A novel open-cage fullerene derivative having a C69O framework was synthesized, demonstrating that the reactivity of an open-cage C70 with a tetraketone moiety was quite different compared with its C60 analogue. The functionalization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with arynes has received substantial attention because it offers a way to create π-extended PAHs as well as compounds containing rigid 3D structures. Herein, we report cycloadditions of benzyne to a π-extended tetracene with a twisted framework. Under kinetic control, this reaction furnished mono- and bisadducts via concerted [4+2] cycloadditions, which was supported by theoretical studies. The bisadduct exhibits blue emission in the solid state on account of the steric protection arising from the two [2.2.2] bicyclic moieties.

m-Benzene-linked derivatives of partially oxygen-bridged triphenylamine were designed and synthesized as transparent hole-transporting materials, which show absorption bands only in the UV region (–425 nm). Vacuum-deposited films of these compounds retain amorphous states even after heating at 160 °C and exhibit good hole mobility in the same order to the directly connected dimer.

The organic D–π–A dyes HS1 and HS2 were synthesized as low-band-gap sensitizers with diketopyrrolopyrrole and boryl-substituted thienylthiazole moieties as the π-spacer and acceptor units, respectively. Dye-sensitized solar cells containing these dyes exhibited high JSC values (≤19.8 mA cm−2) as the absorption of HS1 and HS2 extends into the NIR region.

Two donor–acceptor-type (D–A-type) molecules containing thiazole-fused benzothiadiazole (BT) as the acceptor moiety were designed and synthesized.
