Abstract

An inorganic solar cell was constructed using a thin compact supporting layer of titania with BiOI nanoflakes as a functional material, a Pt/FTO cathode and a I3−/I− redox electrolyte. The efficiency of the cell was 1.03% but this leaves a lot of ground for improvement, which is mainly expected to come from the optimization of the BiOI nanostructure.

Abstract

Gold nanoparticles supported on TiO2 (1.2 mol %) catalyze, for the first time under heterogeneous conditions, the cycloisomerization of a series of 1,6-enynes in high yields. In several cases, the product selectivity differs significantly as compared to homogeneous Au(I)-catalysis. Based on product analysis and stereoisotopic studies it is proposed that the major or exclusive pathway involves a 5-exo cyclization mode to form stereoselectively gold cyclopropyl carbenes that undergo a single cleavage pathway, in contrast to homogeneous Au-catalysis where the double cleavage pathway operates substantially.

Abstract

A new proline-containing cycloheptapeptide, euryjanicin A (1), has been isolated from the marine sponge Prosuberites laughlini indigenous to Puerto Rico, and its structure established by an X-ray crystal structure determination. The absolute configuration of each amino acid residue was determined by Marfey’s method.

Abstract

ReacTiO(2)ns for rings: Gold nanoparticles supported on TiO(2) are used as a novel heterogeneous catalyst for the isomerization of epoxides to allylic alcohols by a concerted mechanism (see scheme). The reaction proceeds in high yields and the product selectivity is often remarkable.

Abstract

The mildly acidic zeolite NaY promotes a tandem dicyclization to a variety of a-geranyl-substituted carbonyl compounds to afford 1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,7-octahydronaphthalen-2-ols in moderate to good yields. In certain cases, the diastereoselection is remarkable. The dicyclization occurs by a 1,5-diene cyclization on the geranyl moiety to form selectively γ-cyclogeranyl-substituted carbonyl compounds, which further cyclize through an intermolecular carbonyl-ene reaction.

Abstract

An investigation of the chloroform extract of a Colombian specimen of Pseudopterogorgia kallos has led to the isolation of a novel rearranged cembrane, ciereszkolide (1). The structure of 1 is based on a new carbon skeleton that possesses several unusual structural features, namely, two butyrolactones [one 2(3H)- and one 2(5H)-furanone] across a 13-membered macrocycle, a (Z)-trisubstituted olefin, and a five-membered trans-fused cyclic ketal. The structure of 1 was resolved by interpretation of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data supported by HRFAB-MS, IR, UV, and a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
