A newly synthesized one-dimensional (1D) hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) rhodium(II)-η(5)-semiquinone complex, [Cp*Rh(η(5)-p-HSQ-Me4)]PF6 ([1]PF6; Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; HSQ = semiquinone) exhibits a paraelectric-antiferroelectric second-order phase transition at 237.1 K. Neutron and X-ray crystal structure analyses reveal that the H-bonded proton is disordered over two sites in the room-temperature (RT) phase. The phase transition would arise from this proton disorder together with rotation or libration of the Cp* ring and PF6(-) ion. The relative permittivity εb' along the H-bonded chains reaches relatively high values (ca., 130) in the RT phase. The temperature dependence of (13)C CP/MAS NMR spectra demonstrates that the proton is dynamically disordered in the RT phase and that the proton exchange has already occurred in the low-temperature (LT) phase. Rate constants for the proton exchange are estimated to be 10(-4)-10(-6) s in the temperature range of 240-270 K. DFT calculations predict that the protonation/deprotonation of [1](+) leads to interesting hapticity changes of the semiquinone ligand accompanied by reduction/oxidation by the π-bonded rhodium fragment, producing the stable η(6)-hydroquinone complex, [Cp*Rh(3+)(η(6)-p-H2Q-Me4)](2+) ([2](2+)), and η(4)-benzoquinone complex, [Cp*Rh(+)(η(4)-p-BQ-Me4)] ([3]), respectively. Possible mechanisms leading to the dielectric response are discussed on the basis of the migration of the protonic solitons comprising of [2](2+) and [3], which would be generated in the H-bonded chain.

A family of isolable solvent separated organoscandium methyl cat- ions stabilized by b-diketiminato li- gands (Ar)NCA3)CHCA3)N(Ar) (Ar = 2,6-iPr-C6H3 ,L Me ) has been pre- pared by reaction of L Me ScR2 with (CPh3)(BA6F5)4) in the presence of an arene solvent. Arenes such as bromo- benzene, benzene, toluene, para-xylene and mesitylene bind the scandium center in an h 6 -bonding mode, yielding cations 1a -e. Their solution and solid- state structures have been explored using multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Mechanistic studies on arene exchange reactions and the insertion of diphenylacetylene indicate that these processes occur via arene intermediates of lower hapticity, followed by binding of the incoming re- agent. Which of the two steps is rate limiting depends on the arene being displaced and/or the nature of the in- coming substrate. The experiments present a unified view of these mecha- nisms, which have relevance to propa- gation processes in olefin polymeri- zations mediated by such cations.

Four differently charged states of synfacial cyclooctatetraene (cot)-bridged diruthenium complexes (1–4) can be assigned to four different molecular structures as shown by X-ray structure analysis. For the first time, a change in hapticity of the cot ligand is observed which is caused by a single electron transfer.

The biscyclopentadienyldicarbonyl derivatives of zirconium(II) and hafnium(II) ([MCp2(CO)2]; MZr, Hf) promote the reductive coupling of coordinated carbon monoxide to give, in the presence of N,N-dialkylcarbamtes of the tetravalent metals [M(O2CNR2)4], the ketenylidene complexes [M3Cp2(μ2-CCO)-(μ3-O)(O2CNR2)6] (1 a: MZr, REt; 1 b: MZr, RiPr; 2: MHf, RiPr). The yields of the isolated zirconium complexes are as high as 60%, while that of the hafnium derivative is 40%. The X-ray crystal structure analysis of 1 b shows that it consists of trinuclear molecules, with the three zirconium atoms held together by the bidentate C2O ligand, by the tridentate bridging oxide and by the bidentate carbamato groups. Labelling experiments with [ZrCp2(13CO)2] show that the ketenylidene ligand originates from the coordinated CO groups. These ketenylidene complexes, which are rare examples of compounds containing a CCO but no CO ligand, are characterized by an intense IR band at about 2015 cm−1, associated with the bridging C2O ligand. The ketenylidene group of 1 b was readily removed and replaced by a bidentate μ-oxo ligand of the same hapticity by reaction with carbon dioxide or acetone or by thermal decomposition. The resulting product [Zr3Cp2(μ-O)(μ3-O)-(O2CNiPr2)6] (3) crystallizes in the same space group as 1 b and with similar cell constants and bond parameters.
