A user-friendly, nickel-catalyzed reductive amidation of unactivated primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl bromides with isocyanates is described. This catalytic strategy offers an efficient synthesis of a wide range of aliphatic amides under mild conditions and with an excellent chemoselectivity profile while avoiding the use of stoichiometric and sensitive organometallic reagents.

Organometallic chemistry can be considered as a wide area of knowledge that combines concepts of classic organic chemistry, that is, based essentially on carbon, with molecular inorganic chemistry, especially with coordination compounds. Transition-metal methyl complexes probably represent the simplest and most fundamental way to view how these two major areas of chemistry combine and merge into novel species with intriguing features in terms of reactivity, structure, and bonding. Citing more than 500 bibliographic references, this review aims to offer a concise view of recent advances in the field of transition-metal complexes containing M−CH3 fragments. Taking into account the impressive amount of data that are continuously provided by organometallic chemists in this area, this review is mainly focused on results of the last five years. After a panoramic overview on M−CH3 compounds of Groups 3 to 11, which includes the most recent landmark findings in this area, two further sections are dedicated to methyl-bridged complexes and reactivity.

Teotihuacanin (1), an unusual rearranged clerodane diterpene with a new carbon skeleton containing a spiro-10/6 bicyclic system, was isolated from the leaves and flowers of Salvia amarissima. Its structure was determined through spectroscopic analyses. Its absolute configuration was established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 showed potent modulatory activity of multidrug resistance in vinblastine-resistant MCF-7 cancer cell line (reversal fold, RFMCF-7/Vin+ > 10703) at 25 μg/mL.

Improving the synthesis of complex organic molecules is essential for progress in many fields such as medicine, agrochemicals or materials. Since 2007, our laboratory has been focusing on the development of non-classical bond disconnections based on the use of small, energy-loaded organic molecules: hypervalent iodine reagents and strained rings. In this overview article, we report our progress since 2011 in these areas. The use of cyclic hypervalent iodine reagents has been extended to the C2-selective alkynylation of indoles, the domino cyclization alkynylation of allenes, the alkynylation of thiols and the azidation of carbonyl compounds. Amino-substituted aminocyclopropanes and aminocyclobutanes were used in [3+2] and [4+2] annulations to access nitrogen-rich building blocks, including nucleoside analogues. The first example of dynamic kinetic [3+2] annulation of aminocyclopropanes with both enol ethers and aldehydes was also reported.

The new approach is used for the highly efficient scale-up synthesis of the HSV-1 inhibitor Brivudine (BVDU) (IV).

The yield of the regioselective and scalable reaction sequence marginally depends on the substitution pattern of the substrates.

AgOTf·phosphoramidite complexes efficiently catalyze the enantioselective Mannich-type reaction between benzophenone-imine glycine methyl ester and N -tosyl aldimines in the absence of a base. The corresponding syn -adducts, which are the direct precursors of α,β-diamino acids, are obtained with moderate to good syn -diastereoselectivities (up to 9:1) and high enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee).

Homocoupling of arylboronic acids can be successfully achieved in commercial grade THF using [Pd(Phbz)(X)(PPh3)] palladacycles as catalysts (Phbz = N-phenylbenzaldimine; X = imidate or acetate). Symmetric biaryls were obtained in good yields working under mild conditions in an air atmosphere at room temperature. The reaction occurs without the addition of an exogenous base. The reaction conditions were optimized to provide the homocoupled products in excellent yield. Evidence for the transmetallation step being important for precatalyst activation has been gathered. The influence of electronic properties of the arylboronic acids on the outcome of the homocoupling reaction has been assessed through competition experiments.

In this Letter, we describe the synthesis of new donor-acceptor substituted cyclopropanes bearing various imido groups and their use in [3+2]-annulation reactions. A sequence of palladium-catalyzed vinylation and rhodium-catalyzed cyclopropanation gave access to the required cyclopropanes in only two steps and high overall yields. The obtained compounds were used successfully in the tin-catalyzed [3+2] annulation with enol ethers to give cyclopentylamine derivatives in 22–95% yield.

Cycloaddition reactions between N-alkyl and N-aryl-substituted maleimides and furan derivatives have been carried out using the ‘on-water’ methodology. Transformations are faster and products can easily be isolated by simple workup protocols, often in quantitative yields.

(Carbo) nucleoside derivatives constitute an important class of pharmaceuticals, yet there are only few convergent methods to access new analogues. Here, we report the first synthesis of thymine-, uracil-, and 5-fluorouracil-substituted diester donor-acceptor cyclopropanes and their use in the indium-and tin-catalyzed [3+2] annulations with aldehydes, ketones, and enol ethers. The obtained diester products could be easily decarboxylated and reduced to the corresponding alcohols. The method gives access to a broad range of new (carbo) nucleoside analogues in only four or five steps and will be highly useful for the synthesis of libraries of bioactive compounds.

