Chlorinated organic compounds are widely used as solvents, but they are pollutants that can have adverse effects on the environment and human health. Dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) such as Shewanella and Geobacter have been applied to treat a wide range of halogenated organic compounds due to their specific biological properties. Until now, there has been no systematic review on the mechanisms of direct or indirect degradation of halogenated organic compounds by DIRB. This work summarizes the discussion of DIRB's ability to enhance the dechlorination of reaction systems through different pathways, both biological and biochemical. For biological dechlorination, some DIRB have self-dechlorination capabilities that directly dechlorinate by hydrolysis. Adjustment of dechlorination genes through genetic engineering can improve the dechlorination capabilities of DIRB. DIRB can also adjust the capacity for the microbial community to dechlorinate and provide nutrients to enhance the expression of dechlorination genes in other bacteria. In biochemical dechlorination, DIRB bioconverts Fe(III) to Fe(II), which is capable of dichlorination. On this basis, the DIRB-driven Fenton reaction can efficiently degrade chlorinated organics by continuously maintaining anoxic conditions to generate Fe(II) and oxic conditions to generate H 2 O 2. DIRB can drive microbial fuel cells due to their electroactivity and have a good dechlorination capacity at low levels of energy consumption. The contribution of DIRB to the removal of pesticides, antibiotics and POPs is summarized. Then the DIRB electron transfer mechanism is discussed, which is core to their ability to dechlorinate. Finally, the prospect of future work on the removal of chlorine-containing organic pollutants by DIRB is presented, and the main challenges and further research directions are suggested. Ionic liquids (ILs) are gradually concerned due to their potential environmental and health risks. In this work, the chronic effects of imidazolium-based ILs, using [C 14 mim]Br as a representative, were evaluated using model animal Caenorhabditis elegans . Our results show that prolonged exposure (72 h) of ILs to the nematodes at concentrations of 5 and 10 mg/L induced adverse effects on the growth, locomotive behaviors and development. To explore the toxicity mechanism, lipofuscin content, ROS level and the expressions of five superoxide dismutase (SOD) genes were determined after the prolonged exposure. The lipofuscin content, ROS level and expressions of SOD genes did not show significant changes except that the expression of sod-5 was reduced by 2.7-fold following the treatment of 10 mg/L of [C 14 mim]Br. These results suggest that oxidative stress may not be responsible for the adverse physiological effects induced by relatively low concentrations of imidazolium-based ILs. We further determined the gene expressions of phase I detoxification enzyme cytochrome P450 (CYP), phase II detoxification enzyme UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter P-glycoprotein (PGP). The results demonstrate that CYP, UGT and PGP may be involved in the detoxification of ILs. Mechanical harvest of massive harmful algal blooms is an effective measure for bloom mitigation. Yet subsequent processing of the resulting water from algae water separation after the harvesting becomes a new problem since individual algal cells or small algal aggregates are still present in the water. Here, we proposed a novel approach for effectively flocculating the cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa with a removal efficiency of 97% in 6 h using hydrolyzed urine. Nitrogen and phosphorus were simultaneously reclaimed through struvite formation. The addition of Mg 2+ promoted the flocculation efficiency and nutrient removal as well as the yield of struvite. Ca 2+ could enhance the flocculation efficiency by forming calcium phosphate. During the flocculation process, no significant damage in algal cells was observed. This study provides a novel and sustainable potential for subsequent processing of the resulting water after algae water separation with simultaneous nutrient precipitation and reducing nutrient loads to wastewater treatment plants. Abstract: The contamination of marine ecosystems by endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) is of great concern. Protein expression profile maybe a good method to help us understand the molecular mechanisms of EDCs-toxicity to aquatic organisms. In this study, the abalone (Haliotis diversicolor supertexta), was selected as the target organism. Toxicological effects of two reference endocrine disruptors: diallyl phthalate (DAP, 50μgL−1) and bisphenol-A (BPA, 100μgL−1) were investigated after a three months static-renewal exposure on abalones using proteomics to analyze their hepatopancreas tissues. Some enzyme