The following rate constants are reported: for 1,2‐H migration in carbene (II) (3.04 ±0.05)·106s‐1for ylide (IV) formation (8.86 ±0.10)·109M‐1s‐1for addition of (II) to Me2C=CMe2 and Bu‐CH=CH2 (1.32 ±0.06)·109and (2.10 ±0.05)·107M‐1s‐1respectively.

Laser flash photolysis or thermal decomposition of diazirines (I) leads to carbenes (II) which react with acetone (III) or benzaldehyde to give carbonyl ylides of type (IV).

The carbene (I), which is generated photochemically from the corresponding diazirine, shows 1,2‐hydrogen migration (k = 5.6·107/s at 25 °C) in the presence of pyridine to give a mixture of (III) and the ylide (IV).
