The development of multifunctional catalysts is a necessary step to effectively carry out one-pot cascade reactions, such as that from furfural to γ-valerolactone. This research effort faces the challenge posed by the intrinsic limit of how many kinds of catalytic sites a single material can bear. In this work, the application of Spray-Freeze Drying (SFD) as a synthetic technique for the preparation of a wide range of innovative composite multi-functional catalysts is reported. Herein we show that by the proper combination of Aquivion as a highly active Brønsted acid catalyst and metal oxides as both support materials and Lewis acids (LAS) enable to achieve highly unique efficient and effective dual acid composite catalysts that are able to carry out the cascade reaction from furfural to γ-valerolactone. The dual catalytic system comprised of Aq/ZrO 2 with 30 % polymer content prepared via spray-freeze drying exhibited GVL yields of 25 % after only 2 h at 180 °C and a remarkably high productivity of 4470 μmol GVL  g Cat -1  h -1 N MAS NMR and 15 N MAS NMR and 19 F MAS NMR indicate that activity arises from the proper tuning of BAS/LAS (Brønsted Acid Site/Lewis Acid Site) acidic properties., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Pt nanoparticles were prepared by a sol immobilization route, deposited on supports with different acid/base properties (MgO, activated carbon, TiO2 , Al2O3, H-Mordenite), and tested in the selective oxidation of sorbose to 2-keto-gulonic acid (2-KGUA), an important precursor for vitamin C. In general, as the basicity of the support increased, a higher catalytic activity occurred. However, in most cases, a strong deactivation was observed. The best selectivity to 2-KGUA was observed with acidic supports (TiO2 and H-Mordenite) that were able to minimize the formation of C1/C2 products. We also demonstrated that, by alloying Pt to Au, it is possible to enhance significantly the selectivity of Pt-based catalysts. Moreover, the AuPt catalyst, unlike monometallic Pt, showed good stability in recycling because of the prevention of metal leaching during the reaction., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The efficacy of using cerium oxide foams as a support for Au nanoparticles and subsequent use as oxidation catalysts have been investigated. These were synthesized using L-asparagine to produce a cerium coordination polymer foam, which was calcined to give the oxide foam. Au nanoparticles were supported on the CeO(2) foams using a sol-immobilization method. The activity of the Au/foamCeO(2) for solvent-free benzyl alcohol oxidation was superior to standard Au/CeO(2) catalysts, and the activity was found to be dependent on the crystallization time of the precursor foam. A crystallization time of 4 h was found to produce the most active catalyst, which retained activity and a high selectivity to benzaldehyde (ca. 96 %) when re-used and this is related to the structure of the material. Glycolic acid is an important chemical that has uses as a cleaning agent as well as a chemical intermediate. At present glycolic acid is manufactured from either chloroacetic acid or from formaldehyde hydrocyanation, both routes being nongreen and using nonsustainable resources. We investigate the possibility of producing glycolate from the oxidation of glycerol, a sustainable raw material. We show that by using 1 % wt Au/carbon catalysts prepared using a sol-immobilization method glycolate yields of ca. 60 % can be achieved, using hydrogen peroxide as oxidant in an autoclave reactor. We describe and discuss the reaction mechanism and consider the reaction conditions that maximize the formation of glycolate.