activity parameters of hepatopancreas extracts were also performed, including Na+–K+-ATPase, Ca2+–Mg2+-ATPase, peroxidase (POD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) production. After analyzing the proteomics profile of hepatopancreas by 2D gel electrophoresis, we found that 24 spots significantly increased or decreased at protein expression level (⩾2-fold difference) in the 2D-maps from the treatment groups. Eighteen out of 24 protein spots were successfully identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI–TOF-MS). These proteins can be roughly categorized into diverse functional classes such as detoxification, oxidative stress, hormone regulating, cellular metabolism and innate immunity. In addition, the enzymatic results indicated that DAP/BPA exposure affected the oxidative stress status and the cellular homeostasis, which partly corroborated the proteomics’ results. Taken together, these data demonstrate that proteomics is a powerful tool to provide valuable insights into possible mechanisms of toxicity of EDCs contaminants in aquatic species. In the present study, we used Caenorhabditis elegans assay system to investigate in hormetic effects of imidazolium-based bromide Ionic Liquids (ILs) and explored the possible underlying mechanism. Firstly, C. elegans was treated with ILs with different alkyl chain lengths at different concentrations. We found that exposure to ILs at 0.01 mg/L extended the mean lifespan of C. elegans and the ILs with longer alkyl chain showed more obvious effects. To investigate the possible mechanism, the nematodes were exposed to the three ILs at 0.01 mg/L for 2, 5, 7, 9 and 11 days. The levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in C. elegans increased significantly when treated for 2 days and then declined gradually compared to those of respective controls as time went on. After exposure for 11 days, the ROS levels and liposuscin accumulation were significantly lower in the treated groups than those of control group. Meanwhile, the expression of aging-related genes sod-5 and daf-16 were both massively up-regulated for the three ILs examined. Our results show that low concentration of ILs exert hormetic effect on C. elegans . In this study, the magnesium oxide (MgO)-based adsorbents [granulated MgO aggregates (GA-MgO) and surface-modified MgO powder (SM-MgO)] were developed to remediate a fluoride-contaminated groundwater site. Both GA-MgO and SM-MgO had porous, spherical, and crystalline structures. Diameters for GA-MgO and SM-MgO were 1–1.7 mm and 1–10 μm, respectively. The pseudo second-order dynamic adsorption and the Freundlich isotherm could be applied to express the chemical adsorption phenomena. The monolayer adsorption was the dominant mechanism at the initial adsorption period. During the latter part of fluoride adsorption, the multilayer adsorption became the dominant mechanism for fluoride removal from the water phase, which also resulted in the increased adsorption capacity. Higher hydroxide, phosphate, and carbonate concentrations caused a decreased fluoride removal efficiency due to the competition of sorption sites between fluoride and other anions with similar electronic properties. Fluoride removal mechanism using GA-MgO and SM-MgO as the adsorbents was mainly carried out by the chemical adsorption. Reaction paths contained two main processes: (1) formation of magnesium hydroxide after the reaction of MgO with water, and (2) the hydroxyl group of the magnesium hydroxide was replaced by fluoride ions to form magnesium fluoride precipitation. Results from column tests show that up to 61 and 73% of fluoride removal (initial fluoride concentration = 9.3 mg/L) could be obtained after 50 pore volumes of groundwater pumping with GA-MgO and SM-MgO injection, respectively. The GA-MgO system could be applied to contain and remediate fluoride-contaminated groundwater, and SM-MgO could be applied as an immediate fluoride removal alternative to achieve a rapid pollutant removal for emergency responses. Up to 71% of fluoride removal (fluoride concentration = 10.8 mg/L) could be obtained with GA-MgO injection after 30 days of operation. Abstract: The effects of bisphenol A (BPA) on abalone (Haliotis diversicolor supertexta) embryonic development were investigated by exposing the fertilized eggs to four different concentrations of BPA (0.05, 0.2, 2 and 10μgmL−1). Toxicity endpoints including the embryo development parameters, the physiological features and the expression profile of several reference genes (prohormone convertase 1, PC1; cyclin B, CB; and cyclin-dependent kinase 1, CDK1) were assessed. The results showed that BPA could markedly reduce embryo hatchability, increase developmental malformation, and suppress the metamorphosis behavior of larvae. The possible toxicological mechanisms hidden behind of these effects (i.e. disturbing the