The benzenes have attracted worldwide attention due to their high biological toxicity in the environment. In this study, using species sensitivity distribution method to derive the aquatic life criteria of 7 benzenes (carbazole, 1,3-Dichlorobenzene, 1,4-Dichlorobenzene, 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene, phenol, 2,4-Dichlorophenol and nitrobenzene), then risk quotient method (RQ), potentially affected fraction (PAF) method and joint probability curve (JPC) method were applied for multilevel ecological risk assessment for 7 benzenes in Tai Lake Basin. In addition, the human health ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) of 7 benzenes were derived according to USEPA guidelines, and the probability distributions of human health AWQC for 7 benzenes in China were simulated by Monte Carlo simulation combined with crystal ball software. Finally, the health risks of 7 benzenes in Tai Lake were assessed by RQ method assisted by Monte Carlo simulation. The results showed that nitrobenzene had the maximum aquatic life criteria value, followed by phenol, chlorobenzenes, 2,4-Dichlorophenol and carbazole. All recommended human health AWQC values of 7 benzenes were found at a position of 27th-55th percentiles in the output criteria distributions, indicating that recommended national human health AWQC values could provide effective protection for most of the population in China. Furthermore, the consumption of aquatic products was found to be the most influential parameter of human health AWQC for benzenes with higher Kow values. The risk assessments showed that noncarcinogenic 2,4-Dichlorophenol had potential ecological risk, carcinogenic carbazole and 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene had significant human health risk in Tai Lake.

The binding interactions between Hg and dissolved organic matter (DOM) affect the fate and transport of Hg in the aquatic environment. Here, we investigate the effects of photo-irradiation on the binding characteristics of dissolved organic matter with Hg(II) using FT-IR and synchronous fluorescence two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS). Results showed that the binding of Hg(II) onto humic acid (HA) followed the order of humic-like fraction > fulvic-like fraction > protein-like fraction and photo-irradiation did not affect this order. The binding affinity of each site within the fluorescent fraction was affected by the photoreaction patterns. Pre-irradiation of HA before Hg(II) binding changed its structures and binding ability. UV irradiation showed a more obvious effect on Hg(II)-HA complexes than solar irradiation, and UV irradiation enhanced the reactivity of aromatic groups of HA. The amine or amide N–H of HA played a leading role in binding with Hg(II) in the dark, whereas the aromatic amine C–N became dominant after UV irradiation. In fulvic acid (FA), the aromatic hydrogen C–H played a leading role in Hg(II) binding in the dark, but solar irradiation promoted the binding ability of polysaccharide C–O and the carboxyl C O became dominant after UV irradiation. The response sensitivity of the fulvic-like fraction to Hg(II) was higher than that of the protein-like fraction in FA. Multiple types of sites binding to Hg(II) were verified in the fulvic-like fraction and protein-like fraction of FA. These findings provide new insight into photo-induced structural changes of DOM upon Hg binding.

Fish play an important role as a primary eco-toxicity test organism in environmental hazard assessment. Toxicity data of native species are often sought for use in the derivation of water quality criteria (WQC). The Chinese medaka, Oryzias sinensis, is an endemic species of China. The acute toxicity of 6 chemicals on O. sinensis was tested in this work, and toxicity effect of 10 chemicals to O. sinensis was compared with 4 commonly used species globally. A total of 9 robust interspecies correlation estimation (ICE) models using O. sinensis as the surrogate species were constructed and used to derive predicted no effect concentration and hazardous concentrations of 5% species (HC5) values based on species sensitivity distribution. Results showed that the 96 h median lethal concentration of Hg2+, Cr6+, linear alkylbenzene sulfonates, triclosan, 3,4-dchloroaniline, sodium chloride to O. sinensis were 0.29, 50, 6.0, 0.63, 9.2 and 14,400 mg/L, respectively. The sensitivity of O. sinensis and other 4 testing organisms were statistically indistinguishable (P > 0.05). No significant difference among HC5-ICE, HC5-measured and HC5 from published literatures was identified. All results indicated the O. sinensis is a potential model organism in the application of eco-toxicity and WQC in China and other Asian countries.