Alternative energy technologies are greatly hindered by significant limitations in materials science. From low activity to poor stability, and from mineral scarcity to high cost, the current materials are not able to cope with the significant challenges of clean energy technologies. However, recent advances in the preparation of nanomaterials, porous solids, and nanostructured solids are providing hope in the race for a better, cleaner energy production. The present contribution critically reviews the development and role of mesoporosity in a wide range of technologies, as this provides for critical improvements in accessibility, the dispersion of the active phase and a higher surface area. Relevant examples of the development of mesoporosity by a wide range of techniques are provided, including the preparation of hierarchical structures with pore systems in different scale ranges. Mesoporosity plays a significant role in catalysis, especially in the most challenging processes where bulky molecules, like those obtained from biomass or highly unreactive species, such as CO2 should be transformed into most valuable products. Furthermore, mesoporous materials also play a significant role as electrodes in fuel and solar cells and in thermoelectric devices, technologies which are benefiting from improved accessibility and a better dispersion of materials with controlled porosity.

2-Amino-5-tert-butyl-2-oxazoline (ATBO, 2) was synthetized from 3,3-dimethyl-2-iodobutyl isocyanate via N-(3,3-dimethyl-2-iodobutyl) urea (1). The structures of compounds 1 and 2 are based on analytical and spectroscopic data. Compound 2 induced in rats and mice a peripheral antinociceptive effect through both spinal and supraspinal mechanisms. ATBO did not impair motor coordination or activity of the experimental animals.

The direct reactions between the precursors trans-[Pd(imidate)2(SMe2)2] and 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA) yield new water-soluble palladium(II) complexes trans-[Pd(imidate)2(PTA)2](imidate = succinimidate (suc) 1, maleimidate (mal) 2, phthalimidate (phthal) 3 or saccharinate (sacc) 4. The new complexes were revealed as excellent catalysts for environmentally friendly, efficient Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling of synthetically challenging substrates like the antiviral nucleoside analogue 5-iodo-2′-deoxyuridine in water as solvent.

The title reaction proceeds with both enol ethers and aldehydes using Cu and a commercially available bisoxazoline ligand.

Cyclization and annulation reactions initiated by ring-opening of small rings, especially cyclopropanes and cyclobutanes are now well-established in synthetic chemistry. Nevertheless, the potential of aminocyclopropanes and cyclobutanes, an important subclass for the synthesis of nitrogen-rich building blocks, has remained unexploited for a long time, despite important pioneering results. In the last decade, the situation has changed dramatically and new catalytic methods have emerged both for cyclization and annulation reactions. The purpose of this feature article is to present recent progress in this area, including our own work using donor-acceptor cyclopropanes and cyclobutanes.

The use of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) that act as all-in-one solvent-template-reactant systems offers an interesting green alternative to conventional syntheses in materials science. This Review aims to provide a comprehensive overview to emphasize the similarities and discrepancies between DES-assisted and conventional syntheses and rationalize certain green features that are common for the three DES-assisted syntheses described herein: one case of radical polymerization and two cases of polycondensations. For instance, DESs contain the precursor itself and some additional components that either provide certain functionality (e.g., drug delivery and controlled release, or electrical conductivity) to the resulting materials or direct their formation with a particular structure (e.g., hierarchical-type). Moreover, DESs provide a reaction medium, so polymerizations are ultimately carried out in a solventless fashion. This means that DES-assisted syntheses match green chemistry principles 2 and 5 because of the economy of reagents and solvents, whereas the functionality incorporated by the second component allows the need for any post-synthesis derivatization to be minimized or even fully avoided (principle 8). DESs also provide new precursors that favor more efficient polymerization (principle 6) by decreasing the energy input required for reaction progress. Finally, the use of mild reaction conditions in combination with the compositional versatility of DESs, which allows low-toxic components to be selected, is also of interest from the viewpoint of green chemistry because it opens up the way to design biocompatible and/or eco-friendly synthetic methods (principle 3).

Polycrystalline samples of Sr2-xLaxFeIrO6 with 0 ≤ x ≤ 2 are prepared by solid state reaction of stoichiometric mixtures of SrCO3, La2O3, Fe2O3, and Ir powder (air, 900 and 1100 °C for 24 h each).

An efficient synthesis of chiral N-tert-butanesulfinyl trifluoromethyl ketimines by using zirconium(IV) tert-butoxide is described. Compared to conventional titanium(IV) ethoxide, this protocol gave better result especially for sterically hindered ketones. In addition to the high reactivity, a high degree of enantiopurity of the N-tert-butanesulfinyl group is retained.