embryogenesis) might result from three aspects: (1) BPA disturbance the cellular ionic homeostasis and osmoregulation of abalone embryos by changing the Na+–K+-ATPase and Ca2+–Mg2+-ATPase levels; (2) BPA induced oxidative damage of embryos by significantly alterating the peroxidase (POD) activities and the malondialdehyde (MDA) production; and (3) the RT-PCR analysis further demonstrated that BPA perturbed the cellular endocrine regulation and cell cycle progression by down-regulating the PC1 gene, as well as over-expressing the CB and CDK1 genes. This is the first comprehensive study on the developmental toxicity of BPA to the marine abalone at morphological, physiological and molecular levels. Adsorption behavior of five kinds of water-soluble dyes onto functionalized resin NKY has been dynamically and thermodynamically investigated. The results showed that the adsorption rates of dye K-GN, K-2BP, KN-R, AAB and 2G are all controlled by liquid film diffusion and particle diffusion. Equilibrium adsorption data can be well described by three-parameter equation. The first layer adsorption is the physical enhanced by chemical effect but multilayer adsorption is typically physical adsorption. Standard free energy change ΔG0 and standard entropy change ΔS0 indicate the adsorption of the dyes onto NKY can occur spontaneously. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The interfacial tracer test (ITT) conducted via aqueous miscible-displacement column experiments is one of a few methods available to measure air-water interfacial areas for porous media. The primary objective of this study was to examine the robustness of air-water interfacial area measurements obtained with interfacial tracer tests, and to examine the overall validity of the method. The potential occurrence and impact of surfactant-induced flow was investigated, as was measurement replication. The column and the effluent samples were weighed during the tests to monitor for potential changes in water saturation and flux. Minimal changes in water saturation and flux were observed for experiments wherein steady flow conditions were maintained using a vacuum-chamber system. The air-water interfacial areas measured with the miscible-displacement method completely matched interfacial areas measured with methods that are not influenced by surfactant-induced flow. This successful benchmarking was observed for all three media tested, and over a range of saturations. A mathematical model explicitly accounting for nonlinear and rate-limited adsorption of surfactant at the solid-water and air-water interfaces as well as the influence of changes in surface tension on matric potentials and flow was used to simulate the tracer tests. The independently-predicted simulations provided excellent matches to the measured data, and revealed that the use of the vacuum system minimized the occurrence of surfactant-induced flow and its associated effects. These results in total unequivocally demonstrate that the miscible-displacement ITT method produced accurate and robust measurements of air-water interfacial area under the extant conditions. • The interfacial tracer test is used to measure air-water interfacial area for three media. • The measurements made with the standard method are consistent with other measurements. • Mathematical modeling results support the observed efficacy of the method. Abstract Effects of rhamnolipids on the removal of 2,4,2,4-tetrabrominated biphenyl ether (BDE-47) by Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P. chrysosporium) had been investigated, as well as the influence of carbon source (i.e. glucose). The results showed that the removal efficiency was over 90% in all treatments in 7 d. Rhamnolipids at low concentrations (0.05 and 0.1 CMC (critical micelle concentration)) could promote the removal of BDE-47, however, the inhibition effects occurred at high concentrations (0.5 and 1.0 CMC). The further study indicated that rhamnolipids at low concentrations not only promote the growth of mycelium, but also had obvious promotion on ligninolytic enzymes activity (i.e. manganese peroxidase (MnP), lignin peroxidase (LiP) and laccase (Lac)), especially for MnP and Lac. However, the opposite effect was generated at high rhamnolipids concentrations. Meanwhile, glucose played an active role for BDE-47 removal. For better understanding the degradation mechanism, the degradation product analysis and molecular docking had been introduced to this study. The degradation product analysis indicated that OH-PBDEs were the major degradation products and hydroxylation should be the important degradation pathway. The docking results showed that the ideal binding conformation occurred between ligninolytic enzymes and BDE-47, and hydrophobic interactions were the main interaction. Moreover, hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions both existed in ligninolytic enzymes and rhamnolipids interaction. That might be the reason that rhamnolipids affected enzymes activity. These results indicated that P. chrysosporium might be a type of ideal microorganisms in the removal of BDE-47 pollution, and rhamnolipids could be a type of additives for better removal efficiency. The molecular docking has been employed successfully to study the mechanism of biodegradation in the environmental remediation in the past few years, although medical science and biology are the main application areas for it. Molecular docking is a very convenient and low cost method to understand the reaction mechanism of proteins or enzymes with ligands with a high accuracy. This paper mainly provides a review for the application of molecular docking between organic pollutants and enzymes. It summarizes the fundamental knowledge of molecular docking, such as its theory, available softwares and main databases. Moreover, five types of pollutants, including phenols, BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes), nitrile, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and high polymer (e.g., lignin and cellulose), are discussed from molecular level. Different removal mechanisms are also explained in detail via docking technology. Agricultural plastic films and triazole fungicides are widely used in agricultural production process. Exposure to natural environment, agricultural plastic films will degrade into micron plastic particles, which will adsorb pesticide molecules and may affect their toxicity, biological activity and persistence. The long-term coexistence of microplastics (MPs) and triazole fungicides will bring potential harms to the agricultural ecological environment. Therefore, two kinds of triazole fungicides flusilazole (FLU) and epoxiconazole (EPO) were selected as cases and the adsorption behaviors of them on polystyrene and polyethylene were investigated. A series of factors which could affect the adsorption behavior were evaluated. Specifically, the particle size of MPs could affect its adsorption capacity, and the smaller the particle size, the stronger the adsorption capacity. Moreover, with the increase of pH value from 6.0 to 9.0, the adsorption capacity of MPs to target compounds gradually increased. The effect of ionic strength was evaluated by NaCl, and 0.05% of NaCl was beneficial to the adsorption process, while the continuous increase of NaCl concentration inhibited the adsorption. Oxalic acid and humic acid decreased the adsorption capacity of flusilazole on PE by 15.99–32.00% and PS by 35.02–48.67%, respectively. In addition, compared with the single pesticide system, the adsorption capacity of MPs for flusilazole and epoxiconazole in the binary pesticides system decreased by 36.13–37.93% and 44.36–51.35%, respectively, indicating that competitive adsorption occurred between the two pesticides. Meanwhile, the adsorption process was evaluated by adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms and were consistent with pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model, respectively. Finally, several characterization analyses were conducted to investigated the adsorption mechanism, and hydrogen, halogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction proved to play an important role. Degradation experiments are conducted to specifically compare the degradation of 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) by aerobic and anaerobic strains isolated from real e-waste sites contaminated by BDE-47. The effect of carbon sources, inducers and surfactants on the degradation was examined to strengthen such a comparison. An aerobic strain, B. cereus S1, and an anaerobic strain, A. faecalis S4, were obtained. The results indicated that BDE-47 could be used as the sole carbon source by B. cereus S1 and A. faecalis S4 under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. The degradation of BDE-47 by B. cereus S1 and A. faecalis S4 was illustrated a first-order kinetics process obtaining a removal efficiency of 61.6% and 51.6% with a first-order rate constant of 0.0728 d−1 and 0.0514 d−1, and corresponding half-life of 8.7 d and 13.5 d, respectively. The addition of carbon sources (yeast extract, glucose, acetic acid and ethanol) and inducers (2,4-dichlorophenol, bisphenol A and toluene) promoted BDE-47 degradation by both B. cereus S1 and A. faecalis S4 under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, while hydroquinone as the inducer inhibited the degradation. All of the surfactants tested (CTAB, Tween 80, Triton X-100, rhamnolipid and SDS) showed inhibitory effect. BDE-47 degradation by B. cereus S1 under aerobic condition was more efficient than A. faecalis S4 under anaerobic condition whether with or without the additives. The results of the study indicated that in the field sites contaminated by BDE-47, the