Gd 3+ complexes have been shown to undergo unusual slow magnetic relaxation processes similar to those of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), even though Gd 3+ does not exhibit strong magnetic anisotropy. To reveal the origin of the slow magnetic relaxation of Gd 3+ complexes, we have investigated the magnetic properties and heat capacities of two Gd 3+ -phthalocyaninato triple-decker complexes, one of which has intramolecular Gd 3+ -Gd 3+ interactions and the other does not. It was found that the Gd 3+ -Gd 3+ interactions accelerate the magnetic relaxation processes. In addition, magnetically diluted samples, prepared by doping a small amount of the Gd 3+ complexes into a large amount of diamagnetic Y 3+ complexes, underwent dual magnetic relaxation processes. A detailed dynamic magnetic analysis revealed that the coexistence of spin-lattice relaxation and phonon-bottleneck processes is the origin of the dual magnetic relaxation processes., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The reaction of Fe(OAc) 2 and Hbpypz with neutral TCNQ results in the formation of [Fe 2 (bpypz) 2 (TCNQ) 2 ](TCNQ) 2 (1), in which Hbpypz=3,5-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazole and TCNQ=7,7',8,8'-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane. Crystal packing of 1 with uncoordinated TCNQ and π-π stacking of bpypz - ligands produces an extended two-dimensional supramolecular coordination assembly. Temperature dependence of the dc magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements indicate that 1 undergoes an abrupt spin crossover (SCO) with thermal spin transition temperatures of 339 and 337 K for the heating and cooling modes, respectively, resulting in a thermal hysteresis of 2 K. Remarkably, the temperature dependence of dc electrical transport exhibits a transition that coincides with thermal SCO, demonstrating the thermally induced magnetic and electrical bistability of 1, strongly correlating magnetism with electrical conductivity. The development of magnetic molecules with long spin reversal/decoherence times highly depends on the understanding of relaxation behavior under different external conditions. Herein, a magnetic study on a Ru III complex (1) is presented. Detailed analysis of the relaxation time and the magneto-heat capacity data suggests that the resonant phonon trapping process dominates the magnetic relaxation in the crystalline sample of 1, slowing down the spin relaxation rate, as further confirmed by the measurements on a ground sample and frozen solution. Here we report the synthesis, structure and detailed characterisation of three n-membered oxovanadium rings, Nan [(V=O)n Nan (H2 O)n (α, β, or γ-CD)2 ]⋅m H2 O (n=6, 7, or 8), prepared by the reactions of (V=O)SO4 ⋅x H2 O with α, β, or γ-cyclodextrins (CDs) and NaOH in water. Their alternating heterometallic vanadium/sodium cyclic core structures were sandwiched between two CD moieties such that O-Na-O groups separated the neighbouring vanadyl ions. A newly synthesized one-dimensional (1D) hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) rhodium(II)-η(5)-semiquinone complex, [Cp*Rh(η(5)-p-HSQ-Me4)]PF6 ([1]PF6; Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; HSQ = semiquinone) exhibits a paraelectric-antiferroelectric second-order phase transition at 237.1 K. Neutron and X-ray crystal structure analyses reveal that the H-bonded proton is disordered over two sites in the room-temperature (RT) phase. The phase transition would arise from this proton disorder together with rotation or libration of the Cp* ring and PF6(-) ion. The relative permittivity εb' along the H-bonded chains reaches relatively high values (ca., 130) in the RT phase. The temperature dependence of (13)C CP/MAS NMR spectra demonstrates that the proton is dynamically disordered in the RT phase and that the proton exchange has already occurred in the low-temperature (LT) phase. Rate constants for the proton exchange are estimated to be 10(-4)-10(-6) s in the temperature range of 240-270 K. DFT calculations predict that the protonation/deprotonation of [1](+) leads to interesting hapticity changes of the semiquinone ligand accompanied