Great interest has arisen in the past years in the development of hierarchical zeolites, having at least two levels of porosities. Hierarchical zeolites show an enhanced accessibility, leading to improved catalytic activity in reactions suffering from steric and/or diffusional limitations. Moreover, the secondary porosity offers an ideal space for the deposition of additional active phases and for functionalization with organic moieties. However, the secondary surface represents a discontinuity of the crystalline framework, with a low connectivity and a high concentration of silanols. Consequently, hierarchical zeolites exhibit a less “zeolitic behaviour” than conventional ones in terms of acidity, hydrophobic/hydrophilic character, confinement effects, shape-selectivity and hydrothermal stability. Nevertheless, this secondary surface is far from being amorphous, which provides hierarchical zeolites with a set of novel features. A wide variety of innovative strategies have been developed for generating a secondary porosity in zeolites. In the present review, the different synthetic routes leading to hierarchical zeolites have been classified into five categories: removal of framework atoms, surfactant-assisted procedures, hard-templating, zeolitization of preformed solids and organosilane-based methods. Significant advances have been achieved recently in several of these alternatives. These include desilication, due to its versatility, dual templating with polyquaternary ammonium surfactants and framework reorganization by treatment with surfactant-containing basic solutions. In the last two cases, the materials so prepared show both mesoscopic ordering and zeolitic lattice planes. Likewise, interesting results have been obtained with the incorporation of different types of organosilanes into the zeolite crystallization gels, taking advantage of their high affinity for silicate and aluminosilicate species. Crystallization of organofunctionalized species favours the formation of organic–inorganic composites that, upon calcination, are transformed into hierarchical zeolites. However, in spite of this impressive progress in novel strategies for the preparation of hierarchical zeolites, significant challenges are still ahead. The overall one is the development of methods that are versatile in terms of zeolite structures and compositions, capable of tuning the secondary porosity properties, and being scaled up in a cost-effective way. Recent works have demonstrated that it is possible to scale-up easily the synthesis of hierarchical zeolites by desilication. Economic aspects may become a significant bottleneck for the commercial application of hierarchical zeolites since most of the synthesis strategies so far developed imply the use of more expensive procedures and reagents compared to conventional zeolites. Nevertheless, the use of hierarchical zeolites as efficient catalysts for the production of high value-added compounds could greatly compensate these increased manufacturing costs.

The development of synthetic routes for the tailoring of efficient silica-based heterogeneous catalysts functionalized with coordination complexes or metallic nanoparticles has become a important goal in chemistry. Most of these techniques have been based on postsynthetic treatments of preformed silicas. Nevertheless, there is an emerging approach, so-called sol–gel coordination chemistry, based on co-condensation during the sol–gel preparation of the hybrid material of the corresponding complex or nanoparticle modified with terminal trialkoxysilane groups with a silica source (such as tetraethoxysilane) and in the presence of an adequate surfactant. This method leads to the production of new mesoporous metal complex-silica materials, with the metallic functionality incorporated homogeneously into the structure of the hybrid material, improving the stability of the coordination complex (which is protected by the silica network) and reducing the leaching of the active phase. This technique also offers the actual possibility of functionalizing silica or other metal oxides for a wider range of applications, such as photonics, sensing, and biochemical functions.

The title catalyst is a universal precatalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of synthetically important coumaryl and pyrone halides (I) and (VII) with aryl and heteroaryl boronic acids.

The procedure is successfully applied to various substrates (alcohols, phenols, diols and triols) without affecting other functional groups and the protection is complete within a short time.

In an experimental permanent stroke model, we report here the contribution of ONO-1714 to brain damage prevention. Daily drug administration, twenty-one days prior to and two days after an experimental infarct, was performed by using mini-osmotic pumps (ALZET). Infarct volumes were assessed by image analysis of sequential coronal brain 1 mm(3) sections stained following the 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride histological staining technique. Results of this study provide evidence of a significant reduction of the brain lesion size, suggesting ONO-1714 as a potential neuroprotective agent in stroke patients. ONO-1714 was prepared in our laboratory following a procedure which resulted in the supply of the desired compound in an easy and excellent yield.

