Purple colored poly(1,4-naphthylene) films have been prepared by electrochemical polymerization of naphthalene using a composite electrolyte of aluminum chloride and copper(I) chloride. The conductivity and the decomposition temperature of the as-grown film were ca. 10−6 S cm−1 and 546 °C, respectively.

Homo-coupling polycondensation of aromatic compounds bearing two (trimethylsilyl)ethynyl groups mediated by copper(I) chloride in DMF gives conjugated poly(arylenebutadiynylene)s in up to 94% yield with molecular weight of 4000–8900 (Mw/Mn = 1.78–2.09).

Polymerization of benzene to poly(1,4-phenylene) has been succeeded under oxygen using an aluminium chloride-copper(I) chloride catalyst. Treatment of benzene with aluminium chloride/copper(I) chloride (3/1 molar ratio) under oxygen at 70 °C gave poly(1,4-phenylene) in 187% yield based on the molar quantity of copper(I) chloride. Extra addition of aluminium chloride in the course of the reaction increased the yield dramatically from 187% to more than 600%.

An active carbon-supported copper(I) chloride is prepared as a solid adsorbent for carbon monoxide. It adsorbs carbon monoxide at 20°C under 1 atm and releases almost all of the adsorbed carbon monoxide by elevating the temperature to 120°C under 1 atm, or by reducing the pressure to 0.4 mmHg at 20°C.

Methyl dichlorofluoroacetate, easily prepared from methyl trichloroacetate and antimony(III) fluoride, underwent the reductive coupling–elimination reaction with carbonyl compounds in the presence of zinc(0), a catalytic amount of copper(I) chloride, acetic anhydride, and molecular sieves to give the corresponding (Z)-α-fluoro-α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid methyl esters in high yields.

Solutions composed of aluminium copper(I) chloride and 1,3-diphenylpropane, 1,2-diphenylethane, diphenyl ether or styrene oligomer rapidly absorbed carbon monoxide at 60–70 °C under 1 atm (CO:N2=0.94:0.06). The absorbing power of the solutions remained unchanged even after the contacts with a nitrogen gas containing 10 mol% water to the charged copper(I) chloride.

A selective adsorbent for ethylene is prepared by stirring 15 g of copper (I) chloride and 10 g of polystyrene resin having primary and secondary amino groups in 1:1 (v/v) acetonitrile–water mixture, followed by removal of the liquid phase. The adsorbent adsorbs 15.0 mmol of ethylene at 20 °C, 1 atm, which is 7.9 fold larger than the value (1.9 mmol) for ethane.

N,N,N′,N′-Tetramethylethylenediamine, N,N,N′,N′-tetraethylethylenediamine, and N,N,N′-trimethylethylenediamine are stirred with copper(I) chloride in methanol at a charged molar ratio of unity, resulting in homogeneous solutions of the copper(I) chloride-diamine complexes. The solutions, respectively, absorb 11.0, 4.8, and 11.3 mmol of ethylene at 20 °C under 1 atm.
