The high risk of CO poisoning justifies the need for indoor air quality control and warning systems based on the detection of low concentrations (ppm-ppb) of CO. Cobalt corrole complexes selectively bind CO vs. O 2 , CO 2 , N 2 , opening new fields of applications. By combining the CO chemisorption properties of cobalt corroles with the known sorption capacity of MOFs, we hope to obtain high performance sensing materials for CO detection. In addition, the exposed metal sites of MOFs lead to CO 2 physisorption, allowing the co-detection of CO and CO 2 . In this work, PCN-222, a stable Zr-based MOF made from Ni(TCPP) with natural vacancies, has been used as a porous matrix for the grafting of electron-poor metallocorroles. The materials were characterized by powder XRD, SEM and optical microscopy, BET analyses and gas adsorption measurements at 298 K. No degradation of the crystalline structure of PCN-222 was observed. At 1 atm, the adsorbed CO (g) volumes measured for the best materials were 12.15 cm 3  g -1 and 14.01 cm 3  g -1 for CoCorr2@PCN-222 and CoCorr3@PCN-222 respectively, and both materials exhibited high CO chemisorption and selectivity against O 2 , N 2 , and CO 2 at low pressure due to the highest energy of the chemisorption process vs physisorption., (© 2024 The Authors. A series of open-chain pentapyrroles and sapphyrins with highly electron-withdrawing substituents (i.e., CN, CF 3 , or CO 2 Me) on the meso-phenyl rings was synthesized and characterized as to the spectral properties, protonation reactions, and electrochemistry in non-aqueous media. The investigated compounds are represented as (Ar) 4 PPyH 3 and (Ar) 4 SapH 3 where PPy and Sap correspond to the tri-anion of the open-chain pentapyrrole and sapphyrin, respectively, and Ar=p-CNPh, p-CF 3 Ph, or p-CO 2 MePh. UV/Vis and 1 H NMR spectroscopy as well as mass spectrometry data are given for the confirmation of the structures for the newly synthesized compounds. An X-ray structure for one of the pentapyrroles, that is, (p-CF 3 Ph) 4 PPyH 3 (2), is also presented. The protonation processes were examined by UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy during the titration of the compounds with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) in CH 2 Cl 2 . Equilibrium constants for the protonation reactions were calculated by using both the Hill equation and the mole ratio method. The protonation-initiated conversion of pentapyrroles to sapphyrins upon oxidation was also investigated. Cyclic voltammetry was used to measure the redox potentials in CH 2 Cl 2 , PhCN, and/or pyridine (Py). Electrochemical properties, protonation constants, and chemical reactions of the six compounds in the two series were then analyzed as a function of the solvent properties and the type of the electron-withdrawing groups on the meso-phenyl rings., (© 2017 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. An original corrole-containing polyad for S 1 energy transfer, in which one zinc(II)-porphyrin donor is linked to two free-base corrole acceptors by a truxene linker, is reported. This polyad exhibits a rapid zinc(II)-porphyrin*→free-base corrole transfer (4.83×10 10  s -1 ; 298 K), even faster than the tautomerization in the excited state processes taking advantage of the good electronic communication provided by the truxene bridge. Importantly, the energy transfer process shows approximately 3-fold selectivity for one corrole N-H tautomer over the other even at low temperature (77 K). This selectivity is due to the difference in the J-integral being effective in both the Förster and Dexter mechanisms. The synthesis of dyad and triad aza-BODIPY-porphyrin systems in two steps starting from an aryl-substituted aza-BODIPY chromophore is described. The properties of the resulting aza-BODIPY-porphyrin conjugates have been extensively investigated by means of electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, and absorption/emission spectroscopy. Herein the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, two-photon absorption and electrochemical properties of 3,6-disubstituted carbazole tweezers is reported. A dimer resulting from a Glaser homocoupling was isolated during a Sonogashira coupling reaction between a diethynyl-carbazole spacer and a 5-bromo-triarylporphyrin and the properties of this original compound were compared with the 3,6-disubstituted carbazole bisporphyrin tweezers. The dyads reported herein present a two-photon absorption maximum at 920 nm with two-photon absorption cross-section in the 1200 GM range. Despite a strong linear absorption in the Soret region and moderate fluorescence quantum yield, they both lead to a high brightness reaching 30 000 M(-1)  cm(-1) ., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The click chemistry synthesis and photophysical properties, notably photo-induced energy and electron transfers between the central core and the peripheral chromophores of a series of artificial special pair-dendron systems (dendron = G1, G2, G3; Gx = zinc(II) tetra-meso-arylporphyrin-containing polyimides) built upon a central core of dimethylxanthenebis(metal(II) porphyrin) (metal = zinc, copper), are reported. The dendrons act as singlet and triplet energy acceptors or donors, depending on the dendrimeric systems. The presence of the paramagnetic d(9) copper(II) in the dendrimers promotes singlet-triplet energy transfer from the zinc(II) tetra-meso-arylporphyrin to the bis(copper(II) porphyrin) unit and slow triplet-triplet energy transfer from the central bis(copper(II) porphyrin) fragment to the peripheral zinc(II) tetra-meso-arylporphyrin. If bis(zinc(II) porphyrin) is the central core, evidence for chain folding is observed; this is unambiguously demonstrated by the presence of triplet-triplet energy transfer in the heterobimetallic systems, a process that can only occur at short distances., (Copyright © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Zinc bis-porphyrin molecular tweezers composed of a N(4) spacer bound through pyridyl units to the meso position of porphyrins were synthesized, and the tweezers are closed by the coordination of a copper(II) ion inside the spacer ligand. The