A one-pot, three-component coupling reaction of pyridine, β-keto amides, and sulfonyl chlorides yields 4-alkenyl-1,4-dihydropyridines under mild conditions via sequential activation of pyridine by the sulfonyl chloride and nucleophilic addition of in situ generated acylacetonitrile.

The characters of avoiding protonic acid and using a single inexpensive and environmentally benign catalyst make this method more valuable.

An alternative convenient approach for the bromination of various poly-substituted 4-pyridones has been developed via an oxidative nuclear bromination in the presence of sole pyridinium bromochromate (PBC).
