The presence of antibiotics in wastewater has been widely confirmed. Membrane bioreactor (MBR), as an efficient wastewater treatment technology, has attracted increasing interest in its ability to remove antibiotics in recent years. However, its long-term operation stability and the underlying mechanisms for antibiotics removal are still poorly understood. In this study, a hollow fiber MBR was used to treat low concentration sulfamethazine (SMZ) contained wastewater. The long-term effects of various SMZ concentrations on nutrients removal, SMZ degradation, and sludge characteristics were investigated. During the 244 days operation, the overall SMZ removal efficiency could reach 95.4 ± 4.5% under various SMZ concentrations and hydraulic retention times. The reactor exhibited high chemical oxygen demand and NH 4 + -N removal efficiencies, which reached 93.0% and 96.2%, respectively. A sludge concentration of 4.1 ± 0.3 g/L was maintained in the system without excess sludge discharge. The dosage of SMZ had obvious effect on sludge characteristics. The contents of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in MBR decreased after a long-term operation of the reactor under SMZ pressure. The low sludge concentration and the reduced EPS content were also beneficial for mitigating membrane fouling. Mechanical harvest of massive harmful algal blooms is an effective measure for bloom mitigation. Yet subsequent processing of the resulting water from algae water separation after the harvesting becomes a new problem since individual algal cells or small algal aggregates are still present in the water. Here, we proposed a novel approach for effectively flocculating the cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa with a removal efficiency of 97% in 6 h using hydrolyzed urine. Nitrogen and phosphorus were simultaneously reclaimed through struvite formation. The addition of Mg 2+ promoted the flocculation efficiency and nutrient removal as well as the yield of struvite. Ca 2+ could enhance the flocculation efficiency by forming calcium phosphate. During the flocculation process, no significant damage in algal cells was observed. This study provides a novel and sustainable potential for subsequent processing of the resulting water after algae water separation with simultaneous nutrient precipitation and reducing nutrient loads to wastewater treatment plants., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Chitin is one of the most abundant biopolymers in nature and the main composition of shrimp and crab shells (usually as food wastes). Thus it is essential to investigate the potential of degrading chitin for energy recovery. This study investigated the anaerobic degradation of chitin by Aeromonas hydrophila, a chitinolytic and popular electroactive bacterium, in both fermentation and microbial fuel cell (MFC) systems. The primary chitin metabolites produced in MFC were succinate, lactate, acetate, formate, and ethanol. The total metabolite concentration from chitin degradation increased seven-fold in MFC compared to the fermentation system, as well as additional electricity generation. Moreover, A. hydrophila degraded GlcNAc (the intermediate of chitin hydrolysis) significantly faster (0.97 and 0.94 mM C/d/mM-GlcNAc) than chitin (0.13 and 0.03 mM C/d/mM-GlcNAc) in MFC and fermentation systems, indicating that extracellular hydrolysis of chitin was the rate-limiting step and this step could be accelerated in MFC. Furthermore, more chemicals produced by the addition of exogenous mediators in MFC. This study proves that the chitin could be degraded effectively by an electroactive bacterium in MFC, and our results suggest that this bioelectrochemical system might be useful for the degradation of recalcitrant biomass to recover energy., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. A novel energy-saving anaerobic hybrid membrane bioreactor (AnHMBR) with mesh filter, which takes advantage of anaerobic membrane bioreactor and fixed-bed biofilm reactor, is developed for low-strength 2-chlorophenol (2-CP)-contained wastewater treatment. In this system, the anaerobic membrane bioreactor is stuffed with granular activated carbon to construct an anaerobic hybrid fixed-bed biofilm membrane bioreactor. The effluent turbidity from the AnHMBR system was low during most of the operation period, and the chemical oxygen demand and 2-CP removal efficiencies averaged 82.3% and 92.6%, respectively. Furthermore, a low membrane fouling rate was achieved during the operation. During the AnHMBR operation, the only energy consumption was for feed pump. And a low energy demand of 0.0045-0.0063kWhm(-3) was estimated under the current operation conditions. The interactions between metals (Ca(2+) and Hg(2+)) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) extracted from the aerobic and anaerobic sludge in wastewater treatment reactors were investigated using a combination of zeta potential measurement and 3-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy with parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis. Results show that Ca(2+) had no substantial effects on the EEM fluorescence spectra of the EPS, but their zeta potentials increased with the increasing Ca(2+) dosage. However, Hg(2+) had a significant effect on the EEM fluorescence spectra of the EPS, while their zeta potentials seemed not to be affected by the dose of Hg(2+). The interactions between Hg(2+) and EPS were elucidated using the fluorescence quenching with PARAFAC analysis, while the interactions between Ca(2+) and EPS were evaluated by the zeta potential technique. The binding constants for Hg(2+) and EPS were two orders of magnitude higher than those for Ca(2+) and EPS, suggesting that the binding mechanisms between Ca(2+) and EPS were different from those between Hg(2+) and EPS. The results might be useful for understanding the roles of EPS in bacterial self-protection against heavy metals and the aggregate formation mechanisms through ionic bridging interactions., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The reductive degradation of nitrobenzene (NB) by zero-valent iron was investigated. Experimental results showed that the degradation of NB was influenced by pH and NB concentration. The optimum pH value was found to be 3.0 for the reductive degradation of NB in the tested pH ranges of 3.0-12.0. The formation rate of aniline, a major reductive product of NB, followed zero-order kinetics at various pH levels. Furthermore, GC/MS analysis showed that aniline, azobenzene and azoxybenzene were the reductive products of NB by zero-valent iron. With the analysis of the products with GC/MS and FTIR, possible reductive pathways of NB by zero-valent iron were suggested.
