The topic of cardiovascular hazards from multiple metal (loid)s exposures has attracted widespread attention. Here, we measured concentrations of twenty-three urinary metal (loid)s and mean platelet volume (MPV), an early cardiovascular damage biomarker, for 3396 Chinese adults. We aimed to comprehensively assess the associations of single metal (loid) and multiple metal (loid)s (as a mixture) with MPV by combined use of five statistical methods, including general linear models, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), weight quartile sum (WQS) regression, quantile g-computation (QGC), and adaptive elastic network regression (AENR). And based on that, we hope to provide insight into assessing the health effect of multipollutant exposure. After adjustment for potential covariates, at least three methods jointly suggested that of twenty-three metal (loid)s, iron, arsenic, and antimony were positively while aluminum, tungsten, and thallium were inversely associated with MPV. The environmental risk score of metal (loid)s construed by AENR was significantly positively associated with MPV, while the association between overall twenty-three metal (loid)s mixture and MPV was neutralized to be insignificant in QGC and BKMR. Conclusively, single metal (loid) may be inversely (iron, arsenic, and antimony) and positively (aluminum, tungsten, and thallium) associated with early cardiovascular damage, while the association of overall twenty-three metal (loid)s mixture with MPV was insignificant when concurrent exposures exist. Arsenic and antimony are widely distributed toxic metalloids in aquatic environments. However, their partitioning behaviors in the sediment profile remain not well understood. Here, partitioning behaviors, diffusive fluxes, as well as the ecological risks of As and Sb in the sediment-porewater profile system in the tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) were investigated. As and Sb showed markedly different spatial variations in the longitudinal profiles of both porewater and sediment samples. Specifically, the concentration of As showed an accumulation trend with depth, while that of Sb showed a relatively complicated trend. Further, As showed lower sediment-porewater partitioning coefficient (K d ) values, suggesting that it had a relatively lower sediment affinity and a higher mobility than Sb. Its residual fraction (30%-60%) was also lower than that of Sb. This phenomenon could be attributed to the chemical fractions of the trace metals and the pH value of the sediments. Furthermore, the K d values corresponding to As were influenced by both the residual fraction (r = 0.338, p < 0.05) and the exchangeable fraction (r = -0.643, p < 0.01), while those corresponding to Sb were only influenced by pH. Additionally, even though these two trace metals showed low ecological and mobility risks, the diffusive fluxes at the sediment-water interface suggested that the sediment acted as a source of As and a sink for Sb relative to the overlying water. This study indicated that As and Sb had different partitioning behaviors and release risks in the sediment-porewater profile system, enhanced the understanding the transport and fate of As and Sb in the aquatic environment., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Heavy metals play an important role in inducing fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) related cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, most of the past researches concerned the associations between CVD mortality and the PM 2.5 mass, which may not reveal the CVD mortality risk contributed by heavy metals in PM 2.5 . This study explored the correlations between individual heavy metals in PM 2.5 and CVD mortality, identified the heavy metals that significantly contribute to PM 2.5 -related CVD, heart disease (HD), and cerebrovascular disease (CEV) mortality, and attempted to establish corresponding source control measures. Over a 2-year study period, PM 2.5 was sampled daily in Guangzhou, China and analyzed for heavy metals. The airborne pollution and weather data, along with CVD, HD, and CEV mortality, were obtained at the same time. The excess risk (ER) of mortality was linked to the individual heavy metals using a distributed lag non-linear model. PM 2.5 and most heavy metals showed significant correlations with the CVD, HD, and CEV mortality; the largest cumulative ER (LCER) values of CVD mortality associated with an interquartile range increase in the levels of lead, cadmium, arsenic, selenium, antimony, nickel, thallium, aluminum, iron, and PM 2.5 were 2.43%, 2.23%, 1.66%, 2.39%, 1.19%, 1.21%, 2.69%, 3.29%, 1.74%, and 2.40%, respectively. Most heavy metals showed comparable LCER values of HD and CEV mortality. Heavy metals with the addition of PM 2.5 were divided into three groups following their LCER values; lead, cadmium, arsenic, antimony, thallium, zinc, aluminum, and iron, whose contributions were greater than or equal to the average effect of the PM 2.5 components, should be limited on a priority basis. These findings indicated that heavy metals play roles in the CVD, HD, and CEV mortality risk of PM 2.5 , and specific control measures which aimed at the emission sources should be taken to reduce the CVD mortality risk of PM 2.5 ., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Mining activities of antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) typically result in severe environmental contamination. These contaminants accumulate in rice and thus threaten the health of local residents, who consume Sb- and As-enriched rice grains. Microorganisms play a critical role in the transformation and transportation of Sb and As in paddy soil. Thus, an understanding of the microbiology of contaminated sites would promote the production of safe agricultural products. In this study, six Sb- and As-contaminated rice fields near an active Sb-mining area were investigated. The Sb and As concentrations of all samples were elevated compared to the background level in China. Nitrate, total As, total Sb, and Fe(III) were the major determinants of the microbial community structure. Seven bacterial taxa (i.e. Bradyrhizobium, Bryobacter, Candidatus Solibacter, Geobacter, Gemmatimonas, Halingium, and Sphingomonas) were identified as the core microbiome. These taxa were strongly correlated with the As and Sb contaminant fractions and likely to metabolize As and Sb.