by reduction/oxidation by the π-bonded rhodium fragment, producing the stable η(6)-hydroquinone complex, [Cp*Rh(3+)(η(6)-p-H2Q-Me4)](2+) ([2](2+)), and η(4)-benzoquinone complex, [Cp*Rh(+)(η(4)-p-BQ-Me4)] ([3]), respectively. Possible mechanisms leading to the dielectric response are discussed on the basis of the migration of the protonic solitons comprising of [2](2+) and [3], which would be generated in the H-bonded chain., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Four dinuclear Ln(III)-Cu(II) complexes with Ln=Tb (1), Dy (2), Ho (3), and Er (4) were synthesized to investigate the relationship between their respective magnetic anisotropies and ligand-field geometries. These complexes were crystallographically isostructural, and a uni-axial ligand field was achieved by using three phenoxo oxygen groups. Complexes 1 and 2 displayed typical single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviors, of which the out-of-phase susceptibilities were observed in the temperature range of 1.8-5.0 K (1) and 1.8-20.0 K (2). The Cole-Cole plots exhibited a semicircular shape with α parameters in the range of 0.08-0.18 (2.6-4.0 K) and 0.07-0.24 (3.5-7.0 K). The energy barriers Δ/k(B) were estimated from the Arrhenius plots to be 32.9(4) K for 1 and 26.0(5) K for 2. Complex 3 displayed a slow magnetic relaxation below 3.0 K, whereas complex 4 did not show any frequency-dependent behavior for both in-phase and out-of-phase susceptibilities, which indicates that easy-axis anisotropy was absent. The temperature dependence of the dc susceptibilities for the field-aligned samples of 1-3 revealed that the χ(M) T value continuously increased as the temperature was lowered, which indicates the presence of low-lying Stark sublevels with the highest |J(z) | values. In contrast, complex 4 displayed a smaller and temperature-independent χ(M) T value, which also indicates that easy-axis anisotropy was absent. Simultaneous analyses were carried out for 1-3 to determine the magnetic anisotropy parameters on the basis of the Hamiltonian that considers B(2) (0) , B(4) (0) , and B(6) (0) ., (Copyright © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A novel topologically frustrated pentanuclear cluster helicate [{Cu(II)(μ-L)(3)}(2)Cu(II) (3)(μ(3)-OH)](3+) (L(-)=3,5-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazolate) has been synthesized and characterized. This cluster has a helical arrangement of ligands around the central metal core. Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions are essential components to observe a gradual magnetization and forbidden transitions of high-field/multi-frequency (HF/MF)-ESR. The origin of the magnetic anisotropy of this compound is influenced by its helical spin structure, and consequently, the Cu(5)-cluster helicate introduces a unique magnetic anisotropy. This observation is a direct evidence of the topological part of the new spin phase in a magnetic system.

The different thermally induced intermolecular electron transfer (IET) processes that can take place in the series of complexes [M(Cat-N-BQ)(Cat-N-SQ)]/[M(Cat-N-BQ)(2)], for which M = Co (2), Fe (3) and Ni(4), and Cat-N-BQ and Cat-N-SQ denote the mononegative (Cat-N-BQ(-)) or dinegative (Cat-N-SQ(2-)) radical forms of the tridentate Schiff-base ligand 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-quinone-1-(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)imine, have been studied by variable-temperature UV/Vis and NMR spectroscopies. Depending on the metal ion, rather different behaviors are observed. Complex 2 has been found to be one of the few examples so far reported to exhibit the coexistence of two thermally induced electron transfer processes, ligand-to-metal (IET(LM)) and ligand-to-ligand (IET(LL)). IET(LL) was only found to take place in complex 3, and no IET was observed for complex 4. Such experimental studies have been combined with ab initio wavefunction-based CASSCF/CASPT2 calculations. Such a strategy allows one to solicit selectively the speculated orbitals and to access the ground states and excited-spin states, as well as charge-transfer states giving additional information on the different IET processes.