The present review is aimed at exploring the field of the catalytic cracking of polyolefins over solid acids, focusing on the role played by the catalysts toward the synthesis of fuels and chemicals as well as on the reaction systems currently used. Initially, conventional solid acids, such as micrometer sized crystal zeolites and silica–alumina, were used to establish the relationship among their activity, selectivity, and deactivation in the polyolefin cracking and the inherent properties of the catalysts (acidity, pore structure); however, the occurrence of steric and diffusional hindrances for entering the zeolite micropores posed by the bulky nature of the polyolefins highlighted the importance of having easily accessible acid sites, either through mesopores or by a high external surface area. This fact led toward the investigation of mesoporous materials (Al-MCM-41, Al-SBA-15) and nanozeolites, which allowed increasing the catalytic activities, especially for the case of polypropylene. The aim of this review is to provide an exposition of some of the most recent applications of deep-eutectic solvents (DESs) in the synthesis of polymers and related materials. We consider that there is plenty of room for the development of fundamental research in the field of DESs because their compositional flexibility makes the number of DESs susceptible of preparation unlimited and so do the range of properties that DESs can attain. Ultimately, these properties can be transferred into the resulting materials in terms of both tailored morphologies and compositions. Thus, interesting applications can be easily envisaged, especially in those fields in which the preparation of high-tech products via low cost processes is critical. We hope that the preliminary work surveyed in this review will encourage scientists to explore the promising perspectives offered by DESs.

Until recently, bacterial species that inhabit the human vagina have been primarily studied using organism-centric approaches. Understanding how these bacterial species interact with each other and the host vaginal epithelium is essential for a more complete understanding of vaginal health. Molecular approaches have already led to the identification of uncultivated bacterial taxa associated with bacterial vaginosis. Here, we review recent studies of the vaginal microbiome and discuss how culture-independent approaches, such as applications of next-generation sequencing, are advancing the field and shifting our understanding of how vaginal health is defined. This work may lead to improved diagnostic tools and treatments for women who suffer from, or are at risk for, vaginal imbalances, pregnancy complications, and sexually acquired infections. These approaches may also transform our understanding of how host genetic factors, physiological conditions (e.g., menopause), and environmental exposures (e.g., smoking, antibiotic usage) influence the vaginal microbiome.

The isomerization of allylic alcohols in water, catalytically mediated by water-soluble metal complexes, is an elegant synthetic procedure for obtaining carbonyl compounds in a completely atom-economical eco-benign process with useful applications in natural-product synthesis and bulk chemical processes. This overview aims to provide a view of the goals attained in catalyzed allylic alcohol isomerization in water and its promising applications.

The new title manganite (prepared by a citric acid route) is characterized by electron, X-ray, and neutron diffraction between 4 and 700 K, and conductivity and magnetization measurements.

The orthopalladated complexes are among the most representative Pd(II) compounds. They display a wide prospect of applications, but they are mainly known by their use as intermediates in metal-mediated organic synthesis. In this review we describe how palladacycles are used to build up new molecules through regioselective formation of C-halogen, C-O, C-N, C-P, C-S and C-C bonds, either under catalytic or stoichiometric conditions. This methodology is based on the selective incorporation of the Pd into the organic skeleton to be modified and subsequent reactivity of the Pd-C bond toward different substrates. In many cases this strategy is alternative or even competitive, improving standard organic methods. The most recent achievements of the last five years will be covered here, presenting only the most impressive results.

Novel materials and methods of synthesis in the field of energy conversion and economy are reported. The main goal is to prepare and characterize Li(4 − x)Mn(5 − 2x)Fe3xO12 compounds. These compounds crystallize in a spinel-type structure, AB2O4, in which the cationic location in the A and B sublattices drives the potential application of these materials in two current prominent research fields: magnetic refrigeration and lithium batteries. This solid solution is revealed as a tunable system that nicely permits a specific response to be highlighted, depending on the composition and particle size: the magnetocaloric effect or active electrochemical behavior.

Global warming issues and the medium-term depletion of fossil fuel reserves are stimulating researchers around the world to find alternative sources of energy and organic carbon. Biomass is considered by experts the only sustainable source of energy and organic carbon for our industrial society, and it has the potential to displace petroleum in the production of chemicals and liquid transportation fuels. However, the transition from a petroleum-based economy to one based on biomass requires new strategies since the petrochemical technologies, well-developed over the last century, are not valid to process the biomass-derived compounds. Unlike petroleum feedstocks, biomass derived platform molecules possess a high oxygen content that gives them low volatility, high solubility in water, high reactivity and low thermal stability, properties that favour the processing of these resources by catalytic aqueous-phase technologies at moderate temperatures. This tutorial review is aimed at providing a general overview of processes, technologies and challenges that lie ahead for a range of different aqueous-phase transformations of some of the key biomass-derived platform molecules into liquid fuels for the transportation sector and related high added value chemicals.

Mesoporous silica, which shows well-defined pore systems, tunable pore diameters (2–30 nm), narrow pore size distributions and high surface areas (>600 m2 g−1), is frequently modified using different methodologies (including in situ and post-synthetic strategies) to introduce various chemical functionalities useful in applications like catalysis, separation, drug delivery, and sensing. This contribution aims to provide a critical overview of the various strategies to incorporate chemical functionalities in mesoporous silica highlighting the advantages of the in situ methods based on the bottom-up construction of mesoporous silica containing various chemical functionalities in its structure.