aerobic condition can be more favorable for BDE-47 removal and the degradation can be further enhanced by applying suitable carbon sources and inducers. Interfacial partitioning tracer tests (IPTT) are used to measure air–water interfacial area for unsaturated porous media. The standard IPTT method involves conducting tests wherein an aqueous surfactant solution is introduced into a packed column under unsaturated flow conditions. Surfactant-induced drainage has been observed to occur for this method in some cases, which can complicate data analysis and impart uncertainty to the measured values. Two novel alternative approaches for conducting IPTTs are presented herein that are designed in part to prevent surfactant-induced drainage. The two methods are termed the dual-surfactant IPTT (IPTT-DS) and the residual-air IPTT (IPTT-RA). The two methods were used to measure air–water interfacial areas for two natural porous media. System monitoring during the tests revealed no measurable surfactant-induced drainage. Neonicotinoid insecticides are neurotoxicants that cause serious environmental pollution and ecosystem risks. In the present study, a nitenpyram-degrading bacterium, Rhodococcus ruber CGMCC 17550, was isolated from a nitenpyram production sewage treatment tank. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed R. ruber degraded nitenpyram via a novel hydroxylation pathway to form three different metabolites, one of which was confirmed to hydroxylate nitenpyram at the C3 site of the 6-chlorpyridine cycle by nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. The nitenpyram degradation rate increased as the biomass of resting R. ruber CGMCC 17550 cells increased, reaching 98.37% at an OD 600 of 9 in transformation broth containing 100 mg L−1 nitenpyram after 72 h of incubation. Nitenpyram degradation by R. ruber CGMCC 17550 was insensitive to dissolved oxygen levels. Use of glucose, fructose and pyruvate as co-substrates slightly increased nitenpyram degradation. The cytochrome P450 inhibitor 1-aminobenzotriazole strongly inhibited nitenpyram degradation, indicating that P450 enzymes may mediate nitenpyram hydroxylation. Inoculation of R. ruber CGMCC 17550 enhanced nitenpyram degradation in surface water. Additionally, R. ruber cells immobilized by calcium-alginate remediated 87.11% of 100 mg L−1 NIT in 8 d. Genome sequencing analysis confirmed that R. ruber CGMCC 17550 has metabolic diversity and abundant KEGG genes involved in xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism. In recent years, surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR) has attracted increasing interest duo to the high efficiency of removing non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) from aquifer. A thorough understanding of SEAR is necessary for its successful implementation in field remediation. This paper reviewed the SEAR technology in a comprehensive way based on the recent research advances. Firstly, an overview of the basic processes and mechanisms underlying the technology was presented. Secondly, applications of SEAR and the factors that influence the performance were summarized. Thirdly, the key limitations of SEAR, which are downward migration of dense-NAPLs, secondary pollution of surfactants, adsorptive, precipitative and partitioning loss of surfactants, and heterogeneity of the aquifer, were reviewed. Finally, the recent advances in modifying SEAR to overcome the limitations were discussed in detail. The review will promote our understanding of SEAR technology and provide some useful information to improve the performance of SEAR in applications. The treatment of wastewater containing hydrophobic organic pollutants solubilized by surfactants is of great environmental importance. In this work, the removal of rhamnolipid-solubilized hexadecane via a salicylic acid-methanol-acetone modified steel converter slag (SMA-SCS) catalyzed Fenton-like process was studied. First, we investigated the adsorption of rhamnolipid and hexadecane onto SCS and SMA-modified SCS. Compared to that of SCS, SMA-SCS exhibited better adsorption performance with maximum adsorption capacities of 0.23 and 0.28 mg/g for hexadecane and rhamnolipid, respectively. Degradation experiments showed that hexadecane was more readily degraded by the Fenton-like process than rhamnolipid. Up to 81.1% of hexadecane removal was achieved over 20 g/L of SMA-SCS within 24 h, whereas only 36% of rhamnolipid was degraded. On the other hand, the results indicated that increased rhamnolipid concentration had a negative effect on the degradation of hexadecane. During the oxidation reaction, the pH value of solution remained between 6.0 and 6.72. All these results demonstrated that the SMA-SCS/H 2 O 2 Fenton-like process could be a cost-effective and promising approach for the treatment of surfactant-solubilized hydrophobic organic compounds.
