9. Chemodosimeter functionalized diatomaceous earth particles for visual detection and removal of trace mercury ions from water.

Abstract

The rhodamine based receptor, P2 has been developed for the detection of environmentally hazardous Hg 2+ ions with a limit of detection, 1.5 × 10 −6 M. The P2 showed a significant colour change from colourless to pink upon binding with Hg 2+ ions. As a result, a new peak at 533 nm was observed in UV–vis spectroscopy which was attributed to spirolactum ring opening followed by through bond energy transfer (TBET). In addition, the presence of other competing cations did not interfere the detection of Hg 2+ ions. Further, P2 has been successfully immobilized onto the naturally available and highly porous diatomaceous earth particles (P2D) for removal of Hg 2+ ions from water. The covalently attached organic molecule in P2D forms complex with Hg 2+ ion present in the water and thus traps the Hg 2+ ions. Based on this, a proof-of-concept cartridge has been developed for water purification. The cartridge having 450 mg of P2D was able to purify 30 mL of water containing 1 ppm Hg 2+ ions. Abstract

Turmeric ( Curcuma longa ) an important food ingredient has been used from ancient times for various biological applications, but to date it has not been considered for the colorimetric detection of anions and cations. In this work, the application of turmeric solution for the colorimetric detection of F − and iron ions was demonstrated. Results showed a significant colour change from yellow to blue and yellow to orange upon addition of F − and iron ions respectively. The detection mechanism was investigated using curcumin, a major component of turmeric powder. The change in colour and fluorescence quenching was attributed to the formation of receptor complex with F − and iron ions which resulted in intramolecular charge transfer transition. The mechanism of binding has been confirmed by UV–vis, 1 H NMR and fluorescence titrations. The present detection concept was further explored to develop a low cost, reusable F − detection kit, which showed its ability to detect F − ions in both aqueous and organic medium at a very low concentration such as 1 ppm. Abstract

usc It is a challenge to compound hydrophilic MXene nanosheets with hydrophobic elastomers for various applications such as stretchable devices. In this work, Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets of 3.5 ± 1.0 nm in thickness were chemically modified by a facile method to enhance compatibility with a common elastomer, nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed the presence of nitrogen in the MXene through the modification by allylamine, whilst Raman spectroscopy revealed an increase in =O groups, exposing more reactive sites on the nanosheet surface. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated the disappearance of –C=C bonds in the nanocomposites as well as the breakage of –C≡N bonds, confirming that allylamine bridged MXene nanosheets with the matrix molecules. X-ray diffraction study showed the complete exfoliation of nanosheets in the elastomer matrix at 2.0 vol%, as confirmed by TEM micrographs. At 14.0 vol% MXene, the Young’s modulus, tensile strength and thermal conductivity of NBR were improved by 700, 240 and 440%, respectively. A percolation threshold of electrical conductivity was obtained at 3.9 vol% of MXene while thermal conductivity at 19.6 vol% – 1.01 W·m−1K−1 – outperformed previous elastomer nanocomposites containing boron nitride, zinc oxide, graphene nanoplatelets and alumina.