effect of the π-π interaction between the porphyrin rings in the closed conformation on the absorption spectra of multi-electron oxidized species and the reduction potentials were clarified by chemical and electrochemical oxidation of the closed form of the zinc bis-porphyrin molecular tweezers in comparison with the open form without copper(II) ion and the corresponding porphyrin monomer. The shifts in redox potentials and absorption spectrum of the porphyrin dication indicate a strong electronic interaction between the two oxidized porphyrins in the closed form, whereas there is little interaction between them in the neutral form. The dynamics of copper(II) ion coordination and subsequent electron transfer was examined by using a stopped-flow UV/Vis spectroscopic technique. A trefoil-like porphyrin trimer linked by triphenylamine (TPA-TPZn(3)) was synthesized. A three-electron oxidation of TPA-TPZn(3) forms a radical trication (TPA-TPZn(3)(3+)), in which each porphyrin ring undergoes a one-electron oxidation. The radical trication TPA-TPZn(3)(3+) spontaneously dimerizes to afford (TPA-TPZn(3))(2)(6+) in CH(2)Cl(2) . The characteristic charge-resonance band due to the charge delocalization over the π system of (TPA-TPZn(3))(2)(6+) was observed in the NIR region. The initial oxidation potential of TPA-TPZn(3) is negatively shifted relative to that of the corresponding monomer porphyrin, which results from the stabilization of the oxidized state of TPA-TPZn(3) associated with the dimerization. The thermodynamic parameters (i.e., ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG) for the formation of (TPA-TPZn(3))(2)(6+) were determined by measuring Vis/NIR spectra at various temperatures. The formation constant of (TPA-TPZn(3))(2)(6+) is significantly larger than that of the radical cation dimer of the corresponding monomer porphyrin (e.g., over 2000-fold at 233 K). The electronic states were investigated using EPR spectroscopic analysis. The role of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinatocobalt(II) ([Co(tpp)]) as a catalyst on molecular oxygen (O(2)) reduction by ferrocene (Fc) and its two derivatives, 1,1'-dimethylferrocene (DFc) and decamethylferrocene (DMFc) at a polarized water|1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) interface has been studied. The water|DCE interface essentially acts as a proton pump controlled by the Galvani potential difference across the interface, driving the proton transfer from water to DCE. [Co(tpp)] catalyzed O(2) reduction by Fc, DFc and DMFc is then followed to produce hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)). The catalytic mechanism is similar to that proposed by Fukuzumi et al. for bulk reactions. This interfacial system provides a platform for a very efficient collection of H(2)O(2), by extraction immediately after its formation in DCE to the adjacent water phase, thus decreasing the possibility of degradation and further reaction with ferrocene derivatives.

pi-pi assisted: Photoinduced electron transfer from cofacial porphyrin dimers to electron acceptors is prominently accelerated, whereas the back electron transfer is decelerated, relative to the corresponding porphyrin monomer (see figure).The radical cation of zinc tetrapentylporphyrin is dimerized with an excess of the neutral counterpart to form the dimer radical cation in which the unpaired electron is delocalized over both porphyrin rings. The dimeric radical cation exhibits an NIR absorption spectrum characteristic of weak pi-bond formation between the porphyrin rings. When cofacial porphyrin dimers, linked by different spacers, are oxidized such pi-bond formation between the porphyrin rings is also recognized in cyclic voltammetry, and Vis/NIR and ESR spectroscopic measurements. The dynamics of photoinduced electron transfer from the triplet excited states of cofacial porphyrin dimers to a series of electron acceptors were investigated by using laser flash photolysis measurements and compared with the porphyrin monomer. The rates of photoinduced electron-transfer reactions of cofacial porphyrin dimers are prominently accelerated compared with the reference monomer. The driving-force dependence of the rate constants of photoinduced electron-transfer reactions was analyzed in light of the Marcus theory of electron transfer to afford the reorganization energies of electron transfer (lambda). The lambda values of cofacial porphyrin dimers are significantly smaller than those of the porphyrin monomer when compared at the same driving force of the photoinduced electron transfer. The lambda values increase linearly with an increase in the driving force of the photoinduced electron transfer. This is accompanied by an increase in the distance between electron donor and acceptor molecules, where the electron transfer occurs. The enhanced electron-transfer properties of cofacial porphyrin dimers, in relation with the important role of the special pair in the photosynthetic reaction center, result from the smaller reorganization energy (lambda) together with the larger driving force of the photoinduced electron transfer due to the pi-electron delocalization in the dimer radical cations.

Pacman-type face-to-face zinc-porphyrin-fullerene dyads have been newly synthesized and studied. Owing to the close proximity of the donor and acceptor entities, strong pi-pi intramolecular interactions between the porphyrin and fullerene entities resulted in modulating the spectral and electrochemical properties of the dyads. New absorption and emission bands that correspond to the charge-transfer interactions were observed in the near-IR region. Time-resolved transient absorption studies revealed efficient photoinduced electron transfer from the singlet excited porphyrin to the fullerene entity. The rate constants for photoinduced electron transfer are analyzed in terms of the Marcus theory of electron transfer, which afforded a large electron coupling matrix element (V=140 cm(-1)) for the face-to-face dyads. As a consequence of the large charge-recombination driving force in the Marcus inverted region, a relatively long lifetime of the charge-separated state has been achieved.
