were reached. Over the optimized catalyst, high-purity H 2 of 96.4% was produced at 525 °C through SESRG during the pre-breakthrough stage. High stability of the bi-functional catalyst was demonstrated by a cyclic SESRG-calcination operation up to 50 times. The role of Ca 12 Al 14 O 33 as spacer of CaO was proved by XRD and TEM-EDS analysis. In addition, it was found that Ca 3 Co 2 O 6 , which is formed during the calcination stage and is reduced during the SESRG to release Co catalysts, may act as a dynamic reservoir of Co catalysts to prevent Co from sintering, leading to an excellent SESRG activity and stability. Abstract

Abstract: An auto-thermal micro-reformer was fabricated to produce hydrogen from ethanol–water mixture. The reformer employed an Ir/La2O3 catalyst supported on ceramic foam. The effect of ceramic foam materials, including Al2O3, SiC and ZrO2, on the performance of the micro-reformer was investigated. The optimal catalytic activity and hydrogen selectivity were achieved over the ZrO2 loaded catalyst. The strong interaction between the ceramic ZrO2 foam and the catalyst results in the reduction of the Ir particle size, which significantly improves the ethanol reforming activity, hydrogen selectivity and catalyst stability. The resistance to vibration and the stability of the reformer during the repeated start-up and shut-down (RSS) operation were studied. The reformer can be auto-thermally started-up within ∼90s. During a continuous operation, the reformer produces 3.1mol H2 per mol ethanol with a hydrogen flow rate of ∼0.41m3/h, which can feed a H2–O2 fuel cell at the level of ∼765W. These results demonstrate the potential application of the proposed reformer in the portable distributed hydrogen source. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
