The utilization of groundwaters containing high levels of arsenic (As) for drinking water purposes presents major health and economic challenges for water utilities. One low-cost approach is to mix arsenic-rich groundwater (GW) with arsenic-free surface waters (SW) to achieve acceptable As levels. In this study we investigated the effect of different mixing ratios on water quality in an eastern Croatian water distribution system (WDS). To investigate the effects of mixing on drinking water quality, we measured the organic matter (OM) composition, disinfection byproduct (DBP) and metal concentrations in differently mixed ratios of GW and SW within the WDS. Fluorescence analysis revealed that the GW and SW had similar OM composition, with an almost equal ratio of humic- and protein-like OM throughout the WDS despite fluorescence indices revealing slightly different OM sources between the two water types. The tyrosine-like OM component was more variable, increasing during warmer months and towards the end of the WDS, most likely due to enhanced biofilm formation. Arsenic concentrations decreased to below 10 μg/L in the second half of the sampling campaign. Acceptable water quality was achieved after a period of destabilization and solubilization of loose deposits within the WDS resulting in their mobilization caused by water quality changes. Principal component and classification analysis, regression models and Spearman correlation coefficients revealed an association between As, OM and DBP concentrations with these correlations suggestive of their role in As mobilization in the WDS. This study was conducted in order to obtain a better understanding of the combined fouling by biopolymers coexisting with inorganic particles from the aspects of fouling index, fouling layer structure and biopolymer-particle interactions. Calcium alginate was used as the model biopolymer and Fe 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 , kaolin, and SiO 2 were used as model inorganic particles. Results showed that the combined fouling differed greatly among the four types of inorganic particles. The differences were attributed particularly to the different adsorption capacities for calcium alginate by the particles with this capacity decreasing in the order of Fe 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 , kaolin and SiO 2 . Particle size measurement and electron microscopic observation indicated the formation of agglomerates between calcium alginate and those inorganic particles exhibiting strong adsorption capacity. A structure was proposed for the combined fouling layer comprised of a backbone cake layer of alginate-inorganic particle agglomerates with the pores partially filled with discontinuous calcium alginate gels. The filterability of the fouling layer was primarily determined by the abundance of the gels. The strength of physical interaction between calcium alginate and each type of inorganic particle was calculated from the respective surface energies and zeta potentials. Calculation results showed that the extent of physical interaction increased in the order of Al 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 , kaolin and SiO 2 , with this order differing from that of adsorption capacity. Chemical interactions may also play an important role in the adsorption of alginate and the consequent combined fouling. Factors controlling the transport of geogenically-derived arsenic from a coastal acid sulfate soil into downstream sediments are identified in this study with both solid-phase associations and aqueous speciation clearly critical to the mobility and toxicity of arsenic. The data from both sequential extractions and X-ray adsorption spectroscopy indicate that arsenic in the unoxidised Holocene acid sulfate soils is essentially non-labile in the absence of prolonged oxidation, existing primarily as arsenopyrite or as an arsenopyrite-like species, likely arsenian pyrite. Anthropogenically-accelerated pedogenic processes, which have oxidised this material over time, have greatly enhanced the potential bioavailability of arsenic, with solid-phase arsenic almost solely present as As(V) associated with secondary Fe(III) minerals present. Analyses of downstream sediments reveal that a portion of the arsenic is retained as a mixed As(III)/As(V) solid-phase, though not at levels considered to be environmentally deleterious. Determination of arsenic speciation in pore waters using high performance liquid chromatography/Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry shows a dominance of As(III) in upstream pore waters whilst an unidentified As species reaches comparative levels within the downstream, estuarine locations. Pore water As(V) was detected at trace concentrations only. The oxidation of organic compounds in oxygen saturated aqueous suspensions of nanoparticulate zero valent iron (nZVI) is rapidly becoming an area of important consideration for environmental scientists and engineers. Through the production of reactive oxygen species, oxidative processes do occur but have been shown to be of limited efficiency. To increase efficiency for this process, the addition of electron shuttling molecules have been shown to enhance the oxidative capacity of nZVI. Laboratory experiments were conducted at pH 3.0 over a range of nZVI starting concentrations, and the reaction was monitored by following the oxidation of HCOOH and the production of H(2)O(2) with time. These studies confirm that the addition of the polyoxometallates (POM), sodium polyoxotungstate (Na(3)PW(12)O(40)), enhances the oxidative capacity of nZVI. Based on these results, the mechanism for the enhancement in oxidative capacity of nZVI is through two separate processes: (1) the POM out-competes H(2)O(2) for electrons from Fe(0) thereby increasing the H(2)O(2) concentration, and (2) the reduced form of the POM, PW(12)O(40)(-4), facilitates the cycling of Fe(III) to Fe(II) which enhances the homogeneous Fenton reaction., (Copyright (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Increasing attention is being placed on capping as a relatively new option in managing both contaminated sediments and dredged materials, due to its economic and environmental benefits. Capping denotes the placement of a cover onto potentially hazardous sediments or dredged material dumps to inhibit the transfer of contaminants into the water column. Retention of divalent iron and manganese cations using sandy capping layers containing natural zeolites as a reactive additive (active barrier systems, ABS) is evaluated in this study. Three different natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) rocks, two from deposits in Australia and one from a North-American deposit, were investigated and compared with respect to their mineralogical, physical and chemical properties. In particular, results from batch and column experiments show that ABS based on these materials can efficiently demobilise iron and manganese from percolating, anoxic pore water by cation exchange under favourable conditions. The retention, however, may be reduced strongly where competitive exchange with divalent cations such as calcium prevails or where mobile colloidal pore water constituents such as clay minerals or humic substances bind fractions of the dissolved iron or manganese. Therefore, the potential of ABS as a means for in situ remediation has to be evaluated diligently with particular regard to the pore water composition of the sediment to be capped.

A continuous photo-Fenton process has been used for the degradation of gaseous dichloromethane (DCM). By absorbing gaseous DCM into a reactive Fenton mixture, the scrubbing and degradation processes could be completed in the one reactor. Operating with a Dark Fenton solution did not result in removal of DCM any better than simply using MilliQ water. This was because the Fe(II) quickly converted to Fe(III) but was unable to regenerate. After a short time, the Fenton process was no longer operating and the DCM quickly accumulated in the reaction solution, preventing further accumulation due to a decreasing concentration gradient in the reactive solution. However, by using UV light and increasing the retention time from 20 to 50 s, there was sufficient time for the reactive solution to regenerate and continuous operation could achieve at least 65% removal of DCM from the gaseous phase at ambient temperature.