The reaction of N-(2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzyl)iminodiethanol (=H3(5-NO2-hbide)) with Mn(OAc)2* 4 H2O in methanol, followed by recrystallization from 1,2-dichloroethane, yielded a wheel-shaped single-molecule magnet (SMM) of [MnII 3MnIII 4(5-NO2-hbide)6].5 C2H4Cl2 (1). In 1, seven manganese ions are linked by six tri-anionic ligands and form the wheel in which the two manganese ions on the rim and the one in the center are MnII and the other four manganese ions are MnIII ions. Powder magnetic susceptibility measurements showed a gradual increase with chimT values as the temperature was lowered, reaching a maximum value of 53.9 emu mol(-1) K. Analyses of magnetic susceptibility data suggested a spin ground state of S=19/2. The zero-field splitting parameters of D and B 0 4 were estimated to be -0.283(1) K and -1.64(1)x10(-5) K, respectively, by high-field EPR measurements (HF-EPR). The anisotropic parameters agreed with those estimated from magnetization and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. AC magnetic susceptibility measurements showed frequency-dependent in- and out-of-phase signals, characteristic data for an SMM, and an Arrhenius plot of the relaxation time gave a re-orientation energy barrier (DeltaE) of 18.1 K and a pre-exponential factor of 1.63x10(-7) s. Magnetization experiments on aligned single crystals below 0.7 K showed a stepped hysteresis loop, confirming the occurrence of quantum tunneling of the on magnetization (QTM). QTM was, on the other hand, suppressed by rapid sweeps of the magnetic field even at 0.5 K. The sweep-rate dependence of the spin flips can be understood by considering the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) model.

High-spin molecules with easy-axis magnetic anisotropy show slow magnetic relaxation of spin-flipping along the axis of magnetic anisotropy and are called single-molecule magnets (SMMs). SMMs behave as molecular-size permanent magnets at low temperature and magnetic relaxation occurs by quantum tunneling processes; such molecules are promising candidates for use in quantum devices. We first discuss intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions for preparing high-spin molecules. Second, we determine the magnetic anisotropy for single metal ions with d(n) configurations and discuss how molecular anisotropy arises from single-ion anisotropy of the assembled component metal ions.

The reaction of 1/3 equivalent of CuCl2.2H2O with MnCl2.4H2O and 5-bromo-2-salicylideneamino-1-propanol (H(2)5-Br-sap) in methanol gave dark brown crystals of [MnIIICuIICl(5-Br-sap)2(MeOH)] (1). Complex 1 has an alkoxo-bridged dinuclear core of MnIII and CuII ions, which have elongated octahedral and square-planar coordination geometries, respectively. In dc magnetic susceptibility measurements, chi(m)T values increased as the temperature was lowered, followed by a sudden decrease below 20 K. This behavior is indicative of the occurrence of intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions, and fitting gave an S=5/2 spin ground state with an exchange coupling constant J(MnCu) of +78 cm(-1). Magnetization data collected as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field were analyzed by using a spin Hamiltonian with isotropic Zeeman and axial zero-field splitting (ZFS) terms, and a negative D(5/2) value (-1.86 cm(-1)) was obtained. A high-field EPR (HFEPR) spectrum (342.0 GHz) at 4.2 K was composed of four peaks, and two additional peaks at higher magnetic field appeared as the temperature was increased. The temperature dependences in the HFEPR spectra are indicative of a negative D(5/2) value, and fitting of the data gave D(5/2)=-1.81 cm(-1). In the ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, frequency dependent in-phase (chi(m)') and out-of-phase (chi(m)'') signals with peak maxima at 0.7-1.5 K were observed and small peaks below 0.7 K appeared. The ac susceptibility data supports that 1 is a single-molecule magnet (SMM). Arrhenius plots for the chi(m)'' peaks from 0.7-1.5 K gave the re-orientation energy barrier (DeltaE) of 10.5 K with a pre-exponential factor of 8.2x10(-8) s.