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are a class of endocrine disruptors that are produced and used extensively in China. Given its presence in various products, a great quantity of PAEs flows into different aquatic systems each year. Hence, it is important to study the pollution levels and ecological risk of PAEs. This study investigated the distribution and seasonal variation of six priority PAEs in the surface water of Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China. In the wet season, the mean concentration of the total PAEs was 0.544 ± 0.173 μg/L, while the dry season concentration (1.003 ± 0.451 μg/L) nearly doubled. The most abundant PAE congeners were di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), followed by bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). To evaluate the ecological risks in Poyang Lake, the predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) of four PAEs based on non-lethal effects were derived. For diethyl phthalate (DEP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), DBP, and DEHP, the PNECs were 31.6, 3.30, 2.31, and 0.0210 μg/L, respectively. The tiered ecological risk assessment showed that DEP and BBP posed no risk in Poyang Lake. Meanwhile, DBP posed a potential risk in Poyang Lake, but the risk of DEHP was unacceptable and requires more actions. Specifically, the probabilities of exceeding the threshold for the protection of 95% of the aquatic organisms (HC5) were 3.30% and 4.43% for DEHP in the wet and dry season, respectively. This study provides an appropriate reference for the surface water management of PAE pollution in China.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely distributed in various environmental media and have thus attracted extensive attention worldwide. To prevent and control PAH pollution in China, the study of ambient water quality criteria (AWQC), human health risks, and aquatic ecological risk is critical. There are no reports to date on the human health AWQC of PAHs in China. Therefore, this study first derived the human health AWQC values of 12 PAHs based on exposure data and bioaccumulation factor in China. We found that local exposure parameters and other relevant factors were key during the development of AWQC in different countries and regions, which led to differences with the reference value recommended by USEPA. Based on the incremental life time cancer risk (ILCR), hazard quotients (HQ) and potentially affected fraction (PAF) methods, the health and ecological risks of 16 PAHs were assessed subsequently. And the results are as follows: the non-carcinogenic PAHs’ health risks ranged from 1.01 × 10−10 to 1.60 × 10−9, and carcinogenic PAH health risks ranged from 5.03 × 10−7 to 4.74 × 10−5. The toxic effects of 8 PAHs on aquatic organisms exhibited the following order: benzo (a) pyrene (BaP) > anthracene (Ant) > pyrene (Pye) > phenanthrene (Phe) > fluoranthene (Flua) > acenaphthene (Ace) > fluorene (Flu) > naphthalene (Nap). Among these, the ecological risks posed by Ant and BaP were the highest, according to the HQ and PAF methods.

Ammonia has drawn great concern worldwide due to its ubiquity in surface water and high toxic effect. In China, ammonia pollution issues in the Liao River were highlighted from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment annual report. In this study, water quality criteria (WQC) for two types of ammonia (total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and un-ionized ammonia (NH3–N)) and related temporal concentration distributions and ecological risks in the Liao River were investigated. For sampling sites (2014) and national monitoring sites (2008, 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2018) of the Liao River, there were seasonal variations identified for TAN and NH3–N. More specifically, high concentrations of TAN and NH3–N occurred separately in winter and summer, and there were increasing trends for TAN and NH3–N from 2013 to 2018. The acute and chronic WQC values for TAN based on the toxicity values of the Liao River species were 16.86 and 4.39 mg/L (pH of 7.0 and temperature of 20 °C), and the acute and chronic WQC values for NH3–N were 0.067 and 0.017 mg/L. The exceedance probabilities of 5% species affected for long-term exposure of TAN and NH3–N were ≥30% in 2014. In addition, the increasing trend of concentrations and ecological risks posed by NH3–N from 2013 should be paying more attention. This study could provide useful information for ammonia environmental risk management in China and ecological risk assessment procedure for NH3–N and TAN exposure in similar surface waters worldwide.

Establishment of numerical water quality criteria (WQC) has brought increasing interest in China. However, toxicity data to develop robust WQC values (number of toxicity data ≥8) of contaminants based solely on endemic and indigenous species are insufficient. In this study, interspecies correlation estimation (ICE) models were developed using a combination of North American ICE models supplemented with China-specific species to resolve this problem. A total of 207 significant surrogate-predicted models (p 0.05, F-test) were derived: 119, 66 and 22 models for vertebrates, invertebrates and plant surrogate species, respectively.
